Maitland Maternity #3

Married To The Boss

Rate this book
If he wanted a marriage of convenience, it would be at her convenience!

R.J. Maitland, President of Maitland Maternity, was forced to do some major damage control. The media circus surrounding allegations that he had fathered an abandoned child had left his reputation in tatters and the clinic in jeopardy.

Dana Dillinger had been R.J.'s right hand for years: loyal, dependable...and hopelessly, secretly in love with him. When he suggested that marriage was the best way to salvage the situation and prove he wasn't the playboy the press had labeled him, Dana accepted his "proposal." With one exception...

R.J. wanted a marriage in name only: no sex, just marriage. Dana wanted all the marital rights of a bride, including and especially sex, or the deal was off. Between a rock and a hard place, R.J. agreed, not knowing what he'd just gotten himself into!

I just couldn’t connect with the writing style and it was really hard to connect to a hero who absolutely refuses to compromise.
He doesn’t want kid. So if heroine wants kid she’ll have to leave.
And when he does an 180 no discussion necessary because he decided it.
He may have slept with the OW while he was lusting after heroine, I lost count after a while.

Setting – Maitland Maternity Clinic, mostly the administustrative offices and R.J.’s isolated, garden enriched home.

Theme – unrequited love and trust.

Characters-
R.J. Maitland – mother died, father walked out, Megan raised him and his siblings, with a great deal of love. He is head of the clinic, a great and wealthy businessman, highly controlled – of himself and of those around him. He doesn’t believe in love for himself, and is afraid he’d be like his father, so does not want a wife or children. Likes gardening, and has a beautiful personal garden.

Dana Dillinger – R.J.’s extremely competent secretary… she stands up to him, is unflappable when he’s in a temper, anticipates his needs (like handing him a cup of coffee when he walks in), and has been in love with him since day one. Her mother made her to feel unworthy and unattractive, and she drives professionally.

Tanya Lane and 50 other lying women – when reward from a news group is offered for the Maitland baby’s mother to come forth, Tanya and many others do. Tanya is the worst; she dated R.J. a year earlier, and claimed he was the father. This is causing bad publicity for the clinic, with some patients leaving.

‘Petey’ Connor O’Hara and Janelle – a sub plot – out to con the Maitlands.

Megan Maitland – the matriarch & CEO – She took in her sister’s children and loved and raised them as her own… she has not admitted to the rest of the family about Connor, and seems to be taking him at face value.

Plot -
Maitland Maternity Clinic – in first book an infant was left on their doorstep with a note that it was a Maitland baby … and Mom Maitland is fostering the infant. And Mom Maitland’s firstborn was taken from her from a manipulating father in law and adopted out – and she was told the infant died… and now an imposter has shown up claiming to be that son… her real son (Connor) just found out about her, and is indecisive about what to do… and a woman he turned to when in pain is gone (he thinks she up and left, but is dead – killed by imposter son &his girl friend– Petey/Connor & Janey)… I think, without knowing, that the infant was real son and woman’s child… and imposter son is out for money – not sure how he’s going to fully take advantage of it. This story line will continue in further books.

Traditional high power executive doesn’t see full beauty (inside and out) of highly competent secretary, and said secretary is in love with boss. Boss needs a wife (in this case to counter the bad publicity), asks secretary (the only woman he’d trust to marry) for a marriage of convenience – just as he is starting to notice her other charms.

Twists to tradition? – She says no to a marriage of convenience – she wants sex – and he reluctantly agrees.

On their wedding night, R.J. plans on making love to her, but staying in control, and after cuddling her to sleep, slipping into his own bed. He is overtaken by passion, and overwhelmed by her virginity, and unable to slow down for her pleasure, ‘spending’ himself in her… she jumps out of bed – not because of disgust, but because she’s overwhelmed by the intimacy and since she can’t tell him she loves him and because at some point the marriage will be over, and she’d like to stay his secretary… she decides no more sex –

And R.J. works hard to show her great sex – that he can do better – and along the way realizes he likes sharing his home and meals and time with her. He decides to fire her when he cannot concentrate at work… and she decides to have sex with him… and it’s great – and she works it into the workday too – and things are working out.

And at a family gathering, he realizes he loves her and that he’s a great uncle and could probably be a great father – just as she tells him she needs to break it off because she wants more, and the longer they wait the more it’ll hurt… but when he tells her he loves her and wants babies, she’d finally very happy… ahhh

Really loved it.
Boss-assistant story with good characters, a sizzling steam and a remarkable writing style.
The plot is quite simple: our H needs to wed in order to "rebuild" his reputation because of a false accusation of fathering/abandoning a baby child.
The best candidate bride is his assistant: reliable, clever and absolutely faithful to the company.
She accepts but with only one request: the marriage, as long as it lasts, will not be in name only....
Consequences can be easily guessed but the whole story is very well written and the ending is really emotional.
L. Foster seldom is a disappointment for me!

No what I didn't like about this story? You're pretty much forced to read the rest of the series. There are soooooo many unanswered questions and a fair bit of confusion. At least for me.

Other than that...great story, nice characters, and a strong matriarch. What's not to like?

Oh, and the steamy scenes are pretty good, too!

Ok, but not fantastic. It did make me curious as to the other books in the series, but they are not high on my "to read" list.

The story was really predictable, but a nice read.

This wasn’t the version I read, but an omnibus of two novels by Lori Foster with this being one of the stories that it contained.

4-4.5 stars

Another great read from the wonderful Lori Foster. I knew that I couldn’t go wrong with story with both Lori Foster and the premise. It was right up my alley, and I throughly enjoyed it. Once again Lori Foster did not disappoint, in fact this story reminded me a lot of older Diana Palmer books that I have read in the past and have absolutely loved and adored. It had those same elements that made me fall in love with Diana palmer books.

I loved the premise of this book, and I would of any romance that would contained these themes. It was an office romance where Dana had worked for years and years for the ruggedly handsome R.J., and she was his trusted PA. Of coarse she was madly in love with him and hid her feelings well for him believing that he would never feel the same way about her that she did. And to just add another layer to it R.J. Considered Dana a dear friend and vice versa. Needless to say there was a lot of angst going on as she battled hiding her love for him during a majority of book. I love those types of stories where they heroine had been in love with the hero but he was absolutely clueless about the fact and never knowing how much he was hurting her in the process. It just created really good tension and angst like I said and in the case of Dana and R.J was no exception. And it was so good, and I loved seeing that battle to keep her feelings a secret and not exposing them even though in the little ways it was very clear that Dana was in love with him even if it wasn’t for him. This type of story was in my wheelhouse and gave me lots of feels associated with it.

To complicate matters R.J was involved in a bit of a scandal and his reputation was in ruin. The only way to save it was to appear like a respectable and honorable one woman man, and knew that there was only woman he could trust. That’s right? Dana. He asked her to marry him to reform his image, and hence the fun really began. I think what was most humorous about it was the fact that she went for broke and basically asked him for a real marriage instead of fake on. She wanted to experience intimacy with him like she had been dreaming for years so she decided to go for it with her condition for marrying him. It was something I wasn’t expecting but made it all the more entertaining especially since his attraction was just making its presence known at the beginning of this book.

Their first time wasn’t the perfect moment that was expected, which was kind of refreshing because usually that’s how it’s usually portrayed in most romance, but that made the scene all the more real and endearing especially when he learned that he was her first. I think it was different but it just what made the story made it stand out for me. This was the turning point for them not only because they got closer but it kind of woke R.J up in how important she truly was to him, and what he wanted to give everything, and I don’t know if it would have happened if they had a “perfect” first time. And I really liked that.

While he tried to convince her to continue their intimate relationship, she was backing off from that relationship, realizing the true impact of what lovemaking was emotionally. She realized that she couldn’t remained detached like she thought she could do, but all her love went into that act and she couldn’t hide from him, which was what she feared the most. But he realized that was what he wanted with her. That closeness, and it was basically a back and forth between them as they tried to come to an agreement on their new relationship.

As he tried to seduce her and try to convince her that he truly want her, it was as entertaining as it was emotional because there was so much beneath this surface as deeper emotions were developing over the course of the book. And it was a journey, and it was a fun one. This was really where it reminded me of Diana Palmer with lots of sensual scenes thrown in there as their relationship deepened and deepened over the course of the book. And it was very sexy and really showed off their connection for one another and how much they did truly need each other. I loved those scenes because it brought them closer together.

As did their other love scenes when Dana finally decided to be with him again when she realized that R.J did want her after all. The scenes were very passionate and sensual and sexy all in the same token, and it was beautiful because it was clear that they belonged together in every way possible. Their love for each other was obvious after all this time not being explored, but finally the time was right to do so.

Overall this was a quick, yet sensual read that I really did enjoy. I adore Lori Foster so much, and this book was once again reminder why I enjoy her so much with her writing style being pretty flawless. Lori Foster knew how to create some great sensual love scenes between R.J and Dana as well as developing a connection between them not only because they had that basis of trust there after all the years of knowing each other, but the closeness and trust that they were developing over the course of the book that just deepened more over time as they truly became closer than they were before. It just made them have a really solid love connection between them because of the journey they went on together in this book, and I loved that. It made for such a satisfying ride. And it didn’t hurt that this story reminded me of Diana Palmer books that I have read in the past that I absolutely loved and adored. It was a great read. I will definitely be rereading this book again in the future.

This was the best one in the Maitland Maternity series. This was about R. J. Maitland and his secretary Dana Dillinger. The hospital is being affected by the bad publicity generated by the abandoned baby which press is spinning is his child. He comes up with the idea that if is is married it would prove he's not a playboy. Who does he pick, Dana, for a marriage of convenience. There were a couple of flashes advancing the the abandoned baby and one other missing person.

This book is part of a long and complicated series. This book tells a story. That story is mostly complete. There are a couple of sections that relate to the ongoing story of the series, but they seem isolated like they are being compartmentalized from the main story. They are not very satisfying and they are at times confusing if you haven't read the rest of the series, as I haven't. Nor do I plan to finish the series.

Other than a few sections, like those mentioned above, this story is almost entirely sensual. It's all about sex and even when they are not in a physical sex act, the story is still mostly about seduction with strong sexual innuendo.

I prefer Romance stories to be more about relationships, emotional relationships that is. There are hints of that, but only hints.

R.J. is a Neanderthal. The author dresses him up a bit and even tries to make him intelligent, competent and sophisticated. But when it comes to women, including Dana, his wife, he is all "Me man, you woman" along with a possessiveness and demand for control that is insulting and a he has personality that is dominated by pride and male superiority. One of his big things is that he wants her to share his money and give her possessions even though she values her self-sufficiency. The author tries to make Dana a worthy foil to this. I don't think she succeeds mostly because Dana has such insecurity when it comes to her feminine side. She does stand up to him and she puts him on his toes, but in my opinion his attitude toward her is perhaps somewhat abusive. (Not physically.)

After a climax of sorts, a lot of things happen that should have been stretched out more. The whole Connor thing is only one of those things. There are important parts of R.J. and Dana's story that are just so abruptly wrapped up. I was very disappointed in this.

Mature themes: I mentioned the sexual overtones that run throughout the book. That includes several moderately explicit sex scenes between legally married partners.

If you are looking for a good romance story which focuses on relationship, then I don't think this is it. If you like a story dominated by sensual aspects, then I think this is it.

Dana has been in love with her boss for as long as she has worked for him. Now her boss, R.J.Maitland, is being put out to dry by the press. His solution to improve his image takes her by surprise......a big surprise. You'll have to read the book to find out the rest. Great romance!

R.J. Maitland's reputation is in tatters after a story runs in the paper that he fathered and abandoned a child. So, he proposes a marriage in name only to his secretary, Dana. Dana has been in love with him for years and tells him that she will only agree if they have a real marriage.

This is part of the Maitland Maternity series and a quick read. I liked the first half of the book, but got bored with the hero's attitude in the second half. I was a little confused by unknown characters who I didn't know just popping up in the story with no explanation. I assume they were mentioned in previous books in the series. My rating: 2 Stars.

I really LOVE the SBC Fighter series books, so when I found this at a booksort for a Library booksale on Friday,I thought, what the hey!
Not having read the first two books in the series, I did find it hard to enter in medias res, as it were.

I much prefer the...earthier... tones of her SBC books- and the short length of this format certainly forced her to telescope a lot of the detailed characterization I have come to enjoy in her books, but all in all, a fun read and not a waste of time.

This was a great book. If you are looking for a fun book with a great story this is a light chic flick. I didn't realize it was a series and glad I read this one being the first one. The plain office help becomes beautiful and of course like most men he can't operate without her. I like the story line that gave to the characters. The Matriarch of the family has a great type A personality that I found entertaining.

This was ok. I thought this was the first book in this series but looking here I guess it wasn't. It doesn't to me anyway delve too deeply into the "baby" issue this series is about. It's definitely in there and the cause for the main portion of the book. Typical secretary in love with the oblivious boss, and it evolves from there. It's not a very "deep" book.

Meh. I'm a fan of Foster, but this one didn't appeal to me much. If you're a fan, give it a try. If you haven't read her books, don't start with this one. Go with "Jude's Law" or "Say No to Joe".
