Empty, Empty. Happy, Happy.: The Essential Teachings of a Simple Monk
People often seek happiness in one of two
1 | Head Dharma : Searching far and wide, bolstering intellect, reading volumes and studying wisdom.
2 | Heart Dharma : Practicing a few simple teachings and using them every day to make your life and our world happy.
" Are you mind-full or Mindful? " asks Venerable Bhante Sujatha
This simple monk wants you to do, not just say.
To feel, not just know.
"Through humor, raw truth and the life changing practice of loving-kindness you'll experience the joyful blessing of mindfulness and be shown a path to sustainable happiness. Easy to read and hard-to-forget, this collection of short stories is the kind of book that moves you while you read it--and then hits you later as a spiritual awakening. The author offers you a seat in the temple, where you'll be guided by the wisdom and the presence of his noble friend and teacher, Buddhist Monk Venerable Bhante Sujatha." --Mary Gustafson, author of My The Story of a Man Who Brought Happiness to America

April 14, 2020I love that Bhante insists that following Buddhist teachings and practicing mindfulness is a lifelong practice, not something you master. He makes it clear that he feels the same emotions as everyone else, and that he regularly makes mistakes, too. I think a lot of people feel deterred from trying meditation or persisting with it because of the idea that it's something you have to do perfectly to benefit from. Bhante is a world famous monk who has dedicated his life to his practice, and even he admits there is always room for improvement.
This biography really breaks down an invisible wall between everyday people and monks. The stories he shares are relatable to those in Western society, and shows how much we can all benefit from living in the present moment and spreading love.

Just like when sitting in the Blue Lotus listening to him on a Saturday morning! Bhante is such a gift as a teacher, and I especially liked the narrator, a book I want to read immediately again and plan to. You really need to contemplate and savor each lesson.

The title refers to Bhante as a "Simple Monk," but his teachings offer readers messages that penetrate our facades and leave much to contemplate. Easy to read these entertaining vignettes. It's the kind of book that once you finish, you are ready to read it again.

I highly recommend this lovely, simple little book. Bhante’s short stories pack powerful meaning into each one and may just change your life.
