Crossing the prairie of what was once the United States, Turner will face a blood-crazed cult, a governor who wants power more than life itself, and a trio of beautiful women who will help him toward his ultimate goal: ridding the world of bloodsuckers.

A interesting new series.

The author has done a good job in telling the story in such a way as to draw you into the story. The characters are good and interesting and the author worked to his strong suit in writing in a post apocalyptic world. The MC was interesting and powerful but the ladies are just as interesting and important to the story as the MC. Overall I enjoyed it and give it a 4.5out of 5.

This was a really enjoyable book with a strong story and interesting characters... basically something that I can happily recommend. However, there are a few issues holding it back from a full 5 stars:

1 - It was a little underdeveloped - By the end of the novel I am not 100% clear on what a Bonemaker was or could do, the vampires were also a little underdeveloped in regards to knowing what they could do and their limitations. I think that another 10-15% world-building all round would have done a much better job of fleshing this book out.

2 - It was pretty short - Sometimes this is a plus in novels as they have to be fast-paced, but in this case, I was always left wanting more. I could have done with more time on character development and relationships, more time on world-building (as I pointed out earlier), and more time on the setting, location and descriptions to get a better sense for where I was.

Overall this was a really enjoyable book that had all the right ingredients that a 5-star recipe calls for, just not enough quantity to truly develop the flavour.

Turner West is a bonemaker. With silver threaded throughout his body, he's a vampire killing machine, until he falls for one. Granted, Karina is a different kind of vampire, except for the still needs to kill to eat thing. So, not so different?

There's plenty of action in this and that and strong pacing carried me through the story. The world build is weak. There's this great premise with Turner West (cool name) being threaded up like Wolverine, gave him a cool moniker like bonemaker, and then explained precisely nothing about why or how that helps him kill vampires. Perhaps it keeps him from getting killed? Except it doesn't. They still chomp all over him at will.

And why does Karina need to kill to eat? She doesn't, because Turner feeds her, so why does she kill?

It's the kind of story that doesn't go too deep, but if you're looking for some light fantasy action, Bloodlands is right up your alley.

Good

I am extremely ambivalent about this book. Almost sitting on the fence... I honestly almost did not finish the book, but in the end decided to just pull through and finish, and I don’t think at this stage I will read the second book. There was just too much talking, I did not like the action sequences all that much, all in all this was one of my least liked Daniel Pearce books.

There is little to no apparent appreciation towards women, if the main character and author describe them as "whores", even if they are currently working as "prostitutes, courtesans, sex workers, call girls, street walkers, etc...". Although most are "forced into this kind of slavery", the main character and author treat these "victims" as "sub-human"...
The second thing is, the Bonemaker, main character, saves a 15 year old "whore" and then returns her to the uncle that sold her into prostitution and slavery... Even worse, the main character (author) hinted that the "uncle" would sexually assault the underage minor under his care. This might be how things work in Montana/Wyoming, but in the civilized world, statutory rape, continual child abuse, neglect, abandonment and slavery are heinous crimes toward underage girls... A person that "doesn't get their hands bloodied" but is responsible for the blood, (main character/author) is an accessory to all those crimes...The Bonemaker, main character, "saved the 15 year old girl from the vampire", bought her from the madam for 300 gold pieces and took her back to the man that originally sold her/constantly abused her...There is something deeply wrong with the rationality, logic and common sense of this story...
I do not get why, some people think that because it is an "urban-fantasy/Sci-Fi-fictional story" then they can let loose their inner psychopath/sociopath and forget about everything that is legal, decent or good in the world. So, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were never ratified by Montana/Wyoming, this author, or his main character?? Is it because this is supposed to be a dark-dystopian-post-apocalyptic world?? What is the difference between the attitude of the "Bonemaker", main character, and the attitude of the author, that wrote his sociopathic/psychopathic personality?? The vampire at least was going to kill the girl at once, but the Bonemaker and the Uncle will make sure that she has a longer life of suffering/slavery/sexual assaults??? Is that the Wyoming way in a post-apocalyptic fictional story???
It's not just that, there is little to no character descriptions...People created by this story barely have a name, the girl had a name and an age...the Bonemaker could have been anybody...to prove my point, the illustrator made him into a "spy-slick-kind-of-character"...a person that has no regard for human life, no respect for women and children, is not the guy "portrayed on the cover"...he looks more like the bearded fellow in the picture by the information about the book...
World development is not a series of actions/adventures by the characters created, is how this fantasy/fictional world is "organized" (political, religious, social, economic, commerce, what they do, what they eat, where and what they work at, etc."...In this dystopian world, who needs "deadly vampires" if the people are rotten (depraved, corrupt and criminal) enough?? The humans of this world deserve to become extinct and are doing a hell-of-a-great-job at killing each other off (without the help of the vampires and other monster-creatures)...thanks to the imagination and writing of the author of this story...

Introduction:
Greetings from the icy realm of HowlStrom, where winter's embrace lasts a century. I am Kiba Snowpaw, a 36-year-old alpha male Ice Wolf with a penchant for gaming and a mastery over ice magic. Today, I delve into the chilling world of "Bloodlands" by Daniel Pierce, a tale that resonates with the cold determination of our kind.

Basic Plot Summary:
In a world where vampires have seized control, humanity's last hope lies in Turner West, a Bonemaker. With silver coursing through him, Turner possesses the unique ability to Unmake these bloodsuckers. As he traverses the remnants of the United States, he confronts a sinister cult, a power-hungry governor, and is aided by three captivating women. Yet, an ancient vampire, drawn by Turner's actions, threatens the very existence of humankind.

Analysis/Evaluation:
"Bloodlands" masterfully blends urban fantasy, post-apocalyptic settings, and classic vampire lore. The litRPG elements, though subtle, add depth, making it a treat for seasoned gamers like myself. The world-building is reminiscent of the harsh winters of HowlStrom, painting a bleak yet intriguing picture.

Characters:
Turner West: A beacon of hope, embodying resilience and determination.
The Ancient Vampire: A looming threat, representing the impending doom of humanity.
The Trio of Women: Diverse and integral to Turner's journey, each bringing their unique strengths.

Structure:
The narrative flows seamlessly, balancing action, introspection, and character development. The litRPG nuances are interwoven skillfully, ensuring even those unfamiliar can grasp its essence.

Impact:
The tale serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of resistance, mirroring the icy resolve of the wolves of HowlStrom.

Hook and Thesis:
A lone warrior's stand against a world of darkness is a timeless allure. "Bloodlands" rejuvenates this trope with its unique blend of genres, making it a must-listen for dark fantasy enthusiasts.

Praise and Critique:
Pierce's portrayal of a vampire-dominated world is both chilling and captivating. Turner West is an inspiring protagonist. However, as some reviewers like Gareth Otton pointed out, the world-building could benefit from further depth, especially regarding the Bonemaker's abilities and the nature of the vampires.

Evaluation:
For those seeking a tale of resistance, determination, and the age-old battle between humans and vampires, "Bloodlands" is a commendable choice. The litRPG elements add a modern twist, making it a refreshing read.

Comparison:
While "Bloodlands" stands out in its unique blend of genres, it does draw parallels with other post-apocalyptic tales. However, its fusion of urban fantasy and litRPG sets it apart, offering a fresh perspective on a familiar theme.

Conclusion:
From the icy heart of HowlStrom, I, Kiba Snowpaw, find "Bloodlands" a chilling yet enthralling tale. It's a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, much like the enduring spirit of the Ice Wolves. While it has its flaws, its strengths make it a worthy addition to any audiobook collection. May your journeys through its pages be as adventurous as a trek through the snow-covered landscapes of HowlStrom.

Pass this up

Some of the author's other works, while having problems, are worth reading. This one isn't. A good author will try to improve in his writing as time goes on. Daniel Pierce is not improving but seems to be getting worse.

Most of his problems are self inflicted... pure laziness. A couple of examples from this book are: bronze does not rust, semiautomatic pistols do not click on empty chambers like in the movies, forgetting which character has a bolt hole, forgetting which direction the characters are traveling. There are more but this is what I could remember off the top of my head.

This story has decent editing, which is the only reason I gave 2 stars.

Good but..Erratic?

About two thirds of the way through the book, stuff just starts happening. The plot progresses and moves in ways where it's made apparent that's its urgent... but we don't know why. The author also continues to forget about some things he's already said and then contradict it a little later. His writing style is so engaging and energetic that I hate how all if his stories I've read so far share all of these overarching problems. Also, the harem element is super weak and the romance scenes are unsatisfying, despite some of the relationships being well developed.

Post Apocalyptic Vampires meet a man modified to beat them

This was an enjoyable if very short book, but the abruptness of the bloody ending was very off-putting and seemed rushed and out of place that it was worthy of the removal of a review star. Not much of a harem in this book either, if you consider the requirement for a harem to be an ongoing sexual relationship between the MC and more than one female. The story finishes at a point where the author could leave it as a short standalone book rather than a series.

Excellent Vampire Adventure

This was, for me, a very enjoyable story. It isn’t the run of the mill story. Instead presented an adventure based on a vampire killer and a few survivors with similar inclinations to just kill vampires. Great dialogue, descriptive story telling, and likable characters all blending together to accentuate the post apocalyptic world. Loved the flow and plot. I highly recommend this book to those who enjoy vampire tales.

The book was good but not as good as the authors future Reborn Series. There are some contradictions in it. If Hearts bane flowers stop vampires from crossing through them, then how does Karina do it?? I don’t think I’ll buy book 2 of this series. However every other book I’ve read by Daniel Pierce has been outstanding. I’ve read about 9 including this one. I will definitely read more of his other stories.

The author is plain lazy on this one. No real world building, no timeline. If there was a any world building, like some post apocalyptic earth most if not all the vamps and animals would be long dead because of the volume of blood needed to survive, at least you wouldn't be running into one every damn day. The MC is just another human, not likeable, has smarts of a toaster, nothing really special other than being saved by other people every time he has to go up against 2 or more vamps.

Good read, and a little different.

I like the originality of the story. The components of the book were handled well and balanced out with action to keep it interesting. The relationship between the MC and the rest of the crew was a bit different this time around. But it was still very enjoyable, much like the other series by Pierce. Great read. Looking forward to the next book.

Frustrating read

The story stated with a plot hole and never got better. What was a vampire doing in a brothel if passing for human is so hard.
And the fights just seem ridiculous. The hero and his party should all have been dead many times from gunshot wounds. And the whole story really was not any fun.

Pretty decent

There were some continuity issues occasionally that bugged me a bit, but overall it was a pretty good story. I'd like to see a bit more character development or backstory in the next book. The action scenes were fast paced and well written and like most actual fights were usually pretty brutal

I tried to get into this but it's really not my type of fantasy. If you like zombie apocalypse stuff this is very similar. Just substitute vampire for zombie. Also has the obligatory love interest of most urban fantasy. This one is between the magically enhanced Hunter and The Good Vampire gal (with steamy sex chapter.)

The world building in this book has promise. I was going to rate it four stars, but there was a scene where one of the female side characters seeks out the MC to have sex with him and it felt so weird and like harem forced. The cheese factor of this moment was too strong for me to take this seriously 😂

Turner West, vampire hunter, vampire lover.

I really enjoyed this story and I normally don't like vampire tales. Turner is a fun guy who through no fault of his own, falls in love in a time when loving anyone is dangerous. I can't wait to see Seth again. Great work Daniel Pierce.

Vampires abound

Lots of vampires in this novel, some good, some not. Main character is a vampire Hunter and provides lots of action. Story keeps moving and held my interest, the world is pretty grim/dark, but there were a few light spots.

I’ve started 5 of Daniel Pierce’s book series so far, trying two books in two of them & stopping at one each for the other three. Each Series having an interesting sounding blurb based on Sci-Fi/Fantasy plot lines that were potentially fascinating and in many ways equivalent to dozens if not hundreds of other books I’ve read & enjoyed. These books have earned an average rating of 1.1428 Stars, per book I’ve sampled from the books I’ve tried. To say it another way, I’m writing this in March 2024, and my notes say I read all of these books of his last year, yet I recall almost nothing from the time invested.

Interesting dialogue quotes in my notes? No. Philosophical pondering since Sci-Fi so often lends itself to metaphor & approaching modern problems from unique paradigms? Nope, none of that either. Harem romances or sex scenes to drool over? Nada!

So, do yourself a favor while also saving yourself some time and AVOID THIS AUTHOR like the plague! It’s drivel-on-a-stick.
