I first watched the Thai show Love Sick and was ecstatic to find out that it was based on a book! I found almost the whole book translated on Kudalakorn's blog and the rest translated on wattpad, and I quickly became addicted to it. The characters are, in my opinion, well fleshed out. The characters and the challenges that they face feel realistic, especially Noh and Phun as they are faced with all these things that they don't understand. I found myself transfixed with the writing style as well. The way that the author phrased things was done so beautifully, and felt so simplistic at the same time. It was funny, it was heartbreaking, and it was filled with so much love. Love Sick is definitely one of my favourite books of all time. Thank god I decided to give this book (and the tv series) a chance.
The English translation is only until chapter 60, so there's five more chapters left to the story. The translator said she won't be updating for a long while, so I'm considering this story finished for now.
I read the translation of the book as I didn't master Thai yet.
I have to say that the book going exactly like the series in terms of the main narrative. What the series didn't show us is how evil and cunning Phun is. True, White did a lot of justice to this roll, but he made Puhn so guy like- adorable, very handsome, smart and basically good. It didn't show us how he enjoyed putting Noh through the ringer a lot of times. Noh is Captain and Captain is Noh. In the book and in the show, he was amazing, sensitive, friendly. His inner thoughts always cracked me up.
I loved how the book pinpointed on the main couple, without unnecessary complications from the side couples. Although Ohm and Mick, Per and Mawin and even my lovable Earn (in the show and in the book I felt so much for him) are mentioned here and there through Noh's thoughts. Oh, the most ghastly thing.... no Pete in the book. Like AT ALL.
In conclusion, I felt like I went through the journey with Phun and Noh. I didn't came out scattered free, but I wouldn't replace this journey with anything else.
Now that I realized this BL live action was actually adapted from e-book, and the English translation is available too, I'm gonna devour this one soon. XD
The first time I saw this BL drama is from a fan made video clip that appeared on FB feed. I thought the romance is sweet and cute, like they're only holding hand but shit their sweet and innocent gesture gave me butterflies! XD And I was squealing hard inside my heart of course. ;p But I was kinda lazy to Google and watch the English subtitle version...yeah, I stopped watching TV drama entirely since 2010 or 2011, I'm actually not a TV person, don't have TV, not that fond of movie and show too, so yeah.. around 2010-2011, I just lost all the urge to download Asian drama to watch, and decided to dedicate my time to reading since then. As for Love Sick series, whether I'd watch the live action or not after reading the book, it might depend on the e-book.
I'm so biased it's not even funny. I love Love Sick The Series TV series that's my absolute favorite and when I learnt that it's based on a book of course I had to find it! Some awesome fans had translated this into English, since I don't know jack shit about Thai language (but now I'm learning on my own). Love Sick is set in high school and there are actually many characters, but mostly it's about Phun and Noh. Noh is the president of the music club and Phun is the student council secretary. Noh has budget problems and Phun is supposed to date a girl his parents have chosen and he already has one, so what do they do? Phun makes Noh play his boyfriend so that his little sister would help them out. The make-believe relationship starts to actually grow as the boys begin having real feelings for each other.
I'm just saying, but this is so damn cute. The story is told from Noh's perspective and it's a little bit different to the series. I really love the characters though, even though Phun is made more manly here compared to Noh as opposed to the series. I love it how idiotic Noh can be and how he and his friends slap each other and tease one another. It's extremely hilarious! In a way it feels that the series gathered all these bits and pieces and created something more coherent compared to the book. I'm not saying this is bad or anything, but it's kind of hard to follow the story at times. The translation is OK, although it has its problems with grammatical errors and such, but I at least could overlook those. I was really amazed how fast Phun and Noh ended up having sex at the beginning, which didn't happen in the series and it felt out of place, although the sex scenes were light and handled smoothly (meaning there was hardly any action anywhere, which worked fine). I hope someone would actually publish this in English with a more profound translation and also the chapters 62 till 66 that were basically impossible to find or the quality of those were so low that it was hard to read them.
I've read this book in translated version. If I'm not mistaken, it's still four chapters left, but the uploader seems to postpone uploading new chapters so that I consider it as the end of the novel for now.
About this book, I freaking love it! I feel unusually connected with most of the characters as if I myself were witnessing with my own eyes about what happened as the story develop, from Noh and Phun being barely acquaintances to adorable couples. I lost count of how many times I awwwwed while reading it. I wouldn't be surprised when this book ends up being my top favorite realistic fiction in 2015. It's surely going to be in my reread list.
Phun and Noh have their own place in my heart <3 this story is lovely. Had to read the novel after finishing the drama because I just couldn't let go of these guys!
Juro, essa novel entrou para a lista de confortos, ela me marcou muito forte igual "Don't you like me" e "MouMou" .
My god.. this was so cute. I don't regret spending my quality time watching this. I got butterflies in my stomach and giggling like an idiot every time I saw them just holding hands and stare each other. Gah!
And there's also season 2 which much more interesting than season 1. ^_^
The story was kinda cute at first but their undecisiveness got too frustrating to the point of getting boring to me, which is why i DNF it, after trying so hard to enjoy it. I gave the book a shot after not really enjoying the series either but i guess this story just isn't for me.
Love Sick: The Chaotic Lives of Blue Shorts Guys by Indrytimes – 4/5 Stars
I gave "Love Sick: The Chaotic Lives of Blue Shorts Guys" by Indrytimes 4 stars because it's a great book that brings back pure nostalgia, especially for fans of the Thai BL series. It's fun, engaging, and captures the essence of youthful romance in a uniquely Thai context.
Why I Loved It
"Love Sick" tells the story of Phun and Noh, two high school boys whose lives become intertwined through a fake boyfriend deal. Phun is coerced into this charade by his sister, who is a fan of yaoi (boys' love stories), to escape an arranged relationship his father has planned. Noh, on the other hand, needs Phun's help to fund his music club. What starts as pretense soon blossoms into genuine affection, navigating the complexities of teenage life, school politics, and the discovery of love.
The book is a delightful blend of humor, heart, and high school antics, reflecting the vibrant culture and the unique perspective of Thai youth. It's the kind of story that makes you laugh, cringe at the awkwardness of first love, and root for the characters. The narrative is light-hearted yet manages to delve into the emotional undercurrents of young love, making it more than just a romantic comedy.
The Charm of Thai BL
What makes "Love Sick" stand out is its authentic portrayal of Thai school life, the camaraderie among friends, and the quirky, endearing way it tackles romance. Indrytimes captures the essence of what makes BL stories appealing - the slow build of relationships, the playful teasing, and the heart-melting moments of realization. The characters are well-rounded with their own quirks and struggles, which adds depth to what could have been a simple love story.
Why It's a 4 Star
This novel is a great read, especially for fans of the genre or those who are looking for something light and heartwarming. While the plot follows a somewhat predictable path, the journey is filled with joy, laughter, and the kind of teen drama that keeps you turning the pages. My only minor critique is that the characters sometimes lean into stereotypes, but this is largely forgiven due to the charm and authenticity of the setting and interactions.
Final Thoughts
"Love Sick: The Chaotic Lives of Blue Shorts Guys" is a testament to why the Thai BL genre has captured hearts around the world. It's a nostalgic trip for me, reminding me why I fell in love with the series adaptation. The book is a fun, engaging read that celebrates love in all its awkward, beautiful forms, making it a must-read for anyone who appreciates a good, light-hearted romance set against the backdrop of Thai school life.
I really liked the story, it was cute how well they got along with each other and how their relationship evolved. Honestly it remind me of my best friend, when he told me he had a bf i was like Phun's sister except for the fact that asked him if he had brother lol. It was really sweet and shows the struggles that teenagers go through when they are falling in love wether it's a boy or a girl.. It was well written and made me cry sometimes while I laughed a lot especially since I love Om's caracters the most kkkk even tho i love the main caracters noh's best friend is definitely is something!! It is a read i would recommand to anyone honestly I wish that my friends were thai so that could read it. Definitely a shame not to have translate it into english or french !!
"It takes barely any time for us to fall in love, so why is it such complete torture when it's time we need to say goodbye?"
This book is, hands down, one of the best love stories I've read, ever. Like most people I watched the drama first, and knew that I had to read the novel. The story between Noh and Phun is so incredibly sweet, and at times, heartbreaking. I found myself crying at certain scenes, then laughing at others. As an introductory to Thai novels and shows, it left quite the impact.
