Puffs

Rate this book
The script of the smash hit Off-Broadway comedy PUFFS is now yours to own! For seven years, a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs...who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world. The New York Times proclaims PUFFS, "A fast-paced romp though 'Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic.' For POTTERphiliacs who grew up alongside Potter and are eager to revisit his word, PUFFS exudes a jovial, winking fondness for all things Harry!" Puffs (One Act Edition for Young Wizards) is the one act, family friendly script of Puffs from the original production in NYC. It features a forward by playwright Matt Cox, deleted scenes, additional Zach Smith monologues by Nick Carrillo, and a glossary. This publication is suitable for wizards aged 8+.

What it's about: While many people know the story of a Certain Boy who Didn't Die and Discovered He Could Do Magic, that kid wasn't the only one to attend a Certain School of Female Magic and Male Magic. In fact, there were a whole lot of other students there who were, well, not nearly as good at things. This is their story! For Young Wizards!

What I thought: This is billed as a shorter and more young-person-appropriate version of the original Puffs. In terms of script length, this "90 minute" version is four pages shorter than the "110 minute" version, so I'm not sure how that's supposed to be.

Also, while the curse words (English, not magical) have been removed, there are still a few places with some rather adult themes. I purchased both the 2 Act "adult" version and the 1 Act "young wizard" version with the intent of previewing the latter for use at my middle school. If I do use the younger version, I will probably do a little bit of editing to slightly alter a few moments that seem a little "advanced" for 7th graders.

Why I rated it like I did: This is still a really funny and entertaining story. I think the audience would need to be some serious Boy-Who-Didn't-Die heads to really get it; and there are a lot of jokes only their parents are going to get, like the running gag about Viktor only saying lines from Ivan Drago in Rocky IV. But it's a show with a good heart and plenty of goofiness, so even if they're not getting the references, I think this could be a really entertaining play.
