우린 너무 몰랐다: 해방, 제주 4∙3과 여순민중항쟁

도올 김용옥은 해방 이후 지금까지 우리의 의식 구조를 지배한 근원이라 할 수 있는 해방 직후의 역사를 파헤친다. 벼락같이 찾아온 8월 15일 해방을 기뻐하지 않고 저주한 수많은 사람들, 일제 강점기의 지배 계층과 그에 부역한 사람들은 미군정이 시작되자 미군정에 빌붙어 세력을 이어갔다. 남쪽 사람들에게 해방은 채 한 달도 안 되는 짧은 시간이었다. 해방 정국에서 기회주의적으로 권력을 쟁취한 세력은 권력의 안위를 위해 가혹한 폭력을 행사하는데, 제주와 여수 순천에서는 엄청난 수의 사람이 목숨을 잃는다. 이 과정에서 대한민국의 현대사를 관통하는 "빨갱이" 관념이 권력의 정치적 도구로 자리를 잡게 되고, 아직도 우리는 이 해방 정국에서 생성된 구조의 굴레에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 김용옥은 제주와 여순의 민중항쟁을 제대로 이해하고 당시 만들어진 굴레에서 벗어나는 것이야 말로 진정한 해방을 성취하는 것이라고 갈파한다.

Never read any book with such a mixed feeling as this one.

Main contents of the book is very compelling and the author backs his argument with direct evidence.
Also connecting ancient history (Koryeo, Chosun dynasty) to the modern history of south regions of Korea brings very unique perspectives. At many aspects, his approach to the issue and his arguments are different almost revolutionary.
The main argument he makes in the book is, Jejo 4.3. and Yeo-Sun incidents should be viewed as popular uprising. In addition, the idea that these uprising was backed by Korean communists are wrong.

However, the author comes through too much in the book. Especially earlier chapters are riddled with his over-blown ego. I believe without these unnecessary stories, his arguments made had been read more credible.
