Skylar's always been a bit strange, seeing things where others couldn't. She's drawn by folklore and mythology, but unfortunately there's not a lot of call for that in the world of corporate internships... Or is there? A strange encounter at the job fair followed by an attack by some kind of man-creature and suddenly her world's been flips. She's a veilwalker, someone who can slip between realms of reality where everything she's every learned about is real. Elves, centaurs, Valkyrie maidens, dryads; all things nasty and nice, but not quite in the way myths suggest. She must decide if she's willing to join an agency who polices these creatures when they turn up where they aren't supposed to. But by being there, she's introduced to danger from an unknown being, one who wants to capture Skylar for their own nefarious purposes...
I like the premise, all a bit Men In Black meets mythology. What didn't work for me was how there's a lot of telling and not a lot of showing. Characters beyond Skylar are just physical descriptions (although sometimes the mythological beings are just named rather than described, so knowing what they were could be a bit confusing). I wished things could slow down enough for character relationships to happen, as we just don't have the time to get to know anyone or how they feel towards each other. The dialogue could feel a bit formal and stilted at times, and the narration did have a fair few cases of the same word being repeated in close succession (personal preference maybe, but I found it immersion-breaking).
I guess the fast-pace and lack of side character development just didn't appeal to me. If you're looking for an uncomplicated YA urban fantasy/folklore mash-up you might enjoy it more than I did.
-I received a free copy of the ebook as an ARC from the author's mailing list-
I received an ARC with no obligation to review, but I'm happy to say that it was a great book and I can't wait to read the other books in the series. I really enjoyed this book, in addtion to the very appealing and reluctant main character (Skylar) it also featured quite the cast of characters, (and monsters!) mostly familiar types.... elves selkies centaurs etc but also some that were new to me. It had a nice blend of humour, action and story/character development. We follow Skylar's discovery and development of surprising skills.... she is only human after all! We are also introduced to some mysterious characters who will obviously be part of the story arc in the later books. I like that this book came to a satisfying conclusion (no cliffhanger!) but left lots of questions to be answered in the subsequent books.
Skylar Dufrense is eager to move onto the next step of the life she leads. When she heads for the college's career fair, all she can think about is the slew of possibilities that may be afforded to her. All she wants is the chance to make something of herself. A chance to live life as she sees fit.
Things take an unexpected turn when she approaches a table for an organization she's never heard of before. To make matters worse, she's seeing things that aren't there. If she's to survive whatever's coming for her, she'll have to learn everything there is to know about the dormant power coursing through her veins. Only then will she be able to vanquish those who've made it their mission to take her down at every turn.
Shadowed Veil is one of those books that makes you want to keep on reading. With every turn of the page, you're plunged deeper into Skylar's world. A world where nothing is as it seems. One she needs to find her footing in pronto if she's to survive at every turn.
I've enjoyed Emery's style of storytelling. It's easy to envision the world he's created. He's given us characters that are quite relatable, who live in an uncertain world. He's taken so many paranormal elements and molded them in such a way that you honestly find yourself wanting to explore the world he's crafted. Can't wait to see what comes next for Skylar.
Skylar was a junior in college unsure of where she was going. When she saw a plain booth at a job fair she was intrigued. That’s when her life changes. She became lost in a world of magical creatures trying to find the magic within herself. I found this book to be very intriguing. So many weird creatures but fully described and easily imagined. The world building was very visual even though there were many. Skylar found herself in a world where she didn’t know how she fit in. Her Valkyrie friend, Kaia, took her on an unauthorized mission where Skylar’s magical talents were stretched beyond what she thought she was capable. This was a very entertaining story with many plot twists that kept me glued to the pages. I’m interested to find out how Skylar progresses in the next book.
I enjoyed this adventure about Skylar, a not so ordinary human, (not that Skylar knew that she wasn't ordinary) who gets thrown into a world with magical creatures and chaos.
The books sets the foundation of this story and what it is going to be about. There are many twist and turns that happened along the way and this helps to develop Skylar on who she is and what she can become. I'm interested to see how all the characters develop and interact with each other and to find out who lines with good or evil.
This book kept me interested and I will like to continue to read this story to find out what is going to happen to Skylar and the other characters we have met along the way.
Enchanting story about Skylar and her discovery of her abilities to move through time and use magic. The story includes many different magical creatures, some good and some bad. Skylar is being trained to make sure magical creatures who wander to other worlds are returned to their own. But a malevolent creature wants her and is trying to tempt her to comer over to the dark side.
"This book was amazing. Enjoyed how well it was written. Sorry when it ended. There are 4 so far in this series. Looking forward to reading those also. I received a copy of this in order to review. "
I received an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review. It is not my usual genre of Fantasy but I really enjoyed it. The characters developed well and the storyline was exciting and kept me reading. I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.
Loved this new series classified as YA but read it anyway. Such fun, as we follow a girl do to leave College as she goes to a job fair and finds more then she expected. Soon after she is attacked and falls through a Veil into another World filled with storybook characters. I'm hooked, want more!
Skylar is in college when she is dragged into a world she never knew existed. Trying to navigate not only the new world but also new powers. Skylar is an interesting character and I look forward to finding out what happens next.
This was an amazing book. Well written, original, exciting! The characters were different than your usual fantasy creatures and I loved the difference. I can’t wait to read the next book!
I liked this book that was filled with adventure and mystical creatures. It was about a lady who finds she has more abilities than she thought she was capable of. She also learns that she can go to places that she has never seen on any map or globe. To me it has the same feel as "Men In Black" except this book has mythology creatures that I studied in school which was better because I could get an image of what the creatures looked like.
