Set in the 1600's during the time of the plague and the Great fire of London, this is the story of a young maiden, who is lured to London by her husband, Frank. But instead of the paradise her husband promised her, she finds instead, a world of debauchery, filth and degradation.

When he returns to sea he leaves her destitute and fearing she will starve, she scours the filthy streets of London looking for work. Fortunately, she finds work in a Bakehouse in Pudding Lane, working for a Mr Farynor.

When Frank returns from sea, he takes immense pleasure in physically and mentally abusing Mary, and when she can stand no more, she returns to Kent, only to find that her father has been declared bankrupt and they have lost the farm. She is forced to return to London. However, there is a small glimmer of hope, now that they will all be living in one room, she hopes that Frank will leave her alone. But alas, Frank rents another room for her father and he becomes even more sadistic towards her, thinking up new ways to torture and humiliate her.

A feeling of desolation and a lack of hope eats away at Mary, and some days, she couldn't have cared less if she lived or died. She was quickly becoming an invisible member of the population and there was no one to champion her cause.

However, despite the abuse she suffers at the hands of her husband, Mary finds an inner strength and plots her escape, but will things go to plan, or will the forces of nature hinder her.

Mary has many obstacles to overcome. Will she have the acumen and strength needed to fight her way out of poverty, or will she flounder in the cesspit that is London?

Will Ashton Newington act on his feelings and come to her aid, or will a chance meeting with Richard, a man of means, change her life forever.

But most of all, will she recognise that window of opportunity when it opens up for her? Or will Frank break her spirit.
