Historical?

This book had me angry from the beginning. It is totally historically inaccurate and contains errors that could have been checked easily on line. The language is also unreadable at times, I had to read several passages a few times to get the meaning.
A total waste of money.

Atrocious Punctuation

The main character was sickly sweet and the punctuation was bad enough to distract from the truly bad plot. Lots of anachronistic language sealed this book’s one-star rating.

Amelia and the guardian of her heart ❤❤❤❤❤

Amelia is sent home to England from the only home she knew in India because she inherited money 💰💰property from her father's two brothers upon their deaths as they'd had no children of their own.
Her mother gives her a package 📦before the ship sets sail ⛵containing the paperwork pertaining to her inheritance and tells her to study them before disembarking from the ship in England. Along with the papers,is a letter from her mother stating that her betrothed will be meeting her along with her Guardian. She becomes angry that her mother would set up a betrothal between her and her step-brother Ambrose, a man she's never met.
Amelia takes an instant disliking to Ambrose, and an instant attraction to her guardian Alexander, whom she tries to dissuade from his role. Ambrose keeps trying to get her to accept an engagement between the two of them and when she refuses he contrives with her mother to give him another chance at convincing Amelia to accept him.
Amelia and Alexander have fallen in love 💘but a marriage between a Guardian and his ward is frowned upon and he has to be released from the Guardianship before that can happen.

Amelia was born and reared in India where her beloved father served. She speaks and acts like a native born Indian wearing a sari with bare belly, climbing trees and farming although she speaks and has been taught the English manners of her true people. Her father died when she was fourteen and her mother has remarried another English officer. At age twenty both her father's brothers are killed in a carriage accident leaving her as the only offspring of the Wright family and heir to the whole estate. She must make the four month sea voyage to go to England and assume the duties of countess. Her mother gave her a box of documents regarding her inheritance to study on the voyage. Some weeks into the trip she begins her study of the papers and eventually comes to a letter from her mother that infuriates her. She has been assigned a guardian to guide her in her affairs and betrothed to her stepfather's younger son. She knows neither of these men but what a story the meeting and dealing with them make--all the way to a meeting with the Prince Regent!

I love reading a story with a strong no-nonsense heroine. Amelia Wright is a kick-@ss heroine. She grew up respecting all around her regardless of station or class. She does have a temper but did learn to control it. She is wise beyond her years. She was a young lady when she arrived in England. In several short months she turned into a responsible mistress of her inherited estate and became a woman to be reckoned with, respected and admired. Alexander Wentworth, Duke of Wentworth, is an older man. He is 15 years Amelia's senior. He has a reputation of being a wise, kind and thoughtful man. He is well respected by his staff and the people that live on his properties. Alexander is a loving father to his young daughter. When Amelia and Alexander meet sparks fly. Even though this is an older man younger woman situation, the way it is written brings much needed maturity to this sub-genre. There were a few times Amelia showed her young ways. However, most of the time she exemplified herself as a equal to Alexander. This story is refreshing to read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this book in the beginning. I even expected Ambrose to be a creep. What I could not forgive was her mother. Any woman who claims in her thoughts that she loves her daughter and treats her as such, does not care.

I stopped reading this book because I could not get over this.
I know that this is a romance, and will have a happy ending. I know this.
But I also keep thinking of the last line of The Princess Bride (William Goldman): Life isn't fair. It's just fairer than death, that's all.
And given that, I didn't waste any more of my time.

Thoughts: DNF at 51%. The author was born in the US and then at the age of 7 moved to Europe, France apparently. She has studied French lit. She has written 25 books and they seem to get pretty good ratings. HOWEVER, this books is written in rather stilted language as if by a person whose first language is not English and it makes it rather awkward and uncomfortable to read. I got tired of it about halfway through.

I went back and finished the book. The story is good, but the language is the problem. It needs a really good proofreader to go through it to make the wording flow.

A GUARDIAN FOR THE RAVISHING COUNTESS : was slow and plodding for me. It seemed to take forever. I liked the storyline and hero, but the sub-plots were not fleshed out. It seemed everything got the same treatment.

THIS HELD PROMISE, BUT NEARLY HALFWAY INTO THE BOOK I JUST LOST INTEREST IN THE MCs COURTSHIP LOL. THE PLOT IS ONE I'VE READ BEFORE BY OTHER AUTHORS, BUT SADLY THIS ONE DIDN'T MEET THE EXPECTATIONS I HAD.

ALEXANDER is our heroine's guardian and for once, he's a guardian who willingly accepted this responsibility based on the fact that he used to be Amelia's father's mentee. Alexander is a nice fellow, despite being a Duke, he isn't arrogant or god forbid haughty. He's actually quite down to Earth, and is also an adequate Father compared to most men of his times. Dutiful too, judging by how he married for duty and not love. Alexander has never experienced grand love until he meets Amelia, the exotic Indian British young woman who is to become his ward. He's supposed to help her settle in and marry her off but things get complicated when he falls for her instead. Alas, their chemistry lacked something and I was looking for something much more intense. Mayhaps it's Alexander's eagerness to marry her instead of NOT? I do so enjoy the perverseness of moments whereby the hero denies himself what he wants.

AMELIA is a carefree but spirited young woman who is sent back to England after living in India for 20 years since her birth. Unlike most English ladies, she's quite wild in comparison and very headstrong. Uncertainty plagues her when she returns to England, not knowing if she will fit in or like it there but her worries disappear when she meets the Duke of Wentworth, Alexander. Even if he's 15 years older, there's just something about him that captivates her and comparing with the other young men who is courting her, Alexander make them look like hapless boys.

OVERALL this was an easy story. I only wished the plot was much more thicker, and the characters that much more complicated. Perhaps then it would have held my attention longer.

India or England

Amelia Wright was English by family, but born and raised in India. She loves it there, the culture, people, and life itself. Now she is named as heir to the Earldom. She reluctantly agrees and takes the four month journey to England.

On the way she goes over the papers to start learning about her new responsibility. She finds a letter from her mother telling her she is also betrothed to her step-brother and she has a guardian.

Alexander, Duke of Nottinghamshire, he sent several letters to Amelia so she may feel at ease around him and accept his guardianship. He tells her about himself, how her father influenced his way of things, and about his daughter.

Ambrose, the step-brother, is a gambler, womanizer, and scum. He degrades anyone he deems below him. He is only after the money. He and Amelia' s mother are in cahoots together unbeknownst to anyone.

Eli, a Baron, minor character but important to the plot. A good hearted, cherry fellow that does the right thing in the end.

Here are the basics. I'm this thrilling, plot thing story you have great, intriguing characters, that take you on a roller coaster ride of fun, mystery, and intrigue. You have great banter, quick witty and other n sarcastic remarks, plot twists that will keep you guessing and a fun, fantastic read.

Promising Plot, Horrible Writing

The storyline starts out strong with sweet characters and a challenge ahead. About a third of the way through the book, it is as if the author stopped proofreading or the editor got tired of correcting and I felt like I was reading something written by an elementary school student. After much reflection, I came to the conclusion that this book was either written by someone with promising writing ability who did not have confidence in her own choice of words and therefore, was constantly consulting and choosing words from a thesaurus...or English is not the author's first language and therefore struggles with word choice and sentence phrasing.

The plot is intriguing, but reading the story is, at times, painful; because of the awkward turns of phrase and unusual word choices. A good proofreader or editor would have their work cut out for them, but their contribution to the "before publication" process would make a valuable difference to this book.

Author has potential, but the story could use some improvements

The author has a lovely writing style and all the main characters are sweet and perfect. To improve the story, the main characters need some more character flaws. I wanted to know more about the hero besides knowing he was nice, meek, handsome, the perfect father and attracted to the heroine. Maybe he could act shy or stutter or be addicted to cherry tarts, trip often or have some other flaws to make him real. Maybe Amelia objected to society's rules, liked to cook, but was terrible at it. There were some minor research errors like the handsome Regent, who was actually quite fat and a flirt (but not in this story) and a few strange words not used at the time (for example, wow could become my goodness or amazing). The author can learn this type of thing with a little time and practice. The story was ok and the plot was basically good over evil.

INCREDIBLY AMAZING!!!
OMG! Man, talk about hitting all the right places. Henrietta totally nailed all the emotions running through me unchecked. I fell in love with this little gem. One fantastic storyline and strong plot bring this read roaring to life spectacularly. The sincerity and passion encased in this heartwarming, pulse racing, heart pounding, rollercoaster ride full of promise and heartache that can either keep you standing strong or bring you to your knees. The chemistry and intense feelings the two main characters share is soul deep and palpable. Twists and twinned, pulled through a shredder backwards builds walls that only true love can crumble. Henrietta out did herself with this precious little jewel. Remarkable job Henrietta, thanks for sharing this little treasure with us.

Yes a bit melodramatic but if you ever find a Duke like this, grab him with both hands and never ever let him go! A young woman who was raised in India by her father who is in service to the crown of England and her mother who remarried after the death of her husband while in India returns to England where a Duke will be her guardian as she takes the roll of Countess as both of her Uncles and her father are deceased. Unbeknownst to Amelia her mother has betrothed her to a man who sleeps around and has run thru his own inheiritance by gambling and whoring. The Guardian and the new Countess begin to have feelings for each other and the "betrothed" keeps trying to seduce /threaten her. I love a good story with plenty of suspense and passion . This book went a bit overboard on the mellow drama but all in all I loved the story!

Lovely book and engaging characters

This was an engaging read and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's about Amelia who lives in India but through family losses becomes a Countess. She comes back to England with her maid and friend Tanvi. Amelia finds out that she is to be appointed a guardian who is Alexander and also her mother told her she is also to be married to a despicable buffoon Ambrose. That's the premise of the story and I don't want to give any spoilers away so I will just tell you to go and read it for yourself. This in my opinion this is one of her best books I have read so far by Mrs. Harding. Just go read it to judge for yourself. Also download the extended epilogue.

I thought the writing gave strength to this novel and kept you interested in not putting the book down. It showed the strength of a 20 year old young woman to a determined woman who was put to the challenge of running a large estate and it's surroundings. She had the strength and lacked the knowledge of running this estate but with determination and drive she succeeded.
She was kind, generous, very observant, caring and loving without showing any partiality to the class of a person.
Amelia treated Tanvi like a sister rather than a servant and loved her the same way.
The romance between Alexander and her was a great addition to the story.
I highly recommend this novel for those who love the Regency period.

Caribou stew? in 19th century Nottinghamshire????

Two stars. One was extra for the sheer nerve of writing it. Where was the research for goodness sake?
Firstly the year is 1817. Queen Victoria was born in 1819 yet the house was 'Victorian' Style?
Secondly, caribou stew? Caribou is an American term. Polite society definitely did not eat this. Several courses were served.
Thirdly, where on earth does the author get the idea of a countless digging, mining, clearing drainage ditches? There has to be some sense of authenticity in a book and this beggars belief. I realise she is trying to show what an all round wonderful human being her character is but my goodness!
I am afraid I skipped HUGE chunks.

Rubbish and a waste of time.

Luckily this was a free book as it was badly edited and the author knew very little regarding the morals and the customs of the Regency period.
You cannot have Victorian buildings before Victoria came to the throne. You do not address the Prince Regent as your Majesty! He was His Highness!
These are, to name, but a few editing mistakes. As for the historical inaccuracies… No male, not even a guardian would have been admitted into an unmarried damsel’s bedchamber, let alone invited in by her. Also too many Americanisms for my liking. “Revolver” instead of fire arm or dueling pistol. No Englishman or woman of the time would have said “shut up” ! It would have been “Oh, do be quiet!”…

Wonderful and charming love story

Thoroughly entertaining. Henrietta Harding has given us a wonderfully romantic tale of love. As Amelia Wright assumes guardianship of the Southwell estates, properties and territories as the Countess of Southwell, the Duke of Nottinghamshire, Alexander Wentworth assumes guardianship of her. Though fifteen years apart in age they are drawn together by the immediate attraction they feel for one another. However, deceit, treachery and law conspire against them from ever making a love match. Follow along as Amelia and Alexander fight for their love and triumph over all obstacles in their way.

I received this book as an ARC copy from the author and I am voluntarily leaving my review.
I absolutely loved this book! It's an exciting, action-packed story with well-described, engaging and endearing characters. Lots of unexpected twists and turns in the story, yet it's still a sweet tale of romance and true love with a very happy ending. It was a pleasure to read and I couldn't put it down. My only criticism would be about having to go online at the end of the book to read the extended epilogue. It would be so much easier to simply include it at the end of the book, after the epilogue.

An Interesting Story

I liked reading this book. The details of the story are very interesting. I really enjoyed learning something about life in British Colonial India.
The characters are well-drawn and engaging. The plot is better than the usual historical romance, making this rather wordy story likable. Unfortunately, my copy of this book had a multitude of grammatical errors, which took some of the enjoyment away.
I voluntarily read an Advance Reader Copy of this book and can recommend it to you with some reservations.

Great story

When Amelia suddenly becomes a Countess and has to leave India for England the last thing she expected was to fall in love. However that is exactly what happened. To make matters worse, it is her guardian who has drawn such feelings from her, and he feels the same for her. However, due to his legal guardianship over her, they can not be together.

Can love win out over the rules of guardianship and English tradition, or is their love doomed to never be acknowledged?

Sweet Countess

5stars for this gorgeous book so fitting that the characters were so enlightened humorous sweet fantastic spicy saucy storyline come alive just refreshing exciting. I
thank you for this BEAUTIFUL written book. Great to be able to read a book thats not so violently perused with swearing etc and making the female characters so nasty hasty
and just not nice. I love the way you write. Your writing makes all the characters as if
they are all equal ....regardless of gender or identity. YES, I can't wait to see the next series of books.

A world away

Finding her way from India to become a Countess in England creates growth for Amelia to mature.
A great tale of the issues that even today happen with parents who move from one country to another for work and service to country and how their children learn to adapt.
The fact that a mother would scheme against a daughter is another part of the story that creates more mystery.

Loved the story of Amelia and Alexander and the love they come to feel for each other. Because he is her guardian, he has got to find a way to be relieved of his guardianship in order to marry her. Along the way obstacles are placed in front of them and they have to maneuver around them. There is a lot happening in the book and it is a good read. I would highly recommend this book.

Wonderful story line! Different than the usual historical romance novels. The heroine , became a Countess, by blood lines, and she was born and raised in Madras, and grew up with Indian traditions
And a Duke became her guardian,
It was love at first sight, although it
took them a few chapters too get there. thank you ❤️
