All Tanner Ross wants out of the rest of his high school experience is to fade into the background. However, his crush on his teammate and best friend, Brady Longacre is getting out of control and taking over his life. He relies on the crush to keep him going, but he’s in constant fear of being exposed. His conservative Christian parents and baseball coach are making it more difficult for him to remain silent, as well. Life begins to spiral out of control as Tanner’s childhood friend, Allie, correctly guesses his feelings for Brady. Only with good intentions, Allie complicates Tanner’s life even further, trying to ease the pain that Tanner’s crush causes him. Everything comes to a head one Friday, as Brady is pitching the game of his life and Tanner is thrust into the spotlight.
This is a tale of mostly unrequited romance of a high school sophomore for a fellow teammate on the high school baseball team. Anyone age 14 or above can read this, whether they personally have such urges or not. The teenagers in this book, whether straight, gay, or not too sure, wonder how to embark on life's wonderful yet dangerous endeavours. This is done realistically yet tastefully, albeit with earthy language.
First, I almost stopped reading this but I'm glad I did finish it. The first third of the story seemed to go very slow for me. I'm not a sports person but that stuff didn't bother me, I had a hard time wanting to get involved with the characters. It wasn't that I didn't like them I just couldn't connect to them enough to care either way.
On the whole, the book is good. I enjoy baseball. I found it to be a smooth read. I understand crushes and wanting. As someone who grew up in a Christian family and a Christian faith, I found the writers disrespect for the bible and disrespectful for a persons faith unsettling.
I enjoyed this book immensely because it actually made me relate to a character. usually stories like these have totally unrelatable people and ridiculous plots. I've felt like Tanner at times and was drawn to him. finally someone like me in a story who isn't focused on just sex. Looking forward to what the author has in store for us next!
