“The Hidden One (The Chosen One #2)” continues the love and fears of Ainsley and Maya, picking up three years after book #1.

First, I’ll get the obvious out of the way: Lori Prince reminds us why she’s one of the best narrators on Audible! What a wonderful listening experience!! To be fair, though, her work was certainly made easier by the terrific book that Markinson wrote for us!

Desperate to protect MC Maya from public scrutiny (read book #1 for that story!), MC Ainsley has removed herself from the Carmichael’s goal of grooming her to be elected President one day. Maya, though, is more concerned that Ainsley follow a path she wants, rather than deny herself important goals as a price to pay for loving Maya.

Aaannnd….cue the music for machinations. Lots of machinations by lots of people. Everybody, it seems, wants to have a hand in forcing a future for Ainsley and Maya.

Returning characters Fiona (Fee) and Pat are terrific, and the dog Grover gets a much larger role, as you might have guessed from the cover art.

Arch-nemesis Susie returns, more arch-nemesisy than ever! Despite Ainsley’s brother Ham having taken over family power in the last book, grandmother has not exactly retired to a rocking chair. Their sister Kylie has some interesting news too! And oh, yes, there are yet more interesting things to learn of Maya’s past, despite Maya’s desire to let the past stay in the past.

While the mock campaign provides the basic storyline for the book, the most interesting parts involve the people and behind-the-scenes activities….sort of like real life!

Even my politically liberal self did roll my eyes at some of the over-the-top depictions of Democrats being loving and fair-minded, while Republicans are openly misogynistic. Well, ok, the bit about the Republicans was rather accurate.

I can’t say much more without a spoiler tag, so let me conclude by saying this is a terrific addition to The Chosen One series, and I hope there will be a book #3! 4.8* for “The Hidden One”.

I thought I’d end my review as the author ended her book, with a great quote from Ainsley:

”Life is often hard and unfair. People can be cruel. Sometimes, it’s hard to get out of bed.”

“But life is also beautiful. People can be kind, supportive, and loving. No matter how hard I try, it’s hard to stop smiling when I think of all the people who have been there for me during the worst of times.”

We all occasionally are confronted with the worst of times. May we all also have people who will be there for us, and may we all be there for our friends when they need us.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

My rating and my review was not in anyway affected by my having been provided a review copy.

Even more than the stories, which pull you all the way in, I think what I like best about Markinson’s books is her ability to craft characters. Whether they’re MCs or supporting characters, she manages to make most of them complex, both strong and vulnerable, cynical yet willing to trust. I’m looking forward to reading more about Ainsley, Maya and the whole Carmichael family.

The sequel to The Chosen One starts three years after the first ends. I recommend reading the books in order. Now, Ainsley and Maya are in a steady relationship. Ainsley is struggling with her ambitions for a political career, she isn’t sure anymore, if becoming president of the United States is, what she wants to be. Because of Maya’s past, they try to stay more off the radar. But there are others who want to change that.

For a mock presidential election, a mandatory class project, unintentionally she’s put back in the spotlight as the democratic candidate. And her worst enemy Susie-the-big-time-bitch is on the Republican team and makes her life hell.

The storyline is well developed and the pace is good. The political plot is realistic, even it’s just a school project. I loved Ainsley and Maya as a couple, especially Maya is sneaking into my heart. The chemistry is there and you can feel their love for each other. What I liked very much was Ainsley’s desire to play the political game fair, despite all the hate and embarrassing stuff which was thrown at her. She has her heart in the right place, but sometimes she acted a little naïve.

The author did a great job not only on the plot but also in the development of the protagonists. Several of them are growing during the story and are bringing depth to the story.

Recommended to everybody who loves a nice romance and some political intrigues.

Mock election.

This is the sequel to The Chosen One written by T.B. Markinson and I think I enjoyed this book more. In The Chosen One, Ainsley was completely infatuated with Maya. It's Maya, Maya, Maya, and in an annoying way. In this book, that part is toned down. Ainsley and Maya have been dating for three years now and are still very much in love but it's at a healthy level and the relationship is sweet.

Ainsley's attention is focused on a mock election that she takes part in as part of her senior year project. And as somebody not from the United States, I found the extent of the mock election and the feud between political dynasties entirely bizarre, even if the social issues being raised sound valid.

I like Lori Prince as a narrator but she uses a particular voice to narrate this series that I think suits Ainsley's character but it also makes her whiny.

This audiobook was given to me for free at my request and I am voluntarily leaving my review.

This one took me a while to get through.

I paused and listened to more than one other book, and some podcasts in between as it just wasn’t really grabbing my attention in the beginning. I think my problem was as much as I liked the characters (Ainsley, Fiona, and Maya, mostly) and as much as in theory I like political stuff like this… this particular one just didn’t do it for me. Maybe it was all the mentions of trump era politics (when this was written so, fair) but I just didn’t want to hear about it all over again. And, though I also believe and support pretty much everything Ainsley stood for in her political views and speeches, I felt myself rolling my eyes and getting annoyed with how many “speech” sections she gave. Like… yes, she was running for fake office in a mock election, she had to give speeches, lol I know this, but half the time they were just her talking to another character outside of that and it just had me tuning out, a bit.

I did really like the continuation of her relationship with Maya, getting to see them three years into their relationship was wonderful, and I wish we got more established relationships or series that stick with couples in sapphic fiction overall, because It’s a nice change of pace.

Overall I did enjoy this once it picked up a bit more, but it felt like there were some things left unresolved a bit, with character stuff near the end. I wonder if this is planned to have more in it as a series? I’d def check another one out, because I do really like and care about these characters. Lori Prince is wonderful narrating, as always. Her Ainsley voice isn’t my fav her her repertoire, but it fits the character and it’s not as grating (for me) as like, the one she gives Corey in the gallows humor series, or anything.

TB Markinson is one of my favorite Sapphic authors, I don’t think she’s written an bad book yet, and this one is no exception. Great characters, brilliant dialogue and multilayered story. I feel like there’s still more to this story, maybe a sequel?

Wow

My head is still spinning on the details of what just happened. This book is cathartic for these political times though and I wish Ainsley was real and able to help fix this mess.

Trouble continues

Susie has an all out war going on with Ainsley and Maya. Together they triumph through everything thrown their way. The chemistry is still strong. Their love is shown through their actions. T.B. Markinson creates strong woman with a past that they will overcome. Her character development is exceptional. I wish there was more to this series.

I’m not one to pursue novels immersed in politics, but Markinson had me hooked on the line and reeled me in. Her in-depth knowledge of the machinations of politics, from family dynasties to College campuses give a vivid picture of the life of Ainsley Carmichael. This is the sequel to The Chosen One, which I decided I needed to re-read first before deep diving into The Hidden One. There is so much more within this second book that will stir you…whether it be your passion for politics, longing for equality, a desire to live your life your own way, to rid society of bullies and those who oppress others for their own pleasure…Markinson will not just entertain you with a cast of colorful characters, witty dialogue and tidbits of history, but also with a story of love filled with hope. I’m hoping that there will be another episode of “One” in the future, because I’m not ready to let go of Ainsley and Maya, or Fiona just yet.

This book was superbly written by the author. I will be the first to admit that I hate politics but I do have a love and passion for history. I loved the storyline and the main characters are adorable, especially Ainsley. I hated Susie but all the other characters I liked. This author just goes from strength to strength. My favourite book by this author used to be A Woman Lost but this series kicks that one out the water by a mile. I would definitely recommend reading this even if you are not a fan of politics.

I look forward to reading more of this authors work in the future.

Another winner by T. B. This sequel is probably even better than the first book, though I do recommend reading The Chosen One before moving on to this one. Don’t let the subject matter put you off, I’m not the slightest bit interested in politics, UK and particularly not US, but I still found this book intriguing and thoroughly enjoyable. Roll on book 3.

Ainsley definitely has my vote!!!

Ainsley is trying to keep a low profile in her senior year but being at the centre of mock presidential debate class project is making it almost impossible to keep away from the politics. It is all in an effort to keep her and Maya’s privacy. In order to do this, and keep her rival from raking up the past and causing hell, Ainsley is using everything she has to protect Maya and avoid any unnecessary drama, but most importantly to make sure that no devastation comes as a result of secrets being revealed.

I loved this and The Hidden One was just the sequel I expect for The Chosen One, but as usual it was filled with drama and surprises, making it so much more than I imagined. It is such a clever story, giving good insight to the world of politics (even if it is just a mock debate project!) and made for such an exciting story. I really felt like we were joining Ainsley in the race to be President of the USA, her family’s chosen path for her, and no matter how hard she tries to veer from the path, you can just tell it is in her blood! She has a real natural way about her that fits that type of future well. I know if I had to vote for a President and Ainsley was in the running she’d get my vote. She is just so down to earth, truthful, honest and genuine.

T.B. creates fantastic characters in Ainsley and Maya. This is only added to by the characters surrounding the pair, from Ainsley’s family members, to her friends and project team. Each one was unique and bursting with a real personality that just shone. I already adored Ainsley and Maya from The Chosen One, but I love them all that much more now. They just have this brilliant connection, despite everything that threatens them and no matter what they are there for one another. It is just a lovely relationship, and their supporting of each other is amazing.

Another great read from T.B. Markinson and I hope there will be more from Ainsley and Maya in future because their future promises to be exciting, always! I can’t recommend this story enough, and if you haven’t read The Chosen One you would benefit from doing so before reading The Hidden One but it could be read standalone too. A fantastic read!!!

I was really excited to start The Hidden One by T.B. Markinson. It is the second book in The Chosen One series, and I would recommend reading the first book to fully understand what is happening. The book follows the life of Ainsley during her senior year of college as her class does a mock election.

I really enjoyed the second installment to The Chosen One series. The first book left off at the end of Ainsley’s Freshman year of college and The Hidden One picks up at the beginning of Ainsley's Senior year and her final project the mock election. I really enjoy the political aspect of this book. I feel like it plays a much bigger role than the first. Suzy is back to her evil ways trying to ruin Ainsley’s live any way she can, and the mock election opens up the ways that Suzy tries to sabotage Ainsley political ambitions.

Maya and Ainsley have been dating for three years. Their relationship is much steamier than the first book. You’re going to need a fan to cool down from their sex scenes.

All of my favorite characters from the first book have come back including Grover who makes a special appearance in Ainsley’s Presidential campaign. Maya’s backstory is even further explained, and it is mind-blowing.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves political romances and new adult romances.

Political Romance

Ms Markinson has done it again. The Chosen One series is a wonderful look into the political dreams of Ainsley Carmichael. Her relationship with Maya Chandler is an example of relationship goals. I cannot wait for the continuation of this series.

After listening to an audio of the first book in this series, I got to listen to this one, which meets our characters 3 years later. Ainsley and Maya have been dating for three years and are seniors, and the effect of Ainsley's senior project is the big action piece of this novel. Ainsley is living with Fiona, Pat and their dog Grover. Meanwhile, Suzie Q is still out there fulfilling her life's mission of making Ainsley's life hard.

I almost didn't listen to this one, but I had to remind myself about what I liked in the first one. I liked the side characters. Give me Fi and Pat. As much as I dislike the Southie accent, narrator Lori Prince brings it to life so well and makes Pat someone fleshed out. I want more of him.

As a character, Ainsley started to get on my nerves. I think she was accurately written in some respects. She's freshly 21 in this story, and her brain is practically all sex all the time. She can be a bit of a whiner, too. The "I'm so adorable because I'm clumsy" act was also something I didn't enjoy, but at least it was only used once in this book.

So all that out of the way, this book was interesting enough that the longer length didn't bother. I just wanted to know what was happening and to unpack the layers of political machinations. A new loveable side character was introduced in Hildy, Ainsley's mock campaign manager. The character chemistry was so good I thought something more might happen between her and Fi.

Prince's performance was as good as ever. I sometimes think the reason I wanted to slap Ainsley was because of the whining tone she used as the character's literal voice. That doesn't mean high-pitched. Ainsley just sounds often like she's complaining.

This is a good read/listen for those who like mysteries (political or not) where there are layers of duplicity involved, readers of lesfic who like stories that aren't all about the coming out (Ainsley was never "in"), or people who read the first book and enjoyed it. I do not recommend starting with this book, though. Go back to the first one (The Chosen One).

Expect a 3rd book in the series since the author is clearly not done with these characters.

This book is the sequel to The Chosen One. Shows the deep knowledge of Markinson about politics and we can see how far people are willing to go to win an election.... even a fake one. A very intense and intriguing story about politics and how dirty can be. Even if it's only a school project, which became more serious and close to reality than anyone expected or wanted and a romance in the middle of it all.

The story is about Ainsley Carmichael who wants to keep a low profile and not follow the family steps. That comes to an end when a mandatory class project pulls her back into the political world when she is chosen in a mock election as the Democratic presidential candidate; it's only a matter of time before her rival turns the spotlight on her and her guarded girlfriend.

Got me on my toes all the time; knowing something else would come, it would get real, but also knowing it will be completely unexpected, dreading as long with Ainsley and Maya for the other shoe to drop. There was only one thing I was sure would happen sooner or later, but that didn't prepare me for how things developed.

Markinson did an extraordinary job going through the intrigue and fallouts of the politics and secrets going around the Carmichaels. And I surely hope there's a sequel to this one.

I enjoyed reading the book and didn’t want to stop until I finished, couldn’t wait to see what happened. Ainsley and Maya are great characters as well as they make a fabulous couple. There are so many good strong characters around a well written story, so if you want some good intrigue, suspense, a thrilling story and romance. Even if politics isn’t your thing, you’ll enjoy it.

Very well written, but set in a world that’s hard to take

The writing - sentence structure, word use, etc. - is very good, as is the copy editing. And the narrator is a lively and interesting character, as are the people in her social circle, especially her girlfriend, who is lovely inside and out.

But the world the narrator describes - the world of wealth and a deep, lifelong involvement of her extended family in politics - is repugnant, even repulsive at times. From a manipulative, domineering grandmother to a vicious, vindictive class mate, from power-grabbing behavior to public phoniness to betrayal, this is a world I don’t want to be a part of, either in real life or in fiction.

I admire the narrator/protagonist’s good intentions, and I’m totally on board with her politics, but I’m baffled as to how a good person could stay involved in that world, no matter how altruistic her purpose.

The nastiness does ameliorate as the story draws to a close; even the mean grandmother turns out to be not so bad. But for most of the book I was wanting to be somewhere else, and wondering why the narrator/protagonist could continue to chose to live in such a despicable world.

The Hidden One is Maya, the gf of the MC Ainsley, the scion of a political family who's been groomed her whole life to run for office and eventually become President. This is a sequel to Ainsley and Maya's love story and focuses on Ainsley's selection as a presidential candidate in a mock election at her University. The campaign manager for her opponent is a lifelong enemy, a member of a political opposition family. Ainsley hadn't wanted to be the candidate. In fact, she's no longer convinced she wants to run for office. Such a public life could endanger Maya who's living with a number of secrets that cannot be exposed.

This is a long book with lots of plates spinning: Ainsley's and Maya's relationship, the campaign, love relationships of Ainsley's cousin and Ainsley's younger sister, and all of the intrigue about Maya. Still, it dragged at points until about the last 1/3 when it all came together.

Fantastic

This sequel to "The Chosen One" picks up three years later, with Ainsley and Maya's relationship going strong, but Ainsley having problems with nightmares about Maya's past catching up to them because of her lifestyle. Then she is assigned to be the Presidential Candidate for a mock election project at college, against her wishes, and all hell threatens to break loose. The characters are fantastic, going far beyond just the protagonists, with significant character development for several of the supporting characters as well. The plot and pacing are superb. The political intrigue and is well wrought and the characters appreciation for history is always a plus. Highly recommended!

Stunning

Beautifully written novel of love, family and the slimy side of politics. I loved the reference to the “Cheeto head”. It was spot on. Ainsley’s character’s strength was her passion for making the world a better, more equal, and humane place. Regardless of her stumbling blocks, she persevered. The characters were well developed and relatable. I would love to meet Pat. It is my sincere hope that there will be another book in this series to watch Ainsley become the first President of the United States. I enthusiastically recommend this novel. Thank you. Peace

Another new hit from the author.

Continuing on from the first book the author has created a sequel that supports the first book "The Chosen One with a surprising end. Or is it? The characters of the story are assaulted by a person who cannot have what she wants and tried to destroy others in a jealous rage. But justice prevails, thank goodness. The author also brings to light the injustice revenge porn can create and the hardships of the victims and hopefully individual states will impose laws to stop it with a heavy fine or imprisonment! Enjoy!

The wait was worth it.

Having read the first book The Chosen One awhile ago. Finally the 2nd one came out and what a blast it was to read. This was Ainsley and Maya story but her team and family helped as well. Again there is intrigue, dirty tricks politics, love and much more. Well worth the wait but hopefully not such a long wait for the next book to come out (Hint hint).
T.B.Parkinson the author did a brilliant job writing this and now the wait behind for the next.

A great series

I just finished the “The Hidden One”, the second book in this series. Maya and Ainsley are in their senior year at university in Boston. They have been together 3 years now and are very much in love. As a senior project, a mock Presidential election is held and Ainsley is one candidate. The story is about their struggle during the exercise with Ainsley’s enemy Susie and her Internet gossip site. Read the book “The Chosen One” first and enjoy the world of wealthy families political ambition for the next generation.

I am fully invested in reading more Ainsley and Maya adventures. Please continue with Book 3 and who wins Gingas Project election, does Ainsley pursue politics, i.e. running for office. Do they get married? Does Vicky come back to Ky? Do Fi and Pat marry?

I tried reading A Woman Lost. It was hard getting through the first book. I tried to read the second book but was completely bored by the end of chaper 2 so I deleted the whole series. Most of your book have been really great reads and you are by far one of my most favorite authors.
