It is no secret that I LOVED this author's Loan Shark duet, so when I read the synopsis for this book, I was ALL over it. It should have been a slam dunk for me. Unfortunately, I struggled all the way through. Not that it was a badly written book. It wasn't. This author is a fantastic writer. I love that the book was set in South Africa. I thought it had an original plot. I adored Lina. It was relatively low angst, but there was a lot of OW and OM drama (both of them lusting after the hero). There was even a pretty good twist. All good things...

— Damian's punishment for Lina, he used a paddle, whip, and cane to dole out punishments/lessons when she stood her ground, and he says this a lot: "I won't hurt you if you don't deserve it." He whipped her one time until she passed out; she wouldn't give him the answer he wanted, so he didn't stop the punishment until her body gave up. This whipping left her with welts, bruises, and a whole lot of body pain. The breaking point in these lessons was when he punished her using a cane until her skin broke. This is the most extreme he doled out, and he only stopped because she bled out. This made it hard for Lina to walk without the aid of a wall; she was literally dragging her feet to move. 😤 These punishments only stopped around 70% of the book (I think), so the heroine is beaten almost half of the story. 😑
— How much Damian hates that Lina gave her virginity to someone; he told her that she should've waited for him. Gosh, the audacity of this guy! He's a manhoe before meeting her, and six years later, he's annoyed that she gave her v-card to someone. He didn't know that she was married off to her abusive husband so that her asshole father would get mining rights. The man was old enough to be Lina's father, yet she agreed because her father told her so; she was married at eighteen.
— The horror that Lina went through for the last five years she was married. 💔
— Zane (OMD). He's Damian's friend in prison, and he took him to be his butler when they both got out. And this asshat is in love with Damian. Zane hates Lina with every fiber of his being. He physically assaulted Lina on numerous occasions; he backhanded (so hard that her lip split), choked, pushed, and gave her bruises. 😡 He has never shied away from telling her how much he wants her out of Damian's life. Of course, Damian didn't know about any of these attacks. Lina never told him, and Zane always manipulates the narrative making Lina looks bad. Damian didn't believe Lina at first, mainly because of her reputation and her history in an institution. But when he saw it for himself, he can't stop feeling guilty for letting these things happened under his roof.
— Anne (OWD). Zane's sister, who has been after Damian. She went to Damian's house, saying she had nowhere to go, and Lina, being the good person that she is, told her that she could stay with them. Anne tried to seduce Damian every chance she got; this fucking woman is relentless. But thank God, Damian has eyes only for Lina. He didn't kick her out immediately because he cares about Zane, so he's civil with Anne despite her constant flirting, even in front of Lina. 😤 He should've done something sooner, to be honest.
— Andries. Zane and Anne's grandfather—this family is freaking shameless. They're living in Damian's house, but all of them treated Lina like shit. This old troll almost killed Lina by spearing his rake into her heart just because she wanted to build an ecosystem for the endangered animals. He got away so easily that I would've wanted Damian to punish him, but then, a-fucking-gain, he has to consider Zane. 😤
— Harold. Lina's known father to her growing up. They're not really related because her mom cheated, and she's the result of that. But this prick didn't let her forget that fact. This is a vile fictional character, and I can't believe how a person can do the things he did in this story. He's a selfish prick and an even waste of space in a fictional world.
— The fact that Josh was stolen and Lina missed the first two years of his life. Harold, the asshole, made her believe that she lost the baby, and he didn't even tell her where he was "buried". 😭
— Lina was kidnapped twice in this book; this poor woman deserves a freaking break. 🤦♀️
— Lina's kindness and compassion—I know these are good traits in general, but because of them, she couldn't stay mad at Damian, even though he hurt her a lot. I really thought after the whipping she had, she would at least resist him; in reality, it would've been futile, but still, a little effort would at least show some self-preservation. She didn't resist and even had sex with him that night after he put ointments on the welts. 🤦♀️
— Lina. This woman is so resilient and strong. I can only imagine the things she went through, and for her to still fight for her life was so admirable. She struggled because of the traumas, but she tried to get past them, and these hardships in her life didn't make her lose her compassion. I'm just so proud of her. ❤️
— Damian's integrity. When he says something, he's going to follow through (even punishments 😑). He never lied to Lina, and that's something I liked about him.
— He took revenge on all those people who hurt Lina and made her life miserable.👏
— He stayed celibate for the last 6 years. Granted, he was in prison, but there are days when he could've chosen to sleep with the sex workers sent to the prison, but he didn't. After meeting Lina, he knew right then that she'd be it for him.
— That he's willing to let go of his revenge plan just to get back Lina.
— He listened to her and gave her space when she reconciled with her son. He gave her the freedom that she had been wanting ever since.
— That he puts her first all the time, even though the way he shows it is craptastic at best.
— When he realized he fucked up so badly after caning Lina, he burned all the tools he used to inflict pain. He vowed to do his punishment in other ways that would not hurt Lina that much.
❝Caring for a man who’ll never love me will be the worst betrayal my heart can muster.❞
