The Rift opens once again. The battle for Earth continues. Only the Eureka and her crew can turn the tides. The Eureka returns to Sol through the Rift as an extreme time dilation creates complications. With a familiar face now the Earth Fleet’s Grand Admiral, Ace and the others struggle to acclimate to their new reality. When one of the heroes is captured by the Watchers, the others plan a rescue that hinges on the success of the entire war. To end the thirty-year endeavor, the Fleet must align with a longstanding enemy, but knowing who to trust isn’t so simple. Join the crew of the Eureka as they fight to save Earth and its inhabitants in the epic third part of the Resistance series.
You know an author has done justice to a story when you reach the end of the series and know you will never hear from the characters again, and feel a sense of loss. Nathan Hystad does a superb job of character development that you need to remind yourself they are fictional characters. I love that the story ended the way it did and that the door (Rift) perhaps remains open for a book four? I hope so!
Plot plodded along, with the expected outcome and all lived happily ever after. Again, the plot was so thin, we could see through it. And, seriously, I kept skipping pages that could have been slimmed down. I guess the author was kinda like IBM developers, getting paid per line of code or words in a book.

I think this was the most exciting book of the series. There’s a lot of action and a lot of things get completed in a good way. That’s not necessarily a spoiler, it’s just that thing happen to work out even though the didn’t appear to be going that way. Strangely enough our main characters, Flint Lancaster, Dr. Wren Sando, and Charles all get left out of the major battle for Earth, but they do get in their final licks!
Now that the Eureka is back in the Sol System, they have a lot of catching up to do. It has been thirty years for the humans on this side of the Rift while only about a year has passed for those aboard the Eureka. They find Serina, yeah, the same cadet Serina that Ace had a crush on before he dived through the Rift, now known as Grand Admiral Serina. She is leading the Earth Fleet as did her month twenty years before. Right now, it’s a desperate stalemate between the Earth Fleet and the Invaders (Watchers). While the Invaders have gained footholds on Mercury, Jupiter’s moons, Europa, and Saturn’s Titan, they haven’t directly attacked Earth. Neither has the Earth Fleet been able to amass enough forces to dislodge the Invaders from their holdings. Lots of Earth Fleet personnel have died over the past thirty years yet here was Ace, now returned looking only a year older. Grand Admiral Serina was just about worn out.
So, was the return of the Pilgrim and the Eureka enough to turn the tides of the war? Maybe, maybe not. Still, this did give the humans an added influx of vital starfighters and supplies. Benson was also back on the Eureka, in a prison cell where he should have stayed forever. Yet Wren and Charles went to visit with him and listened to him tell them they needed to contact the Shadow. This was the leader of a rebellious group of humans who violently disliked the Earth Fleet. Yet, they were still humans and Benson believed the time was right to ask them to join the fight. So a plan was formed to make contact with this Shadow organization and set up a meeting. It was vaguely known that the Shadow organization had a few hundred ships of varying capabilities, but anything would help now.
Admiral Serina and Dr. Sando went to met the leader of the Shadow organization. He/she was called the “Shadow” because no one had ever seen his/her face. Benson was certain the Shadow was a female since he had once engaged her organization for a job. Once the meeting started and the Shadow spoke, it was obvious that this was a male. Further, it will be an extreme shock to Grand Admiral Serina when the true identity of the Shadow is reveled.
Now with the forces of the Shadow and Earth Fleet combined, it was time to go on the attack. They believed they Invaders had gathered much of their fleet at Europa, so that’s where Grand Admiral Serina focused her attack. Only things didn’t go as planned. They found only a few of the Invaders in the vicinity of Europa and not many of the Shadow ships actually showed up. It appears that the Shadow organization has turned against Earth Fleet at the last moment. Grand Admiral Serina now realizes they were setup for defeat and the Invaders had gone to Earth while they were out at Europa. Can she get the Earth Fleet back to Earth quickly enough and even if she does, do they now have enough forces to win this fight. Without the Shadow assets, it looks pretty bleak for Earth.
As I mentioned, this book has a lot of action going on. Just when you though something was going to favor the Earth Fleet, something bad happens. As for Flint Lancaster, he’s gotten himself captured by the Invaders and is in a prison of sorts on Europa. Of course, Wren, Ace and Charles have vowed to rescue him even though that not what Grand Admiral Serina wants to allocate forces to do. Still, they know Flint would stop at nothing to rescue either one of them.
Great series, but this seems like the end. They do finally close things up with a visit back through the Rift to the colony planet. Councilman Jarden, now with his Wife and Son for over two years, gets to see his daughter again although she has aged some thirty years. Things are getting better on Earth, not perfect, but former Councilman Jarden thinks it’s time to go back home.
Nathan Hystad is one of my newest favorite authors. I've read every one of his Survivors Series and now The Resistance Series. If it weren't for the Sci-Fi in the book, you could easily see these events happening with today's political leaders. He's not critical, just realistic. Having mentioned the science, I have to say I love what he does. Some authors, especially new ones, make the mistake of trying to explain their Science Fiction. If they could do that, Hello, it wouldn't be fiction. Nathan doesn't make that mistake, instead, he just presents the capabilities in a manner that allows you to just accept they exist. For example, on one side of a "Rift", a kind of Portal in space, time passes at the normal rate. On the far side, for every thirty years that pass on the normal side, only one year passes on the other. This makes for some very interesting events as friends and family from both sides reacquaint to find their friend (or family member) has aged thirty years while they've only aged one year. The action is continuous but not exhausting. I've read some books where I felt I was beginning to breathe fast and my BP rising. The pace here is just right with enough time for you and the characters to evaluate what's happening. I wouldn't say this has a "Happily Ever After" ending but, it appears our remaining characters look forward to a time of peace, rebuilding, and exploration. I hope Nathan gives us an update on their progress and experiences before too long. It kind of feels like good friends have moved away.
I said I wasn't sure if I was going to read this 3rd book but I decided to go ahead and see what it would be about. I was hoping it would calm down on the 16-turned-17 year old kid saving the world against the aliens. The author didn't. This series did nothing for me for that reason. No kid that young would ever be that great flying ace. This was written for a young teenage boy, not an adult.
There was no romance and no swearing to speak of.
As for the narrators: Simply put; TERRIBLE. See my review in book 2. and, AGAIN, there should NEVER be a "full cast" narrating a book. It's the first time I listened to one of these books and the LAST time. You just can't have a male narrator do a man's voice then a few chapters later have a female do that same characters voice. It's too ridiculous. IMO
I was mostly glad to have the author/writer close most open ends after 3 books. I enjoyed the pace for the most part, and it was a quick read, so i enjoyed this more than the previous 2 books in the series. Here again, like the scifi of today, including movies, everything is left for the predictable next book, next movie, overall franchise, etc. You grow to expect the end is never The End. I respect those who tend to complete the circles in 1 to 2 books, or at least make the books stand alone reads, which can, or have option, to branch out characters into other stories, or directions, if need be, and/or start fresh. That to me is where i become more impressed. I enjoyed the book? Yes. Am i crazy about the writing style? No!
In this third installment of The Resistance series, the Eureka returns through the Rift to find the war between the Watchers/Invaders/Raiders has reached a stalemate. But things go sour fast as Flint Lancaster gets captured after the opening battle sequence.
The action is fast paced and easy to follow. And, with the time dilation of the Rift, 30 years has passed, which made for an interesting reunion between Ace and Serina. There were plenty of surprises along the way, and the final showdown for the fate of Earth had a good mix of tactics and deception.
The ending sequence was interesting, too. While the story was neatly wrapped up, it left the reader with the possibilities of adventures to come.
What a great ending! Nathan Hystad is a super story teller, his characters jump out of the pages and you route for them all the way. The story twists and. Turns keeping your interest until the very last page, so much so that you do not want to leave them, but stay and join them in their new futures! A must read if you live Sci-fi and a good story!
Great ending to the novel. I did find it odd that the alien vessel with stasis pods that apparently malfunctioned only contained bones of the species. Stasis indicates a sealed chamber, regardless of whether power is engaged, so wouldn't the remains be desiccated or preserved? Bones suggests insect activity, which I don't see possible in a stasis pod. Then again, I always get stuck on the little details.
I enjoyed this book series very much. I read at night and listen during the day when I walk. Not a big fan of having 7 different narrators each doing their own chapters. By the 2nd book I gotten used to it but still not a fan of doing it that way. But the story was amazing and kept me wanting more. Thank you!!
The author Nathan Hystad never disappoints. His style of writing is enjoyable without anything hard on your brain trying to understand what’s going on ! Truly this Trilogy was just pure fun and the story itself was right on. Much appreciation, Oded.
Well, this book really went through quickly! It's a great read, fast paced and includes the drama, action and mystery we love. If this is the end of this series then it's a wonderful end. Thoroughly enjoyable.
The problem I had with this whole series was just this... I have so many things to do with running a business and putting the reading down was almost too difficult...can we have another please.!!
I couldn't read fast enough to find out, how it all was going to end. But one has to do other things in life as well. But i have to say, that was a brilliant series. and i am glad to find the author. must check out more books of him.
Read and enjoy I did. If you read and enjoyed ace and flints adventures then you will enjoy. I won't say any more I keep wanting to say more but it would spoil the book. Read and enjoy
Every time I sat in my easy-chair I couldn't resist picking the book up to continue my reading. The ending was somewhat of a surprise leaving lots of unanswered questions. If you like science fiction at all, I'm sure that you were enjoy this book.
Very engrossing. One day read and worth it. Good basis for story. Good character development. Good ending. I'll miss the people to bad it was really an ending and not a lead in to another book.
This episode of the trilogy had its ups and downs, but all it was a very good story. Actually I am sorry that the series has ended. I'm sure that there are many good books on the Amazon library that will keep me engaged.
I'm sorry to finish this series. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Loved the characters and the different personalities., Along with the bravery. The series showed the war against the watchers was about tactics, not strength...
I truly enjoyed this book and hope maybe there might be more in the future. This author just continues to deliver with fast paced, action packed stories that leave you wanting more. Absolutely amazing.
Brief review for myself: Likable characters, a lot of action that isn't too dark or too anxiety producing (not that it's light reading!), good pacing, excellent storytelling, and a great way to divert the mind in difficult times.Regarding all three in the series.
The concluding part of the trilogy. Whilst enjoyable, I felt a little too much went unexplained. The final twist in the last few pages seemed like a pointless diversion in the plot with no real explanation or back story.
