Thank you to Netgalley for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I was excited to read this book purely based on the pedigree of the author - she has a lot of experience working with women's health. Unfortunately the majority of the books is about this experience and her accomplishments. It sets the reader up for some serious inadequacy issues. Every single page pays homage to what she has achieved as a business woman and a mother and wife, but doesn't actually share how she did it. It got sickening very quickly.

I'm not a woman of a certain age, but I am a mother and I'm experiencing hardcore burnout. I was hoping this learned individual would share advice to get my hectic life on a healthier path - using natural means to work out the kinks that come with the stress of parenthood and FT work (and lady problems... because they are inevitable). I got NO useful information from this. I would hope her patients get more assistance during their appointments. As far as I'm concerned, I am not doing nearly as much in a day as she does in a morning, and I should buy a horse and ride it to be more in touch with nature.

Bah!

Supportive ~ Thoughtful ~ Actionable

tl;dr: It's not you, its our society and our behaviours that make you so tired.

Dr. Jackson creates a strong how-to manual, basically, that outlines the reasons for the epidemic of exhaustion and offers a mutli-faceted approach to counteract these issues. Jackson's approach is clear and doable. Her text has moments of rendundancy, but that might be because she knows her audience. A reader who is burned out, like me, might be reading quickly, and she doesn't want people to miss key details. This book would be good for someone who needs concrete steps to deal with the physical and mental effects of burnout, and wants a book that is basically brass-tacks.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a must read for all women whether pre-menopause or perimenopause!
The book outlines the reasons for the epidemic of exhaustion and offers a multifaceted approach to counteract these issues. I found it easy to read, understand and appreciate but it is NOT information you will get from your doctor or Gynecologist. I am in the perimenopause stage (exhausted, mentally and physically) and wish I had read something like this years ago. As another reviewer states this book would be good for someone who needs concrete steps to deal with the physical and mental effects of burnout, and wants a book that is basically brass-tacks.

Nisha Jackson, PhD, is a woman's health doctor who specializes in hormone balance. She has made it her mission to help us be the best, most brilliant we can be. In Brilliant Burnout Dr. Jackson explains how the stresses of modern life and society, our need to do it all and be there for everyone, is causing us to put too much pressure on ourselves and is causing dire consequences to our health as a result. More and more women have walked through her clinic's doors feeling burned out, depressed and exhausted, all without knowing why. Dr. Jackson takes a whole body and lifestyle approach to the problem. She details in easy to understand language exactly what continued high levels of stress does to our bodies and offers solutions on how to address each issue.

I am so glad I read this book! I now know what sings to look out for in myself so I can take action before stress and exhaustion rule my life. Many of Dr. Jackson's ideas are easy to implement and she offers a guide on what conversations to have with your doctor to get the care you need along with advice on how to find a specialist if needed.

I won this book in a GoodReads giveaway. I guess I should have read more on the description or the author because it wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I appreciate the author sharing her knowledge to help women. However, I wasn't prepared to read that basically, we all need to get our hormone levels checked and fixed in order to fix the burnout crisis happening in women. The book is packed with information on how hormones impact your body and how you can fix them. However, I believe that most women will find it difficult to watch their hormone levels, fix their diets, workout 5x a week, get sleep, be intimate, and socialize.

Really an eye-opening and a must read for every female professional. Too many times females feel they are experiencing burnout and all they kept hearing is "just relax!." Sometimes, all the physical and mental problems associated with stress are actually caused by things like hormone imbalances, poor diet, incorrect exercise schedule. All of this can be changed! This book is really an eye opener and I already started following the advice in Ms. Jackson's book. Very happy I read this.

An eye-opening and in depth (read quite granular) medical look at the causes of burnout, and the recommended ways to counteract symptoms in order to get back to our optimal health. I found the book interesting, and very informational. I think that medical professionals and women with burn out could find it useful, however that being said I know most of the steps to better health and wellness directed and recommended hormone level testing.

While I think that can work for many, and is a different approach to be aware of, and discuss with ones doctor, I don't think it's necessarily as easy path to follow. I think depending on ones medical insurance (or lack thereof), that it could become cost prohibitive. Another factor that could be an issue for some is the amount of time and dedication this path will necessitate. I know without our health we have nothing, and its important to make it a high priority. It's good to increase our knowledge and our box of tools, I am just not sure this path would be accessible to all. While I am not a medical doctor, I think if they aren't able to pursue this wellness plan path changes in diet, adding yoga and meditation could be a start to help someone move on the right path to a better overall well being.

There are a lot of quizzes in the book that the reader can come back to later if they desire, it won't hinder the reader to just continue reading on through the book. The book follows of a pattern of providing examples of other Women's stories and journey's with stress, burnout, and the path they choose to better health. For those with busy schedules, you could read a chapter a week, or just go at your own pace. The diet advice in the book isn't necessarily a diet template for everyone. For example I wouldn't be able to follow that diet to a T. I'm a vegetarian so I am not eating the meat options listed, and I eat minimal dairy due to allergies. I get that its a basic outline, and the focus isn't on every single diet that exists, but is a template people can follow. It's important to discuss any diet and supplements with ones own health care providers, and adapt to meet their own needs.

The author knows we are all busy and doesn't expect the readers to have the time to actually read yet another book end to end. You can skip to the chapter that appeals to you most. I do have to mention that I was a bit surprised that the book turned into what felt like a book heavily focused on science, biology, hormones etc...and while being quite informative, it makes it a wee bit tougher to read for copious amounts of time.

We all hate being told by people in our lives to "just relax, don't stress", but that can often be easier said than done. Physical and mental problems associated with stress can actually caused by other underlying things such as hormone imbalances, poor diet, incorrect exercise schedule. All of which we can work on and changed. I am glad I had the opportunity to read this, and can refer back to it as I need.

In this book, a long-practicing nurse practitioner, who has an interest in optimizing health as women age, takes a look at female burnout. In the first part of the book, she details the history of her own burnout as well as her professional interests in helping women. The first chapter is about classic burnout, and it starts with a list of questions to see where you fall on the burnout scale. At the end of this first chapter, she gives a few simple ideas that you can implement right away, and she suggests that you start with the rest of the book by picking the topic that seems most relevant to you and your symptoms of burnout. After that, she suggests going through a chapter a week, allowing for those with busy schedules to slowly taking what she has to offer. Further chapters explore hormonal components of burnout and keys to successfully overcome burnout.

In general, I thought this book was full of good information about burnout and what to do about it. Given the way that she suggests the reader approach the book, the structure of the book seemed counterintuitive. She suggests we choose a chapter about what is most bothersome about the burnout we currently face, yet the chapters are not arranged that way, and you have to poke around to figure out what chapter would best suit your needs. She does have appendices of supplement suggestions, and she does own a supplement company. One of the things that she espouses throughout the text is a low-carb, low-glycemic, high-protein diet, which from my own studies I do not necessarily believe is the best diet and certainly not the best for everyone.

If you suffer from burnout, you might find the discussion and suggestions in this book helpful. Like all recommendations for diet and supplements, you should do further research and perhaps discuss it with your healthcare provider.

This book is probably best used as a guide for those who would like to communicate with their doctors about getting hormones checked and adjusted. It arms them with the terminology they need in order to ask for what they want or what their tests reveal they should have even if the doctor isn't suggesting such interventions. The above is the only reason this book gets three starts instead of two.

This book goes astray in several areas, however. The first is that the burnt-out woman reading this book will feel stressed just reading it. Each stress-inducing chapter about how you're out of whack is followed by a one-minute-miracle case study, handpicked as an example but the results of which seem simply to be unrealistic for most women because health and life don't often work like these examples.

Another area of trouble is lumping all women together--women who are hormonal birth control, for example, with those that aren't (all the quizzes ask whether your periods are irregular--they likely aren't if you're on the Pill, so these questions don't help those women). In the chapter about sex, the author doesn't delineate between orgasm alone and orgasm with a partner and if both are equal in their health-giving properties or if they hold different benefits. The whole chapter seems to assume that sex with a partner is readily available for all readers.

The part that may be most frustrating is the appendixes. I was curious to know what sort of supplements the author would suggest for various issues--and they're all proprietary formulas! Instead of offering a useful list of general adaptogens, herbs, vitamins, and minerals, the author seems to be selling products that aren't universally available.

Brilliant Burnout appeals to all of us women who are trying to juggle family, career, and self-care but are probably failing at at least one of those three things. I really liked that this book was more handbook than a work you needed to read cover to cover, beginning to end. I appreciated that in writing a book about burnout, Jackson doesn't expect her readers to have the time to actually read yet another book end to end. Instead, you are allowed to skip to the chapter that appeals to you most, and once you get there, you are met with a quiz to asses where you are in order to achieve things such as hormonal balance, stabilized moods, and brain brilliance. Jackson provides clear, actionable steps that are easy to follow and implement into your own life. I highly recommend this book to all of women who are out there trying to have it all, but are exhausted in the process.

I really enjoyed so many of the practical tips and the illustrations of so many of Jackson's clients turning their lives around. This gave me supplement ideas and a plan for experiencing burnout less.

However, some of her advice was very privileged and she did not acknowledge this. It takes money and time to access much of the medical help she suggested women be able to get and while she's right that this will make a huge difference to not just ignore symptoms but find help, what about for the women who this is literally impossible to access?

Additionally, some of this feels like a very one size fits all model that doesn't work for everyone. Jackson praises fasting and low carb diets as solutions, but for those of us who have experienced disordered eating and have worked hard to become intuitive eaters, diets like these can be more damaging than just eating the food.

This is a great step by step guide for any woman that feels worn out and run down. I knew I had some hormone issues, but after taking the quizzes in this book, I was able to determine I have pretty significant problems that need to be dealt with. Although I have an endocrinologist, just at Nisha says, my doctor just treats the symptoms with pharmaceuticals, which can actually make your issues worse. Nisha provides a step by step plan to help get to the root of the problems so that you can take control of your health.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway and was very excited to start reading it. It was very relatable and timely, given the level of burnout we're seeing in our society these days. However, it quickly turned into a more science/biology heavy book about hormones than I expected --which was very informative but made it a bit tougher to read for long amounts of time. Overall I liked the book and it's always nice to read something by a fellow Oregonian. It did leave me with a ton of questions about hormones and the impact of birth control and stress but I guess those are good questions to be considering... If you are looking to learn more about hormone regulation and the impact of stress I would definitely recommend this book.

I was an employee under Nisha. Please, for your health and safety, find someone else to treat you. She doesn't know how to run a medical business, currently called 'Onepeak Medical.' None are correctly run and designed not to. Your information isn't safe or protected under her clinics. She and those she hires in upper management do not understand business or ethics. I was horrified by her unethical and blatantly inappropriate behavior. Even if your provider is good, the system ensures they can't help you. Nisha doesn't care about anything other than getting your money - not matter the cost. Please go somewhere else. Find someone else... She's sick

This was a brilliant book. The author seems to know what she is talking about. The content is well researched and well presented by the author who is clearly passionate about the subject. I especially liked the bulleted points in each chapter where the information is condensed in a really actionable manner. My favorite section was the conclusion which was actually a chapter on happiness. Such good points!

When I first saw the title of the book and read the synopsis I thought - here is it, my guide to survival. Unfortunately, this is not quite what I expected it to be.

This book is great in explaining and bringing to the attention reason why we are physically and mentally burned out. It is not one or two specific reasons, it's a combination of stress, hormone imbalance, incorrect diet and exercise, and simple scheduling. An author takes time to explain each symptom and gives advice on how to deal with it.

After reading the book, I was convinced that the mind and body should be playing together as a team. It's important to listen and evaluate both, and once it is working together we reach the harmony we all so eager to have.

Good and easy read, many valuable points. Thank you, NetGalley and River Grove Books publisher for a free and advanced copy of the book.

Holy cow that was a struggle.

I received a copy of this via Goodreads Giveaways. Which makes me feel even worse for disliking this book so much, I had such high hopes.

In short the writing was meh, the author was obnoxious, the advice was okay... nothing ground breaking, there was the occasional good tip (buried in mind numbing pages of boredom and sad attempts at girl talk), the patient examples were all so predictable they felt fake. For a book on how to recognize, prevent and or treat burnout... I feel beyond a BURNOUT.

Great guide towards self-discovery for women to assess if they are, in fact, facing burnout. Jackson provides great resources to help you get back on track and repairing your adrenals - burnt out adrenals is a problem that so many women face yet never realize it. Doctors are so quick to tell you to get more sleep, eat a different diet, etc.. but they often fail to treat the underlying cause. Burnout can impact women at any age, any time. Great read overall, very informative.

I love the concept - but as so much of what this book presents is only relevant for her practice and people who can come into it, it's hard to say the whole thing is fully applicable. Some of the conclusions are reductive (just change it!) which is not helpful or encouraging for those struggling with more than behavior management needs. But altogether I enjoyed the read and it made me consider new avenues of wellness. So yay.

Jackson has many good ideas here, but she is quite repetitive. Her best chapters were those about the importance of relationships, positive thinking, and finding a "tribe."
