Fred Rogers: A Captivating Guide to the Man Behind Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood — Captivating History (Introduction + 22 titled chapters + References) Dec. 3-4, 2019
What a fascinating look at the Mr. Rogers from the Captivating History authors. I thought a knew a bit more about Mr. Rogers, but obviously I didn’t. This was a little longer read than I thought, but it was mostly descriptions and timeline of Fred’s life: aspirations as a youngster, spiritual upbringing and all the way through to the end. I did not know another book had been written about Mr. Rogers, but this book felt like more of a CliffNotes as it were (which is typical for Captivating History book, which seems to come on the scene of a subject that has gained recent resurgent.) The Mr. Roger’s biopic on the big screen is such an event invoke the resurgent.
The chapters read fast and the commentary by people involved hooked me into the timeline of his life and I found myself completely absorbed in the story.
Well written, quick bio of the man who influenced and a lot of little kid lives (me included!) We worth the read.
This is a nice book about a very gentle, very loving man who is known primarily for his Mister Roger's Neighborhood. The book goes into his history and discusses the various programs that he was involved with before the Neighborhood show. It notes that he actually studied music at first and that eventually led to the use of songs that he composed on his shows.
He wanted to help the mental and emotional growth of children and even with negative things he found a way to discuss or cover them in a way that would not terrify children. The book also briefly discusses some famous people that appeared on this program and covers how Mister Rogers dealt with the Kennedy assassination and topics like that.
There is no doubt that he was a very wonderful person and this book helps bring some of that to life.
A rather basic biography about Fred Rogers. There is no new information about the beloved television host.
I can not help but wonder if the publisher employed an editor to review this sloppy audio book before releasing it.
The glaring problem is that the narrator adds an extra "S" when referring to "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood". Yes, all throughout the book he reads ROGERS'S !!!! There's no excuse for this.
Additionally, the narrator flubs the word "cellist" by reading it as "SELL-ist", only to correctly pronounce the word minutes later.
Finally, an editor should have caught that the PBS cooking program featuring Julia Child is called "The French Chef" and not "The French Kitchen".
Don't bother with this audio book. It's nothing special.
Loved this book, Mr. Rogers. His values and comforting words guide me still 60+ years later. He explained a lot of bewildering things to children, the war, assignation of JFK and even divorce.
I found this to be an interesting and well written short story about the life of a man who was a pioneer in televised educational programming for children.
Although a condensed book, it is packed with a lot of facts about the life of Fred Rogers. It finds time to detail his childhood, his musical accomplishments in college and how it aided him in his future endeavors in the television industry, to his consummate interest in the media of television and his belief that children's programming could be done better.
Although Mr. Rogers Neighborhood aired during my youth, I rarely saw the show as it came on when I was doing work on our farm. It was interesting to read how the show got its start in Canada before ending up on PBS. The show tackled some tough issues such as divorce, death, and tragedies in the news such as assassinations, and it helped not only children, but also parents in dealing with their children's feelings.
He was a remarkable who accomplished much in his field and was certainly like no other.
