Our aim with this book is to guide a new student pastor through some important basics that will help lay the groundwork for a successful and sustainable ministry. The information will also be useful to the experienced yet “stuck” student pastors who want to tweak or completely change their ministry structure and goals. Our experience with “start up” student ministries and our relationships with other student pastors have taught us principles that we feel are worth sharing. Essentially, we want to share everything we wished we would have known in the beginning, and the things that have excelled and caused setbacks to our ministries.
Alan and Allison have written a great how-to book for youth ministry. This is an incredible resource for churches that are just starting to think about how to minister to the youth in their church or community but don’t know how to start. It’s also a great resource for a green youth minister who is just starting out. Heck, after 30 years as a minister I found things here that I will be using in my current post!
This should be required reading for all student pastors who are starting their first ministry. It's a clear, concise, straightforward overview of student ministry with insightful tidbits from the authors personal experience. There is nothing groundbreaking here but the authors have pulled together great information and presented it well. Kudos to them.
While the book covers many important topics it does so extremely quickly and without much detail. If you are completely new to youth ministry this book may be helpful or if you just want a book to briefly discuss with an adult leader team it could spark conversation. Yet, I do not believe this book delivers on helping you see how to create and sustain a thriving student ministry.
