Can a city girl on the run find safety in the arms of a rancher?

Chicago restaurant owner Sabrina Marconi needs to hide. And fast. She just sent a mob boss to prison. A competition to become the cook on a cattle ranch in Nebraska might just be the safe haven this city girl is looking for. With a new name, Laura Marshall, and a new life, everything is going according to plan. Until she meets the ranch owner.

Ranch owner Caleb Kirkpatrick is a single dad with too much on his plate. The latest ranch expansion means he needs someone to cook for his men. His brother's idea to have the cooks compete for the job might be the craziest thing he's ever heard. Until he meets Laura, who seems to be the most unlikely candidate to be a ranch cook.

When the competition among the women gets fierce, someone decides to play dirty, and Laura's cooking skills might not be enough. But if she doesn't get this job, she has nowhere to go. Not to mention the growing feelings she's having for her boss, feelings she tries to suppress.

The drama among the competing women is almost more than Caleb can handle. He's got his hands full with missing equipment and dead cattle. But Laura isn't like the others, and despite his best intentions, his feelings for her are growing. What is the secret she's hiding? Will she ever trust him enough to allow them to have a future together? And will her Chicago past chase her down in rural Nebraska?

Fans of Three Rivers Ranch Romance by Liz Isaacson, Come Sundown by Nora Roberts, Wind River Wrangler by Lindsay McKenna, and Not Quite Dating by Catherine Bybee will love this contemporary romance on the ranch.

This book was such a lovely read. It is not only about the story that warmed my heart but it was mainly all about the characters and their way of interacting with each other. Sabrina aka Laura is running away from the mob and takes refuge in a faraway ranch to land a job as a cook. She didn’t plan anything but fate has its means of proceeding because she is immediately attracted to her boss, a cowboy who has the responsibility of growing up a son all by himself. What she doesn’t realize is that Caleb is also attracted to her but it will take some time before both decide to yield and live their love out in the open. The story flows easily wiithout annoying the reader. I recommend it.

This book was warm right from the first chapter and continued to be an interesting story throughout. It's a real page turner.

The chemistry between Caleb and Laura aka Sabrina Marconi is undeniable from the beginning and only got stronger as they spent time together. Then the trip to the cattleman's conference in Casper, Wy. which sealed the deal on how Caleb felt about her. The one itty bitty disappointment was the first sexual encounter. It was a bit different than I am used to reading although it all worked out later.

Laura had a secret she knew she needed to tell Caleb before things could continue in the direction she felt their relationship was headed. The timing for that discussion came sooner than later when one of Caleb's past business partners was also at the conference and recognized Laura from her past in Chicago. Will it make a difference in how Caleb feels about her?

This book is full of mystery, suspense, secrets, and family love. I did feel like there were some mysterious happenings that were left unanswered in the book so I'm hoping there will be another book making this book one of a duology. I think there can be so much more to this story.
I will be looking for more books by Julia Daniels she is a wonderful author.

Reviewed at Lovin'A Cowboy Romance

I had a really good time with Saved by a Cowboy, and that’s the whole point. This is my first book by Julia Daniels and I’ll definitely be looking for more in the future. On the surface this story is about opposites – city girl, country boy. But in reality, it’s really much more. A bit of a mystery, a puzzle to put together adds another dimension to the story. From what we know when starting the story, Laura is somewhat on the run or at least on the way to a new life, a completely new life with a new name included. She’s made some powerful enemies, and while it seems that she’s safe now… well, you never can tell when you’ve angered a mob boss.

A competition at a ranch in Nebraska for the position of ranch cook seems the perfect place to hide out for a while. Who ever thought up a reality show like competition for the position of cook for this ranch was either stone cold drunk or a prankster in real life. And Laura’s “competition” is a bit – well, odd. But hey, everyone needs to make a living. She didn’t come here looking for romance, she came for safety, to escape her past but she just might have run to her future in this small community.

Caleb is an interesting character. One who runs hot then cold. He doesn’t trust easily, and learning his past we can understand why. But some times I wanted to simply shake the man and tell him to open his eyes and see the truth. But yelling at characters has never worked for me so he and Laura are left to sort out their trust issues with each other. We’ll meet a lot of interesting secondary characters, some with their own agendas, others bent on revenge and some who simply want to live a good life. It’s an intriguing combination of personalities that works very well.

As I mentioned, I had fun with this one. The story keeps you on your toes, and the attraction between Laura and Caleb is going from a slow burn to a blazing fire. I had fun going along on their journey with then and would recommend Saved by a Cowboy to any reader who loves Romance, Mystery and, of course, Cowboys. At the time of this review, this story is a stand alone… yet, I can see where it might turn into more. Time will tell, and I’ll be keeping an eye out for more from Julia Daniels.

I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.

Could be been so much better...

Who doesn't love a good cowboy story? That's what I was hoping for when I started reading this book, but straight away, I knew I'd have difficulty. Let me just say, I don't like giving low ratings for an authors hard work, but sometimes it has to be done.
The beginning is littered with mistakes (the little boys name is replaced with the father's at one point - both begin with C), the POV frequently changes throughout (sometimes switching in the middle of one, for a sentence), and the fierce battle for the job doesn't exist - it's a tame battle that lasts a couple of chapters. These were mainly personal annoyances and I persevered past them to finish the book. A book with a fantastic concept let down by what comes across as an early draft, rather than completed. If you take the skeleton of the story; its about a girl who goes to a ranch for a job and falls for her boss, who in turn gets an immediate hard on for her. The danger she's running from isn't an issue, the battle for the job hardly exists, and most of the good stuff is rushed over. The last few chapters are its saving grace and where the most happens.
All the reasons I downloaded this read were missing other than the cowboy.
I understand lots of people enjoyed reading this, and I did to an extent, but I was disappointed. The stars are for the concept and what could have been.

Laura had had to change her name and disappear due to fathers connection to the mob and having been taken out by them. Now she's competing for a cooks job on a ranch, it was different to owning and planning menu's for her own restaurant. The boss was like no man she had ever meet before, rugged but handsome. Celeb had let his brother talk him into holding a competition for the housekeepers job, all three women were good looking in their own way but one was stood out and pushed his body to react. Great story line that had me laughing as well worried with added twists and turn that will have turning the pages just to see how it all turns out Great read.

A fantastic page turner

This was my first book by Julia Daniels and I’m so glad I read this book. Sabrina, now going by Laura, arrives at Morning Glory Ranch to compete for the cook’s position. Caleb, the owner, is a single dad to his son Conner. The chemistry is apparent from the beginning, but Angel, another contestant, decides to speed things along. Does she succeed or will Caleb turn her advances down? No spoilers, so grab your copy and see what happens. Be prepared for some surprises, while reading.

Interesting story

There wasn't a whole lot of action or drama until the last couple chapters. Storyline and characters developed nicely, I prefer a little more drama in a story, this one had quite a few storylines going. I was thourghly impressed with Laura and how strong, independent, go getter, and smart.

I got an ARC of this book from TCK Publishing.

I am a complete sucker for cowboy romances, at this point it is something that everyone seems to know about me. I am also someone who watches cooking shows like most stereotypical guys watch sports. It is a big thing. So a book about a cooking competition and loving a cowboy? Yes please!

I really needed a short, fluffy, easy read. This book was exactly the sort of thing I needed in theory. There was low conflict, a quick pace, and generally wholesome romance. There were a lot of things that rubbed me the wrong way (the whole “maybe you aren’t JUST a cook” comments that happened a lot) and just the way that jealousy was handled. So many romance authors rely on jealousy as a sign of love, but jealousy is a sign of unhealthy insecurities. The last conflict that happened was over the top and just didn’t sit well with me. This was not the cowboy for me. He was too insecure to be interesting. Jealousy is not hot, it not romantic, it is not ok.

Daniels relies on the idea that sexual attraction makes a relationship. Just because someone is arousing doesn’t mean that they will make a good romantic partner. The connection the main couple had was pretty much always about lust and not about love. I wanted more love, especially since there was really only two sex scenes. The characters were too instalove and slut shaming to really be characters I could connect with. It felt really rushed. Marriages within a few days of meeting and stuff like that. The best part for me was the first sex scene. It is so rare that a male character is allowed to be vulnerable in that way. I really hate how it was blown off for a while and then just pushed away as a “well I am that attracted to you” instead of just being allowed to exist as it was and actually have some emotion. I hated how there were multiple talks about taking it slow and then within a few days of that it was about not taking birth control so there could be three or four kids. That is not slow.

The author also relies on stereotypes of Italian mobsters are the basis for the plot. The plot was never even really explored. It was just “well this happened” in the first few pages and very little else was exposed throughout the book. It was wrapped up so easily that it really wasn’t a plot, despite it being the main driving forced of one of the characters. Another plot that wasn’t fully explored was the drug abuse plot. It felt thrown in at the last minute.

I wanted to love this book, it had the right plot elements for me to easily overlook some huge issues and still love it, but it fell short. It read as a first draft instead of a full story. There needed to either be some plots removed or they needed to actually be fleshed out to really have a strong story. It was not the worst cowboy romance I read despite all of this. There was strong focus on condoms and there was even the word prophylactic in the sex scene which I was amused by. The mother character was wonderful. There were cute elements, but they were overshadowed by a plot that was just mishandled. I would give Daniels another shot to see if she has improved in her plot handling because I can see she has the ideas that would make for a strong romance, but just didn’t quite get them fully on paper in this one.

Love the idea of swaggering cowboys? Julia Daniel’s Saved by a Cowboy is the book for you! It’s got great characters, an interesting premise, and a straightforward plot.

Three very different women come to Nebraska to compete for the job of ranch cook. The women have vastly different motivations for pursuing the job. Only the main character, Laura, is fully developed and given a backstory.

I anticipated that Laura’s backstory would provide more story tension than it did. There was some untapped potential in that story line as the threat was stated but not fully explored. The other main character is Caleb; he is one of the ranch owners. His story is fairly complicated: he is a single dad, his ranch is bleeding money, and equipment and cattle are going missing. This all provided a little more story tension, and it did allow the reader to question whether or not the incidents are related to Laura or Caleb.

Saved by a Cowboy is told in dual POV which gives readers some insight to both Laura and Caleb’s instant attraction and their valiant efforts to keep work and play separate. I enjoyed the romance, but I didn’t feel a strong chemistry between the two main characters.

The bulk of the secondary characters are Caleb’s family. I loved the Kirkpatrick family-- Caleb, Josh, Connor and Mary Grace. They’re a warm, close-knit family, and they bring a lot of charm and soul to the story.

The ending is neatly wrapped up. A few plot points were left dangling which was a bit dissatisfying, and some of the resolutions were unrealistic. However, Saved by a Cowboy is fiction and a romance, not a suspense/thriller. Overall, it is an entertaining read. The story, the characters are engaging, and the women are strong and independent. The plot is well paced. It is clear that Ms. Daniels is familiar with life in Nebraska from the richly detailed description of ranch life.

Running from the mob boss is why she takes the offer to cook for a ranch in the middle of nowhere Nebraska. Will the ranch boss be the reason she stays?

Great characters. Great writing. More romance than erotica and a super interesting storyline made this a very satisfying read. The heroine is truly believable and everyone’s reactions are on par. Would love to see some more of the other couples but fleshing out the main characters was obviously this Authors priority, thankfully! Just enough loose ends floating around to make a great series but not leave you lost and confused.

As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock I give this one the full five hearts for touching romance, family and fun mixed with suspense and action. A great read for anyone with only a few mild scenes that might need some parental guidance in advance for younger readers.

Will “Laura” come clean to work with the cowboy and maybe have more? Will the mob boss catch up to her? Interested? Read it!
I found this interesting, dangerous, and sometimes romantic. Cowboys and mobsters, who would have thought?

Good Romance to get Away from it all....

Strong female lead, average plot, but enough details and turns to make up for that. The ranch setting adds to the plot and made me want to move there.
