Hi there! I'm an author of mostly sci-fi/fantasy YA novels, like Legend, Warcross, The Young Elites, Skyhunter, and Stars & Smoke. My adult fantasy debut, Red City, releases this October 14, 2025.

I graduated from the University of Southern California and currently live in LA with my family. Before becoming a full-time writer, I was an Art Director at a video game company. Now I spend most of my time writing, trying to keep my plants alive, and getting stuck in traffic. I feel very honored that I get to tell you stories, and my deepest wish is always that my books can offer you some joy, solace, entertainment, and/or escape. With all my heart, thank you for reading.

I actually read the first book when it first came out, and I recall being riveted by a new spin on the dystopian genre that was so dear to my heart at the time. And here I am, 6 years later, with this re-read being the reintroduction to my love of books that I had sadly abandoned in middle school.

Although I had barely remembered the plots for The Young Elites and Warcross, I do remember being obsessed with Marie Lu's writing. As I apparently still am now, because I found myself visibly gasping along with the plot twists (no matter how predictable) and my heart sinking along with Emika's at every failure. For someone who knows pretty much nothing about coding, I found it really easy to visualize the concept, with the descriptions of "shields" and being able to "go invisible". I loved reading through the actual Warcross games, and I felt like I was watching the icy world unfold piece by piece as the players wove through the battlefield. I'm pretty critical of action scenes because even a little detail being off can mess up the scene I'm painting in my head and pretty much ruin it for me. But Marie Lu executes action so well, probably because she used to work at a video game company and knows firsthand how to write it accurately. The smart plays that the Phoenix Riders used had me on the edge of my seat,

The thing that really freaked me out to the point of unbelievability was It was a good author move to make sure we knew Hideo's true emotions sometimes, though. Because who knew what that man was thinking otherwise.

Now if we talk about the characters, I have to say I'm a sucker for authors blurring the lines between good and evil. Anyone who has lived in this world (or, bonus, watched Attack on Titan), knows that almost everyone exists in a plane of moral grayness, no matter if they lean towards black or white. Marie Lu manages to push those boundaries, from smaller characters like Tremaine and Jax to main ones like Hideo and Zero. Although I was kind of wishing for more fleshing out of the Pheonix Riders, especially Asher and his relationship with his brother, I . Emika herself grabbed my attention as a narrator, with her obvious wit and fearless nature. I'm very relieved she didn't stick with the brooding, "I only work alone" Batman act and finally got the Riders in on the scheme, because that stereotype gets tiring incredibly fast. I had some mixed feelings about Hideo, .

And of course, I cannot forget the spectacular tricks and plot twists that emerged from the book. .

Baseline is: I loved this book! It brought back a bit of nostalgia of borrowing from my middle school library and sitting in between the shelves to read in my free periods. The concept is fresh and unique, the diversity is very much appreciated, and the setting is wonderfully crafted.

Book 1's opening spent more time in world building and setting up the character than I liked. Many filter words also rubbed me the wrong way. Once we got into the Warcross Games themselves, it became a page turner. Marie drives the stakes higher and higher and adds lots of twist to lead to a surprise ending.

Gold star for featuring a hacker girl with rainbow colored hair. We need more characters that show women shining with computers.

Book 2 with its many twisty turns will keep you guessing until the end. Deductions for logic gaps I couldn't resolve, a paltry recap of book 1, and lack of scene setting at many chapter beginnings. When I continued after Ems arrived at the dome, I was so confused I had to go back a chapter to figure out who is where.

Extra gold stars for featuring THREE leading ladies, including the self-taught hacker and a degreed scientist. Like book 1, great diversity with participants pulled from around the globe.

Empfehlenswert :)

Highly Recommended :)

If you love diving into a fantasy world, this is the right book for you. The fantasy world depicted here doesn’t seem so impossible thanks to modern technology, making it easier to imagine everything.

The book consists of two volumes, each with its ups and downs. Overall, it’s a very thrilling work, especially because of the unexpected plot twist in the second part. In my opinion, this book deserves much more attention, especially since I found the combination of e-sports, artificial intelligence, the future, and romance truly great.
