Cordelia has never known anything but the safety of her fathers guarded compound where she’s lived her entire life. A life that, as the alphas daughter, has always been a privileged one, albeit an incredibly sheltered one. Until one night, life as she knows it, is flipped entirely upside down when she’s promised to another alpha in order to buy safety for her father’s pack. This doesn’t exactly sit well for Cordelia seeing as she has different plans for her life, even if she doesn’t know what those plans are just yet. Out of fear of what she doesn’t want her life to become, she does the unthinkable and tells her father the one thing he’ll never tolerate from anyone in his pack, especially not his daughter. She tells him no. As a result, Cordelia learns just what kind of depraved man and alpha her father is and is left a broken, bleeding mess because of it. After finding kindness and compassion from two strange men who show up at the compound and help her when she is no longer capable of helping herself, Cordelia does the only thing she thinks she can do in order to survive and not be stuck in a world of abuse and misery. She runs. Unfortunately for Cordelia, she doesn’t make it very far before she finds herself in trouble again and at the mercy of another male with alpha tendencies. This alpha also comes with a brother by blood and one by choice. The problem is, Cordelia’s not so sure she could ever find a place in a pack again after everything she’s survived. She won’t have long to figure it out though because, no matter the cost, her father is determined to find her and bring her home.
Warning - Due to certain sensitive sexual subject matter and abusive situations, this book may contain triggers for some people. It’s also a Reverse Harem book.
/!\WARNING/!\ The book pretty much opens with an explicit gang rape. Even without connecting to the heroine, it was really a horrible scene to read.
Reading the reviews, I admit I didn't give the book a chance. But here's the thing: I do not like Mary Martel's books. I feel like her books are a bunch of ramblings with unlikable characters. And while a morbid fascination or some obscure siren powers make me come back to the Ariel Kimber series every time despite hating it, I wasn't going to do the same with Ashes.
This book was recommended, and the dark plot was great. A young, naïve h brutalised by those she should have been able trust. She is rescued by two wolf shifters, and there was a third damaged H wo also rescues her - by knocking her on the head! It continued downhill from there, with pages and pages of descriptive (substitute - tedious) telling. Her men talk, explain and describe their every past, current and future thought, action and emotion - so far removed from how men think and speak. I wanted to see the h rise stronger with her mates, but she didn't grow much at all - I don't count the violent ending, she too is a wolf after all. The idea of the plot was great, but the writer needs an editor and better beta readers who can help the writer show rather than endlessly tell.
110%, Absolutely, Definitely, Most Assuredly, Without No Doubts Whatsoever “MY CUP OF TEA”!!!
I LUCKING FOVED IT!! The only thing I could have possibly asked for was MORE...
The things that Cordelia had to endure and overcome would have broken just about anyone. But there she was trying to be the best person she could be, and even gave those nasty mean girls the benefit of the doubt to only be backstabbed and hurt yet again.
Man oh man then we have Darius, Luca, and Callum who so became her knights in not so shiny armor. They never once doubted that she was theirs or that they would do everything they could to protect her. I can’t wait to see what happens with this awesome foursome in the next book.
So in my humble opinion if you are a fan of he Paranormal Reverse Harem Genre this book is a definite MUST READ!!
So like I said in the very beginning, this book was 110%, Absolutely, Definitely, Most Assuredly, Without No Doubts Whatsoever “MY CUP OF TEA”, Hell I think it’s even my dang gallon of tea!!
I was truly disappointed in this book - not as it was sold to be - the FMC just has zero consistency and it very much a tell not show kind of book that was very distracting from the few parts in the book that had real potential. The FMC spends 60% of the book with one guy, and in the middle, skips a week and goes from kidnapped to oh, we're fine and now I want him. Skips a week. Nothing inbetween no segway of the relationship actually building. Just insta-love done badly. This book really did have potential, but it was a serious let down and I'll be submitting to Amazon to get my money back.
This book would have received 4 stars but for the fact I feel 50% of the book was full of filler that was not only unnecessary but had me skimming endlessly.
My reaction to the first 3 chapters:
My reaction of the next 50% of the book:
The last 30%:
So short and to the point: There are great things she can do with this story line. It could go to amazing places but I'm not sure I will be joining them on their endeavours.
I will read ANYTHING from this author, no matter the genre. I absolutely love the way she is able to weave a story that'll have you going from tears, to gripping your seat and back again. This book was no different. Be prepared for the dark hard feels from this one too. It'll hit you out of nowhere and by the end leave you wanting even more!
I enjoyed Mary’s other rh series, Brothers of the flame so when she came out with another rh book I couldn’t help but get it as well. Before going into my review, I actually went into this book blind. I have to admit, the beginning was difficult to get through. Be warned there is rape (h by her father and guys from pack) I skimmed through that part because I couldn’t handle reading it. However, it was a great read after that. I liked the h and the guys (really liked Darius). The guys were very loyal to her and there was an incident where an ow tried to rub up against one of the guys in front of h but he shut that down and had no interest in her. Overall, a great read I’ll be looking forward to the next.

I was not impressed with this story. I expected more with the five star rating. The heroine was too immature and had too much angsty inner dialogue. It made the story boring. Additionally, I thought after the heroine’s trauma she would become stronger and in some ways she did. It most other aspects she didn’t. Overall I was just disappointed and upset I spent money on this book.
I made it through part of chapter four (after some skimming) before coming back to read some reviews to see if it was worth powering through. Apparently, it wasn't.
This book has popped up in my recommendations for awhile now so I finally decided to give it a shot. I really liked it. It a reverse Harem so if you don't like multiple hot guys and one almost broken heroine I wouldn't read this book. The Alphas in this book, well what can I say but they truly are alpha-holes but when the h doesn't let her emotions get in the way the behavior is honestly about protecting her. I know some people don't like insta-love and such but these are wolf shifters and their primal instincts call out first before the human has the chance to catch up. The book is well written and flows nicely. For the most part the story, characters, universe building is nicely done. I really want to read the 2nd book of this dualogy. Last disclaimer: physical and emotional triggers.
DNF 41%. I tried to push through but the overly long inner monologues really didn’t do it for me. Sometimes you only need 100 words instead of 500 to get a point across. Disappointed as I really wanted to love it.
I made it halfway through but I just can't anymore. The FMC is not real bright nor consistent and the MMC's are not all that great. Their interactions just seemed like a hot mess and ultimately I felt Meh about it all.
Worth reading ! The characters are well defined and by The end you feel like you know them. Love the ending too, just wish we knew when book 2 is outbx
I liked the plot n the characters. I could easily see this story being a saga with all the different says this story can go. So breathe life into it n let's see if grow to a series.
My Compliments: I BELIVE this book could easily get 5 STARS because the STORYLINE really has potential.
My Complaints: - For A R-H theme, FMC spends to much time with just 1 MMC - BOOK FEELS RUSHED, Lacks exploration on potential scene for character build up and cross-character interaction - To much ramblings. Waste of potential space of the book - No emotional inter-character growth. The only growth between Darius and Cordelia is that they had sex. However the is no growth of emotion towards each other . Feels like empty sex. And at the end of the book the still have their argumentative ramblings.. it's like they didn't reach a level of understanding with each other even with at the end of the book. 11¹ My Missing 2 STARS:- (Potential scene that's worth exploring) * Callum and Luca journey out of the compound after he killed the Alpha and his 2 sons.
* Instead of skipping through week by week and filled with just FMC annoying ramblings towards Darius not speaking to her, could have filled with self reflection on her rape trauma.. Also could provide alternating scene on what the other two MMC doing in those weeks. (I know it has been explained in short that they went places to places to empty their safe deposit boxes but it would have been nice to get a scene on it)
* After the scene where Angel gets caged by Darius, could have fit a scene where A Pack Member POV who may have lack of loyalty for the alpha / disagree to this treatment towards Angel, who don't mind being TRAITOR just to get a BJ from her and let her out of the cage.
* FMC had in-head rambling about the TRAITOR (while Angel's storytelling time about her clever life-plan) and plans to inform her alpha mates about it. Scene in the car, she's rambling about what happened to her (with crying that causes the alphas not to understand what she's saying) The she passed out wake up in bed and no more talk on what happened..
* I feel like there is not enough trauma healing for FMC.. (From virgin to gang-bang raped and abused, then a month later had sex.. with 'best-friend' Darius.. Physical trauma able to heal when shifted but mental trauma? 1 time emotional breakdown in the car and told Darius the full detailed version of the tragedy and that's it.. And not even because of potential-mate induced hormones. Since Darius didn't mention that FMC feels like his potential mate like Callum and Luca mention they feel.)
My Questions:- 1) What happend to the Jasmine chick after the scene change to FMC shifting wolf and running away? 2) Why is the no pack interaction (River Ash Pack) between the MCs and the members of the pack?

I received a copy of this book from the author for an honest review. I had to take a few minutes to let this book really sink in. Some scenes were hard to read and had me fighting mad. Ok so let me start with WOW!!! The beginning of this book tore me up. Really how cold can a family be especially a father? What Cordelia had to endure should have broken her but she is one strong woman that can pick herself up and keep going. Everyone she thought loved her or at least cared about her let her down in a BIG way. Her saving grace was the two strangers who were alpha wolves who helped her when she was at her lowest. After all she endured how could she trust these strangers. After the last blow of having a door slammed in her face she was done and going to set out on her own. She would trust no one and rely only on herself. The alphas that found her Luca and Cal knew she was theirs and was so disappointed when the realized she was not going to meet up with them like she said. OH MY GOD lets talk about Darius because I'm all about this tormented scared soul. He is Luca and Cal's brothers and when he realized Cordelia was special to them he had stop her when he realized she was going to run. Well he put an end to that really quick and took her when she tried to run. Yep that's one way to stop her. His plan was to take her back to his family home and have the brothers meet up with them. I fell in love with Darius really the like/hate between Darius and Cordelia was off the charts for sure. One of my favorites was in the gas station all I can say is I loved that cane wielding grandma. Even though I love Darius there is something about Callum that interest me but I have not got a good feel for Luca yet. All three have strong feelings for their Cordelia and would protect her with their life. Cal and Luca want time with Cordelia like Darius had but they know they need to have patients with Cordeli and give her the space she needs right now. Everything Cal, Luca and Darius has done up to this point to protect themselves and Cordelia is going to catch up with them. Let me tell you it is going to get ugly and messy. I suppose we will see who will stand by the brothers and Cordelia and who will betray them because oh yes there will be some traders. Callum, Luca, Darius and Cordelia will need to be on the same page to withstand what is coming their way.
Cordelia has led a privileged, sheltered life as the Alpha's daughter. She's never known life outside the safety of her fathers guarded compound and while he may be harsh at times, she's lived comfortably and been allowed to indulge her interests. That all changes when he decides to marry her off in the best interests of himself and the pack. When she tries to stand up for herself she learns just how evil, how depraved he is. Violated, bleeding, broken Cordelia is found by two strangers who have broken into the compound. They get her to safety and help her heal. Then she runs. As it turns out, she runs into more trouble. Fearful and angry Cordelia soon finds that safety is found with unexpected people and that family does not mean blood.
Dark pasts, depraved daddies, damaged, deadly Alphas. This book held me in its grip from the beginning. I gasped, I fumed, I giggled. I was enthralled. My heart went out to Cordelia. I look forward to watching her come into her own. It's not that she was weak, just unprepared, then traumatized. By the end though, naked and proud we got a glimpse of the glorious woman she will be. Callum, Luca, and Darius all twisted and damaged in their own ways. Darius as the grumpy bestie was my absolute favorite. His moments of confusion, his fierce protective streak, his unguarded laugh were everything. Callum with his scars and his cuddly wolf was wonderful. I didn't feel the connection as much with Luca but am confident I will.
This book is not for the fainthearted reader. It is not a sweet, soft shifter story. It's harsh, ugly, brutally violent. Never have lines been drawn between good and bad characters more than in this book. I'm not sure who I despised more, the established Alphas or the conniving women. This shifter world needs the war that is coming. A cleanse is needed. Cordelia, Callum, Luca, and Darius need to lead the way. I can't wait for more.
Ashes is the great first book in a new series, The River Ash Pack.
Cordelia has lived a life hidden away from the world. As the daughter of the alpha, she has been protected but never truly felt loved or safe. After surviving the ultimate betrayal and being tremendously abused by her father, she is helped by two strangers and then kidnapped by a third. One night is all it takes for Cordelia's life to completely change, and although she suffers greatly her life begins to take a turn for the better.
I really liked Cordelia's character. She is strong, having survived all that she has, but she is still vulnerable and healing. She is scared and not afraid to acknowledge her weaknesses. Even though she meets Callum and Luca first, she doesn't really get to know them in this story. I enjoyed both of their characters (especially the scarred and powerful Callum) and can't wait for Cordelia to get closer to them in the coming books. Now Darius, I LOVE Darius! He starts off as the gruff kidnapper with a dark past and ends up being this amazing protector who cares for Delia in the sweetest ways. She completely reveals a new side to him that even his brothers are shocked to see. I'm so happy that he is the one to really get close to her first!
Ashes is a great start to this new series. There is good world building, introducing us to various packs and the social dynamics in the shifter world, great characters, and a fantastic plot that has me excited to read more! It does start off a little dark for Cordelia, but once everything has been burned to ashes, she'll have the chance to rise up and grow stronger than ever with three tough men by her side. I look forward to the next book this series has to offer!
Check out this review and others at www.Twinsietalk.com www.Facebook.com/Twinsietalk www.Twitter.com/Twinsietalk www.Tsu.co/Twinsietalk www.instagram.com/twinsietalk Newsletter : http://eepurl.com/brwkPv Ashes by Mary Martel I received this book from the author for an honest review. Jesus lemme get my head straight after reading this book. If there are a few things you need to know about Mary and her stories here they are…..Her men love FIERCE, Her Women are NOT WEAK, The chemistry is crazy in all the right places, and there will be blood…LOL …but I am serious!! Now if you read the trigger warning I will say it’s not AS ROUGH of a scene as I was expecting or have read in the past but friends, its hard. Its hard because how can someone who should love and protect you, do that to you!! Its also quickly done and done well so we feel for Cordelia, but mainly so we can understand the shape that Cal and Luca find her in…it was bad……. Cal, Luca and Darius……they are all so special to Cordelia for their own reasons, but this book is owned by Darius. Dude, he was so scary and then so sweet but so fierce. I mean I don’t think I knew how menacing he was until we see him with his old pack….dang he was hawt!!! Cal and Luca long for their time for Cordelia but understand and show true patience to be with their girl because make no bones about it, SHE. IS. THEIR. GIRL! Seeing the story of the impending war due to everything that plays out in the book is making me on edge because the 4 of them need to be on the same page to stick together and to make sure no one feels left out of this unusual mating!!
Omg amazing! I love all of Mary’s books and this one did not disappoint at all! Cordelia is the alphas daughter, he is basically a dick so is her brother. She’s abused so she decides to run away she meets Callum and Luca who save her and gain feelings towards her but then she runs from them to her brother, her brother then betrays her by phoning their father. she runs again and is kidnapped by Darius ❤️who is Lucas brother she eventually agrees to run away with him to the house where he was brought up. The pack want him or his brother as alpha. Callum and Luca arrive after reading the letter Darius left saying he was leaving to go to the house they were brought up in. But are shocked to see Cordelia. Darius and Cordelia begin to fall in love with each other which shocks both Callum and Luca but they agree they want to share her. Her father is looking for her and an insider of the pack tells him where she is so he finds her which she then gets put in a cage but escapes to find the packs fighting.....That’s all I’m going to give away 😛 So looking forward to the next one to see Cordelia fall in love with Callum and Luca Darius is definitely my favourite though ❤️

Ashes was a very very good read. Cordelia was then pack princess, but don't let that fool you. Though she might have had more opportunities for education and was safe from unwanted advances, there is a gross double standard for females and she was subject to the same as every other female in her pack.
The heroes are not your typical heroes, but they are perfect for this book. Darius is a brilliant mixture of sweet and psychotic. The arguments between he and Cordelia are hilarious and he ends up so confused. Callum is possessive, but in a sneaky way you don't take offense but coupled with his deadly skills others need to be careful what/how they act towards Cordelia or his switch will flip. And Lucas, though it may seem he suffered the least of them all I believe he's the most emotionally vulnerable.
This shifter world that Ms. Martel developed is harsh with many ugly sides to it. I recommend you take the trigger warning seriously. There is a scene that is very traumatic so be aware of what you can handle.
That being said, it was still a great read and I can't wait to see what happens next!
Before I start my review please read the trigger warnings in the blurb. With that being said ....I love this so much. Cordelia goes through some soul breakingly traumatic events before meeting her mates. Her father, the alpha of the pack, is an evil man and he got what was coming to him in the end and her little brother was no better. Her mates have their own abusive and heart wrenching pasts to contend with too. They are all broken in some way. I really like how Delia doesn't let her past break her and that she is getting stronger in her own way from it. Darius is my favorite right now, Luca and Callum are awesome too but there is something about Darius and his relationship with Delia that is breath taking. I'm so glad that Mary decided to do more then 1 book for their story because I definitely want more. I want to see how they will put together the splintered pack and I want to see Delia's and Luca and Callum's relationships grow. This book is beautifully and creatively written and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.
Really enjoyed this book, good storyline and characters.
Correction to some reviews: the rape scene isnt the opening scene, its chapter 3 and whilst unpleasant it is not very graphic or detailed and is more about impression. So whilst horrid isnt the worst gang rape scene I've ever read by a long shot. It was mild.
The only criticism I have with this book, and it's a real shame cos it's a great book, is that there is way too much unfettered inner dialogue, it goes on for pages and pages. This detracts massively from the book cos you just want to move on rather than the read the inner diatribe endlessly and so by the end I started to skim.
This is just bad editing!!! Come on we have a great book which is spoilt by something that can be easily rectified. We dont need virtual chapters with 80% inner thoughts!!
If this doesn't change I cant see book 2 being a success cos who wants to read a book of inner thoughts?
I'll try one more book of this authors to see if it's this book or her writing style as a whole if it's the latter that'll be the end of my journey.
YES!! Cordelia is one seriously amazing woman. Mary Martel always has me girl crushing on her female leads. But Darius and Callum are seriously straight out of my fantasy man playbook. All dark and brooding, mean and surly, full of dark past hurts and not afraid to get violent and dirty when needed, but sweet and caring to their lady love. Yup, I’m all over that likes bees and honey! Then there is Luca, poor sweetheart Luca, he’s a softy but he’s also got that hard edge. These characters are perfect! Mary had me sucked into this story from the VERY start, I cried, I laughed and I got all the warm fuzzy, mushy feelings too. Cordelia goes through one of the most horrific experiences anyone could ever endure, then ends up on one hell of an adventure that has her questioning herself. The way she grows as a character through the story was absolutely beautiful to read and I can not wait for the next book!
Dark(Trigger Warning). Paranormal. Rh. 3 Alpha Wolf Shifters. Mate bond. In this shifter world women are just possession and tools for the male wolves. Cordelia knows that even if she's the Alpha's daughter she is not an exception, that she'll be sold off the a Alpha of her father's choosing but she doesn't have to just be ok with it. So when her father tells her it's time, she argues that they could find another way, one where she's not going to the hands of a rumored to be cruel Alpha. She only finds hers with bruises and scars that will never heal. This starts off super dark (I almost threw up, dark). Cordi is a bit naive(which is to be expected) but she is super smart and very insightful. There is a sight insta-bond going on with all of them. Cordi is also very open with how she's feeling (it might just be with Darius, well see). They guys are awesome. With the bond they are super protective. I'm definitely looking to this series.
This book was fire, literally hot ashes between Cordelia, Darius, Luca, and Callum, in a good and bad way, too!!! Yes, this book has a trigger warning because Cordelia and her guys have gone through some tough, terrible things, but I bet they’ll come out stronger in the end. They have so much fire in their souls and this insane chemistry between them all. I like shifter books so I might be biased, but this shifter book is really, really good and soo sooo different than any that I’ve read!!! I love Cordelia, Callum, Luca, and Darius and I can’t wait for the next book to see how they come out on top with two wolf packs hunting them down for war! And I’m excited for Cordelia to fall in love with Luca and Callum next, now that she’s head over heels for Darius! I highly recommend this RH shifter book!
I was hooked before I even bought the book. I love Mary’s Ariel Kimber series and knew this book would be just as amazing. And I wasn’t disappointed.
I was immediately pulled into the book within the first few pages, and had to walk away for a bit to get my head on straight. I will say — while there were definitely trigger warnings, I would consider this book “dark” since it wasn’t just a glossing over of events; not to mention towards the end of the book. HOWEVER, I loved this book.
Darius and Delia started off on the wrong foot, but I loved how their relationship developed. She was able to find safety and acceptance with him, and, while still battling demons, was able to trust him. I feel for Luca and Callum, but I don’t doubt that, with time, they’ll build that relations show with Cordelia, too.
I liked the premise of the story but dear lord there was so much inner dialogue and very little speaking. Everything was told 50 different ways and 1 scene took pages upon pages of inner dialogue before we could move on. Don’t get me wrong, obviously that’s important for a book but as someone else said on here “sometimes something can be said in 100 words and not 500” and I think that sums this book up perfectly. Lots of rambling. I skimmed a lot when my eyes started to cross. Also we skipped some pivotal moments in the building of the relationship. One minute we’re unsure of the guy constantly bickering and the next we’re seeking comfort in him but no build up to that point. Which is usually the best part! Definitely see the potential as an author just needs to be cleaned up a bit and not so long winded.
