A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

Ironheart: Riri Williams collects pretty much the beginnings for the character and for the most part this was a quick and fun read.

It's a little odd in respect to where this falls in the whole Iron-Man continuum. I'd say that it's fairly new reader friendly although that's slightly muddied a little due to Riri Williams taking over the main Invincible Iron-Man series here after Civil War II - there's a little bit of story bleeding from those series plus the Infamous Iron-Man title involving Dr Doom also. It's not a convoluted story by any means, but it does slot into a seemingly convoluted time for the Iron-Man series itself.

The art is great here. It's in keeping with the 'Marvel Now!' era, which I personally feel was a more interesting time for Marvel than it gets credit for.

Overall, I doubt the plot will blow you away here, but it's hard not to appreciate the characterisation and the humble approach to Riri Williams. The inclusion of Starks AI is a great addition, which adds a little extra intrigue and fun to the series. If you're a completionist reader just watch out for that greater Iron-Man continuity.

Damn. I didn’t think it would be that good, and I’m not a big fan of Iron Man comics overall. But this is great writing from Bendis, great art, and another strong new character defined.

I like Riri a lot. Having recently read some Kamala Khan Ms Marvel stuff, a few of the beats feel a little familiar: they're both young girls who idolise heroes, one in particular after whom they model themselves, and both have fun little moments of disbelieving excitement when they realise they're fighting *the villain* they saw on that thing that time, and that kinda thing. Riri's certainly a different character, though, and although I feel like I might not have been totally up-to-date with all the references to wider Marvel canon, I still really enjoyed this collection.

It should be noted I'm still relatively new to understanding Marvel which colors my view. This work itself is a mix of a 2.5 and 3 but I'm going with a 3. There was definitely some boredom while reading with portions of middle having my interest from learning the Marvel world not from the actual storyline inside this. But the final quarter stuff with Latveria was nice and definitely pulled this up.
The writing from Bendis is not my favorite. His dialogue can be wonky with too much wordings and pauses. He's trying to emulate natural speech but it comes off a bit plastic. Its also can be quite quippy with landings that are hit or miss. The story beats were hit or miss. After a certain point 1/3 or 1/2 way in there was just a sort of malaise I had while reading it. It would be waiting for that one or two neat parts of the story in each issue while the rest just happened.
The overall idea wasn't too bad. It just stuck too much with the Tony Stark and Riri thing. It also dones't help that it feels like Riri is just swept into an Iron Man storyline. Like, much of this is about Tony Stark and those around him with Riri stuck in the middle of it. I hope going forward Riri is expanded as more of her own character. The best part is the Latveria stuff with Lucia von Bardas and running Latveria. Its the least tied to Iron Man with a seeming long-since-used character and sees Riri tale her own stance and interact in a fun way against and with SHIELD.
Again though there is a big focus on the Tony Stark AI which I found uninteresting. It wasn't bad but his AI talked so much throughout the story as Bendis really wanted to solidify that mentor student relationship of Riri and Tony. The lengthy dialogue is an overall issue but Riri and Tony's AI are just to verbose when together. It just lead to so much extra dialogue taking up pages. It would actually take over fights where Riri would have these fight montages where its just them talking instead of letting her establish more of herself through interacting with the numerous enemies she fights rushedly on page. The idea of an emotional AI is neat but its just filled with so much extra talking as both AI Tony and Friday are rather verbose.
Riri herself is an interesting character. I like how they made her similar to Tony in her, smarts and bull-headed cocky my way or the highway-ness. I do wish she was written a less self important but a characters gotta have growth so I hope they do something with it. I do wish she got more independence from Stark stuff to give her more individuality. She did have the deal with struggling to see the world and the fear that she'll turn into Dr. Doom if not raised right / keeps the right perspective but that seems to be not built on here. They also had Natalie. I think her dealing made for an easy sympathetic background that I'm a sucker for. I do wish we got more time with her though as they had a fun dynamic together.
Art is always Stefano Caselli with help on issue 11. His art is very solid and enjoyable. It’s anatomical and detailed while still filling that modern slick Marvel art look. I like the way he draws Riri's eyelashes and face. Its expressive and he excels at that upset slight poutiness that her attitude can give off. Its hard to tell who's style is who in the 11th issue as it constantly swaps each style as they do a little vignette about how cool Stark is. While the art stuff if nice it was my least favorite issue as it doesn't feature Riri in it really and instead talks up Tony as they probably after this went back to Tony for mainline Iron Man and wanted to please fans by doing this little lead in as Riri was unpopular.
I don't give enough props to colorists but Marte Gracia deserves a shout-out. I'm fairly sure he's the guy that makes the special effects look as nice as they are. I especially love how they make the Riri inside the suit loook cool especially with the cool glow-y holographic lens. He also plays with some monochromatic stuff. His use of strong glares aren’t always my favorite but that’s a look I generally don’t like. If you a fan of those strong glares in your comics you’ll like Gracia though as I feel like he does it especially strong when he does it.

Man, i just love when new characters make their ways through the mainstream super hero universe, and just happens to have great stories. Bendis is a master in this kind of role, as we know, and then, he brought to us a fresh touch with Riri being Ironheart.

Well, Tony Stark is "dead" due to another mega saga (and yes, he will return, somehow, and the status quo will be established again), but, between it, we got the introduction of Riri Williams, a young, brilliant girl, who just build it her own super hero armor and get the mission to live up to Tony's legacy. Ow, and Tony just happens to have uploaded his consciouness to her armor, so now, his like, a Jarvis, with feelings. Kind of average, but at least, we got some amazing interaction between him and Riri.

And that's the high point of this book, as all of Bendis stories. The dialogue, how close he makes you feel about the characters is great.

The story is so much fun, we got some kind of retcom of Tony's mother, which is cool, we got Pepper, MJ, Friday, some nice villains, and Riri being awesome. All of this in the amazing art os Stefano Caselli, which is very close to what David Marquez usually does on Bendis's book.

Again, i just love teenage super heroes and fresh new characters as our mainstream guys. And, yes, Bendis is just teaching how to do it, everyday. Great read.

I thought this was a decent introduction to the character. I watched the Ironheart show previously and was interested in learning more about her. This was a fun read with a decent amount of action.

Brian Michael Bendis writes young superheroes well. Humor is usually actually funny and not just...dumb. Which happens A LOT in comic books imo (and animated shows). These clip along at a good pace and keep things interesting. Art wasn't unique, but it was good. Felt similar to the Miles Morales and the new Ms. Marvel, and that is, of course, why I enjoyed it.

“i was never meant to fly. but how does the poem go? 'into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear…i rise.'”

💫 representation: Riri Williams "Ironheart" is a Black FMC, Miles Morales is a Black side, Ms. Marvel is a Pakistani-American side

💫 content warnings for: death, violence, grief, mentions of loss

i love Ironheart. that's an understatement. her design is so pretty, and she’s good inside and out. i adore her inner monologue too: she’s funny, sarcastic, and extremely intelligent. i feel a strong kinship with her. she's a child genius (later turned doctor) who spends all of her time inventing in her lab. she doesn't get along with people well, but she tries (same, girl). and oh, what i would give to wear the Ironheart suit.

Bendis' writing is fun to follow, and the art is great. there's brilliant banter between Riri and Miles, and i love the representation of powerful Black women in Riri. i think she's someone many little girls can look up to. plus, with the appearances of Ms. Marvel and Miles, what's not to love?

p.s. any book with Morgan Le Fay in it, i’ll read-

Good start to an arc that sadly ends very lackluster in the next book. Loved seeing Riri interact with Pepper and MJ and Sharon. And AI Tony, obviously. 3.5 rounded up because of the page about how Tony goes to orphanages to hold babies. Comics will truly never get better than that.

Tony Stark is gone but we now have Ironheart: Riri Williams, a super smart kid from Chicago filled with idealism but still just a teenager. Riri is a new young hero for a complex world trying to find her way. Lots of people want things from her and she doesn't always get it right, but that makes Riri an even better character to read about.

Riri's greatest power is her blunt honesty!

We are introduced to Riri in a classic Marvel origin story, but it hurt more due to the reality of manipulating gun violence in black communities. Keeping with the theme, we are reminded how life for an intelligent young black girl has drastically improved compared to historic barriers faced by previous greats. Unlike her predecessor Iron Man, Riri understands that putting on the suit is more than being a hero for the day but creating lasting change.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel, it felt like watching a movie! The graphic novel builds on many existing universes within Marvel and does a great job using notable characters to solidify Riri's status as a hero. The art is very vivid and well done. The variant cover art is amazing! I am really looking forward to the next volume.

3.5

I've been hearing great things about Riri Williams so I thought I might check it out. I will say Bendis is a talented writer with the young characters and Ironheart was right up his alley. I haven't been a big Iron man fan in print and I was expecting more of the same, but I was quite surprised. Ironheart is replacing the current Iron Man in this book and it's about Riri Williams getting everything together to become a superhero.

Why the 3.5?

Not my favourite book but as a young female superhero storyline I recommend it for all people with young daughters. The storyline was a little uneventful for me and the youthful character wasn't quite to my taste. The book is well developed but it wasn't for me. If I was a little younger maybe but sadly I found myself reading other books in between. The younger crowd will eat this up.

Let's stare at this cover for a moment, shall we? How cool is this cover.

And without being a superhero comic aficionado, I thought this one did well to introduce me to a new origin story, one for Riri Williams who is now Ironheart after her STEM-loving prodigy brain is then visited by the AI version of Iron Man and thus she is pulled into the world to save it and maintain it with the help of others.

The action sequences are engaging, Riri's origin is awesome, the dialogue is easy to understand, and I kind of loved it in a way that some others provide *too much* and then I'm so absolutely lost that I can't just enjoy it for what it is. This is a cool new superhero story and that's that.

Was very oblivious to the fact that this comes before Ironheart: Meant to Fly. My fault completely. But now I know important context behind Riri’s father and her best friend Natalie.

With Marvel comics, I often find that when the a scene shifts to a perspective other than the title character I get bored. However every side character from Riri's mom, to Friday, to Pepper, and to Mary Jane (Which by the way, super cool to see MJ have a chance to shine!) was entertaining to read.

Loved reading this origin story of Riri Williams. She’s incredibly smart and funny and full of life even in the face of a massive tragedy and immense grief. At the end of the book, they offer variant drawing of Riri and almost all of them make her look like a grown woman even though the comic explicitly states she is 15 years old. It reminds me of the research around Black children not being identified as children and are often presumed to be adults. It really irritated me. Let Black kids be kids.

I haven't read many comics like this and feel like I have missed a lot of context. I really enjoyed like Riri's character and her being Ironheart but I think I might have needed to read some other books before this one. I thought this was a stand alone and maybe it is, but I definitely needed some context. I did enjoy the book and it makes me want to read more comics from the Marvel universe, but I'm going to do some more research before I start the next one.

While a bit wonky and featuring a lot of lesser know characters, Riri shines with personality and an interesting addition as a superhero and character. Not sure I love the crazy AI thing they seem to be setting up and the weird art style shift in the middle of the last issue took me off. Will definitely need to check Civil War II to see the original intro of Riri, and will keep an eye out to read more of her.

I was on maybe a 4 for this until the last book. Pages dwindling down, I was waiting for a new villain pop off ... then ... 5 stars, tee'd me up, then dropped the mic.

Also, it made me appreciate the show slightly more. I think this would have made a way better intro for the character, but obviously, that budget and fitting into the MCU might have been issues.

Collecting the first eleven issues of Invincible Iron Man, some content is repetitive in this format. White, female superheroes fighting the new, underage, iron-clad character rebranding herself as Ironheart, and still developing a white-savior narrative.

I was admittedly a bit lost because this is not a continuity I am familiar with, but I think it is a sold story on its own and won't be too confusing to those who know a bit about the comics. If, however, your ONLY background on Iron Man is the MCU, you WILL be lost.
