A writer in her late thirties retreats to Landes in France for a while, fleeing from her own suffering after the break-up of a relationship. Little by little, she finds solace in writing about the losses in her life, about her person, and about indifference and freedom, and in sharing the doubts that arise in her creative process with a ‘you’ whom she imagines to be on the other side of the paper.
The glass eye, a self-referential element of the authorprotagonist and metaphor for pain and transcendence, also represents the literary concept of the work, a private notebook where fiction imitates and replaces a fragmented reality.

Miren Agur Meabe
84 books13 followersMiren Agur Meabe (Lekeitio, 1962), holds degrees in teaching and Basque philology. She worked as a teacher in the Kirkino Basque school in Bilbao and as a publisher in Giltza for many years. She writes literature for children and for adults, both poetry and prose. Her prizes include the 2001 and 2011 Critic's Poetry Awards for Azalaren kodea and Bitsa eskuetan, and the 2002, 2006, and 2011 Euskadi Prizes for her three young adult novels, Itsaslabarreko etxea, Urtebete itsasargian, and Errepidea. Her book Mila magnolia-lore is on the 2012 International Board on Books Honour's List. Some of the honorary awards she has received are the Lauaxeta Prize (2007), the Rosalia de Castro Prize (2012) and the Deia-Hemendik Prize (2015). Her writings have been translated into several languages, and into Braille. She has been a member of the Basque Academy of Letters since 2006.

أشار عليها أحد الناشرين بالكتابة عن عينها الزجاجية فقد تلهمها شيئاً ما...
ومن هنا كانت العين الزجاجية ذات بُعدين أحدهما حقيقي ما يؤكد هويتها الخاصة والبُعد الآخر مجازي يعكس الخسارة في حياة الكاتبة...
لقد كان ذلك النص مرآة شفيفة..ناعمة ولكن يتراءى لك صدوعاً بوجهها...لا تأبه لأطرافها الحادة المُسننة وتنبشها بأطراف أناملك ، يلتصق بها الكلمات المخبوءة...المرتجفة...
جراح لم تتعرف على الألتئام....فراغ لم يسعه الأمتلاء...
الروح التي تتشبث بالحب وإلا فهى لا شيء...لذا تراها ترثي مرارة الفقد...الخسارة..والهجران...
العين الزجاجية...بلورية نقية...يتماوج على سطحها الحزن الشفيف الذي يعقد بحميمية خالصة رباطاً وثيقاً مع عين من يُحدق بها...لن يفلتها أبداً...
هل أخبرتك يا سيدتي بأن عينك اليسرى الزجاجية لا تمثل خيباتك....بل كانت علامة لإبداع فريد مٌتميز يُدعى "عين زجاجية"....
إنهم يجعلوننا نعتقد أن الحب والسعادة يسيران جنباً إلى جنب ، وهذا هو الحال في بعض الأحيان ، لكن الأكثر اتحاداً هو بلا شك الحب والألم...

سيرة ذاتية للكاتبة، تعتمد فيها على عينها الزجاجية التي ستعكس من خلالها آلامها وأحزانها وانتكاساتها وأوجاعها وخذلانها وفشلها في الحب، مستعينة بيها لعكس ما تفيض به نفسها من أشياء لا تستطيع البوح بها تلقاء نفسها، لتندفع الكلمات على سطور صفحاتها دون استخدام القلم ولكن فقط من خلال ما تعكسه عينها الزجاجية على غلاف روحها الشفافة

January 26, 2022Hace apenas una semana que terminé de leer otro libro de Miren Agur Meabe, Quema de huesos, que parte, al igual que Un ojo de cristal, de su propia experiencia, aunque no son exactamente autobiografías. Es muy muy extraño que yo lea dos libros escritos por la misma persona con tan poco tiempo de por medio. No estaba en mis planes leer tan pronto Un ojo de cristal, pero lo encontré ayer en una librería y tuve el impulso de comprarlo. También es extraño que yo empiece a leer un libro el mismo día que lo compro (en la mayoría de las ocasiones, pasan semanas, meses o incluso años).
Con todo esto quiero decir que estoy muy emocionada por haber descubierto a una nueva autora con la que siento que conecto íntimamente.

I liked this novel, even though it's not a genre I usually read, and I probably wouldn't have read it if it hadn't **been given to me as a gift from the publisher**
First of all, it’s autobiographical and very aware of this. The novel is full of meta-comments, self-ironies and reflections on the writing process. It centres on a woman who is a fictionalised version of Miren Agur Meabe as she struggles to fill with writing the hole left by her former lover.
What struck me the most about this book was how it made me realise that I have read very few novels in which the main character is a middle-aged woman, and in which her middle age is allowed to fill so much. Here’s a story about a menopausal woman who swears, has sex, is divorced, refuses to care for her ailing father, and doesn’t worry about her son. It is such a refreshingly honest portrait, and though Meabe sometimes comes off as whiny, she does so with a distanced, self-deprecating irony that makes it a surprisingly entertaining read.
With a first-person narrator who is also a writer and poet, it is only natural that the language floats poetically off the page and playfully entangles action and introspection. The descriptions of the landscape and surroundings are deeply sensual, as are the descriptions of her glass eye and the slightly gross surgical procedures involved in fitting it.
A Glass Eye has a lot to say, and though it does so in a sometimes poetically roundabout manner, it has an aching resonance that is difficult to escape.

A velha questão do texto autobiográfico: onde está seu interesse?
Por um lado, o aspecto de singularidade, exemplaridade ou carisma da(o) autora(or) é imprescindível. Por outro, a dicção literária, a construção artificial da sinceridade e das "profundezas". Como diz Fernando Pessoa: “O poeta é um fingidor/ Finge tão completamente/ Que chega a fingir que é dor/ A dor que deveras sente”. Se o material aparente da vida não é suficiente para interessar, é necessário uma faísca interior de inteligência ou linguagem.
Os capítulos de Un ojo de cristal nasceram de uma prática "terapêutica" de escrita de si e para si. Mas para torná-los interessantes para outros(as) me parece faltar trabalho. Como estão, resultam numa série de conclusões sem argumentação. De morais sem fábula. Meabe ensaia uma série de caminhos para seu texto mas não os percorre até o fim. Esboça uma narrativa de sua crise existencial-emocional, mas não a desenvolve. Arrisca um mergulho interior, mas não vai muito além de algumas platitudes. Ocupa-se em criar metáforas para descrever o livro, mas logo em seguida quer explicá-las (e já eram meio óbvias para começo de conversa). Os capítulos sobre o olho poderiam estar na Wikipédia, falta uma perspectiva pessoal intensa que sem dúvida a autora poderia oferecer. Se ela tivesse se dedicado a um desses caminhos, sairia uma obra mais interessante. Como está, é uma leitura enfadonha.

تم توصيف الكتاب كرواية لكني قرأتُه كسيرة ذاتية لحالة حزن/ تأملات داخلية للكاتبة نفسها كتبتها لوصف/ التغلب على/ التصالح مع حالة تمر بها إثرَ انفصالها عن (م.) وأوردتها قراءة/ استطلاع لمشاعرها تجاه التفاصيل حولها، وهو ما وجدتُه آسراً ويُشبهني؛ الطريقة التي ترى بها الأشياء عبر روحها وكلماتِها (وللمفارقة فهي مترجمة أيضاً).
وقد ضمنت بعض الفصول قراءةً حول العين الزجاجية وهي تحاول التصالح معها؛ أن تجد مكمن الجمال فيها، ومن خلالها مكمن جمالها هي.
وجدتُ الترجمة حرفية: جملٌ قصيرة وكلماتٌ مباشرة وكأنها رديفة كلماتٍ معينة في النص الأصل، ورأيت أنها يمكن أن تُصاغ بشكل شعري أكثر تتوافق والحالة الشاعرية للكاتبة التي استخدمت كلماتٍ وجملاً قصيرة أيضاً لوصف توارد خواطرها.

كتاب سيء!
لن يسع القارئ أن يتقبل محتواه بينما الكاتبة تحقّر من ذاتها فيه، تعترف وتظهر ضعف شخصيتها، وتكثر من لوم ذاتها.
لن أقدّر أو أتعاطف مع مشاعرك وأحاسيسك بينما تدهسينها!
ولن أتلمس الأمر من منظور أن له دواعٍ وأدوار أدبية.
"عين زحاجية" سيرة لفتتني لكاتبة عاشت حياتها بعين زجاجية، ولكني لم أرَ في سيرتها ما يستحق أن يروى، ولا دور للعين الزجاجية في أقدار السيرة، عنوان مستعار!
وأينما ذُكرت العين الزجاجية، فكان حشوًا زائدًا بلا معنى.
حياة الكاتبة فارغة، هي فقط تريد أن تستغل موهبتها في الكتابة، ولكن دون هدف حقيقي تنقله، الكتابة وسيلة ولكن الكاتبة في كتابها هذا اعتبرتها غاية.
إكماله مجرد تضييع للوقت.... وزيادة في مخزون الكره لا الشفقة نحو الكاتبة.

This story had a lot of incredibly interesting and thought-provoking lines. I definitely spent a few moments re-reading to make sure I really understood the text. At its crux, it uses a glass eye and all it symbolises with regards to loss as a metaphor for heartbreak and the breakup of a relationship. I think it was quite clever and I'm glad to have read it.

This may not be to everyone's taste. Eloquent, honest and a very real account of what losing a loved relationship can do to you and shows that having the capacity to step back and reflect is a true part of the healing process. The beauty of this is that it is not a memoir you expect.

Colpidor relat autobiogràfic, amb tocs de ficció (o no...), d'una dona de mitjana edat que repassa les clivelles emocionals i físiques que han anat solcant la seva vida.
Amb un estil directe, però elegant i un punt poètic, es despulla de qualsevol complex i buida les seves pors i contradiccions en un llibre curt, però intens.
