Whatever happened to Jake and Patricia?Twenty years to the day after he joined the army, Jake Bloom is a captain in the Florida National Guard and serving with an advisory team in Iraq’s al-Basra province - and his tour has just been extended by three months. Cynical and exhausted, Jake just must ready an Iraqi infantry company for the struggle that lies ahead. Meanwhile Patricia waits at home and wonders about Jake, their family and her life as an army wife.
William Stroock has written a sequel to " A Line Through The Desert" where we follow Jake Bloom from the Persian Gulf War to three tours in Iraq. I'm a veteran of those conflicts and quite simply Stroock nailed the military experience. He described so well the issues faced by military families. He especially communicates how families attempt to cope with deployment. His descriptions of fighting in Iraq could not be more real and vivid. He captures so well the stress of kicking down a door of an insurgent or dealing with IEDs or the chaos of a firefight. He even catches the nuances of a unit prepping for combat or life on a FOB. This is a very good book.
