Some say history repeats itself. Some even say that events repeat themselves in a timeless loop. Nicole and her brothers do not know for sure. But they do know that sometimes when history repeats itself, things can go wrong, and they’re here to fix that. What would have happened if JFK had remained alive? What would happen if Elvis didn’t really die? What would change if one more boy had died in the Holocaust? Nicole and her brothers are there for only one purpose, to make sure history repeats itself exactly as it did the first time around. They have done it well, for many years. But what happens when the rules are slightly bent? When someone chooses to interpret history? Will the world survive? Will they survive? What will be the cost?
“I was here to keep history from changing and not to change it myself…”
Once a year, Nicole and her brothers are summoned to the Black Cave where they are given their aims. They cannot refuse the command, nor are they supposed to waiver from the directive. The aims are always clear. They must make sure that that all events come to pass as they should.
However, Nicole could not watch or orchestrate the death of the man she had grown to love. But if she interfered with history, what would that mean for the present?
The Keepers of the Black Cave: A Time Travel Adventure by Hanit Pahima is a science fiction, time-travel, alternative history adventure.
I have to admit it took some effort to get used to the maligning of historical facts. From the blurb, I thought this book would be an alternative history time-travel where one would meet some historical characters, and their documented history would be changed because of the actions of the protagonists, but that isn’t what this book is at all. If it were, then I would be very concerned because as far as I am aware, King Richard I spent most of his adult life, when not fighting in the Third Crusade, in the Duchy of Aquitaine, southwest of France. He spoke both French and Occitan, and at no time did he go into battle against the Vikings! At least Richard I is who I am assuming the character in this book was supposed to represent, he did have an infamous brother called John after all.
The science-fiction part of this novel was wonderfully executed and I thought Nicole’s depiction was fabulous. Nicole is a very confident woman who takes her job very seriously. But, she is also one to bend the rules of the aims if it serves her purpose to do so. Twice she allowed compassion to overthrow her directive, and she is often ruled by her emotions, which I think made her a very likeable character and one that appeals to the reader. Her situation is unique, and she finds herself on a journey that she thought would never happen, and she deals with the unexpected with the quiet confidence that the reader sees in her all along.
At times this book had a feel of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series, minus the vampires, and I initially thought that this book was aimed at a young adult audience. However, the passionate love scene means that the young adult category is inappropriate. I think this book, minus the love scene, would work exceptionally well in the young adult category, and this is something that perhaps Pahima should take into consideration.
I did enjoy the science fiction part of the book, but I am afraid that the historical inaccuracies ruined this novel for me.
Review by Mary Anne Yarde. The Coffee Pot Book Club.
Spellbinding time travel adventure. Looper meets Timeline.
Cave diving takes on a whole new meaning when you’re a Keeper of history, ensuring prominent figures, occurrences and artifacts conform to the roles they’re destined to perform. Nicole’s a Keeper who’s notched well over eight hundred dives into the Black Cave. A new ‘aim’ or task to accomplish every year.
Nicole’s ancient, but she doesn’t look a day over twenty-seven. Nor does her elder brother Rick or her younger sibling Tray. Together, they’ve been keeping history on track, one aim at a time.
The trio sometimes face dangerous, near-impossible tasks. But they’re always successful. On one week-long aim however, Nicole returns with King Richard. She’d saved him after ensuring history remembers his passing correctly. During her time in the past, the two fell in love. The Black Cave returned them both to present time. But, will Richard be able to cope in the modern age? Can Nicole reconcile motherhood with her dangerous calling? And can either ever prepare for the day their child Jama becomes a Keeper?
Hanit Pahima is a splendid storyteller. She weaves history, fantasy and the paranormal quite fluidly. Her ability to describe scenarios and character emotions, elicits a desire to dive deeper into the tale, and to become intensely involved. The novel is touch of Rian Johnson's Looper but with MCs who do whatever needs doing, a dash of Madeleine L'EngleA Wrinkle in Time with the book’s penetrating character portrayal, and a liberal basting of Michael Crichton’s Timeline with its strong action and accurate historical depiction.
I'm not sure which age group this book is aimed at. I'm not a reader of YA fiction, so I'm not sure of the usual content for that age group - although as far as I am aware, this book has not been marketed as YA. Time travel novels are among my favourite reads, but the idea of time travel itself has to be very carefully handled in order to pull you in and make it feel like it could be real, even though you know it isn't. This story hasn't been well-handled. A very minor point is that the names are all wrong for people of over 800 years old. The story itself is too pat. There's no suspense. The main characters have had centuries to perfect their skills for looking after themselves in their time-travel adventures - expert sword-fighting and lock-picking are two of the skills mentioned - but the newest member of the group is made ready in 2 months. Really? And that 2 months included a holiday, if I remember rightly. I think the author needs to take out the sex (not much of that in there anyway) and market this as a story for older children - maybe the 10-12 age group? It's too childish even for YA. My 1 star for this book reflects my opinion as an adult, well-read member of the reading public. For my main Amazon review I've given 3 stars on the basis that the book could be reworked and remarketed for a younger audience. I'm sorry to have to leave such a negative review when I was so kindly given a free copy of this book in return for my honest opinion. I hope the author finds something constructive among my comments.

Nice debut by a promising author. The plot of the book centers around missions (aims) of the main protagonists - the "Keepers" brothers; Rick, Terry and Nicole. In each mission, they are sent back through time (with the cave acting in the story as a wormhole/time-machine). Later in the story another line is interwoven into the plot, a romantic involvement of Nicole with additional character from one of the aims. In the summary, it is a nice, light read, for fans of time-travel books and hopefully Mrs. Pahima will continue in her literature endeavor and write additional books.
One of the most thrilling books I have recently read. It is a compelling book that has everything one might want: action, emotion sprinkled with a great sense of humor all makes this a book which is very hard to stop reading. I read it in less than 2 days and found that it has all the makings of a best seller. I can’t wait for the next episode of this series.
A great science fiction book. I really enjoyed reading it and was very curious to see what happens next. A real page-turner. For me, it is a perfect combination of adventure and romance. I can't wait for the sequel.
The author does an amazing job taking you through this emotional journey. I enjoyed the scenery as it was so vivid it felt as if I were there! I recommend this book to all readers!
