Yuyuko Takemiya (竹宮 ゆゆこ Takemiya Yuyuko) is a Japanese writer of light novels. Takemiya debuted in September 2004 with her light novel series Watashitachi no Tamura-kun (Our Tamura-kun) which first appeared in the autumn 2004 issue of Dengeki hp Special, a special edition version of Dengeki hp. That same month, Takemiya worked on the scenario for the bishōjo game Noel by FlyingShine (also known for creating Cross Channel).

Following the completion of Watashitachi no Tamura-kun, Takemiya began her best-known series, Toradora!, which she declared to be complete in April 2010 after ten volumes and three spin-off books. The first book of her next series, Golden Time, was Dengeki Bunko's 2000th published light novel. Takemiya launched the manga series Evergreen with artist Akira Kasukabe on July 19, 2011 in ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Daioh Genesis quarterly magazine.

I have to say that there were parts of this particular installment that dragged a bit more than I was expecting. While I'm not opposed to seeing the school life and shenanigans of the characters, this time it felt like it caused the A-Plot to really feel lost or forgotten at times, which I didn't appreciate. None of their school event B-Plot was bad, it just felt like it overtook the entire light novel, and wasn't what I was particularly interested in in this instance.

The A-Plot deals with Taiga's dad. He shows up looking to reconnect with her and Ryuuji does his best to encourage this. The book makes no secret about the fact he's coming from a rather selfish point in his motivations, projecting onto Taiga's situation since he's never met his own father, and his mother has lost her connection with her family as a result of keeping Ryuuji after carrying her pregnancy through to term. It's also very clear about the fact Taiga is torn about this, and Minori disapproves, a fact that shocks Ryuuji and causes a rift between them. Events unfold from there, and I do appreciate the way the book tries its best to examine a complex situation of an absent and unreliable parent from different viewpoints. Additionally, I love whenever this series continues to point to the ways in which Ryuuji and Taiga are continuing to develop feelings for each other, no matter how much they both may want to deny it.

No volume:

Toradora! Vol. 5
Rating: 8.5/10
"By the time they found it, the stain had turned into something that would never disappear. It turned into a stain that even Ryuuji couldn't get rid of."
In this installment we get our most intimate view of Ryuuji's character so far. Similarly, Minori and Taiga's parts show us their dynamic in a light we haven't seen before, and shows us it's more complicated than what we previously assumed. Although the story is still light hearted and the characters just as much so, we begin to see the serious sides of these usually goofy individuals. In short, we get a peek under the masks.
Other than that, the writing in this chapter is my favorite up to this point. It's great to see minor characters like Noto, Yuri, Kihara, etc. take part in the story and exist as real people rather than just to support the main cast.

"Even if you fell, you had to continue on with your life. That
was because no matter what happended, no matter how hard it
got, no matter whether it hurt, even if you were betrayed, even if
you thought it was over, even then, as long as you were alive, you
had to get up like this. You had to start walking again. No matter
how many times you fell, even if you couldn´t stand, even if your
strength was gone, even then, you had to start walking. Whether
you were crying or smiling, you had to walk your own path with
your own two feet.
That was what living was."

The cultural festival episode, but one rather different from most. No cafe. No haunted house. Never before was the festival such a battle. Taiga's father also shows up, showing us a bit more about Taiga's circumstances and generating a somewhat unexpected conflict in the group.

The over-the-top somewhat surreal things happening are back and it was rather funny. Good romance need a bit of drama, and while the conflict at times felt a bit forced it did not dominate the book. All in all, a very good addition to the series.

Best one so far

Toradora is picking up steam. The story in this volume is ridiculously funny, and heartwarming too. These high schoolers shoot from deepest self loathing to ecstasy and back again, as they all try their best to face their problems head on. Such courage, such pathos; it is inspiring. I’m cheering my loudest for all of them.

This was an emotional volume. The pain that both of the main characters feel from having absent fathers breaks my heart.

*The more I read the light novels, the more that I realize a lot of scenes are cut or are shortened in the manga. I recommend reading the light novels if you’re stuck between the two.

Better than the previous volume for sure, we're dealing with Taiga's dad AND the mandatory-for-school-romcoms cultural festival! It was a roller coaster of emotions, hopes and pro-wrestling and I liked the ride. There was some nice emotional development in this volume, more subtle than the previous ones. On to the next one~

So much more emotion packed into this volume than the anime, and the anime had a lot. Though the light novel came first, I think watching the anime and then reading the light novel for this series add so much more to the story. You see the little hints and foreshadowing so much better.

This was just a spectacular piece of fiction.

I already knew this series was very good at handling the emotional beats that would have just been melodrama in lesser stories, but this part seriously needs a warning for people with heart conditions, pregnancy, pre-existing childhood traumas, nervous disorders, or an overt susceptibility to the woobiness of fictional characters.

Definitely the best one so far, this arc is one of the saddest in Toradora, but so worthwhile when you get to the end of it.
