Lords of Discipline #4

Marked by the Marquess

Rate this book
In this battle of wills, matrimony might be the deadliest game of all…

Gentleman spy, Sinclair, Marquess of Dunkeld, must discover who’s behind the recent unrest in Scotland. But when he’s caught alone with an unmarried woman, a hasty marriage threatens his mission.

Fortunately, his new wife Winnifred is everything Sinclair should want—amiable, practical, and biddable…

Perhaps too biddable.

It’s obvious his new wife is keeping a secret – a secret that keeps her from being completely his, and that is the one thing Sinclair cannot allow.

The daughter of a man of science, Winnifred is practiced in the arts of logic, control … and deception. Her secret is darker than her new husband can imagine. And the consequences of him discovering it could be deadly.

But as Sinclair draws her into a world of raging passions, the tempest gathering within might be the one thing she can’t hide.

When an enemy threatens, Sin and Winnifred will need to trust each other, and themselves, if they want to survive the honeymoon. Can they lose their hearts without losing their lives?

Read this for the #HRReadathon.

Scottish Marquess accidentally compromises a woman doing a science experiment. He is also a spy trying to uncover some Scottish rebels causing problems.

They have to marry. He falls head over heals and she is more reserved. He needles her and pulls out her emotions. It is very beautiful.

This was sexy and raw and beautiful.

The steam was very good but I just couldn’t connect with either main characters. I didn’t care for the secondary plot; it made the book longer than I thought was necessary. If the book had just focused on the romance, I probably would have enjoyed it more. On the bright side, the hero falls in love first and says it first.

When you suddenly have a gift of 2 hours in the morning to indulge in a steaming cup of coffee and a bit of Kindle-porn, what a nice treat this story was. I had read another earlier tale that was sweet, but this 1 was a tad better. The H/h really worked though their supposed need to marry on practically page 3 rang a bit false. These books are touted as slightly D/s or BDSM...which they are not. Here, the H says fuck and pussy in his growly way often, and the h lets down her hair with a lot of claw marks and slaps. Not my cuppa, but it was interesting enough that my coffee got cold. Still, the politics in the story were a snooze-fest, and the bad guys were token.

When the H compromises the h, he's happy with their forced marriage. She's not gentry and struggles to find her place with his family and friends. It's an interesting setting with spies and insurrection and the h trying to fit in and often failing. He loves her but she doesn't trust herself to lower her barricades. It's well written, good plot balanced with steamy scenes.

Sinclair, Marquis of Dunkeld, is determined to discover who’s behind the recent unrest in Scotland. But when he’s caught alone in a cellar with an unmarried woman, a hasty marriage threatens his mission. The daughter of a botanist, Winnifred is practiced in the arts of logic but she does hide some secrets. Maintaining her façade in her wild and treacherous new home is trial enough, but the storm of emotions Sinclair awakens in her might be the one thing she can’t control.
This is the fourth book in the series & it could easily be read on its own. It does feature the characters from the earlier books & also Summerset the only remaining bachelor & I can’t wait for him to meet his match. Sin & Winnifred are so well matched both in & out of the bedroom, I loved how their relationship grew & deepened. The book does contain a few sizzling scenes but these are part & parcel of the relationship & illustrates how Winnifred grows & gains confidence & her self esteem. The pace of the book was very good & I was drawn in from the beginning & enthralled until the last page. A story of spies, treason & of course romance – I loved it
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Winifred and Sinclair (Sin)

The espionage subplot is really interesting.

I loved that the meet/cute happened in the first few pages. AWESOME 👌

This book is really odd to me.
I can't really relate to either character separately or together. They seem one dimensional. I understand Winifred's fear of being sent away but I don't feel it. I don't feel why Sinclair's preference for rough sex appeals to him. I don't know why a woman, a logical woman who runs experiments would have such an irrational fear of being sent away after Sinclair says he would never do such a thing. And honestly her love of science and botany seems lukewarm at best.

I guess I don't buy their relationship 🤷. Everything is just meh. No layers to anything at 127 pgs so far. I don't feel any intimacy or warmth between the characters. They haven't spent much quality time together so far.

I'm glad they're happy with what they have, but I don't envy it, they seem a bit broken and Ill- mannered. Example: I don't think it was appropriate for him to take her letters and read them without asking, and I don't think she should be slapping him silly to vent. Their behavior is kind of juvenile. It's off-putting to me as a reader. So odd. He goes and buys her all this stuff for a lab without asking her what she would need in a lab. Why would he not want to do that WITH her? And spend that time with her? So odd. And she never actually uses it for anything.

Honestly, I think both of them are more trouble than they're worth. No intimacy or closeness. They did seem closer at the end.
They were just not very likable people to me.
I didn't really care at all.

New to me Author.
Nice cover.
Reading 📚 about Sinclair's friends 'romance ' doesn't have any appeal at this time.
Wouldn't read again.
Unlikely to continue series.

Admittedly I DNF this book (45%) so I was a little reluctant to dish out stars, but here we are….

I’ll start with the positives.

I really liked that both MCs had to deal with hiding who they were. Winnie more than Sin, but I like imperfect MCs and even though Sins faults were minor, he did have them. The two of them seemed to be on little journeys of self-discovery and I dig that. No one’s perfect.

The steam in this book was level 7 out of 10 - and well written. One unique thing about this book was, it nice to see the hero reeeeeally work to please his woman. She didn’t go from innocent naïve women to wanton sex kitten with the stroke of his finger. She fought her desire tooth and nail and she was confused by her bodies gradual need for his touch. When it was over, she was very much like “Ok thank you, goodnight!” leaving the hero feeling a little slighted and bewildered. It was hilarious.

Now the negatives. What was Winnie’s problem? Ok, ok…we find out eventually, but honestly it was really confusing at first. If you read this, you’ll know what I am talking about. There ended up being too many problems and I think the author should have just picked one issue for Winnie to have and ran with that. It came across disjointed and eventually I got tired of trying to figure Winnie out.

The last issue is just a personal preference, but Sin was a beta and I either love Betas (see Book of Love) or they annoy me. The author made Sin so bloody understanding and if I wanted to shake Winnie then Sin should have wanted to shake her! He was patient when I wanted him to push her more. He was calm when I wanted him to yell. I'm sure if I had stuck with the book Sin would have finally snapped, but his patience was making me impatient, damnit! This was also a forced marriage and he accepted his new bride like he had been courting her for years and it just felt… phony? Either way the book didn’t work for me as I had hoped it would, so onto the next.

I give 4 stars as I really liked it.
Compromised in a very innocent manner, Winnifred soon finds herself married to Sinclair, Marquess of Dunkeld and on her way to his estate in Scotland. There are no remonstrations between the couple, though Sin's last bachelor friend Summerset does not hold back with disparaging comments.
Quickly the pair discovers they are not only physically well matched in height, but share a similar sexual appetite. The bed scenes are of just the right length, neither abbreviated or too excessive.
Overall the story is well balanced between Sinclair's investigation into a possible uprising against the Union, the newlywed's getting better acquainted with each other, and their coming to terms with their own self-doubts.
I liked that the book is not plagued by endless thoughts of the characters, but moves quickly with natural dialogue and actions as well as some humor regarding a badger.
I read an advance copy; this is my voluntarily given honest opinion.

I've read several other books in the Lords of Discipline series and found them 4 and 5 star reads. This one dragged a bit and had some significant editing problems. What I liked: in a nice change up on standard tropes, it's the heroine with a walled heart who only realizes she loves the hero at the dangerous climax of the book. Also, Scotland. Not muck kilt wearing, though.

Marked by the Marquess , the fourth book in Lords of Discipline series, surprised me a little.

It’s once again well written, emotional, and romantic story, but compared to the previous books it seems… tamer somehow.

I’m not sure if it’s because of the character’s personalities or the theme of BDSM play, but the author seems to pull back on the heat level a little. Of course the story and romance is still so wonderful, and characters really well developed.

I even think, Winnifred might be my second favorite heroine in the series. She was very reserved in her feelings, almost suppressing any strong emotions, because of fear. Interestingly enough, I found her incredible strong, but also… fragile.

And that’s where Sin’s resolve and support shines. I love he was the one who realized his feeling first, we need more pining heroes! Dunkeld is portrayed through the series as a silent but slightly hot-headed character, and I don’t see him here like that at all. His “beastly-ness” is not as wild as one could expect. In a way, he and Winnifred are both quite reserved in their feelings, but in a different way. Sin doesn’t feel as terrified of his feelings and expressing them. Although he might be hurt by his wife not reciprocating his love right away, he never pressured her, not really. His patience and support was incredible caring. I really loved that theme in the story.

As for chemistry between them, it’s different from the other stories. I mean, all the couples in the series have a different flavor to them, but Sin and Winifred – surprisingly – seem the most subdued from the all. It was a little surprised, as – excluding fire play – foreplay involving light choking or slapping seemed the most… well, wild to me. But the sex scenes in Marked by the Marquess were always incredible emotional and sweet to me. Fragile, despite appearing the most fierce.

The thing I kind of missed in this one was banter between Sin and his friends, although the few times Summerset made an appearance were wonderful as always.

Sin and Win

Historical romance with light kink: biting, choking, wrestling. All consensual, in marriage. Steam 5/5. Strong language: negligible.
A fun regency romp with mystery, spying, and romance. Interesting storyline in that this innocent compromised into marriage couple gets along well but the H falls in love with the h long before she reciprocates. Win's mother had mental health issues and she was traumatized as a child when her mother was taken away to Bedlam and subsequently died. She has always held her emotions ruthlessly in check. It takes Sin's love and patience to set her free. All amongst A plot to destroy the union between England and Scotland.

5 ⭐ I loved it. I’ll revisit it like an old friend. This book is moving right into my favorites category. I would recommend it to everyone, even people that don’t ask. I’ll one click this author’s work in the future.
4 ⭐ A great read. I’ll probably reread again when feeling nostalgic. It was enjoyable, not portable magic. I would recommend it.
3 ⭐ I liked it. It was a nice way to pass the time. I doubt I’ll reread it. I’d recommend it to someone asking for a specific genre. Thanks for the memories.
2 ⭐ I completed the Herculean task of finishing this book. At times, it felt like I was Prometheus and the suffering would never end. It just wasn’t for me but I applaud the author for their effort.
1 ⭐ I couldn’t finish this book. How do I put this? It’s not me, it’s you.

Opposites are two sides of one heart

Son's looking for a bottle of wine in his host's wine cellar. Winnifred is looking for a particular vintage for her father's friend (and checking out the taste of another bottle of wine to see if the ash from a volcano on the other side of the world reached Europe--she's almost finished the bottle in her quest for an answer!)
They get caught, not stealing wine, but being in the wine cellar together, even though they weren't; so begins the rest of their lives!
Fun and quirky with treasonous plots happening in the background. What could be more entertaining?

Of this series, this book was the best. I really enjoyed both characters and loved watching them grow. The first half of the book, like all of them, is just character development, relationship building and setting up of the plot. I think because this book had the characters together from pretty much the beginning there was more time with them and their relationship while the others there is time apart and going back and forth about if they like/love them or not. These two have no choice in the matter so it has a different feel than the rest of the books.

Good

Winnie is English and daughter to a botanist. While looking for a certain dated wine in the cellar she runs I to Sinclair aka Sin. With being found alone they must wed. Winnie holds back her wit and intelligence due to fear as being labeled as mad like her mother. Once wed and in Scotland her husband demands she be her self and not an obeying mouse of a wife. While married he allows her to keep her science lab and she learns to let her passion free. Maybe even learn to rethink her feeling on being in love. Good book and steamy..

A Great Hero

This was a story well told. I liked it very much how Sin was so in love with Winnie and protected her. There are some steamy scenes that add to Sin's love for Winnie. In some reviews writers lamented this wasn’t a clean novel. Historical Romances were named "Bodice Busters", so if you want a "clean" story don’t read Historical Romances with passionate embraces on the book cover, ok? This story had a smart 19th Century woman portrayed as being loved by her for all of attributes, her intelligence as well.

The characters were fairly likeable and the plot was decent enough. Emphasis on the 'marked' in terms of the sex scenes. There was biting, scratching and some light slapping. I think it was meant to be about the characters letting go with each other. Impressed that Sin was an alpha but not a complete butthead. He was actually rather patient and supportive with Winnifred. The fact that I have to comment on that as being unusual to a typical hero is not great...

There were quite a lot of typos so the editing was sloppy. Overall I didn't love it but it was fine.

Read it for the spice

Who cares about the old spy plot. The down and dirty is delicious. She took my favorite slap and tickle and added a hot brawny red head how can I say no. My favorite trope is giant manly man falling first and then doing the vulnerable emotional bits, and Sin is chef's kiss the perfect example. The plot is a distraction, I don't need the plot. The badger, dogs and his mother were just enough life to give me a break. I don't need idiots and Scottish power plots.

In a series that I have loved, this one didn't work super well for me. I loved the marriage of convenience setup, and the burly Scottish hero and bluestocking heroine, but the spice wasn't as well done was I was expecting. Sinclair has a primal kink, and I don't have a problem with that inherently, but not one time did the couple ever sit down and discuss anything. Not boundaries, not safe words, nothing. And when he pushes his new wife until she fights back, they both seem to enjoy it, but again, literally never discuss it. I could have been all over this one if it had been set up better.

DNFing around 35%. The beginning seemed great, but quickly spiraled into a nothingburger. After the first sex scene, the hero sits up and says to the heroine “we need to talk”. And then it’s the next day. We literally don’t get to see this interaction. It is very briefly mentioned a couple pages later but we need to see these two together, interacting and talking. It bombs any possible chemistry straight to hell.

The book continues like this and is tell, not show. There’s just nothing if interest to keep me reading.

This one had more political intrigue than I normally would prefer in my histroms but it was still very interesting and I loved the main couple, Sinclair, rough and tough but a gentle giant when it came to his wife, Winnie. I love when the pair is forced to marry because they were caught in a compromising position (this one was very innocent actually) and THEN they fall in love after the fact. Sin fell hard and fast and then was the sad Scot waiting for his wife to catch up emotionally. This series has been a delight.

Sexy good times

I enjoyed this story, even the slow reveal of Winifred's tight control over her emotions and demeanor. Sinclair makes a yummy, dominant hero whose roughness in the bedroom doesn't translate to treating women like trash. His devotion and honor are refreshing. I would have given this book a 5-star review but for a consistent sprinkling of grammatical errors which show the author needs to avail herself of a competent proofreader.
