ARC received in exchange for an honest review - thank you!
A bit of a weird second instalment. Basically, Piper discovers four more mates from a rival pack; understandably, her existing mates aren't terribly happy about it. That makes 8 mates total. I'm a firm believer in 5 being the absolute limit for a harem that makes actual sense. Admittedly, May is such a good author that I did actually manage to remember the names and personalities of the 8, but I do think that so many men meant that some of their development was sacrificed.
Also, unfortunately, I definitely like Piper's 4 new mates more than the 4 old ones...
I'll be reading the sequel, but I'm way more excited to read the spinoff series with Maddie.
*Throws my kindle up in the air... and walks away..*
2.5 stars. This series took a turn her at the beginning of book 2.. and I have no clue whats happening anymore.. A pack comes looking for Piper's little sister and Piper instead of turning over Megan decides she will go and make sure this pack is legit. Only for some reason, that the book never freaking explains, 3 dudes aren't enough for this girl. Instead she decides shes drawn to this new pack too. I mean I know Megan is still young but dang.. save someone for her. I will say when it comes to comparing the packs I think I'm a bigger fan of this new pack than the guys from book one. This book was mostly just Piper getting to know these new guys and feeling guilty about leaving her other guys back at home.. And no explanations what so ever as to why this is happening. I wish we could get some splainin really.
Honestly I'm at an empasse.. I don't know whether to push onward to book 3 in the hope of some answers or to just throw in the towel on this series.. I think I'm going to give book 3 a shot and hope someone will make sense of this madness.
3.5 Almost Teetering to 4 Stars Well damn this is a hard one to review especially with so much left hanging in the balance. This book has me thrown from a loop because while it is a continuation of book #1 it feels so separate. And that damn cliff-hanger at the end leaves so much open I need to know what happens. I think whats thrown me the most is that this books consists of the heroine voluntarily leaving her current pack of four, the same four who are her mates. She leaves to stop a slaughter of her mates and to determine the safety of the other pack who wants their 'princess' back, AKA Maddie who is also Piper's sister. The 95% of the book takes place with Piper and this other pack and while there she forms romantic feelings and attachments for four new males there including the alpha. It brings up many questions as to joining the packs, inter-pack relations and the ever present coven threat that just won't seem to go away. It's weird to go from book one with four mates, to this book which adds the addition of four more. So I have to wonder if the next and final book will finally bring the two together and allow everyone to co-exist and also provide a way for Piper and her sister to be together. So what went from a RH of four is now eight. I was engaged throughout the entire book I just felt blinded by the addition of this other pack and honestly never saw it coming, in many ways it's like it's own book. Either way I'm ready for the finale and hope everything can and will worked out for everyone. If anyone can find a way to have the packs join or even finally form an alliance, I imagine it's Piper.
Book 2 kicks off with a fight between Piper's (FMC) Northern Pack (Callum, Kai, Nick & Josh) & their neighbours the Shenandoah Pack (Arthur, Logan, Sebastian & Finn) for Maddie. Except Piper ends up being in the middle of it all when shes lets herself be taken instead of Maddie. Which complicates things for both packs. New Tensions and some sexual ones too. Those ones were off the charts in this book. Im enjoying this series so much. Its a great read in my opinion
The thing about May Dawson’s writing? What you THINK is going on, really isn’t. Book 1 set the stage, but book 2 takes it, flips, stretches it and changes the board completely. New players, old enemies and a plot that gets thicker as the pages stack up. Watch the cliff!
FOUR NEW GUYS TO THE HAREM??!! I'm sorry but that's a FUCK NO from me
This whole thing is just fucking disappointing. I HATE it when RH authors do this. Like the first book gets you all invested in a couple of guys and out of nowhere there's new ppl in the next book? And not one or two but FOUR while the og guys get zero fucking screen time? Wtf did I read the first book for? To waste my time?
I think I might like this a bit more than the first, surprisingly. I'm not crazy about the pack dynamics though. The men in this new pack aren't as close as the first one, and I'm finding it hard to see such big changes in the future. I can see where this is going though, so I'm not sure if I'll continue with the last book or not.
Why must you make me cry so much May?! Every single book, I’m always balling my eyes out for one reason or another! You just know right where to hit! Seriously you’re an absolutely amazing author and I am so glad I found your work!
If you haven't read the first book in this series, STOP! Go back and read it first this book continues shortly after that one ends.
In the last book we learn that Piper is a Shifter Princess as is her sister Maddie. Their adoptive father was a witch whose coven stole them from their parents and bound their power and in Piper's case her ability to shift as well.
Piper is the Princess of Callum's pack, she is also the fated mate of Callum, Josh, Nick and Kai. Right now, they are all living together, including Maddie in the house outside of town. They are all training physically and Callum is working on breaking the rest of the curse put on Piper.
Piper's also having a recurring nightmare of drowning, neither Maddie nor her can swim so it's particularly frightening. Kai takes Piper shopping for a bathing suit but they play some arcade games and have lunch first. As she's getting dressed after trying the last suit, Kai bursts into the dressing room. There are wolves in the mall, they are not their pack, and they need to get away.
Kai makes it possible for Piper to get in the truck and to relative safety to call Callum, but she returns for him after the call. They get away just as Callum is pulling in, Kai jumps into the back of Callum's truck and they rush home.
Things are tense, the other pack has many more wolves and they really won't have a chance in an attack. They are preparing to protect Piper and Maddie anyway. What happens when that attack comes is quite the surprise.
They guys aren't pleased that Piper went with the Alpha of the other pack but he understands why she did it. She would protect Maddie with her life, against anyone, even Maddie's parents.
Maddie doesn't remember her parents even though she was older when she was taken. The witches had altered her memories just like they did Piper.
When Piper finds the pack lives on an island, she finds herself wondering if her nightmare is more premonition than just a dream. Only time will tell.
There is much to learn about this pack, it's large and there is descent. Not everyone approves of the way their Alpha, Arthur handled things and resent Piper's presence.
Piper has two allies right from the start, Finn and Sebastian, they are twins and at first, she had mistaken Sebastian for Finn. Authur's beta Logan is their brother, so they seem to get away with quite a bit.
One thing Authur makes clear, is Maddie isn't his fated mate, but would be for the next generation. Piper makes more friends here as she learns of how this pack got so large. Caroline and Fiona are best friends but only Caroline was turned voluntarily. It wasn't Arthur it was the previous Alpha, his brother, who perpetrated those events.
Through a series of events, Arthur learns Piper can't shift and what they are doing to remove the spells. It seems the most effective way to do that is to kill the witches who set it on her.
We learn much about pack princesses in this one as Piper starts having those same feelings for Arthur, Logan, Finn and Sebastian as she does for her Blissford Pack.
It's quite the journey in this book, from enemies to adversaries, these two packs even though one far outnumbers the other find that path to peace. The Coven isn't going to sit around and wait for them to do them all in. War is coming.
There is plenty of action, suspense, romance and sizzle in this book, I couldn't put it down and I am about to start the third book in this trilogy.
"I wish I could be special for you." "Don't you worry about being special, just be mine." book 1 pg. 134
"I'll kill anyone that threatens us. So you have have peace." book 2 pg. 56
**Review is shared for entire series**
Overall, I loved this series. The plot was great, most of the characters were great, the love story was swoon worthy at times. I did give this series 4 stars overall because of this. But there were some things that were lacking.
If you are looking for a shifter romance, with MANY mates, insta-love, and a damaged yet strong FMC that brings her mates together, this book is perfect for you.
The biggest thing being that the series (the first book especially) seemed super rushed. I wished it had a little more depth. Despite that, the author does do a good job of not having any huge plot holes, making the relationships feel real, and the plot does feel complete.
***Spoilers Ahead***
I also found some aspects of the FMC's relationships annoying. Kai is an assh*le throughout the entire series and literally at the end she is still saying he hates her but loves her more. Like, talk about the bare minimum.... And Piper is suchhhh a pushover with all arguments but with Kai it is super annoying. Nick and Piper's relationship is pretty much non-existent. In the first book, he is barely there, in the second book of course the Northern pack is barely with Piper, and in the third they are literally apart the entire time. I loved him but he felt like an extra character. Logan is literally so confusing. He was a complete assh*le out of NOWHERE for like one scene in the second book, and then this strong man is completely insecure in the third book. It just felt like his changed what his personality was like every other scene. Arthur deserved to grovel, and it never happened which was just a huge disappointment.
That being said, Callum, Josh, Sebastian, and Finn are perfect book boyfriends, lovelyyy.
The other thing that just kind of made me shake my head and skim was the sex scenes. Especially in the third book. This is not the first series I've read where someone has been able to heal their mate using sex, but I feel like there should be another way when it's written like the third book was. I know it's a paranormal book, it's not supposed to be believable. But a girl getting down and dirty while her sister and some of her loves are possibly hurt or dead is just... too much. And pretty much all the sex scenes are during that time so it was just weird.
I didnt see a lot of the twists in book 2 coming, which is always fun, and I thought the majority of book 2 was great. In book 2 we get to see Piper and her pack bond and grow in strength, just to have it rip out from under them. Piper plays a martyr but then ends up finding more than she bargained for with the other pack. Won't give anything away, but I loved seeing Piper with the different guys in the 2nd pack, they are drastically different than the guys from book 1. The fight with the witches is far from over, they won't stop til they get to Piper and/or Maddie, and they don't care how many wolves or humans die in the process of getting essentially their power battery haha. Loved all the new guys, they each are traumatized, each bring something different to the table, in addition with the guys from the original pack. So much steam and adorable moments despite the plot being tense and some tough moments to overcome.
For me, some things with the flow didnt match what was done in book. I thought it was well planned out, flow was fab, and we had enough detail and explanation that it wasn't overwhelming or not enough. It was just right. Book 2 unfortunately had some scenes that made my head spin because I was confused how they got to that position and had to rewind my audiobook many times to make sure I didnt miss something. I think an example is with Logan. Like in one moment he is being flirty, they seem to be going in the right direction and then its mentioned he stopped talking to her for a couple days and she is pissed and he growls and yells at her. Like I don't know if that was to keep up a charade, but I was confused why he starting acting that way and why Piper was overreacting. Also, how quickly Piper started going all hot and heavy with the guys from the 1st pack, seemed too soon. She went from kissing to going all the way real quick. If it was because of the mating/pack bond, it needed to be explained more.
Narration gets the same comments I gave for book 1 that the female narrator was fabulous, love her work. The male narrator needs to be less breathy, it takes away from the performance. Overall they do a great job with all the distinguishing inflections and tones for the different guys and situations. I already started book 3, the build-up is fantastic in terms of the plot. Book 3 is gonna be 🔥🔥🔥
The characters somewhat change up in this book. It still follows the same GMC, Piper, but she sacrifices herself to go to a neighbouring pack after they come to their lands to attack them, trying to get to Maddie. She said she'd go with them to be sure the pack is safe, then she'll allow Maddie to go with them. While at the new pack, she starts feeling things for some of the men there. She's confused and torn because she knows she loves the men of her pack and shouldn't be feeling anything for anyone else.
The only thing that irked me really about this book was something that happened early on and didn't even affect the book.
(**VERY MINOR SPOILER**) Josh and Piper both got together for the first time at the end of the first book, and it was relatively sweet. Callum also has a "sweet" one on one first time with her in this book. Nothing happens with Kai yet, but it bothers me that Nick didn't have a private moment with her. Instead, his first time with her was a bit of a rushed MFM scene with Josh. I feel he deserved better than that, but that's just me.
There's still the occasional spelling mistake or writing error in this book that any good editor would have caught, but not as many as in the first book. The story is pretty awesome, though, and I'm about to jump into the final book now!
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Piper, Kai, Callum Josh Nick Sebastian Arthur Logan Finn ---------------------------------- What happens? Piper's pack is attacked in a bid for them to take Maddie. Piper sacrifices herself to save her pack in order to bide time before Maddie has to go back to this other pack, her true pack. When she is there she meets four other men she feels the lore for, something that should be impossible outside of her pack. Final thoughts I thought this was a good addition to an interesting series and I'm curious with the resolution of this series. Although I kind of remember all the names, it did take me a few seconds each time when I was adding them above, the newbies are Alpha of the other pack; Arthur he is similar to Callum so not sure he brings much if I'm frank, next is Beta of the other pack Logan and his half brothers Omega twin brothers Finn and Seb. The only new character personalities in the four added are Seb and Finn. They're jokesters or rather Finn is and Seb seems to keep Finn out of trouble for the most part. Would I read again?: Yes Would I read this author again?: Yes
This book picks up a few months from where the first left off and it was a very smooth time transition. The benefit of it being a series is there was very little background needing to be rehashed but the scale of it did make itself feel like a standalone.
Piper spends most of her time in another pack-mainly to save her current pack-so we learn more about the lore and rules of pack life.
The RH aspect does grow to include a possible 8 mates now rather than 4 and somehow each male is completely different! We see Piper really struggle to make a difference and make things right/work. We also see the boys start to understand how to behave in a working relationship and trust everyone that’s involved.
The twists and turns in this book are fantastic and there are quite a few times that I was holding my breath. Again the sex scenes in the book are done with a finesse that doesn’t make them tacky. There is less physicality in the book than book 1 (which was to be expected as she’s in a rival pack)-but a great amount of flirting.
I can not wait to read book three as I’m on the edge of my seat!
There is an ominous meeting between a "dead man" and a wolf pack in the prologue. Then the story picks up a few weeks after the end of Book 1 with Piper, Josh, Kai, Nick, and Callum at Blissford House. Piper is unsuccessfully treated to remove the witches' spells. It is a painful experience, physically and mentally. Pain is balanced by wild, passionate sex with Josh and Nick. Watch for the occasional change in Point of View. Then Piper is made a "guest" of the Atlantic pack to evaluate their suitability for Maddie. It is Maddie's true pack. Both packs cooperate to kill the witches who stole Piper's power. Some others in the Atlantic pack become attracted to Piper, and vice versa, resulting in so hot, passionate sex; while some want her dead. And the witches want her back. Tensions build to a climax to end in a cliffhanger leading to Book 3. Have it ready!
In this fantasy world, the heroine, Piper, now knows and understands her history with her father and her connection to the werewolves. However, her "sister" has a different origin story and her family is coming for her. Piper gives her self up as "tribute" until she can decide that it is a safe place for the young girl. Again, she encounters another family of 4 men, this time within a larger pack, and finds a connection with them (again mutual). This story centers around getting to understand the new pack dynamics and encouraging her new family and her "old" family to get along and be OK with their connections.
The acceptance or not of each of them to the situation again provides some of the tension, while the rest is provided political posturing within the pack. Additionally, this book is rated MA.
This was a disappointing 2nd installment to the series.
Piper and her pack come up against her sisters original pack. Piper sacrifices herself to them under the guise of investigating them to make sure they're a good pack for her sister.
Instead, Piper finds several new mates. Including Arthur the Alpha of the pack. Arthur is a dick the whole time, and repeatedly says he's going to take Piper over his knee when she asks legitimate questions and he's being an elusive jackass. It's supposed to be enticing but it's used so much I just found it cringe. I ended up skipping over the spicy scenes because of it.
The coven that cursed Piper is still out there, and it's skimmed over until we'll beyond halfway through the book. Suddenly there's a few assassination attempts and the focus of the story shifts.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
3 & 1/2 stars rounded up. Definitely a unique story being told, enough to keep my interest. The flow is pretty good in this book. Book 2 is a fairly good continuation with the series. Lots of things need to all line up to make this all work out in book 3- the final book in the series, but it has potential. Not sure how the whole thing will work out, so it's definitely unpredictable. I kinda feel that I like the 4 new guys better than the 4 original guys at this point, though I'm not sure how this will all resolve for the 8 guys. The one thing that really hurts this series so far is the editing/proof-reading, which has way too many mistakes to be a published book. It was enough of a distraction to hurt the star-rating and enjoyment factor for me.
I enjoyed this book as much, or more than the first. It's angsty and full of conflict, but it doesn't go over the top. I love these new guys and am very intrigued by how they might iron out the hostilities between Piper's pack and this new one. Honestly I'm intrigued by everything involved in this book. The title is very accurate as this book is all about the pack dynamics, while the first was all about Piper's identity and freedom. This one ends on a cliffhanger, so I NEED to read book three!
This second installment is arguably better than the first full of more sexy shifter men and exciting action. Bring on the next one!
Piper, the newly discovered and partially recovered pack princess, has started to settle in to her new normal with Callum, Josh, Nick, and Kai, her new yet old family and pack. As the story progresses a fight between packs breaks out, a sacrifice is made, and learning the truth seems to evade them all. May Dawson’s Their Shifter Princess: Pack War is a thrilling why choose romance that leaves the reader hanging with a dangling ending. I am eagerly moving on to Their Shifter Princess: Coven's Revenge to see where she takes Piper and her growing harem of men next.
I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
I love this series. May Dawson has quickly become one of my favorite authors after I stumbled upon her Wild Angels - Lilith and her harem series I’ve made it a point to stay up to date with her releases and the Their Shifter Princess series does not disappoint! The characters are developing and advancing as we continue to learn more about the Shifter community and the events around what happened to the pack all those years ago. I can’t wait for book 3 or to read anything else from this author!
Loved this trilogy. Really liked getting to know Piper and Maddie too. I thought having some many mates would be too much but it’s more about them all excepting each other and working together to fight the coven. I was drawn to this series because it was only 3 books. After that I usually lose interest and skip to the end. My only con was that I wanted more on how they all lived after in an epilogue. I would have liked to see what happens further down the line but not 10 years later in Their Shifter Academy (Maddie’s story).
I loved everything about this book and just couldn't put it down, fantastically written with stunning and captivating characters, Multi layers of sub plots that are easily followed and wonderful action with romance. Piper continue's to grow as the MC and becomes more endearing the further we get into this storey, The new wolves add another dynamic and i cant wait to see how the two packs combine in book 3. A must read for so many reasons. I am sure you will love these books as much as I did.
In pack wars Piper must protect not only Maddie but her pack from both wolves and witches. Piper really grows in this book we learn more about her past and learn more about each of her 4 men. We also meet a rival pack who despite herself piper feels drawn to especially Logan Fin Seb and their Alpha Auther but where does that leave callum Josh Nick and Kia ? Full of twist and turns love and lust with an ending that leaves you eager for book 3
Good continuation. Piper allows herself to go with the Atlantic pack in order to keep Maddie with her guys. Piper is confused when she feels a similar kind of pull to some of the other pack males.
I liked most of the new characters and the continuation of the overarching plot was good. I just didn't connect with all of the guys. It would be more interesting to have Piper meet more males and then find the ones that she is drawn to...not just the next 4 guys she meets in the new pack.
This could *and should* have been a few chapters, not a whole book. Destroyed all of the build up from the first book, pacing was ground to a halt. Doubling the harem before we’d been settled with the first 4 guys was incredibly jarring, especially since the first 4 guys are completely sidelined. I’ll be reading the next one, sunk cost and all that, but yeah. This wasn’t great, really disappointing after the first built up to what feels like no payoff
3.75 Part of me wanted to rate this a 4, but some technical things are holding me up.
The men from the former book are sparsely visited in this book. I didn't miss them as much as I thought I would, which I think is because the new men are replicas of the old?
There is also very little plot progression in this book. Yes, they take out some more of the witches and piper gets a few memories back (like 2), but this book was really just meeting the second half of her harem.
