She broke the rules. Now he sets the consequences.
Lera crossed the line when she disobeyed River’s orders and went over the Academy wall. Now River wants Lera gone—and Coal is just the officer to make her quit.
For Coal, disciplining a wayward cadet is a matter of routine—--but he may be in over his head with this fiery student. Leralynn is far stronger than she looks, and with her eerily familiar chocolate eyes and maddening curves, she’s bringing demons to the surface... demons that Coal thought long buried.
But when a rainstorm threatens to destroy the Lera’s last hope for restoring her males’ memories, the battle of wills between her and Coal turns to war.
CRIME AND PUNISHMENT is the second episode in the GREAT FALLS ACADEMY novella series, featuring the same reverse-harem cast as Alex Lidell’s internationally bestselling POWER OF FIVE series. (Reading the POWER OF FIVE novels is not necessary to enjoy GREAT FALLS ACADEMY.)
Alex Lidell is the Amazon Breakout Novel Awards finalist author of THE CADET OF TILDOR (Penguin) and several Amazon Top 100 Kindle Bestsellers, including the POWER OF FIVE romance series. She is an avid horseback rider who believes in eating dessert first. She writes as both Alex Lidell and A.L. Lidell.
Gave up when I realised it was taking me a week to read a 27k-word novella. Not sure exactly what's wrong, but nothing about it was holding my interest. It didn't help that the 'punishment' mentioned in the title definitely isn't the erotic kind.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Lera is really in a hot mess now. After the first book the guys are still under the wonky spell making it necessary for her to play along but time is running out. She has a punishment for sneaking off the grounds and few more twists thrown in as well. I have to say that is rocky emotional stuff going on as they all fight the magic in some way or another whether they realize it or not. Things are really starting to get twisted and I cannot wait to see where we go next. A fantastic addition to this amazing serial series. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
I absolutely loved this second episode in this follow-up series to the Power of Five (PoF) fantasy reverse harem series. (I do highly recommend that you read PoF before starting Great Falls Academy (GFA) as these episodes mean so much more if you know the background of these characters and their love). These episodes are like TV episodes (long ones) and this second one had so much great stuff with my favorite hero, Coal, that I was squealing happily like a little girl. Usually, when one of a story's central plot points involves a form of memory loss I personally find it kind of meh, but I have very, very much enjoyed how it is used in GFA - it has added such an interesting series of encounters and meanings to all of the characters' interactions and feelings, and has really been the gift that keeps on giving. Just like my favorite TV shows, I cannot wait to read more!
Lera is still trying to make any connection with her mates. With some of them, it will be easier and with some, it will be much harder. I love how each guy is at different stag with her and has so different thoughts than the other guys. That makes this story even more real in that space. And River... Ugh, he was always so so like an ox! I hope next novella will have Shade more featured.
I can’t figure out what I think about this series. On one hand, I love amnesia plots, fae, and magic, and this book has all of that. On the other hand, I have a lot of the same issues with this spin-off series that I did with the original – primarily regarding characterization and just not being able to hold my interest.
On the plus side, this book is very well written, the side characters are interesting, this book kicks the steam up a notch, and did I mention the amnesia part of this yet? ‘Cause amnesia plots are my jam.
But I also had a lot of complaints.
The males in this series embody the Four Male Archetypes in RH: the fun one, the stern leader, the troubled one, and the kind, thoughtful one that is always forgotten. Out of these, I typically prefer the stern one or the troubled one, but in this series they’re my least favorite, so of course they get the most attention.
I think part of my frustration stems from the fact that they always cross a line. With everyone, but especially with Lera. Their confusion regarding her somehow lends itself to them paying her especially harsh attention, and with the current power imbalance in the book – not to mention Lera’s lack of desire to fight back – it doesn’t sit well with me.
Then there’s Lera’s characterization. I was really hoping that this series would correct some of its mistakes with her from the Power of Five. While the four males here have lived exponentially longer than her and have much more experience, in this situation Lera is the only one with knowledge of her past and what is actually happening. Not to mention knowledge of what she’s physically capable of as a fae. With that in mind, my hope was that she would really step up and show her growth.
Maybe that will happen in later books, but right now she’s still the same as she was in the first series. Really, I just want to see her actually kick some ass. Her emotional development was beyond what I was expecting, but I want to see her flourish on the battlefield or with strategy.
Otherwise, Tye and Shade have been a delight to read about. At the very least, they’re not unnecessarily cruel with Lera.
My plan is to continue this series, but I hope that the things I mentioned above are resolved.
Love this series and this installment didn't disappoint.
Lera and Tye face punishment for breaking curfew. Tye at the hands of River. Lera at Cole's hands. Cole is sadistic brutal.
Lera breaks, under Cole's punishment. Her need to get to the tablet and hopefully bring back her males memories out weighing her need to stay at the Academy. The storm destroys even that hope. Shade's wolf offers her some comfort. Then Cole finds her.
Cole is filled with anger and remorse. He is relieved at finding Lera safe. Anger, fear, and attraction, quickly ignite between them. Lera's mind knows he is not her Cole right now, her senses don't care.
Facing Shade in the infirmary, him calling her cub, and seeing her as nothing more than a patient, cuts deeper then the loss of the rest. He is was her first and her rock.
Facing Rivers cold anger, while Tye tries to protect her, she calls him out. River telling her he wants her gone, giving her the option of a brutal punishment, one that locks her in the past or resignation. Lera knows they need her, a quint can't survive separated. She will endure to protect them, even while she is questioning wether magic is what really holds them together, the quint bond and the mate bond.
Fast paced, intense and steamy. Ends in an expected cliffhanger. I can't help but wonder what it will do to Lera's males if or when they regain their memories.
This series is an automatic buy for me. I had already pre ordered this book, but was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy, and can't wait for the next book.
I will be honest, it took me a long time to read this continuation series after the first one because I wasn't really sure where the story was going to lead and then I saw that the author was going to try and do episodes like a tv show which is an interesting concept but at what cost to the story as a whole? The writing is very good overall, there is no doubt about that but I feel like we are being given the run around because the group was sent out on mission but we are being sidetracked by the current problem at hand - I don't want to give any spoilers but how many more episodes do we have to endure the guys not having their memory and with the latest development at the end of this book it doesn't look good. The book is basically in Lera's head most of the time and circles around the memory loss - besides a few things happening here and there which aren't many, just sex, beatings, and the prophecy there isn't much of a concise story. I need the memory issue to be wrapped up and move on to the real subject, because this is basically just a filler and we are beating a dead horse already - it's getting old and it's only episode 2 - how long can you harp on the same subject??? Ok I am done with that rant but furthermore, if I had to pay for this I would have been very upset. I will continue to read the series but I feel like if you don't read the Great Falls Academy you won't miss much if you had ended with the first series.
Lera broke the rules and now she is to be punished. This cadet evokes feelings in him that he doesn't understand and doesn't like. And he's not the only one who feels this way. River wants her gone and is trusting Coal to make it happen. But Leralynn is no average cadet which Coal quickly discovers. Their battle of wills becomes deadly even as Lera loses her last hope for restoring her mates memories.
Again, I am so torn. The writing is excellent, the narration by Victoria Mei on the audiobook is perfect. The story is addictive. I can't stop once I start. This serial was too short but I am assuming that was how this particular story arc went; some may be a little longer, others shorter. What I don't like is the lack of story movement. I stated previously that I do not like amnesia tropes. I was expecting a few more little breakthroughs (the guys glimpsing their true past, getting unexplained feelings, etc.). As this story progressed I even hoped for Coal to regain his memory. Nope. I can hold on a little longer. What I was not expecting was the pure cruelty of River and Coal. A bully romance is one thing, abuse is another. Coal crossed a line into abuse that could have easily been deadly. River exacted punishment in a way beneath him that will haunt Lera even if it wasn't to her. I was disappointed that these men showed sides of themselves that were less than the men we knew from the prior series. Redemption is needed. I need more. I need to know that these are still the same honorable, good men Lera fell in love with. The men that deserve her.
Soooo River is a a word that rhymes with Nick. I mean he was always kind of that way sometimes even more so than Coal, but got damn. It’s like on a thousand since he has connection to Lera.
All the same I still love all the guys. And then Lera and Coal happen. I was reading and silently going yaaaasss!!!!! Was so happy for that. I am very happy to find out what will become of Princess Katita because she is rather spoiled and territorial of Tye which is interesting since she has technically only known him 4 days I think but because of the veil magic she feels like she has known him longer.
Arusha is Gavriel’s neice. Which I was not ready for. But it makea sense. And then all that work on her part to get the key back to Lera for in the end it to be destroyed anyway. I almost pulled my hair out reading that River shattered it and put it in the fire. I really hope Autumn or someone from Lunos will feel that shift in magic being destroyed and come investigate because at this point even if the quaint get all their memories back and are able to somehow circumvent the veil magic they have no way how right now.
Well Leralynn's trip over the wall wall last night with Tye was bitter sweet. She did get to see all her men River, Coal, Shade, along with tye all together but none of the really remember her as thier mate. Now River and Coal want to make her leave the academy because they can't handle her being they. Tye is a big flirt always around a human princess that thinks she owns him. The only good thing that's happened is while shade doesn't remember her his wolf does. Only when he changes back to human form he thinks he lost time. So no help there. Then the one tool she needs to get back to the fae land to get help is now forever gone. Things are not looking good. OMG wow this story is awesome. I couldn't put it down. characters are fantastic. The twist and turns are amazing it's full of danger, mystery, intrigue, action, drama, spice and more. It's not to be missed. Voluntarily reviewed a copy and I honestly loved it.
I loved (adored) Alex Lidell’s Power of Five novels so it’s no surprise that I’m truly enjoying the episodic sequel Great Falls Academy stories. Sort but full of excitement and adventure. Wonderful characters in a different setting as Lera works desperately to get back her guys. Crime and Punishment (Episode 2) keeps up the strong pace and high quality set in Episode 1 (separately reviewed). Great stuff. These stories can be read separately from the original series (though you’d been missing a fantastic series to do so), but you really do need to start with the first Episode. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The story definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that it is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next Episode.
I really love the interaction between Lera and her very very clueless men. The emotions Lera goes through, you really do feel them alongside her. The despair, the heartbreak, the fleeting hope she sometimes has, only to be crushed a few seconds later.
Pacing and flow were good, a good balance between conversation and action.
The book itself was well written with no (noticeable) errors and yes, there is sex described (if that is important to you).
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book and all in all I really like the story and where it's heading. That said, I feel this episode could have been a tad longer or could have more content. Not that it ended at a bad moment, but with only 100ish pages it was over too quickly.
I really did not like this one, which is so disappointing because I love the original series. I find the characterization of the men pretty OOC; even though they didn't treat Lera like this when they first met her.
The two most egregious instances in this book are when and . Those are her mates! I utterly hate it. Man, it made me upset just writing it down again. She's literally punished by her mates in a totally not-cute way, and I don't care what the story plot going is, I am not down for it.
All the feelings with this episode. It reminds me of the first couple of interactions with Coal and Lera. The start of their relationship was...rocky. And we get to go back to that place for a little while. Lera completely ignored all protocol when River told her not to do something-- and he wants her gone. Who better to do that than Coal?
I love the inner struggle of Lera. She's really being pushed to be the strong one until they can come back to her. And, I think it really gives her an appreciation for the relationships that she has with all of them. Even if it means they are gone from her for a period of time. I do miss the intimacy of their dynamic, but I'm also locked into knowing how this story progresses. Or what happens to our group... cause I do love this world so much.
*Spoiler Alert* Book 2 sees Lera still in Great Falls Academy finding it harder & harder to be around her quint. Especially with the feelings she has for each of them and not being recognised by any of them. River wants her gone, Coal wants to obey River's order to get rid of her, Shade is in two minds about her (the man & the wolf) and Tye wants to be with her. All of them have feelings for her they dont want to admit too. Apart from all that Lera has to find the key to get them home. So she has work cut out for her. I love the dynamic of Lera & her Reverse Harem. Dying to find out whats going to happen next
I admit to being a little let down by the first episode. Though written well, I was disappointed that after finding one another in The Power of Five, we were now right back at square one, just in a different setting.
However, I decided to read the second episode anyway as I’m in love with the characters and truly wasn’t ready to tell them goodbye. Now, second episode finished, I’m falling in love with Lera and her mates all over again. The indescribable pull toward one another, the loyalty, fierceness, and emotion have pulled me in to their world even more.
As the title eluded to this book covers the punishment from the previous books late night escapade. Of course the one to dual out the punishment is Coal and Lera takes it in stride until she causes him to snap! The males can’t remember her so their darker Fae nature comes out but something deep down still calls them. I can’t wait for this series to keep going especially as Shade is being pulled into the story more and now another intriguing plot twist or two is thrown in. I did receive an ARC.
I just can’t believe it. The things Lera has been experiencing. I bet if her males have their memories back they would be heartbroken. Lera is tough although there are moments that it is just too much for her when her mates don’t remember and a certain princess clinging to one of them. I just hope Tye does not do any bedding with the others especially with no memory of Lera. It would probably hurt him as well. I can’t believe the ending. I hope that would be sorted. I really can’t wait for them to get their memories back.
I'm am loving these episodes. However I want more. Each installelment is just soo good it leaves you craving more.
Crime and punishment is Absalutely brilliant. Highly addictive and captivating read.
Even with this turn of events I am still loving the guys, and love how they react towards lera even tho they don't know who she is
Coal and leras scenes were superb. I love her character She is so strong and can't wait to see what happens through out the series. Bring on episode 3!!!!
These cannot be read as standalone, this series needs to be read in order. You don't have to read the original power if 5 series, but it would help. All of the guys are drawn to her and don't know why. There are no conclusions to the first 2 books, just a continuation of the overall storyline. No cliffhangers, just not a complete story on their own. Lera continues to try to find the clay tablet she broke, in an attempt to fix it and restore the guys memories.

I get that all the guys don't have memory of Lera, but that doesn't justify some of their behaviour towards her. I personally think Coal went too far with her and no woman should condone what he did to her out in woods. I had no problem with Coal and his way of getting things out of his system in the first series, but his behaviour in this book crosses the line. Lera girl, no matter how much you misses the guys, you should have walked away multiple times in this book instead of letting them abuse you physically and mentally....

The second book in the great falls academy and I loved it but was a bit frustrated for Lera. She is finding it hard being around her mates that don’t even know that she is there mate. If you have read the other book you know what relationship they had and I miss that. But the story draws you in and you want to keep read. I think there might be a new friend for Lera in her room mate Arisha fingers cross as she doesn’t have many female friends. I just love Alex Lidell books
Lera has so much to deal with and yet keeps on with her mission, with hope that everything comes right again. She’s a very feisty and likeable woman. But all the characters are so well written that you feel their emotions and understand what they’re going through, though I do think reading the prior series helps to know more about them. As always I look forward to the next book.
This is such a good audio book. So Lera has to accept the punishment she is given, but doesn't know that some of her mates want her gone. Is she strong enough to endure the punishment or will she leave. Does she realize what her mates are going through besides her struggles. Bonkers was the cave scene hot. The utter attraction these men fight against Lera is insane. How much kindergartener going to hold out. Gavril, what is his position in all this? I need more of this series.
Picking up directly where the last one left off we have lera getting caught for going over the fence and having to face the wrath of coal via river's prders. She is able to go the to tie with him which was hot. It seems in this episode that everything goes wrong and things seem bleak with getting the males memories back, finding relics, and restoring everything. I loved the sex scenes in the cave, meow. Can't wait for more
I really liked seeing Lera and Coal’s relationship go back to how they were at the beginning of the main series - Coal was always tough on Lera but in this he is even tougher! Whilst Coal’s intensity is back so is Lera’s stubbornness and I really liked seeing these two bouncing off each other again! I also liked seeing River in his new role as deputy headmaster. I thought this was the perfect place to put him for us to see his natural leadership abilities.
This book blew me away and left me needing to know more by the end. The book is full of action from the start and picks up straight from where the first book finished. Love seeing how lera is getting further under the guys skin to try bring them back. Love me some River, Coal, Shade and Tye
Wow. This episode left me breathless at times. The chemistry between Lera and Coal is something I've missed. And Shade, Tye, and River. Let's needs to reunite them, but the ending to this installment definitely is going to put a kink in things. Good thing Lera is too stubborn to give up on her males.
