Robert Sanderson Mulliken ForMemRS was an American physicist and chemist, primarily responsible for the early development of molecular orbital theory, i.e. the elaboration of the molecular orbital method of computing the structure of molecules. He received the Priestley Medal in 1983.

In 1966 he was awarded the Nobel prize in chemistry "for his fundamental work concerning chemical bonds and the electronic structure of molecules by the molecular orbital method".
