Heart and Soul is a spiral of thoughts laid out upon a page- of life, of love and full of the beauty and emotions of a woman whose skin can only shine and whose eyes tell many tales of poetry.Heart and Soul is a collection of poetry meant to encourage and showcase the beauty of being a woman in our world. The themes revolve around self-love, relationships, life, and internal struggles and doubts.
So, I received Heart and Soul through a giveaway I had entered on Goodreads. Mariah kindly sent me this book, along with a sweet little message on the inside. It's obvious that Mariah cares for not only her book of poetry, but also for the readers who are going to be enjoying it. And I definitely did enjoy this! If you're a fan of the more modern poetry style, of which I'm a huge fan, then I think you will love these poems. They aren't necessarily Rupi Kaur style, but they are definitely more modern. Not only with style, but with messages as well. This is one of the most powerful collections I have read in awhile. Every poem had a message to portray, anywhere from finding worth and/or beauty in oneself to hurt coming from a man to empowerment for women, black women particularly. I found that there weren't very many poems that I didn't connect with on at all.
One thing I loved, as well, was the fact Heart and Soul also has a few passages that are, like stated in the title, thoughts and emotions. They aren't necessarily poems, they're important things the author felt she had to say and I appreciated them. In the end, this whole book was a very fun and powerful read and I enjoyed every second of it. I even re-read a few poems/passages because they resonated with me and I had to let them sit for a minute or two before I could move on. If there is any issue I have, I really wish the flow of the poems made a bit more sense. The layout is a little weird for me, as you can read a few empowerment poems and then it is back to some sad stuff. I wish there were some order, as it would have really tied the whole book together. Otherwise, I am absolutely in love with this book and really recommend it to anyone who is interested in poetry. Mariah is a very talented woman who deserves for her talents to be shared with the world.
