A fast ship, a good crew, a treasure, a Clan to lead -- that's all Arthur Pendragon has ever wanted. He sits on the Council, he supports his father's kingship, and he keeps an eye on the Imperial Conglomerate when they come too close to Pirate space.
One day the Conglomerate infiltrates the Clans and poisons the King. Arthur must search for a cure to keep his father alive and the Clans from civil war.
An escape route, a sharp knife, a target, the shadows at his command -- that's all Merlin has ever needed. He fulfills his assignments, he uses the Sterling to sustain his once-royal House in their exile, and wages a private war against the Imperial Conglomerate.
When he learns of an elaborate plot to assassinate him, Merlin does the opposite of what's expected. He flees onto a Pirate ship.
There's a saying among the Pirates: that one's fate is written in the stars. Destiny will always set to rights what has been made wrong.
Arthur and Merlin know that they were meant for the other from the moment they meet. They can feel it from across the galaxies separating them. Nothing can stop them from being together or from fulfilling an ancient prophecy.
Wow, what a great alternate King Arthur and Merlin story. I love this one so much.
It took me a while to read, mostly because the middle felt very slow, and like we wouldn't ever get anywhere. Are we focusing on their relationship? Are we trying to take over the universe?
But the end more than made up for any lacks in the rest of the story. It was very satisfying.
I love Arthur's cockiness, his ability to just trust that things will turn out all right, and his amazing dramatic flair. I love Merlin for his cool powers, his ability to keep going even when hurting so badly, and how he can trust in Arthur wholeheartedly. Together they make a beautiful team, and I am so so happy .
I normally do not like space opera sci-fi books, and yet this one had everything I do love about those: characters I care deeply about, a beautiful romance, really cool space battles, lots sneakiness and having to (try) to defeat an evil empire.
The author has carefully crafted a retelling of the classic King Arthur saga while staying true to the beloved TV series characters. King Arthur, the knights, and Merlin reincarnated into a space opera?! Holy smokes! The creativity and world-building is one of the best I’ve ever read, from any fan fiction or even novel published for capital gain. The clean and smart prose kept me captivated and made it incredibly difficult to put down. Additionally, the twists and insights into the characters’ psyches were utterly masterful.
This story truly plays to the fated “once and future king” destiny. It carries the weight of all the morals and political ideals that the tale of King Arthur stood for into a futuristic setting that still hits close to home.
Shadowlord and Pirate King is another incredible work from Footloose. I found the story engaging without overloading you with information as well, which is always something to look out for in a piece. With just enough lore to make you interested, but not so much that you drown, and an excellent revamp to Uther and Kilgarrah’s characters, SL&PK is captivating, interesting, and just short enough for you to feel satisfied reading it on a sunny afternoon.
Absolutely amazing epos! A space opera of the highest quality! This is one of my favorite stories and I cannot believe how talented the writer is. Read this in one go, could not put it down. The world that was built sucks you in from the first page.
Another great BBC Merlin fan fic from this author. I’m not usually one for space books but this one so well written and had my favorite ship in it so I couldn’t resist. Read: mid 2023
