As I was going through my training to become a Certified Nutrition, I read about the ketogenic diet. I thought that it was quite interesting as I had never heard of it before. I didn’t think much of it until my cousin was talking about it and brought it back to my memory long after I had finished my studies. I started researching it some more and it wasn’t until the end of last year that I decided that I needed this way of eating in my life. Being over the age of 45 made me to start wondering if now would be a good time to ward off any diseases and sicknesses that could potentially attached themselves to me. I already had a healthy base level of eating and a regular exercise routine but I decided to plunge into ketogenics because I wanted to know I was truly healthy in the inside. Dr. Colbert’s book has LITERALLY changed my life. I feel empowered in knowing that I would be just fine without eating a bunch of carbs as what told to me and taught to me. With the ketogenic way of eating, I have loss weight that I thought I won’t lose. I have energy to pull off my full days responsibilities and I’m not forgetting things as much! Bonus! All this and I’m only one month in. Wow! I would recommend this book to everyone.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

As someone that has eaten a low Carb in and off for 15 years I was interested to broaden my knowledge. I knew the basic principles but was excited to delve a little deeper, understand the science and see how I could incorporate it into my lifestyle.

Instead I was somewhat concerned by what I read; not about the diet but the claims made regarding the apparent miracle cure benefits of keto. I am without doubt keto does works for weight loss, it works brilliantly. However, my concern were the claims it “cleared up” all manner of diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and most controversially, cancer. What alarmed me wasn’t the claim, but the utter lack of proof or detail in this, knowing that people with chronic illnesses would be gripped to the pages as if their lives depended on it. I needed the science, I want the timeline, I was fascinated by the claim but they remained aloof anonymous anecdotes - “I knew without a shadow of a doubt that it would usually improve virtually everything that ailed them..”

Unfortunately, this is not the keto book for me; keto is a fantastic diet but this book did not resonate for me.

ARC provided by NetGalley for honest review.

As someone who has been on a Keto based diet for a little over a month now I was very excited to read this book!
REASONS I LOVE THIS BOOK:
1. The author thoroughly break down why Keto works.
2. The Author goes in depth about what aliments can be helped with a Keto lifestyle.
3. The author give substantial information of the history behind Keto.

I will definitely be suggesting this to my friends and members in my Keto groups!

I requested this ARC because a friend of mine posted about her success with a variation of the keto diet, and I wanted to know more about what it was.

Basically the idea behind a keto diet is that your daily intake of food is high-fat, medium-protein, and ultra-low carb, which forces your body into ketosis: (according to Wikipedia) “a metabolic state in which some of the body’s energy supply comes from ketone bodies in the blood, in contrast to a state of glycolysis in which blood glucose provides energy.” So instead of getting most of your energy from carbs first, your body converts over into burning fats first.

Dr. Colbert uses his history as a medical doctor, specializing in patients with cancer, to explain why he started the Keto Zone Diet (based on feedback from other medical professionals) and how based on the results he saw, he expanded his ideas about nutrition to patients with other maladies.

QUOTE: Lowering or eliminating sugar intake had a direct effect on the cancer. The normal high-carb, low-fat intake of most people was simply feeding the cancers. That much I already knew.

According to him, the biggest problem with the Keto Zone Diet is how restrictive it is. It’s a hard-sell to get people to give up their beloved carbs (especially with sugar) and stick with it long-term. But he believes that the results are worth it:

QUOTE: On a somber note, if you have a family history of cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, the Keto Zone will usually help.

Is Parkinson’s Diseases, autoimmune disease, arthritis, dementia, or Alzheimer’s Disease in the family? You may be able to slam the door shut with the Keto Zone diet.

For me, it was a big “ah ha” moment when I realized that not only did the Keto Zone diet offer a way to burn off stubborn fat, it also was the best form of protection from diseases.

The Keto Zone diet provides you with the best brain food possible, most inflammatory triggers are turned off, and fat is burned off at a heightened pace. (I am thinking of possible drawbacks to this, but have not found any.)

Clearly, this is a win-win scenario

Honestly, I’m skeptical. Whenever anyone claims one thing will cure everything, I pause. Even if the source is a medical professional. Even one with years of experience working with patients and seeing the results firsthand.

But I’m still curious.

I like that Colbert talks about the recent paradigm shift where more medical experts are saying that eggs are healthy again, and eating healthy fats is important, and how dietary recommendations are constantly changing. And when he was in medical school his prof told the class that “in about ten years half of what we are being taught would be outdated, old and pretty much of no value. The problem is we don’t know which half that is.”

So, by extension, maybe there’s something to The Keto Zone Diet. Maybe some of this will be proved more universally in the next ten years. Colbert spends a good sixty pages of the book discussing exactly how the diet works medically – how it affects LDL and HDL cholesterol, how carbs and starches interact with the body, the facts regarding fats etc.  And there’s a lengthy section full of references for all his claims as well.

Perhaps half or more of this will all be proven wrong in the next decade. How do you know what’s science and what’s a fad?

But there is something appealing to the idea of training your body to burn fats, and to cut back on unhealthy sugars and grains.

So for those who are interested in the ideas behind ketogenic diets, this book is a good place to start. Colbert explains exactly what’s involved, what side effects you might see while your body is switching from being a carb-burning machine to processing fats, and there’s a lot of information about meal planning and what to buy. He also provides a lot of testimony from patients who have had their lives turned around because of this diet. (Of course, your mileage may vary regarding how much you believe there).

I think if I were to try a ketogenic diet, I would make use of that last section, especially the shopping lists, because making the switch would be a huge adjustment. I’ve already started looking closer at what I’m eating and carbs are in everything.  I’d also make use of the trouble-shooting section, to answer questions I might have as I go, and to see if I am in ketosis or not.

If you’re willing to take Colbert’s fantastic and oft-repeated claims about what the Keto Diet Zone will cure, this book is a good place to start. But if you do have medical issues, it wouldn’t hurt to keep the medical disclaimer at the beginning in mind, and to talk to your personal doctor before starting.

I plan to read a bit more before I decide.

I have read a lot of diet books over the years. Most start by extolling the health benefits of their particular eating plan, which is always convincing. Okay, so most of them sensibly focus on the importance of prioritising fresh fruit and vegetables over processed food (as an aside, this is one of my biggest issues with a lot of vegan and vegetarian food—it’s highly processed. I can’t believe eating a highly processed GM soy product is can be healthier than eating grass-fed meat, or ocean-caught fish).

Typical diet books then move onto the specifics of the eating plan, complete with recipes. And that’s where the ones I’ve read fall down: the recipes are usually for a family of, but I’m the only one on the diet. Yes, I guess the logic of the four-person recipes is that no one wants to cook themselves separate food to the rest of the family. But it means that the diet recipes have to suit everyone in the family … and they never do. I’ve tried.

The Keto Zone Diet is the same, but different.
Yes, preaches the benefits of the keto eating plan, it emphasises fresh food, and it includes a handful of recipes. But it’s not prescriptive, which means it’s easier to follow, and easier to integrate into a family.

What is a keto zone diet?
Put simply, the idea is that the low-fat and low-calorie diets dominating the industry don’t work (as anyone caught on the diet-weight gain treadmill knows). The Keto Zone diet is a variation of the famed Atkins diet, which focuses on losing weight by limiting carbohydrate intake and eating moderate amounts of fat. Fat makes us feel full, while limiting carbs help us not to feel hungry between meals.

In practice, this means no bread, pasta, rice, corn, cereals, potatoes, sugar, or alcohol, limited fruit and limited starchy vegetables (like sweet potatoes and beans). It means moderate protein and fat (e.g. meat, dairy, and nuts), and unlimited low-starch vegetables. He also emphasises the importance of using good fats (such as avocado oil, coconut oil, olive oil, or butter from grass-fed cows) not bad fats (such as canola oil or soybean oil).

That’s it.
And that’s what I like about the Keto Zone Diet.
It’s workable. I can cook and serve the whole family the same food. We just choose our proportions. I eat lots of vegetables, a little meat, and no pasta or potato.

It’s simple, it’s workable, and it’s sustainable.
I won’t go into the science—you can read the book for that. I recommend you do, because this diet does go against a lot of the mainstream dietary advice. If following a low-fat, high-carb diet works for you, then great. Go with it. But I feel constantly hungry on a low-fat diet. I lose weight, but gain it all back again (sound familiar?). I don’t get so hungry on a low-carb diet, which has to be a good thing. If I’m not hungry (and can withstand the temptation to eat when I’m not hungry), then it’s going to be easier to lose weight.

There are a handful of simple recipes at the end of The Keto Zone Diet book, with an emphasis on simple. They are all for one person (well, except for the mayo and seed bread, but both will keep).

It doesn’t matter that there aren’t many recipes.
The internet is full of #Keto options, including cauliflower rice, cauliflower hash browns, and cauliflower pizza base, and a bread substitute or pancakes made from egg and cream cheese (the pancakes are a little sweeter than my regular recipe, but that means I don’t need the maple syrup).

If you’re curious about the keto diet, then Dr. Colbert’s Keto Zone Diet is a good introduction. If you’re a keto ninja, then this probably isn’t the book for you—although it might be a good book to own in paperback, to show your unbelieving friends that there is some real medical science behind your diet.

After trying to lose some weight over the summer, and failing miserably, I came across this book by Don Colbert. I thought I might as well take a look through it. What I found was very surprising to me. I never jumped on the give-up-all-carbs bandwagon, although I don’t go overboard with them. After reading about the positive results Dr. Don Colbert’s patients have had with weight loss AND improved health, I think this is definitely worth trying. He claims that it has actually helped people with some very serious health issues get better, and in some cases they are freed from their problems. The list is astonishing and includes Parkinson’s, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, sleep disorders, ADHD, ADD, blood pressure, fatty liver, IBS, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis, joint aches and more.

The book offers plenty of reasons that a switch to the Keto Zone works. A shopping list is included, and there are enough choices that you can mix and match the options for meals.

Excellent book by a good Functional doctor, MD. Like many he had to have his own sickness and use food to cure it to find out about the power of what you eat on your body. He goes through his life story and how he came to use diet to help his patients get well. He then explains special ways to eat for each condition. I loved the one on Dementia and Alzheimer's diseases, because he immediately takes them off of Statins! In some cases this is all that was needed, and then gives them suggestions on the foods to eat and what to not eat. One of ht pioneers in the field of Functional Medicine.

ARC generously provided by publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I have read more diet books then I should probably admit. I have heard a lot about the Keto diet and read quite a bit about it online. However this book gives real information about how this diet works and the steps one should take to be successful on this diet.

I am anxious to give this a try however I am a little nervous about giving up sugar (I am a bit addicted) but it is worth the try.

This is a very interesting book. The information is valuable to those who might want to understand how the body uses food for fuel and how the body loses it ability to convert the high sugar into energy. For those with serious weight issues who are willing to do the work, it can be the answer for you. Highly recommend reading.

I have heard pros and cons about ithe Keto Diet. Here is one: https://www.health.com/weight-loss/ke...
This book is mostly bits of people's stories of success, so I have been mostly skimming through it. Dr. Colbert has a section that says the diet may be helpful for most health concerns, dangerous for diabetics, and nothing saying it is for sure helpful. I think I may incorporate some of the ideas, at least try to cut back on sugars. I did not realize that MSG is disguised in products via other names--which Colbert mentions in the book on page 34. He says trans fats are disguised as high stearate or stearic rich or vegetable oil on labels.
Colbert says that inflammation instead of high cholesterol is what causes health problems, so cutting back on sugar and other things that cause oxidization in your body helps. Also, testing --NMR lipoprofile test-- to check for the size of LDL particles (small is what causes problems) in blood tests is needed. Insurance does not cover those tests, usually.
I may try the menus, recipes, etc to see if they are helpful.

This is the book to read if you want to learn about keto! Dr. Colbert makes it easy to understand, has very easy recipes with no weird ingredients, and really has made me re-think food. Except for the no bread or pasta part, this is the way I like to eat. Also, I misunderstood the no fruit thing -- you can add in all those yummy fruits once you hit your maintenance zone. I am looking forward to reading his other books and I may even buy a copy for my mother. I also appreciate the fact that he is a medical doctor.

Good stuff 🤗

P.S. Does anyone know a good Canadian author who is knowledgeable about keto? I always like to read the Canadian perspective. Our Canadian food is sometimes different (brands, food inspection, etc.) as well as always being more expensive than the United States. Just wondering.

This was a really good book to dive into if you’re truly trying to figure out what keto is and if it is right for you. This is not a how to diet book, in face you have to read the whole thing to even get this jist of it. There are no nice “week 1” “week 2” outlines. It’s pretty much, “hey, this is what you can and can’t eat, now go forth and figure it out.”

I do have mixed emotions about that scenario, as I would prefer a “plan” just so I can get into a groove and have that, “AH, ok, I’ve got this!”feeling. Let’s be honest, keto is NOT rocket science, but there is a little science involved in the whole process and that is a little intimidating!

So, it’s a really good book and you should read it, but just know this is purely educational in my opinion.

I must admit, I did not know much about the Keto Diet.. This book has given me a lot of information about the subject as well as how this type of diet can effect other things and who they can affect other things such as illness. The book is straight-forward, recipes seem easy to follow. A shopping list is also included and the products do not have to be expensive and should be able to be bought from a grocery store. I have told a few friends about this book and they are interested in reading it. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC of the book in return for my honest review.

This book saved my life. My weight was out of control and I was eating very healthy and very little. My body does not burn carbs well now that my hormones have changed and I have thyroid issues. This is a new lifestyle for me. I can eat my vege food including the processed ones and I have lost 6 inches in my waist, I have 3 to go. Two of my daughters, in their twenties, are on this to lose minimal weight and they are doing very well. Thank you so much Dr. Colbert I am eternally grateful to get my figure back. PS This book made it so much easier for me just following online information is not enough.

My grandson went on this diet and I wanted to understand how it works. I have read several other books and this one was the most clear and concise. Dr. Colbert explained some things in more detail that were glossed over in the other books. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting a clearer picture of the diet's working and the benefits.
He has lost 67 pounds in less than 3 months on this diet and has benefited from the info given here.

I think there was a lot of information that is clearer in this book compared to others I have read. It allowed me to understand the popular diet better than just the foundation of it and that was useful. I personally don't think it's right for me but I think this book would give good information to those who want a better idea of the inner workings of the diet and how it helps you with your lifestyle because it's not just a diet but a genuine lifestyle change.

Must have for nutritional ketosis

I've read several recipes books and several Facebook groups but all of them get off track with eating the unhealthy fats I found this book the best one on eating healthy and making it nutritional not just about losing weight but about being healthy. I trust dr. Colbert information more than just somebody trying to make money selling an ebook. Trust this book over what you read in a Kindle book or in Facebook group for people just share their experiences rather than the facts and the truth.

Dr. Colbert's book on the ketogenic diet is a good introductory book for people exploring the idea of a ketogenic lifestyle. The book is divided into sections covering the impact of carbohydrates on our bodies, the benefits of a ketogenic diet, implementing ketogenic changes and recipes. Dr. Colbert does not talk over your head with unnecessary medical jargon. The book is written for the general public to understand the medical reasons behind a low carbohydrate, high fat diet. While reading the book I felt like I was sitting in his office, talking with him in a one on one consultation.

This book placed me into food repentance once I understood what today's food does. The first two thirds of the book explains how food effects your hormones. And there are two sources of energy: sugar (carbs) and fat. My appetite and cravings have degreed as I have awkwardly moved into the fat burning lane. And I have lost over twelve pounds. I bought a new belt that was 2 inches shorter. There is some hype in the book, but overall excellent. My weak area is understanding and translating my food into suggested measurements for carbs, fats, and protein.

This book is an accessible description of the Keto Diet. This book does a great job of providing a scientific overview without going too deep into the details. It keeps a solid flow that is easy to read.

It does follow the standard dietary book outline - tell a success story, explain something, follow up with a success story but it's mostly realistic on the potential of the change. This style has the benefit of making the book easy to read.

I would recommend this book as an overview and quick starter for anyone interested in the topic of a ketogenic diet.

Netgalley, to the author and to the publisher. I wanted to read this book because I had heard a lot of people talking about the keto diet, but didn't really know what it is. Close to the beginning of the book, I realized that keto zone is something that I will never be able to get because I am unable to eat fish or nuts, and that is the majority of this diet. I found a lot of what the author said about weight loss and diet very interesting, so I finished the book and gained a lot of knowledge.

First things first: Doc Colbert's diet isn't a lifestyle. It's a temporary regimen in which you adjust the content of your calories(I'm not giving away the details). The book has informative chapters on cholesterol and the types of fats. Informative, and includes a few mentionings of the doc's real-world experience with his own patients.

If you get lost in the minutia of cholesterol, skip ahead.

Includes recipes and shopping guide.

Intrigued by my sister's dietary changes, I decided to check out this book. It's really geared toward people who want/need to lose weight, but is also useful for those wanting to have a healthy eating approach. I think it's pretty clear that sugar and carbs (which convert to sugar) are the enemy, but I had no idea the role fats play in maintaining a healthy body. I never would have assumed 70% daily calories should come from fat. Very interesting.

Dr. Colbert's book helps you lose weight without starving yourself, feeling hungry, or losing energy by following a high fat, low carb, and moderate protein diet. Following the Keto Zone diet will help you burn fat, balance appetite hormones, lose weight, and reverse or prevent many diseases! I have found the ideas in this book do work and have begun to lose weight using some of the recipes. Cutting back my sugar and carbs has proved to be very beneficial thanks to Dr. Colbert's book.

While a little on the older side, this book was really quite good. Lots of testimonies and clear explanations about why and how keto diets works. It also includes a lot of help to get started on the diet and a handful of recipes. Having lost 30 kilos (66lbs) and 32 cm (12.6inches) off my waist in 9 months on a keto diet - with little to no exercise - I can attest to the fact that the diet works well and is the easiest diet I've ever tried.
