The story of DiCaprio's meteoric rise to fame, delving beneath his polished Hollywood image to examine just what makes him tick

Leo has become one of the highest paid actors in the world and his position looks set to be secure for some time to come as the release of the new 3D version of Titanic heralds another sensational year in the life of Hollywood's hottest talent. The year will also see him take on the lead role in a new adaptation of The Great Gatsby and see him cast as a villain in Quentin Tarantino's new blockbuster Django Unchained. It's a far cry from the heartthrob's humble beginnings when he had to scrape for parts in TV commercials and soap operas before catching the eye in Baz Luhrmann's stylish Romeo and Juliet and then achieving worldwide superstardom with Titanic. Cementing his reputation with captivating performances in films like Catch Me If You Can and The Departed, DiCaprio won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in The Aviator. A keen environmentalist and conservationist, he has given millions to good causes around the globe and has never been shy about wearing his political ideas on his sleeve. Although he's spent more than 15 years at the top of his profession, Leonardo remains something of an enigma. He has famously dated some of the world's most beautiful women, but seems no nearer to settling down, and his often daring movie choices suggest someone still striving for perfection despite his stunning successes.

Why am I not surprised there are typos in the GR blurb?

This book set a new record for the worst rate of errors I've ever seen in a book. Over a hundred comma faults, typos, homophone errors, and non-sentences.  The author is supposedly a journalist? Not like it's an academic tome or anything, but a lot of people were intended to read this book, so perhaps it could have an editing budget? I get it, they were trying to get this out to ride the Wolf of Wall Street wave, but not finding the time to have someone with a high school education read it over is an insult to the audience.  Come on.

Beyond that, the arc of DiCaprio's life is an interesting story, but I got the impression that I wasn't learning anything I couldn't find with time and a search engine.

Leonardo DiCaprio: The Biography by Douglas Wright

Why I decided to read this book:

With his dirty blonde hair and eyes as blue as the bottom of the ocean, his face made it almost impossible to neglect the urge to watch every movie with his presence, and once all the movies had been seen, this book was next on the agenda.

Which category on the bingo board does this book complete:

This book completes a diary, autobiography or biography. As soon as I saw this box on the bingo board, I immediately knew just what I wanted to read. Biographies are just as necessary to read as classic books or poems, Biographies should both inspire and reassure. Sometimes people have wrong ideas about people, their lives, and their achievements. For instance, not everyone who accomplishes great things in life knows right away what they love and what they will do. Not everyone who achieves great things was a wonderful, brilliant student when they were a kid. Through reading biography, we should learn that the important thing is to be open to new ideas, and to always remember that anything is possible in our future!

My favourite quote from this book and why:

This biography quotes Leonardo’s words “I want to do good work with interesting films with good people. If I set high standards for myself, people will remain interested in my work” this happens to be my favourite quote. It is no wonder he is such a great actor with this quote. This quote shows that success comes with hard work. Leonardo was smart with his thinking and he did truly have a passion for acting, he made him self evident that he had goals that he wanted to accomplish and he was grateful for the position that he was in, he wasn’t willing to waste his opportunity. I think we can all take away that success doesn’t come easily, we have to work hard and be smart with our thinking to accomplish our goals.

Something new I learned from this book:

This book gave me a lot of insight in to DiCaprio’s life. Him being precisely (yes I calculated) 8978 days or 24 years & 7 months older than me we aren’t almost as close into being brought up in the same generation of when he rose to fame, sadly I missed out on the posters and t-shirts. I am glad to have read this book as I wouldn’t have found out facts like, he was booted off the set of a children's television series Romper Room for being disruptive at the age of five or that he was named for the other famous Leonardo: Leonardo DaVinci. Before he was born, the story goes, DiCaprio's mother felt her baby kick for the first time while she was standing in front of a portrait of Leonardo DaVinci at a gallery in Florence, Italy - according to Leo, his father took this as a cosmic sign. Quirky things like that which are what I what to have taken away from reading a biography.

A character or setting that was interesting to me (and why) :

Of course the one and only Leonardo DiCaprio. Not only does he look that part but also he is a phenomenal actor, being into the preforming arts and always being interested in acting and film. My older sisters and I have always been inspired by Leonardo’s acting (and face) . He has great ability to immerse himself into every character he is trying to portray, this portrayal has a great impact to me as the viewer and he is truly an inspiration for me, and a great example of a passionate hard worker.

Despite the fact that this is a biography rather than an autobiography, I feel that this book didn't disappoint at all. I liked how Leo kept a close relationship with the author and always voiced his opinion on important events in his life and made his feelings known. I really admired this in a biography because usually the author just tells what they know from other books or other sources and doesn't bother to collaborate with the person that they're writing the book about. However, this book showed that Leo is a very kind and generous individual and definitely wanted his voice to be heard throughout his biography.

I think my best genre of books is autobiography books and the worst is biography books. While reading an autobiography, I feel more close to the writer, like he's next to me, honestly telling me his life story( like Will Smith's: Will), as for the biography, it feels like I am just watching a documentary, the writer just collected some interviews and met some of the individual's friends then wrote his *so called* book, and that's how I felt while reading Elon Musk and Leonardo DiCaprio's biographies. I was very excited about buying the book about my favorite actor and the most beautiful man in the world, but left disappointed after finishing it, however the book had something to offer about Leo's private life, what shocked me is the number of models he has been dating, it's like, this man h**ked up with the all the beautiful women out there... anyway, what interest me the most is how did he start working on the environment issues, it seems that he started thinking about the protection of the environment after filming his movie: the Beach, (it was the same movie that inspired me to pack my bags and head to Thailand), Leo started adapting a green lifestyle, and donated millions of dollars to contribute in many projects which aim to protect mother nature from a terrible disaster...

It’s kind of boring, but it really lays out DiCaprio’s rise to fame and a bit of what he went through. As an actor reading this kind of thing really helps get you perspective and almost a sense of community.

An intriguing biography that opened my eyes to the real life behind holly wood as well as how much work, effort and tears are required to get there.

Thought this was pretty poorly written but none the less I did thoroughly enjoy it. Looking forward to watching some of Dicaprio earlier films that I didn't really know about and rewatching some of my faves!

I enjoyed this biography a lot. I have just one complaints: it only covers Leo's career until part of 2012 (but this is a small one) and there are no resources and links to sustain the research work, quotes, facts, rumors, etc. I even contacted the author to ask him if there was a separate link on the Internet that could provide them but he hasn't answered yet. Does anyone know if there are sources for this book? Anyway, I've discovered a lot of things I didn't know about Leo and it's always funny to be reminded that Leo just speaks his mind on whatever subject, he's not afraid to say what he truly wants to say. Which is very rare for a celebrity in the USA.
My respect for him has always been great and after I saw him in Rome this January my love for him and his talent has only grown bigger.

Leonardo DiCaprio: The Biography, is about the story of DiCaprio's meteoric rise to fame. He first fell in love with acing when he saw his brother act in commercials, since then he went to in the world of acting and had invested his time for it. His first breakout film role was "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" playing the role of an autistic brother giving the audience a surreal character. The movie was a box office, world wide hit. Throughout the book he's an aspiring actor, but along the way he's slowing making his name a household name for all of Hollywood. In this biography of Leonardo DiCaprio, as a reader we get to enjoy to see him striving for success and how he does it as an aspiring actor. Through the book Leonardo goes through a conflict, which is within himself, knowing at any giving moment, it's him who stirs the wheel in what direction his career can go, his choices direct where his success can lead to. In the end, Leonardo DiCaprio was just a young boy living in the poor area of L.A to soon be one of the best actors of our time. Leonardo has been in at least 40 movies and he has been nominated for six Academy Awards, four British Academy Film Awards and nine Screen Actor Guild Awards, winning one award each from them and three Golden Globe Awards from eleven nominations and of course getting the highly anticipated Oscar for best actor in 'The Revenant' which was also a box office hit like his last 40 movies. I gave this book a 5 star rating and highly recommended to this all boys and girls of all ages. Especially for aspiring actors trying to make it big. Lastly I hope readers everywhere gets a chance to read this book, even though it's about acting and not everybody enjoy the craft of it but you can learn a lesson from it. This book and the story itself shows that knowing anybody from anywhere, where they started, came from, trying to succeed,at whatever field, knows that this book makes them know they can achieve whatever they want and desire is possible when you get motivation from this book.
