Stallion Ridge #3
Suspects & Scales
Deputy Cody Moore is shattered.
The murder of someone dear to him has pushed him to a breaking point and awakened the monster sleeping inside him. While the young man is no stranger to tragedy and death, having someone slaughtered under his watch has left him rattled with heartache.
In the wake of the devastation, a mysterious shadow of a man is dispatched to Stallion Ridge to track down the murderer. Even with his heart in pieces and a coiling monster inside him, Cody refuses to leave the investigation to this mystifying man.
Cody knew his life was forever changed after what happened at the river, but he never expected the powerful current that is the dark and charismatic Quellin.
Suspects & Scales is the third installment to the Stallion Ridge series. While the romance is self contained to this story, there is an overarching plot that starts in Heartache & Hoofbeats. It is recommended to read the series in order before starting with the third book.

Oh boy, this one was a bit of a mess!
I can normally ignore spelling errors or not great editing, but the amount of errors, repetition and plot holes in this book were just too many to ignore. It really distracted me and made the reading experience less than enjoyable.
Again, the relationship is very instalove, there's no real relationship building or real getting to know each other, but I've come to accept that will be the case. The sex scenes also ramble on forever - I don't care about their orgasms, I want to know who these characters are and how they fall in love! What bothered me though was the way Quillen breaks Cody's heart, yet just because he saves him from the murderer, everything is just forgiven and there's absolutely no discussion about what happened or why. There's no grovelling, no rebuilding trust, no repairing their bond. Just Cody being a doormat...
We also find out that Cody has become a shifter, which is supposed to be mythical, but it's never fully explained how this came to be or what it could mean. He's not native (as far as I can recall) so he shouldn't have the ability to switch from a human form to a spirit animal form, yet he can now turn into a rattlesnake? There's no explanation or investigation as to why the shift is so painful for him compared to everyone else either. There's no explanation for why the change ever happened. We don't get to find out if he stops keeping it a secret from the town... Just felt like it was convenient for the story and too much was missing..
There's also barely any interaction with Cody's colleagues except for them to be kinda condescending to him? It felt very much like Cody and Quillen existed in a strange bubble and everyone in Stallion Ridge was pretty much forgotten about.
The villain reveal was also so weird! I thought it was the person it turned out to be, but that twist felt like a bad EastEnders storyline....
Hoping the next book will be better

My favorite of the series so far.
Cody is a sweetheart and he is having a super rough time of it. Quellin is the "tall dark stranger" who is immediately smitten. The romance happens quickly, but there is a bit of angst there and also a little bit of kink. I also didn't see that bit of a twist coming when it came to the bad guy.
I love the number of different mythical shifters that are popping up in this world. You never know what the next character will turn out to be.
My biggest issue here was the lack of proofreading. So many missing, wrong, and misspelled words, it did jar me out of the story a couple of times.

Review:
I couldn't get into this one as much as the previous two because the romance was too rushed. They knew each other for about a day before they were in love. And Cody had only ever kissed one person before, I think, but he immediately jumped into bondage sex with his love interest after knowing him for a day. I feel like they weren't a bad pairing, I think I could've felt their romance had it gone slower, but it was just too serious too fast.
The rest of the book was good though. The mystery as the characters solved the murder. Cody dealing with his grief and panic attacks and newfound abilities. The Old West setting, but with supernaturals. The moments with other characters from previous books (like seeing how cute the gruff Gunner is with Marybell, letting her sit on his lap while he works at the desk, and how she calls him "Papa" now).
Cody was hot-headed but sweet. Quellin was calculating and fierce but warm with Cody. Both were likeable once I got to know them a bit.
Overall, this wasn't my favorite so far, but it was still an enjoyable Weird West story in the town of Stallion Ridge with a sweet (if rushed) romance, likeable characters, and an interesting mystery.
*Even though each book in this series focuses on different characters, I recommend reading them in order, or you might be lost in regards to some plot/world elements and character/relationship backgrounds.*
*Rating: 3.5 Stars // Read Date: 2021 // Format: eBook*
Recommended For:
Fans of Books 1 and 2 in Maz Maddox's Stallion Ridge Series. Anyone who likes the Old West but with supernaturals, worlds accepting of LGBT+ people and relationships, mlm romance that's sweet and sexy and a touch angsty, likeable characters, and series with different couples in each book but connected stories.

Series: Stallion Ridge #3
Rating: 4 stars - It was really good
Well this was a surprisingly steamy read! Deputy Cody Moore was a sweetheart who was struggling with his friend's death. What he doesn’t expect is to fall for the Iara Widow that was sent to help track down the killer. He was just adorable, especially with his inexperience with sex and trying to flirt with Quellin.
Quellin was a tall, dark and handsome stranger who was immediately smitten with Cody. I adored Quellin just as much as Cody. He was protective, sweet, and surprisingly caring for Cody, especially after sex. Their relationship was steamy and sweet, which is my favorite kind, with some very steamy bondage scenes.
I enjoyed the hunt for the killer. I had figured out who it was pretty early, but there was still some surprises that I wasn’t expecting. I also loved all the little scenes with the previous couples and Marybelle. I adore Marybelle and her outspoken nature. I really hope she gets her own book in the future. Overall, this has been my favorite couple so far. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Stallion Ridge.

I loved this book with the relationship and how it was built up. It was slow going. There was a bit of angst. Marybell was in there for some important scenes. Wish we saw more of her. I would love for her to get a book centered around her. Maybe a Christmas miracle. She could find a little orphan critter or such. The mystery was not how I wanted it but then I am not the author. It is her world that she graciously allows us to visit. I must say this one may be my favorite one.

My favorite so far. I loved Cody and Quellin. Also the western style bondage. Gunner and Marybell were adorable but Cal and Jesse fell in the background a bit, until he threatened the assassin. I liked the slowness of the relationship and Quellin taking care of Cody. Sweet and smooth with a murder mystery. Curious about Sky, Mack, Elliot and Lucas.

Received ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review
I think this is the most deeply emotional story of the series so far. Not that the others aren't, but from the very beginning you're immediately in your feels over the fallout from the death of the character. Cody is traumatized and heartbroken, and fighting a new aspect of himself. Quellin is a mysterious guy sent to solve the mystery, and we learn he has his own ties to the case. I actually wish that had been explored more. I really enjoyed them together though. I keep saying this in each review for this series, but the relationship dynamic between all three couples is so different from each other. I really give credit to the author for doing that. It keeps each book fresh. I love that we keep learning more about the characters we already know and love. I really enjoy the creatures in this world. Onto the mystery, this book resolves some of the dangling threads from the previous books. I'll be honest, I called the bad guy in book 2? maybe book 1? whenever he was introduced. However, there IS a twist with it that I did not predict so that's good. I hope there's more books to come. I have a list of things I'm still interested in having answers about or seeing more in depth.

Of course, I immediately read the next book. You can't leave me with a cliffhanger like that and expect me to not dive into the next one.
✦ Cody is sad, someone give him hugs
✦ I bet Quellin is going to be great at giving hugs
✦ Oh 👀😳 those are not the hugs I was expecting...but I'm strangely into it
✦ Marybell and Gunner are the perfect father/daughter duo ❤️
✦ Cody needs more hugs
✦ Scarlet is the best at healing broken men
✦ CALLED IT but still enjoyed it
✦ Aww, healing
This was SO GOOD! I enjoyed myself so much. Also, Mack is still a horny bastard and I am so excited the next book is his!

This book deserves a triple Wow! I’m impressed on how each book surpasses the previous ones in the series. The creative mind of the author is blowing my mind. New mythical shifters, each so unique compared to any paranormal shifter books I’ve every read. The old wild west, paranormal shifters, hot hot chemistry romance, and all wrapped around a murder mystery. I am in love with this series!

Poor Wade and poor Cody. I wanted to transport myself into the book and safe Wade before he gets killed. The only good things coming out of this are that the killer is exposed before he can kill anyone else and Cody finds someone to love. And Maybell, dear child, you are wise beyond your years...
I'm not one for snakes... *shudder* I hope I won't have nightmares after this. Especially the descriptions about a snake tail coiling around his body and rattling to warn enemies and slithering... well you get the gist. I didn't connect to Quellin all that much I'm sorry to say. Cody in the other hand I was quite emotionally invested in. He was so sweet and innocent and feels so deeply. He needs someone strong like Quellin to protect his bleeding heart from the world.

This is the 3rd Stallion Ridge story and the best one yet! Maz Maddox is getting better and better.
At the end of Book 2 Deputy Cody Moore discovered the dead body of his dear friend, the Iara calling himself Wade, and in the moment he did Cody _changed_. Changed into a monster, something that should not have been possible given that Cody was human, not one of the other races. His grief, his guilt pushed him to the point of change.
But Wade wasn't just any Iara, he was Salias, the youngest son of Matron Lelia, ostensibly the queen of the Iara. Wade had been a prince and had been murdered. Matron Lelia wanted vengeance for her son's murder and when she came to claim her son's body she brought with her the one person she trusted to mete out justice - her assassin, the Iara Widow Quellin.
Quellin was more than just an assassin and had powerful ties to both his matron and the dead Iara prince. Vengeance burned in his heart, but there was something about young deputy Moore, Salias's human friend, that made him burn in a different way.
Cody is determined to help Quellin find Wade's killer, but he was also determined to bring the killer to proper justice because it was the righteous thing to do. But there was something about the Iara Widow that made Cody tingle in places he'd never tingled before. As they worked together to catch Wade's killer their attraction burned hotter and they eventually gave in to it but...
Quellin was Matron Lelia's to command, his life was not his own, and as such he could never be Cody's. As the investigation nears it's conclusion Quellin is forced to make the hardest choice of his life. His promise to Matron Lelia, or the young more-than-human who'd captured his heart.
This book was amazing. Seriously. And I leave you with two words...
Supernatural. Shibari.

Changing into oneself
Another phenomenal story from Stallion Ridge! This time featuring the youngest and most changed character, Cody, after the shocking murder and turning at the end of the last book. Cody found Wade murdered and shifted into something he shouldn't have been able to as a human and is now living in misery and guilt. Becoming the very creature that attacked him seems to be just the icing on the cake to the loss and pain in his life right now. Cody is going through a very emotional journey in this book and is helped along by a newcomer to the town.
It turns out Wade had quite the prestigious family. His mother sends her assassin to find the murderer, a deadly Iara named Quellin. Quellin and Cody start off working together, what with Cody's closeness both to the Wade and to the murder, but they don't work well. However Cody is persistent and Quellin is fascinated by this young man so accepting of shifters but so unusual himself. As things start to go down the rabbit hole the two men work together to try to bring Wade's killer to justice.
There continues to be more revealed about this town and it's characters that hints to future stories. With the town expanding and an every growing number of shifters coming in there is much change coming and many more secrets to be told. Excellent series!

I love this series! 😍
I think Cody and Quellin might possibly be my favorite couple so far
The Stallion Ridge series is a magical blend of fantasy, the old west, mystery, and suspense all wrapped up in the sweetest of love stories - It marks ✔all the right boxes for me.
I think Cody has always held my heart. He is innocence personified - despite his own sad past he still looks for the good in everyone and boy does he have a curious streak.
We picked up pretty much where book 2 left off - Cody is still trying to come to terms with the "gift" he acquired as well as the guilt he feels regarding his friend's death. With the murderer still on the loose, a specialist is brought in to assist the sheriff.
Enter Quellin - tall dark and yummmm - need I say more? Quell finds himself enamored by Colts youth and innocence - knowing he shouldn't indulge but unable to resist a sample Quell finds himself in a tough spot. He has commitments and his position does not allow for a happy ever after. Wanting and Knowing are two very different things.
This story had me laughing, holding my breath, wiping those silent tears and releasing the occasional 'awwww'
What are you waiting for? Go on and get yourself over to Stallion Ridge!
Oh and before I go

Moving on
I loved this story. I think this might be my favorite of the series. I loved the chemistry between Cody and Quellin.
Cody feels so deeply about the people he has lost in his life. He really does need something or someone to hold on to. He's holding himself together after the most recent loss, but with the other added newness in his life, he is coming apart. I like that he has to learn to accept himself in all facets. He explores, grows, and heals in front of our eyes and it is great.
Quellin works alone and I get the feeling that he has accepted that as his lot in life and form connections due to the nature of his job. I have to say, for a standoffish man, he is wonderful and warm. He is both cold and caring. I love his exploration with Cody and seeing his reaction too having someone watch his back is warming.
These two guys hold your attention and give you so many feelings. I want more time with them and too see more thread. I can't wait to see what happens in the next story.
I received an ARC of this book from LesCourt Author Services. This is my honest opinion and review.

I think this story is the best one yet.
I loved Cody and Quellin. I think the two emotionally and of course physically worked really well together.
Cody is on the innocent side of life and I really like it. I loved watching him open up to new ideas as he thought them up or read about them. I’ve always enjoyed his character, but in this story, he captured a piece of my heart. I enjoyed Quellin as well, as we seem to just fit perfect with Cody and knew how to take care of him.
Quellin was assigned to find and kill whoever murdered his brother which brought him to Stallion Ridge. Cody was the one to discover Wade (Salias), Quellin’s brother, dead. The two work together mostly to try and solve the case. There are several towns people, including the sheriff and deputies in this story, but it really revolves around the two and solving the case.
I love Maz Maddox writing style and her imagination. The emotions were ramped up and the details were more evolved. I can’t wait to read more form Maz Maddox.

10 Stars.🌟 Brilliant MM shifter romance.
10 Stars.🌟 🔥💖🔥💖 A brilliant book to the series which must be read in order.
Cody thought Quellin was a arse when they meet but Cody didnt want to be left out of Que's investigating. The mystery of the identity of Wade's murderer is to solve. This is Brilliantly written with each character pov. I have felt sad, laughed and sat on the edge of my chair as scenes play out in this book. Hot hot kisses, bondage threads, virginity, danger are all included and more. You can't not help feel for Cody as he fears what he may face in his dreams. I did note Faye's spelling from previous books was spelt different in this one as I should know. lol The ending is dramatic one as scenes play out, this is the best book yet..
Quellin (a Widow and an assassin) was notified his brother, Wade was dead.
Cody was the first to find his freind, Wade when he was killed which shook Cody up. Cody was once human but not now and recently shifting. (KU Read)

Cody was a sweetheart who made me want to know more about him in book one, then he absolutely broke my heart in book two. I was so happy to know he was the next Stallion Ridge resident who was going to find love. Of course, after the first two books, I knew that it wouldn't be easy.
Quellin was sexy, dangerous, and often cold. He was Cody's opposite in almost every way, but the two were drawn to each other from the start. Quellin's reasons for being in Stallion Ridge were painful for both men, and Cody was still dealing with the horrifying aftermath of the Lamia attack. Falling in love should not have been possible. Fortunately, this romance took place in a town where anything is possible.
I am a total fan of this series, and this book was fantastic. I loved the characters and the way they each viewed the world. I loved the sense of family they all shared. And I hope to read more of this town and its fascinating residents!

So enjoyable.
This is the third book in the Stallion Ridge series. We left the second book with the discovery of the horrific murder of Wade and Cody's unexpected shift in to a Lamia.
Quellin is Wade's brother and one of the infamous Widows an elite assassin charged by his matron to find the killer, but he is intrigued by Cody, who seems to be struggling with something, something that others are not sure they want Quellin to know. Then there are the other secrets that this town seems to be hiding.
I really enjoyed this book it had quite a bit of action and as the attraction between Quellin and Cody heats up there is plenty of steam. As this world expands the characters grow and become richer and I for one can't wait to see what comes next.

Cody is a deputy in Stallion Ridge, mourning the loss of his friend Wade. Still unable to accept that he is also a very large snake. Then he meets Quellin, Wade’s brother, a Widow (your basic assassin) and also what I take to be a Merman. Cody is trying to find who killed Wade, while trying to adjust to his new snake abilities. Then there’s Quellin, a beautiful, distracting knot tying man who is temporarily living with him.
The residents of Stallion Ridge just keep getting more interesting (mythical?). Very likable characters and suitably nasty bad guys. I have enjoyed this series a lot and would recommend that the other books are read first.
I received an arc of this book.

The scales of love tip in our direction
Suspects and Scales is the 3rd book in Maz Maddox excellent fantasy western series.
It continues right after the 2nd book ended. We follow the love between Cody and Quellin.
This was definitely an excellent book to read. You can watch as Cody accepts his life and fate with the help Of Quellin, the Iaran brother of his friend Wade.
Maz again builds the world in creative ways, taking mythical creatures and blending them into a western story.
The romance between Quellin and Cody is a slow burn that turns white hot.
If you read the other Stallion Ridge books, you need to read this one As soon as possible.

Incredible world-building, amazing characters that will touch your heart. Mix love, magic, angst, mystery, hope, fantasy with lots of twists and turns and you have this incredible story-line filled with characters you want as your friends. I love a world where sphinx, minotaur, hijinx, seahorses and so much more live and thrive together in this wonderful town.
Cody and Quellin are combustible! Cody's grief and his innocence contrast Quellin's dark and dangerous persona. i loved these characters together!
Maz Maddox has created a very special place in the universe with The Stallion Ridge series and i cannot wait for the next book!

Great
I received this book by the author and this is my honest opinion.
So so good, this is the 3rd book in the series and follows Cody a snake shifter and Quellim a merman. As well as having this new relationship to follow we also get the conclusion from a running plotline throughout the previous books so best to read from book 1 so you get all the background history.
I enjoyed these characters as per usual it was well written and lovingly portrayed and I'm glad Cody got his happily ever after. The villian of the story completely shocked me, I was not atall expecting who it turnt out to be. A first class imaginative read and one I look forward to reading

Why tho😩
I loved the story, the characters, and I still love all of the other parts of this series just as much as I did, if not more. This is one of the most interesting shifter worlds I’ve ever encountered. I love that it screams ‘fated mates’ but doesn’t say it, and I love that they aren’t these massively overpowered, immortal creatures that are basically walking gods.
But the need for heavy editing almost ruined this book. It wasn’t great in the first one, but it wasn’t too terrible. The second one was worse, but I mean, it was salvageable. This one? Dudes, it was bad. Really, REALLY bad.
3.5/5. I’m curious to see what Sky has to say about that epilogue…

[“Reggie and Robbie? Did your parents hate you?” Quellin asked seriously.]
*
[“Gods, Cal. Cody’s a grown man. Let him pine.” Gunner gave a shrug.
“I ain’t pining,” Cody snapped. “I just wanna be close to the investigation, s’all.”
“Shit, kid. I don’t blame you.” Mack wiggled his eyebrows. “I wanna be close to his investigation too.”]
*
[“What makes the snake honest is its tail. When a foe, something bigger and all the power in the world comes too close, the snake knows he can kill it. He knows the poison in his fangs would melt its muscle and it would die. Instead of striking, it shakes its tail in warning.”]

Cody gets one hell of a development arch in this one. The edition of the fantastic Quillin and the more challenging nature of the plot make this book my favourite of the series so far. This book had me in tears, goddamnit.
It is such a treat to have clues to the mysterious serial killer subtly placed in the story.
What a fun, heartbreaking, exciting mystery-romance!

what a fabulous series!
This is a mm western paranormal romance with mystery, the third in a series that should be read in order! What a simply fun story! The author has built a perfectly contained world and developed flawed, complex characters that make this do much fun to read! I was so sad that the character murdered was one I rather liked from the first two books and had hoped to see their HEA, however, it made it ever more important to know who had done it with my attachment to them!

short, hot, sweet and enjoyable
I was smitten with Cody from the start, and I loved seeing so much of Scarlet in this
Quellin was a very interesting character to read about, between his Iara heritage, surly attitude and lowkey daddy vibe, I had a good time with him
I was a little disappointed with the mystery in this. I was certain of the culprit from some point in the last book, and I was never once dissuaded, but the best part of Maz's shorter works is her characters, and this was no exception
Bring on Mack's book!
PS. This is probably 3.5 material, but I'm biased, so 4
