Tying Their Shoes: A Christ-Centered Approach to Preparing for Parenting

Rate this book
Through a gospel-centered approach to parenting, Tying Their Shoes by Rob and Stephanie Green, lays the foundation for expecting parents to welcome a new addition into their home in light of the gospel. First-time soon-to-be parents and parents expecting an additional child will find Christ-centered hope, practical advice, and encouragement toward parental unity in this invaluable resource. Authors Rob and Stephanie Green know a baby brings many wonderful changes for both biological and adoptive parents. While other parenting resources exist to help expectant parents prepare for whats around the corner, the Greens know the gospel is the best resource to ground couples in their relationships with the Lord, with each other, and with their children. When pressure situations cause us to lose our biblical footing, Tying Their Shoes aims to guide expectant parents toward a dependent posture before the Lord. Through both a mother's and father's perspective, Rob and Stephanie Green dive into the goal of parenting, the blessings of parenting, and learning to discipline as well as physical intimacy in marriage, pregnancy and labor, and other practical realities of first-time parents. Above all else, Tying Their Shoes equips soon-to-be parents to create a gospel-centered home and mindset, lovingly pointing couples to our Father who cares for his children and is with them every step of the way.

This book is a tool every new parent needs in their toolbox. It is robustly biblical, immensely practical, and is written with both the father and mother in mind. It is sure to be a book new parents will want to keep by their side as they prepare and parent. I know the next time I hear of someone who is expecting their first child, I will be giving them a copy of this book. If you are a seasoned parent who is looking to invest in new parents or a soon-to-be grandparent who is wanting to equip your own kid in their new roles, then you will want to make sure you check out this resource too!

This is a basic intro to parenthood and would be especially helpful for couples who haven't yet discussed things like discipline, stewardship of finances, sex as new parents, the father's role in parenting, etc. Because the authors covered so much material in such a brief space, there was only room for fairly general, introductory info, but this would definitely be a helpful resource for some new parents!

This book has been such a pleasure to read as I await the birth of my first child. It has given me insight, peace, and understanding as it pushed me to God and his word. Which is the bases of not only parenting, but marriage and everyday life. Very thankful that my identity isn’t found in being a husband, provider, or father. But my identity is in Jesus Christ. This book hammers this concept and is such an encouragement in that regard.

This book is aimed at first time parents, but it is also beneficial for parents who are expecting more kids. It summarized a lot of feelings I’ve had over the past year and best practices. It gives practical “homework” and topics that spouses should converse about before their baby is born. Most importantly it focuses on how the gospel impacts every area of life, and that it changes everything. Would recommend for first time parents!

This book detailed how to prepare for parenting spiritually and had some extremely helpful chapters about reframing desires for 'me time', communicating as a couple, and reorienting on God during difficult periods.

I appreciated the practical approach this book took and how it did less of telling you what to do and more of what questions to be asking in this season of transition.

Sound and practical with a strong biblical foundation and applications - discussion questions at the end of each chapter proved to be most fruitful. However, the same point(s) is/are restated and reiterated multiple times within each chapter, so reading often feels tedious.

A scripturally saturated guide for impending parents, covering a mix of theological concepts, principles and practical application in a format that gives insight, wisdom, things to ponder and decisions to make as they approach parenthood.

With larger topics that cover your true identity in Christ, prioritising your marriage, as well as the goals and blessings of parenting, there is much for couples to ponder. There are also more practical considerations, such as how to approach birth, the equipment you might actually need, and how dads can ensure they are involved.

Recommended reading for Christian couples who want solid, biblical input and wisdom as they prepare for parenthood.

After searching through many books about parenting, I was having a hard time finding a book that simply gave a general overview of what to expect in our new roles as parents. Especially from a biblical, gospel centered perspective. But, after finding this book I knew that this was what I was looking for. Its contents give a broad range of advice for new parents. While I didn't agree with everything 100%, I still got so much value and insight from it. I am so glad I found this book as we prepare to be parents of our first, and I would recommend this book to any other new parents out there. Great read!

The first couple chapters were good, but it felt like the authors were really stretching to write the whole book. Also, for a Christian resource this was very opinionated and not too biblically backed. It was not bad, but I’m sure there are better biblical parenting books out there!

Great for new parents. This book helped guide conversations with my spouse regarding first time parenting before our first born entered the world.

There are some helpful and encouraging things that I took away, but overall, I didn’t feel as though I learned much.

We used this with a couple who are now parents, and found it a helpful prompt for conversation and discussion (with a few odd bits in it).

I hoped to like this book more, but I just couldn't love it. There were some helpful concepts and good points by the author, and their heart to help parents was evident. However, if I'm being honest, I found the book... boring, and a bit repetitive at times.

A great beginning overview at looking at parenting motivations from a gospel-centered mindset. It's not a "hands on, how to" kind of book.
There are a lot of typos.
