I find this so bad I cannot believe it has been published. Not only are the characters one dimensional, but the writing itself is not even at high school level.
I don't understand there is a whole series of these. Guess there are a lot of people who do like it.

The first book was excellent for the beginning of the story. The second book is full of bad editing. Please remove Jamie, Jamie and more Jamie. The constant reminding of the same boring incident does no good for the book. It is a good story but did not flow very well like the first one did. It is evident the the author has no combat experience and keeps up the charade of knowing what is really in Pope's mind during his battle with criminals. Will try the next one, but if it has the same bad editing, that's the end of this author.

Sam Pope is your new super hero. He got kicked in the head, punched, stabbed, shot even stomped on his spine but he got up and went on to kill them all. Unbelievable but entertainingly violent action packed. I bought a box set of 3 books so....I'm on no.3.

"The Takers" takes us deep into the heart of London’s gritty underworld. The story centers on Sam Pope, a former sniper turned vigilante, who is determined to dismantle organized crime in the city. The narrative picks up pace when Sam crosses paths with a father desperate to find his missing daughter, leading to an explosive confrontation with a ruthless street gang. This encounter sets the stage for a thrilling tale of revenge, justice, and the relentless pursuit of truth. Enright masterfully builds tension, blending high-stakes action with emotional depth. The streets of London are vividly depicted, creating a palpable sense of danger and urgency.

Characters
Sam Pope is a compelling protagonist. His skills as an ex-sniper are put to the test as he navigates a web of criminal activity, all while evading a dedicated task force led by a young inspector. Sam's character is complex— he is relentless and focused, driven by a personal code of justice that makes him a hero in the eyes of those he helps, even as he operates outside the law. The supporting characters, from the desperate father to the young inspector, are well-developed, adding layers of intrigue and human interest to the story.

Narration
Lee Beddow's narration of the audiobook is a standout feature. His performance brings the characters to life, capturing the essence of their personalities and emotions. The pacing of the narration matches the intensity of the plot, keeping listeners engaged from start to finish. Beddow’s ability to convey tension, urgency, and subtle nuances in character interactions adds depth to the listening experience, making "The Takers" an engrossing audiobook.

Themes
At its core, "The Takers" explores themes of justice, vengeance, and redemption. Sam Pope’s journey is not just about taking down criminals but also about seeking redemption for his past actions. The book delves into the moral complexities of vigilantism, questioning where the line should be drawn between right and wrong. The story also highlights the impact of crime on individuals and families, adding an emotional layer to the high-octane action.

Conclusion
"The Takers" is a thrilling ride through London's criminal underworld, with a protagonist who is as skilled as he is complex. Robert Enright's ability to weave action with emotional depth makes this audiobook a must-listen for fans of the genre. Lee Beddow’s narration elevates the story, providing a rich and compelling experience.

Nothing clever about this book, but it was a decent bit of entertainment. It doesn’t try to be anything more than a fast-paced action story and to be fair, it delivers on that. The plot moves quickly, there’s plenty going on and it’s the kind of book you can get through without much effort. It kept me interested enough to keep turning the pages and sometimes that’s all you really want from a read.

The characters aren’t particularly deep or memorable and you can see a lot of the twists coming, but it still works. It’s written in a way that’s easy to follow, with a good amount of tension and momentum. There’s not much in the way of clever dialogue or standout moments, but the action scenes are solid and the pacing is good.

This isn’t the kind of book that leaves a lasting impression and it probably won’t make your favourites list, but it’s a decent way to pass the time if you're after something light, quick and full of movement. Not bad, not brilliant, just a straight-up action story that doesn’t mess around.

Shockingly bad. Poorly written, very poorly edited, just doesn’t make sense in places. Made me wonder if Generative AI was used to create big parts of it and not checked properly - clues are scattered throughout; characters description repetition, sub plot(sons death, wife leaving him) repeated over and over again - boring

Dear Mr Enright, if you haven't already, please, please, hire a good editor.

(I apologise in advance for the harsh review. I realise this may result in me becoming a depraved minor character in a future Enright novel, but so be it.)

There is potential in Sam's character but the book is full of simple mistakes ("within in" anyone?) and scene problems. While I have read a bit about writing fiction (story structures, scene crafting, character development, narrative arcs, outlining, etc.), I have never written a novel myself, so I cannot speak from first-hand experience. However, I am pretty well read and have read a lot of exceptional literature. I am in awe when I read something really good, be it a classic Dickens masterpiece or a notable new author that I've just discovered such as Fredrik Backman. I have my suspicions about how difficult it is to write a good novel and how skilled an author must be to do so. A really good editor is an invaluable part of the process, unless you're a literary genius.

When I finished reading the first Sam Pope novel a day or two ago, I read a few other critical reviews as I was jotting down my own and, while it did seem to me there were quite a lot of repetitive similes in the first book, I thought one reviewer was exaggerating when they pointed out their overuse. However, with that thought fresh in my mind, I started reading Sam Pope #2 and I realised they were right - there are so many occurrences of "like" it's astonishing:

"drawn by the gunshots like a moth to a flame"
"adrenaline pumped through her like a house anthem"
"echoing in every direction like a stray bullet"
"The explosion of blood from his broken nose was like a grenade"
"emerged from the darkness like a demon from the gates of hell"
"crashing into his muscles like a sledgehammer"
"punctured into him like a pin cushion"
"cascaded down his throat like a crimson waterfall"
"leaving behind a smear of blood like a dying slug"
"The floodlights burst down like a raging sun"
"A booming gunshot shook across the port like a roar of thunder"

That's just a quick search through a few chapters. I could go on and on and on...

You're also strangely fixated on raindrops on windows. Although, given that the only weather in the entire book (apart from the war flashbacks) is different varieties of freezing/icy rain, which you describe in almost every scene, I guess that's not too surprising. However, I was curious how one could have gentle explosions of rain droplets, or were you intentionally employing an oxymoron?

"Rain gently pattered against the window, each droplet exploding on impact."

(There are many other contradictions and discrepancies within single sentences throughout the book. It's a little jarring.)

And then there are the combinations of cheap similes and descriptions of rain:

"As the rain drummed against the window like impatient fingers"
"As the rain lashed the poverty-stricken estate like a cat-o’-nine-tails"
"The rain seemed to bounce off her like bullets off of [sic] Superman."
"the lashing rain hitting like freezing daggers"

I want to like your books. I really do. I think Sam has some good stories in him (for which I threw him a couple of stars). I even bought the first 3 books in a box set. But, after reading #1 & #2, I just can't bring myself to read any more of them. There are so many good books out there and reading one is an investment in time - quite a sizeable investment if you're a slow reader like me or they're long books, such as Les Miserables or The Count of Monte Cristo. Given our limited time on this planet, I can't justify spending any more of it on such poorly edited novels. I'm sorry.

I wish you the best of luck with your novel writing career, and I earnestly hope you find a good editor. I'm off now to get started on the couple of dozen books I accumulated over Christmas.

The Takers -

Book two of the Sam Pope series and this book was as good as the first one. Sam, the British version of Jack Reacher, is again tackling the bad guys and being chased by the Metropolitan Police. Hero or criminal - that’s the question. However, everything Sam does is because he cares and even those who are trying to catch him are conflicted as to whether he should be caught or get away with it. The book is full of action and is a real page turner. Book 3 has been downloaded and I will be reading it soon. It’s 5 out of 5 from me. The book can be read as a stand-alone, but you will understand book 2 if you have read book 1 first. More importantly, book 1 is also a great read - so don’t miss out. This should really be made into a film.

The Sam Pope novels are action packed and an easy read. I usually read them after finishing something a bit more heavy and in depth, so these make a light read that doesn’t have a really deep twisting plot.
There is a lot of graphically descriptive violence and it seems Sam is a boarder-line immortal who can be shot, stabbed, beaten, half-drowned, etc, but still overpowers the bad guy. Even when shaking and half unconscious from a beating he can shoot a fly out of the air at 2000 yards.
It is almost like a British ‘Reacher’ character. A good at heart ex-soldier vigilante, discarded by the system overcoming his own demons by beating the living who-har out of the bad guys. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Wow…I have waited for the next Sam Pope novel in anticipation and was not disappointed. Better than ever… Sam the ultimate soldier to the core... to serve and protect in his blood and the most deadly person but also the most caring. In this novel he does all he can to find and rescue, Jasmine, a teenager up ducted for sex slavery. Sam stops at nothing to find her and bring her back to her father. As if this is not a hard enough job he needs to look over his shoulder the whole time for DI Amara Singh, a tenacious and ambitious detective, hell set on arresting Sam.
There is just no way of putting this book down until the end. A must read.

A funny thing about this series. Not sure if it is ha ha funny, or just a quirk of mine but while reading it I found typos that weren't correct. I have this weird quality that I feel compelled to correct or at least make note. They are small mistakes and usually an extra word or a misspell. Okay. I am over myself.

Sam Pope continues to be a bad ass. I am not sure how he recovers from all of the brutality that happen to him by the myriad of bad culprits that are almost as brutal as he is. It seems to me that he should be "torn and tattered" and have definite brain issues with the constant bombardment to his person. He still is "doing the right thing".

An Enjoyable read

I think the storylines and characters are great but I did find the repetitive recaps of the first book annoying and detracted somewhat from my immersion in this second book. I understand the need to engage new readers who may not have read the first book but perhaps this could be done separately to the main story. Of course this is only my opinion and it may not bother other readers. I am moving on to book 3 hoping that this is not a problem for me again. This has the makings of a great series. I am rooting for Sam all the way!

I feel like I was spoiled by The Night Shift. Hopefully, The Takers was just an off episode in the series. I still love the character of Pope, who has a strong and consistent motivation, but the writing wasn't as tight in this book as it was in the first. The plot meandered a little and made it feel disjointed, especially when the focus shifted from the high rise to the girl. The transition wasn't smooth. Aaron's behavior seemed a little far-fetched, almost like it eas unnaturally inserted in order to introduce the second half of the plotline. Good book, but not a great one.

Overall, the story line is good, but the editing is only fair. In one area, Sam is in a particular location doing a particular thing, then suddenly the author has him somewhere else. The author doesn't tie the two locations together or explain the movement. His choice of descriptive words is sometimes inaccurate to describe the scene, emotion or action. And occasionally there are clear grammatical errors. It becomes distracting after a while.

All of that said, the character development is good, and it's an enjoyable read

This was a really good thriller with everything in it that you could ask for. It was well written and the characters were all extremely well portrayed. Sam Pope is a man on a mission wanting to rid the world of criminals but how far can he really go while seemingly on his own. The thing that spoils the story for me are too many printing errors. If these were corrected I would definitely have given it five stars.

I’ve never read this genre before. The hard-core, action packed, flawed hero protagonist, protecting the innocent, who is also hunted by the law. Honestly it was like reading a movie. I immediately wanted him to survive and get the job done because it had to be done. Somehow I think because it was so over-the-top and fast pace the violence wasn’t as traumatic as it could’ve been on this reader. All I know is I have no problem continuing to read this series.

Five Stars

This is only the second book I have read in the Sam Pope series and I am really enjoying the ride. Non stop action with lots of believable characters. Before I read the next book, Long Road Home, I will read the two novellas The Right Reason and Rainfall. A huge pat on the back and a big thank you to the author, Robert Enright. From me another well deserved 5 stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Sam fighting for justice

Sam is gaining friends and a few are realising he is a lot more than a murderer. Whilst working g on a current job he came across a man who was looking for his daughter and was very desperate, to the point he had walked into a den of criminals, Sam had to find 5he man and get more information as to why he was doing something so stupid and dangerous. Excellent book highly recommended.

Hadn't been that impressed with the first book but given that Amazon Kindle was doing this one for 99p I decided to give it another chance. The story was not without excitement and I might have given it a 4 except for a number of irritating aspects in the actual writing. Poor choice of adjectives, improbable character traits, too many maudlin reference to the dead son. Might try another at 99p but not at anything dearer.

Economic writing.

It was a good story but as I had recently read the preceding novel, The Nightshift, I didn't need the constant referrals back to it. It was very irritating and puts me off reading the next in the series. I suppose it mAkes the task of writing much easier, but to me it feels fraudulent. That is why I gave a 40% valuation and recommend others to read one of the other, but definitely not both.

I skimmed through this one. It was repetitive from the first one and the editing was not good.

One point I couldn’t get past was Sam having possession of his sniper rifle that he had had in Kabul. Maybe the British Army is different when it comes to weapons but when I was in the US Army, all weapons belonged to the Army. And they were issued by the armory of the unit you belonged to.

Pope having the same weapon just didn’t ring true to me.

A suitable followup to the first Pope novel. Like the first there's non-stop action and violence but it's in a good cause! This story develops Pope's character and motivation some more, and makes it very clear that he's not just in it for vengeance, but he is very single minded in pursuing justice as he sees it. Part of the story wraps up but there's clearly more to come, hopefully soon!!

The Takers Robert Enright

Book two in this excellent series. Sam Pope removes the worse of the London underworld. To the London Metropolitan police force he is an out of control vigilante. To the general public a hero. Two detectives understand Popes motivation and they respect him. This is a fantastic read. Enjoyed immensely! My highest recommendation.

I've got to say Robert that you (or your editor) are getting better. Still not quite there on the weapons knowledge but the action is full on and the story is either getting more plausible or its growing on me. Was it Danger Mouse who was a cleaner in the precinct but a hero by night! Well worth a read and will, eventually, end up as a film I would say.

Enjoyable

I enjoyed the book but the plot was like so many gone before.
The man Fletcher..good character but needs to be more ruthless..
A loner like Reacher or someone with an partner that ideas can be bounced off....as I say I enjoyed the book and would definitely read the next one.

I would give this book more than 4 stars but the editing was disconcertingly sloppy. Grammar, tense, missing words... all troubling. This is perhaps a necessary issue for self published stories, but it was distracting. That said the story, the pacing and the action scenes were quite good. I will read more.

19-2021. Our hero, Sam Pope, uses his special skills to do some rough justice in London. The author loses a point for all the concussive head shots folks take without apparent significant effect. But, it is very satisfying to see our guy lay waste to all sorts of bad guys. I’ll be back for Pope’s next adventure. Just not today. :-)

The Battle Continues

Sam continues in his plan to clean up the world or at least his little slice of it. He takes on a case of a young girl because of his favored reason...it's the right thing to do but with the law approaching from one side and the criminals from the other, the task difficulty is magnified. Can Sam save the day? It could be close.
