Emry is a Royal - a princess of Enlennd. As is tradition, she must have a knight at her side as her protector. The only way to appoint one is through The Trials. Her Challengers from the five regions of Enlennd must compete for the infamous title of Princess's Knight. The problem, though, is that the people of Enlennd are split into two Rioters and Royals. Finding the perfect knight may be the last of her worries. War is coming to Enlennd.Declan is a Rioter. An upriser. An anarchist. He mistrusts the Jewels - the sovereign family of Enlennd. Yet, he is offering himself up as a Challenger in The Trials. The Mistress, leader of the Rioters, has a mission for him. The first step is for him to become the Princess's Knight. He is ready for the task, until he actually meets Emry and discovers that betraying her would be much more difficult than he'd thought.

The magic in this book is interesting. The color of your eyes will determine the magic you possess. There is a base color which is the main power that each person has and then there are other colors that can be in your eyes while also can give the person more powers and abilities. Each province in this world had its own culture and characteristics. The world-building was amazing. There were so many twists and turns and secrets that I was not expecting. It was a super fun read.
Princess Emerald is one of the main characters. She is a Royal or also known as the Jewels. In the beginning. she is holding The Trials to find her knight. The Trials are a series of competitions to see which man can be a princess's knight. A candidate to be her knight is Declan Sharpe, another main character, from Anexia, the place of Rioters. He is supposed to become Emerald's knight and then capture her to Anexia. Romance blossoms between these two characters and it's very sweet and amazing. I also loved the side characters.
The only things that I did not enjoy were a bit of Emerald's personality and personally, I felt that the book was a bit long, some things could have maybe been cut out.
Review copy was received from Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Of Rioters & Royals is the first book in the new Swift Shadows series, set in an interesting world. It is listed as fantasy but, for me, this falls more into the Romantasy (romance + fantasy) genre, don’t worry though it is YA so everything remains PG.
There is a large backstory presented in the prologue that the reader really needs to set up the world a bit. It prepares the reader for where the world is at in this moment and time, and gets us ready for a new story.
There are a few things this book does well.
The overall plot is interesting. There is a challenge between all of the kingdoms best fighters, for who gets the honor of being Princess Emerald’s Knight Protector. I enjoy books with a competition like this. There is also the ongoing conflict between the Rioters and Royals factions. The hero of the tale, Declan is faced with a dilemma; he is supposed to win the challenge and then kidnap the princess later. Shouldn’t be an issue since he is a Rioter, but he knows the princess and she isn’t the spoiled, pampered Royal he assumed she would be, he questions whether he will be able to follow that order when the time comes.
I liked the world building. Each of the five Realms has specific things it is known for culturally, with its people. Also everyone has some sort of magic, you can tell what kind based on the colors in their eyes. I liked the idea of this, red eyes are for healers, teal means you are fast, other eye colors meant anything from having an earth or water affinity to being able to wield fire. Princess Emerald, know to her friends as Emry has Silver eyes and those seem to be the best ones you can have since she could do almost anything.
I also really enjoyed the idea of Pair magic. One person can be bound to another and share their magic across a bond. It is like the twining of two souls and not to be done lightly since there are some drawbacks to it as well.
Both Emry and Declan have some tragedies in their past and because of that they can be a little ruthless. There are a few times this comes out in the book. Neither is about killing to protect what they hold dear.
There are a few things which could have been a little better.
My largest issue is that Emry seems so overpowered really. She is great at EVERYTHING, it would have been nice to see her struggle a little with something, even if it was just needlepoint or swimming. For some of the story, it fell into the tell you instead of show you category. Emry is tenacious when she is trying to learn something and does it until she gets it. We see this when she just knows how to do certain things. It just would have played better for me if I actually saw her doing the work to learn something physical already, then my buy in would have been greater.
The end is also a little rushed as they pull in a few of the other young rulers to their side to fight against the big bad and save the kingdom. The fighting was a little off to the side and off page for some of it and then quick and done. That is both a good and bad thing as the details of fighting didn’t get tedious, but I did want just a little more time spent on the final battle.
This is an easy, entertaining read. If you are not huge into fantasy, I think it will read a little better, as it is also a love story and doesn’t go into overwhelming detail on some of the plot points. The characters are likeable, the world is interesting and I enjoyed the romance. If the next book is about Cit (Emry’s sister) and Parin, I’d definitely continue on with the series.
Thank you to the author, M.L. Greye for providing me with an e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
Of Rioters and Royals was nothing like I had expected, it was an incredible fantasy story. I think one of the main reasons I enjoyed this so much was how much world building was put into this, as well as how descriptive the author was of the magic system. I didn’t have to guess on how things worked and why certain people had magical powers. You could tell the author put a lot of thought and effort into this world and she didn’t leave any plot holes. The magic system blew me away, I loved how you could tell what people’s powers were based on what colors their eyes were! What an interesting and unique way to show someone your magical abilities.
The overall plot of this book was captivating and again the author did a great way of giving us information at the beginning of the story, but not overwhelming us with too much information. We follow Princess Emerald as she begins her search for a knight to protect her. Someone is chosen from each surrounding kingdom to come forward and try to become the princesses’ knight. They all must go through very intense trials and whoever comes out as the winner will be her knight. For a long time now, the Royals, which are basically the palace folk, and Rioters have been in a war with each other. Rioter’s feel as though they are getting mistreated by the Royals. Declan is chosen to fight to become the knight, but he may have an ulterior motive.
The amount of plot twists this book had really blew me away. While I have to admit some parts in this book were slow paced, I didn’t mind because of how rich the plot was. Another thing I struggled with was at the end a lot of characters were pulled in that were never discussed before. They seemed like pretty important ones, but we didn’t get to know a lot about them. In all honesty, this book was very creative and kept me wanting more.
E-book provided by the author in exchange for an honest review!
Of Rioters & Royals by M. L. Greye is a cleverly written fantasy novel that just so happens to include three of my favorite bookish tropes; warring factions, a competition, and unique abilities that set people apart from one another!
I wasn't expecting to find my latest obsession going into this novel, but that's exactly what happened, and boy am I glad there's going to be a sequel!
It's no secret that I've been in a weird reading slump all month (where I've wanted to read, but had trouble finding the motivation), and this definitely helped me get out of that!
I look forward to finding out what's next for these characters, and will definitely be purchasing a copy of this book to add to my favorites shelf! ❤
This is actually my first time reading Greye’s book and honestly, i don’t regret it. The book feels so adventurous and it’s a fantasy but not too much fantasy, like it didn’t get too meh if you know what i mean.
What i like the most about this book is that the turn of events are just amazing. Their are so many twists when it comes to the story and it’s what makes this book so good! I honestly enjoyed reading this!

WOW. This book was incredible!
The world building was great; I was fully immersed in this world with these amazing characters, and intriguing magic system (which was personally one of my favorite parts)!
The romance was done really well, and I was very pleased that it didn't take over the plot, like many romances in fantasies do.
The plot takes so many turns I never could've predicted, and I was so interested to see what was going to happen next!
However, this book was missing something for me, and I can't put my finger on it. Which is why I didn't give it a full 5 stars
M.L. Greye is an incredible writer, and I can't wait to read what she writes in the future. I will definitely be picking up the sequel!
The world building had a unique point that I hadn’t seen so woven through the story before. Color defining eyes. All sorts of crazy colors and combinations that give the person with those eyes a unique set of skills. I thought this was fascinating and loved learning all of the different gifts it allow a person to have. It was easy to follow the differing nations and even though a third party was thrown in at the end I believe they’ll really play a part in book two allowing this story to grow even larger.
I was smitten with the romance too. Declan and Emry were such a sweet and precious couple. The trope was along the lines of a childhood romance. They had known each other prior then were separated for years to be thrown back together when Emry was in search for a Knight. I enjoyed their banter and watching them come together as a power couple. They were able to communicate and love one another for who they are. The idea of pairs (a play on mates) worked really well for this too.
At times I felt there was too much focus on describing rooms, landscapes, etc. I personally don’t like having a lot of flowery writing and want to get to the heart of the story and narrative. By the second half of the book I felt this was really the case. I also noticed that somethings were along the lines of ACOTAR Series (A Court of Thorns and Roses). Which was very interesting to me. I have no idea if this was inspired by that or anything, I just noticed some quirks that were familiar. This didn’t stop me from loving the story on its own though.
I appreciated that the plot kept moving forward with steady action, but also the quiet moments that I love so much. I love watching relationships form, families get some time together, and friendships bond. This had all of that and more. I can’t wait to read book two!
Overall audience notes: - Young adult fantasy - Language: none - Romance: kisses, a no-detailed fade to black scene - Violence: physical, mentions of past torture, magic, fires, drownings, explosions, skirmishes
Before I get started on my review, I just wanted to say that I received a free copy of "Of Rioters & Royals" from the author in exchange for an honest review. I hope you enjoy it!
I have always loved stories that revolved around princesses and knights in shining armor, but I actually don't have a lot of books in my collection revolving around princesses or knights. I was literally so happy when I read that "Of Rioters & Royals" had a princess/knight story-line. However, this book is not about a typical princess in distress who needs a knight to save her. Princess Emerald, aka Emry, is an independent, adventurous, bad-ass type of princess. Our hero in the story, Declan, is a Rioter and a Challenger for the title as the Princess's Knight. He is a very intelligent and skilled individual who definitely possesses the qualities to become a knight.
One of the many things that I loved about this book was how the author expressed such creativity in her writing. It's as though M.L. Greye really wanted her readers to use their imagination as they read her book. The author's vivid imagery was truly impeccable. I thought it was so cool how the author created her characters to have special magical abilities depending on their eye color. For example, those with ruby colored eyes have the power to heal, while people with orange colored eyes can manipulate fire. There are so many characters with different eye colors and abilities in this story, which is truly amazing. Declan has teal colored eyes, so he has super speed. Emry has silver colored eyes, but I'll keep her ability a little secret ;) You need to read the book to find out! I will say though that her super powers are totally unique and bad-ass.
Another part of the story that I enjoyed were The Trials the Challengers had to endure. The First Trial consisted of an insane obstacle course that reminded me of American Ninja Warrior yet more deadly. Another Trial was a fun "Where's Emry?" challenge, where the Challengers have to find Emry. This seems like a simple challenge, but Emry cleverly utilizes her mysterious Silver-eyed abilities to hide from the Challengers. One of the last challenges was hand-to-hand combat. If I were to pick one flaw in the book, it would be this hand-to-hand combat scene. I felt like it was over so quickly. I just wish this Trial would have been longer and more descriptive.
The book's plot line did not entirely revolve around The Trials to be the Princesses's Knight. War between regions was a huge factor in the plot line as well. I feel that readers already know the typical war and betrayal between regions, so I feel like I do not need to touch upon this issue that much.
When it came to the point of the story where the big surprise/twist was presented, my reaction was a big WOW! I really never would have expected it! My eyebrows were literally up to my forehead and my eyes even bugged out! Such a well thought out plot twist! I have read plot twists before where I sometimes felt ruined the plot or were just unnecessary. This plot twist, however, made the book much more interesting and dynamic!
One of the last things I want to talk about is the relationship between Emry and Declan. Thinking about them together just puts a smile on my face! Emry and Declan make such the perfect Pair ;) They have both chemistry and history. The chemistry between Emry and Declan is one of the best that I have ever read. Their understanding of one another is just next level. Their strength and wisdom perfectly compliments one another as well. Here is one quote from Declan that makes me absolutely swoon: "She was so easy to kiss, to hold... to love."
Overall, "Of Rioters & Royals" by M.L. Greye was truly an astounding book. The author's use of vivid imagery and enabling her readers to really play with their imagination just really won me over. I have a high respect for authors who express such creativity and uniqueness to their books. Embry and Declan were also such a joy to read about as well. This was a well deserved 5 star book, and I look forward to reading more books from M.L. Greye in the future.
I really enjoyed this book and I need book 2 now! I enjoyed the plot and found myself attached to the characters (I need my babies to be ok), I was expecting this to be a hate to love story that focused on the competition to be the Princess’ Knight which would have a made a good story to me so the special abilities added an extra bonus. I loved the politics and the villain. The story kept me on edge. I loved that Emry was a strong female but relatable (she was funny and crushing on Declan) she felt like someone I’d want to be friends with as opposed to being a character that is so perfect she doesn’t even seem human. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed Throne of Glass (this is more PG than TOG lol) or The Red Queen...... I was sent the ebook in exchange for an honest review
I really enjoyed this book, so many twists and turns! At start of the book I thought it would be mostly about the trial to become the knight for the princess, but soon it turned out there was much more too it. I loved the unexpected twists and am looking forward to the sequel!
The author provided the e-book in exchange for an honest review - and I’m so glad she did! Although it was a little hard to get into at first, once things picked up (which didn’t take that long!) I was absolutely hooked. I couldn’t put it down. I liked Emry a lot, and the whole concept of your eye color denoting what kind of magic you have was unique and fun and well done! I’m very excited for the next to come out!
Wow what a special story! I’m a big fan of YA fantasy. The first book of this series was full of adventure, romance, and details of a world I wish I could be a part of. I was immersed while reading this story. Princess Emerald will soon have her trials to find her knight. This is standard for all princesses of Enlennd so that they may be protected from harm that may come their way. But Emerald isn’t your standard princess...she’s independent, strong, and powerful with a desire to bring peace throughout the kingdom of Enlennd. Enlennd is a country divided between Rioters (common folk) and Royals (royal leaders of the country) but soon the kingdom with have a bigger problem on their hands. I do wish the ending didn’t feel rushed but nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The relationships in this story have so much love. The concept of magic and powers the characters possess have so much creativity. A well thought out story. This is definitely a recommended read.
I love this book! There are so many elements in this story that I absolutely love. To see my full review click the link for my blog! https://laurenbodiford123.wordpress.c...

Recently I’ve been in and out of a reading slump, but “Of Rioters and Royals” finally got me out of it. The story begins with a prologue where you’re introduced to the history of the world, which I found to be a little heavy for the start. However, once the book hooked me I was hooked. I was intrigued by the path that M. L. Greye decided to take the plot, the characters always surprising me so that I was never bored. I loved the unpredictability, because usually after having read so many YA fantasy books you feel like you know what’s going to happen. The events of this book were constantly surprising me in the best way.
Eye colour demonstrates the type of magic that someone has, the flecks of colour showing further dimensions of the characters’ powers. I really enjoyed how seamlessly the magic system was incorporated into the world, where it felt natural and logical.
Often in young adult fantasy books that have romance at their core, the romance is too heavy and consumes the characters so that they have no personality for themselves other than the fact that they’re in love. That was NOT the case with this book, where the romance is beautifully written. While “Of Rioters and Royals” might be in part about a princess finding her knight, the knights are not used to suggest that the women of the novel are weak. Emry is both caring and fiercely strong, standing for who and what she believes in – and she will not let anything stand in the way of her achieving her goals.
Overall, I thought that this book was a solid introduction to the fantasy world and offers many possibilities for the rest of the series!
When I first started reading the prologue, I was a little bogged down with the sheer amount of information presented in order to set the foundation for the book. It was not particularly exciting for me, which put a bit of a sour taste in my mouth when I was starting chapter one. My palate was immediately cleansed once I dove into this riveting story full of magic, adventure, plot twists, and romance.
I was really intrigued by the idea of a person’s eye color predetermining the elemental magic that he or she would would harness. For example, Declan is a teal, so he has unnatural speed and partial control over nature. Princess Emerald on the hand is a silver, which is incredibly rare as are her magical abilities.
I loved the The Hunger Games esque style Trials that Declan and the other challengers faced in order to procure the prestigious position of Princess Emerald’s Knight. While Declan originally volunteers for the Trials as a means to gain access to the Princess so he can kidnap her and bring her back to the leader of the Rioters, things become complicated when he realizes that he would be betraying the girl that he saved all those years ago. Overall, I think that Greye did a great job of immersing us into this magical universe, and I am intrigued to see how her series continues to unfold.
Thank you to M.L. Greye for providing an ebook of this story in exchange for an honest review. This had no bearing on the outcome of this review.
"I'm still upset with you," he said softly into her hair, "but you don't deserve to suffer alone."
If you are a fan of Sarah J. Maas this is the perfect book for you. It's really a mix of Throne of Glass and ACOWAR. Personally, I loved the beginning: there's a Trial in which 5 Champions have to win the position of King of the princess (a sort of personal bodyguard). This part is full of secrets and misteries and it made me so curious! And this is the part similar to Throne of Glass. Then we move to ACOWAR and we come to point in which the main characters become a Pair, or mates... it's really the same. Unfortunately, I really don't like when 2 people find out that it's destiny that put them together and I don't understand how someone can tolerate that his/her boyfriend/girlfriend reads all his/her thoughts. I think it's very frustrating! However the plot is really involving and Emry is a badass with great powers so you are gonna love her.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The people of Enlennd are a people divided. Those that support the Jewels (the sovereign) are called the Royals and those that do not - are called the Rioters. Emerald (Emry) is a princess of Enlennd, a Royal and the time to find her Princess's Knight has come - a time where a challenger from each of the five regions of Enlennd must compete in trials against each other to win the coveted role. The Princess's Knight is bonded with the princess and entasked with being her bodyguard, a position of great importance that people would literally kill for.
Declan is from Anexia and a regional challenger for the Princess's Knight trials. Oh, and he's a Rioter. He distrusts the Royals wholeheartedly but is instructed to win the trials and infiltrate the sovereign at the request of the Mistress, the leader of the Rioters. He has a secret mission that starts with him beating out the competitors from the other four regions. But as Declan starts getting deeper into the affairs of the Royals and closer to Emry he might just discover that things aren't as black and white as he once thought.
I was sent this book for an honest review by the author and I'm really glad that they did as I'm not sure that I would have come across this otherwise. Overall, I really enjoyed this book - I was hooked and read the whole thing in a single sitting.
I am absolute trash for any book that involves some sort of ruthless Hunger Games style competition and this book gave me just that. I thought that was all that was being offered (and I was completely happy with that) but the story was so much more twisty, political and adventure filled. You think the story would be going one way and then it would be flipped on it's head and I couldn't guess where it was going to go next.
My absolute favourite part was the magic system/abilities which I wasn't introduced to in the blurb. In this world an individual's eye colour determines what kind of power that they have such as super strength, speed, elemental manipulation and even shadow travelling. M. L. Greye takes this even further by introducing flecks of other eye colours which create infinite possibilities and combinations of powers - something I'm yet to come across in any other book. I can't wait to see what other combinations that the second book introduces.
If I had any lesser enjoyable parts then it would have to be the romance - not that the romance wasn't good - it just was a bit heavy and soppy for my tastes. I also felt like there could have been a touch more editing in the introductory chapter to completely grab the reader from the get go, but as soon as you're in you wont be able to stop reading.
If you're looking for a high stakes, magical and political fantasy novel that takes old tropes and reinvents them into something original then definitely pick this book up. I can't wait for book two to see where Emry and Declan's story takes them next. And lastly, thanks again to M. L. Greye for this my way!
Of Rioters and Royals follows a divided nation (Enlennd) there are people from 5 different regions (Enn - the capital - Kruth, Anexia, The Midlands and Glavenryl) who either support the royals (who are referred to as the Jewels) or the rioters. The book centres on The Trials in which challengers from each region compete to become the Princesses Knight (bodyguard)
Our main characters are Princess Emerald (Emry) and Declan Sharpe who are from Enn and Anexia respectively. We follow Declan in the trials, who initially only enters because he is a supporter of the rioters and with the agreement from The Mistress and his father, he wishes to become the Princesses Knight so he can infiltrate the royals from within. However the first twist is that Declan had previously met Emry and saved her life 5 years prior to the trials. We then embark on a story of young love and romance, whilst Declan is trying his upmost to keep a promise he made to Emry's dearly departed brother Ewan (Prince Jasper) to keep his sister safe.
I was sent this ebook by the author for a review and this was the first book for me that I have reviewed this way, and I am so happy I said yes, as to be honest I don't think I would of found this book without knowing about it and I actually highly rate the book, and a totally chased up a preview of the sequel!
My positives: I love the map included in the book, along with the fact that the chapters are kept quite short (I struggle with chapters that go on forever) The bond between both sisters was so lovely to read and it felt so nice to read a fantasy book where sisters are not fighting for a throne or consort. I love the romance that blossoms and is continuing to build between Dec and Emry, some of their encounters and interactions actually had me laugh out loud at just how the main characters bounced off each other.
I also really love the new concept of an ability system based on eye colour, that is such an original idea and I love the way that it is portrayed, with many characters holding a base colour with flecks of other colours, did I mention the fact that each colour represents a different ability, ie a base teal eye colour has superspeed? Plus it's such a lovely little bonus because nowhere in the synopsis would you even expect that abilities were in the book.
Now my negatives: I didn't struggle with much in this book, except for the prologue and the first few pages of chapter 1 to be honest, the prologue was quite hard to retain the information as you are given just a couple of pages to remember each different region, and the reasons behind the feud as well as remembering a number of characters and how they are connected, I think I counted the introduction of 14 characters in 10 pages which to me is quite a lot and I did struggle to keep up with everyone to the point I made a little family tree.
But other than that this book was fantastic, the writing is brilliant, and the twists you wouldn't be able to predict, I found myself finishing the book in 3 days, which for me is quick, I reckon if I was not at work it would of taken less time, just because of how engrossing the book is! Also for me it was nice to not be able to compare this book to others, Of Rioters and Royals is it's own book and I am looking forward to the two other books planned for this trilogy
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading young adult fantasy, and romantasy. To be honest I enjoyed it that much I'd even suggest to others to read it for a trip out of their genre comfort zone.
I was lucky enough to be approached form the author for a chance to review her book with a copy she provided. This does not change my opinion of the book, nor am I rating it higher since I was given a free copy.
I went into this book with not much expectations. The last book I reviewed for an author wasn't for me and I just couldn't get into it. And the beginning of this book I thought I would have the same fate, especially with the textbook-like beginning of dumping of information about the fantasy world. But once I got passed that point the book took off and it absolutely fell in love.
First of all, I absolutely adored Declan and Emry's names! They are so cute and fiery and totally fit the characters. I hate when a book uses names I can't pronounce, so I found it refreshing to actually know how to pronounce these names!😂❤️
In the first couple chapters of the book we learnt that people get their power from the color of their eyes. It really reminded me of the Graceling book-- except I loved this book far more! I love that even just a fleck of color in someones eye could tell others what power that person possessed. It was such a fun addition to the book.
Now I'm going to skip ahead to some of my favorite parts-- so bear with me skipping around and trying to keep up with my fast-paced mind.😂
When one of the trials consisted of the Challengers having to find Emry while she went and hid-- I just *knew* That Declan would win that trial. YASSSS!! It was so fun to see Emry run around and hide and all the Challengers try to find her.
The ball that was thrown was such a sweet scene that had me swooning.😍 When Declan couldn't help but keep his eyes glued to Emry--😩😩😩 Y'all I want a Declan! I pretty much spent majority f this book swooning over Declan and I'm sure all this review is is going to be gushing over my love for my new bookish boyfriend.😍
Okay when it comes to light that Emry and Declan can't be more than 30 feet away from each other.😏 I'm not gonna lie.. I kind of liked it.🙊 Like now my new OPT will always be by each other's side-- YASSS!😩👏🏻 And don't even get me started how they were married and didn't know it! Best. Twist. EVER!😩❤️👏🏻 And I thought I couldn't swoon anymore.😏
Overall, I went into this book not expecting much or anything special. But hole guacamole y'all! I was blown away! Like this I one of my favorite reads of 2019 so far and a solid five star reads AND a spot on my favorites shelf.😍 So now, if y'all will excuse me, I am going to gush and force all of my friends to read this book.👏🏻

**I was sent a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review! @the_shared_shelf **
This is my first read book from M L Greye and I was excited to read Of Rioters & Royals after reading the synopsis. It sounded like one I might pick up off the shelf and devour, much like Cruel Prince or the Red Queen.
Of Rioters & Royals is about the long standing battles between the Royals and Rioters of the country. The two main characters, Emerald and Declan, are forced together through The Trials - a competition to find a Knight for Princess Emerald. Together they discover hidden truths, secrets about themselves and each other, as well as how to find their place within the feuding between the Rioters & Royals.
I struggled to get into the book. It felt like there was a LOT of describing characters, actions, locations and details. I found myself getting confused and overwhelmed with the explicit details. I also found myself skimming some parts because I didn't feel they were crucial to the story telling (ie: explicit detail to the bath faucet and the water coming out of it). It was a lot of information and detail that took away from the story. Once I figured was able to skim parts it was easy to read.
The plot line is great and there is definitely a story to tell. However, it was very reminiscent of so many other dystopian novels and almost crammed every possible feature in the story. From the eye colors to special powers, to the trials and the Damsel in distress...it wasn't necessarily anything new. As a scenario grew in suspense I felt each one was fairly predictable as well except for the revelation focused on The Mistress. That one threw me for a loop and I had to reread to see what I had missed. The ending was lackluster for me as well, but I love a bit of drama and suspense. It seemed that there wasn't really a battle to be won because of course Em & Decc pulled together all their (newly formed allies, that were opponents previously) to defeat the big bad villain that really didn't pose a threat.
With this being the 1st book in a series, I'm intrigued about book 2. I want to know how Emry & Decc make the Pairing work and ultimately save the world.

The problem, though, is that the people of Enlennd are split into two categories: Rioters and Royals. Finding the perfect knight may be the last of her worries. War is coming to Enlennd. Declan is a Rioter. • • MY THOUGHTS OMG THAT ENDING!! WHAT!! Okay so, i enjoyed this one more than i expected too!! And i’m so happy about it! The magic system in this was incredible! The concept of what eye color you have decide what magical power you have was amazing. I don’t think i’ve ever read anything like this before actually! Aaaand this had so many tropes that i adore🌸 Like trials or challenges. I’m a sucker for those! And friends to lover🥺
The world building in this and how well everything is written is beyond amazing! There is so much work put into this. The story, these characters and the whole magic system was so captivating! And these characters. I would literally die for them. Emry and Declan is probably one of the most cutest couple ever! Their relationship just got better and better! And Declan is the best!! I love how lost he is at times😂 He started off as a macho man who could run the fastes, but ended up being confused all the time! I just seriously really loved this book! I’m in awe honestly! And super happy with this one♥️ If your looking for an epic fantasy with the cutest romance, this is it! Highly recommend this🌸 •

I received a free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. I loved Of Rioters and Royals! The story follows princess Emry (a Royal) and Declan (a Rioter) who are brought together for the Princess Trials. Both have ulterior motives as each represents two factions vying for power in the country of Enlennd. A Royal supports the current ruling monarchs while the Rioters work to wrest control from the monarchy because of their failure to protect the people. The reader can tell where some of the story will go (which makes it a fun read) but there is so much going on that the reader will continually be surprised by the story arc.
After the Princess Trials are complete, both Emry and Declan are faced with issues of loyalty and trust. An attack on the palace galvanizes circumstances and throws both down a new path. In the meantime, their relationship is full of surprises as they reveal their magic to one another.
The magic system is also really interesting and keeps the reader guessing! The major magic a person possesses is reflected in a person’s eye color (such as teal for speed) and a lesser power is manifested through a second, speckled color (such as strength).
Likes: I really liked the magic system and I thought the history of the country of fleshed out well. I also loved Emry! She’s complex and strong.
Recommended for: Anyone who likes fantasy, YA, and romance.
Ages: There is violence, but it isn’t overly vicious. Romance is also clean. I’d recommend it for teens and ups. While it is YA, I had a lot of fun reading it as an adult.
First, I would like to thank the author for a free ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.
Of Rioters and Royals was so good. It was right up my alley in regards to genre and it did not disappoint. I loved the plot and the characters - not to mention how the eyes showed each person’s abilities. Whether or not it was, I saw it as a creative twist on the popular phrase, “the eyes are the window to the soul”.
Going back to the plot I cannot believe how many unexpected turns there were. You think you know where it’s going and then bam! New direction. It was refreshing and pleasant to read. Greye did an insanely good job with keeping a good pace and making sure we, as readers, would never be bored while reading. There were plenty of action action scenes and just the right amount of romance (which was cute to read, honestly).
Along with a brilliantly thought out plot, the character just as well-developed. Emry and Declan were so much fun to follow with their sarcastic taunts and jabs that can only be described as endearing. Romance played a big role, but so did friendship - something that definitely needs more spotlight novels. Kudos to Greye for hitting that point. Of course, as with every human and character, there are inevitable flaws and the heartfelt moments between all the different characters was a perfect way for the reader to be introduced to them.
I thoroughly look forward to the next book in the Swift Shadows Series - Entwined Paths and would recommend this to any and every one. Of Rioters and Royals is definitely worth the read!
First of all, I want to thank M. L. Greye for sending me an ecopy of her book, Of Rioters and Royals, in exchange for my honest review. This the first book in her new series Swift Shadows, and I have to say I can’t wait for the next installment! I think probably one of the most difficult and important parts of writing a Fantasy type novel is building a world for readers that has depth, life, and history. Greye definitely excelled in this area, giving the reader information about past generations of political strife, as well as explaining the cultural customs of the different regions. However this information is given without detracting from the storyline or pacing, which I really appreciated. Of Rioters and Royals is about a nation divided between two political factions. One side is unhappy with the way the royal family has managed the country, and wish to see them dethroned (the Rioters), while the other side believing themselves to be true patriots, remain loyal to the crown (the Royals). The main character Declan is the son of one of the Rioters leaders, and has been sent on a mission. A mission to take part in and win The Trials in order to become Princess Emerald’s personal body guard, so that he may then kidnap her and use her as a bargaining tool to further the Rioters cause. However once meeting Princess Emerald, Declan finds that betraying her is going to be more challenging than he thought. This book will certainly keep you guessing, with many unexpected twists! I definitely recommend you check out the debut novel of this series!
First of all, I would like to say 'thank you' to M L Greye for providing me with a free e-copy of this story for an honest review.
Secondly, let's delve right in.
Those who were covered in filth tended to be frowned upon by those who could afford to never get dirty.
Ennland is a country divided in five regions: the Kruth Mountains, Glavenryl, Anexia, Enn and Midlands, regions which are at peace until a plague reaches its borders and the capital (Enn) does not send the help that one of the regions (Anexia) desperately needs. That is the spark that ignites the appearance of the Rioters , a group of people against the family who currently holds the throne, i.e., the Royals. Led by the mysterious Mistress (whose identity when revealed was a downright shock for me), the Rioters aim to move against the current king and choose a champion who will fight for them (albeit, without outsiders knowing that he's fighting for them) in the Princess's Trials. All five regions of the country send a representative to fight the Trials to become Princess Emerald's (Emry) Knight. Enter Declan, the Anexian and Rioter representative, who is sent by the Mistress to win the Trials, become the princess's knight and steal her from her family so the Rioters get the upper-hand and start negotiating with the king. All in all a good plan until Declan realises he actually knows her from his past and she isn't the spoiled and pampered princess everyone said he would be kidnapping.
Characters
Emry - Silver-eyed, fierce, loyal to those in need, even if that means going against her father, the king. Declan - Teal-eyed, kind, willing to fight the good fight while wrestling with shadows from his own past. What I liked: People's magical abilities being revealed by the colours in their eyes: blue for people with water affinities, silver for people with shadow affinities, orange for fire, red for healers, and so on. It really felt like wearing their heart on their sleeves, except they were wearing their power in their eyes, which feels like a really excellent portrayal of eyes being windows to your soul. Also, the unexpected identity of the Mistress and the fact that there were people amongst Royals willing to go against their current position to fight for what felt right. What could have been done better: I liked the beginning when Emry saw Declan for the first time and we got a glimpse into their common background but I feel like, throughout the book, the details were trying to convince me just how perfect they were for one another. I liked that Dec listened to Emry's explanations and took her background into consideration when he found out the truth but I am not sure it was willingness to listen so much as having no other choice, being bound by the "no more than thirty feet apart" rule. I love the idea of people being there through all discomfort for their loved ones, as Dec for Emry, but I feel like the ceremony left him no other choice, and love should always be about choosing to do right by your significant other.
The villains were slightly less portrayed than I would've liked. I think I could've done with less description of how Dec and Emry were right for one another, and more with V & V (hah, now I see that both their names start with the same letter. Coincidence? Maybe yes, maybe no.) details. None of the two showed proper character depth to be truly considered a threat, given all the book revealed about Emry's and Declan's abilities, but maybe that's something for book two.
Emry can do EVERYTHING. Which is... overwhelming. Not because I don't like fierce, independent female characters, but because in stories, as in real life, I value effort over talent and combined with her position as a princess felt a little bit too much, in my opinion. I would've enjoyed her actually having difficulties in doing something. I remember the story mentioning she tried months before mastering the dance, but anything she tries in the present she just seems to nail it from the first attempt.
World-building: I tried reading this book some weeks ago but I was so tired and the prologue of Of Rioters & Royals isn't something that I should've read without being completely rested. It wasn't that it was hard to understand, but the names and the details were a lot to take in. However, when the time was right (which was at the beginning of last week), I went through the prologue with ease and I understood absolutely everything.
What I liked I liked that the story has a map and that it is easy to understand and follow. I liked the prologue and the fact that all regions had something specific for their people. I like the division between the Rioters and Royals and that there's a competition involving knights and them going through ordeals.
Plot What I liked I looooooved how I expected the story to go one point and it went completely somewhere else. I had expected it to be solely about romance, it wasn't. I thought it would be focused on the Trials, it wasn't. It was a combination of love, and court intrigue and politics and knights and friendship and shadows of the past and I really enjoyed not knowing where it would take me most of the time. What could've been done better I think the ending was a little rushed and maybe that is why I didn't feel the realness of the female villain. Maybe it was because it was just setting up the plot for book two but it felt a little bit too abrupt, given that this was bound to happen since the middle of the book.
All in all, good world building, good plot, would definitely enjoy more character depth on both villains and secondary characters and looking forward to the sequel. :)
It has elements of The Hunger Games, Robin Hood, A Court of Thorns and Roses and a little bit of Hogwarts vibes in the castle during festivities. If you loved these, you will definitely enjoy this one.
In this world where Rioters and Royals have such bad blood between them, they need a miracle to reunite the kingdom. Declan and his family are Rioters. Emry and her family are Royals. Everyone knows that war is going to happen at some point. King Onyx knows his daughter, Emerald, needs a sworn knight to protect her before the war comes.
When Declan signed up to be a challenger in the Knight Trials, he had no idea that the princess he was aiming to protect, was none other than his best friends little sister. Ewan had been Dec's best friend, right up until his family was attacked and Dec was forced to flee with Emry. He never learned of their true identities and didn't see Emry again until the trials many years later.
His mission was to win the trial so he could abduct the princess and bring her back to the Rioters so they could force negotiations with the king. But now that he knows it's Emry, where do his loyalties lie? With his family and country or with the girl he's spent years dreaming about?
The magic system is unique and I absolutely love it! Their eye color tells what abilities they have. Teals are freaky fast, reds are healers, greens have an affinity for nature, etc. This story has so many fascinating aspects and I can't get enough of it. Time to read the 2nd book,
Thank you to author, M.L. Greye for reaching out to me and asking I read and review her book. All opinions of the book are my own.
What stood out right away to me is this book has a very interesting magic system involving a person’s eye color. Each eye color defines what types of powers a person has. And I don’t think I’ve read a book with that kind of magic, so that was pretty cool.
Princess Emry is about to be assigned a knight and to find one the challengers must go through a trial. One of those challengers is Declan, who is there for other reasons. Will he win the trials and be her knight? Or something more?
What I Liked:
*I liked the different magic system in this book where everyone’s eye color determines their powers. I don’t think I’ve read a book with that magic before, so I thought that was very creative and unique.
*If you like romance in a YA fantasy, this one has a sweet romance. It’s not insta love but Emry and Declan have a past that we don’t know about until he comes to court as a challenger. Then we learn how they met before. I love how they are a Pair, no love triangles here!
*There is action, secrets revealed and twists I wasn’t expecting. It’s a story between good and evil which is always inspiring.
*I like Emry’s sisterly bond with Citrine, they were fun together. They are best friends and I’m glad they have each other.
Things That Made Me Go Hmm:
*The beginning with the prologue almost made me dread reading this story. But that’s just me, I’ve learned I have a hard time getting into books with long prologue giving the history about a kingdom, because it feels like a textbook. I would rather learn history throughout the story.
*The prologue threw me a bit off so I didn’t really get into the story until halfway through and once I did, it’s a very quick read.
*Character wise – Emry is obviously the main character who will have more powers than anyone and is a leader, I expected that. But I was drawn more to Declan because he is the one affected when some secrets are revealed.
Final Thoughts: I enjoyed the twists in the story and kudos to the magic system being unique and refreshing. There is romance, action and a fight between good and evil. I think this was a solid first book for a series!
So, I just want to start off with I’m not one to just read a book because someone asked me to leave an honest review. Unless it’s something I feel I might like. After reading the synopsis first I felt like this would be a good book and decided to read and see what adventure this book would take me on. After all I love myself a good fantasy and the name Declan.
The book is as definitely filled with twists and turns and had me on my toes as well as good characters who carried the story along. Kept it moving with motives that drove to the ending. The unique fantasy aspect of eyes showing what power someone has was absolutely brilliant! I’ve never seen someone even think of something like that before and it really intrigued me.
There were points in the book where I was like: “wait!!! Hold on! No! That can’t happen!!” And others where I was “um yes! I dig this!” Definitely for those fans who want a good solid read that is easy to read. Easy in the sense that it’s easy to follow and know what’s going on without conflicting issues clouding the main plot.
I really can’t wait to read the next book and see what happens to our pair. I don’t want to give away the story. So as a fan of many of the best sellers out there, I strongly advise you to pick up this book! Give it a shot. I really enjoyed this read!
Thank you to the author for sending my a copy of Rioters and Royals.
Of Rioters and Royals follows a world cleaved in two by the ongoing feud between the royals and the rioters. Amidst the tension and with the threat of war impending down on the country, Challengers from each region of the country must contend to be Princess Emerald’s Knight and protector. But within the divided nation where not everyone is who they appear to be, Princess Emerald must navigate The Trials and uncover the shrouded pasts of those around her in order to protect the future of the country.
This book had so many detailed elements that added so much depth to the story: the ongoing tension between the royalty and the rioters; the intricate magic system; the detailed backstories of the characters and the amazing world building. I loved the magic system with the eye colours relating to different powers and abilities, as well as the concept of transferring light to give a person life. Emry was an amazing protagonist, who was not only strong and independent but determined to unite the country. I’d definitely recommend to anyone who likes fantasy books with clever magic systems and amazing characters.
Emery and Declan were quite the duo in book one of Rioters and Royals. Watching the two of them work out their feelings for one another and their allegiance to their people was wonderful. And the side characters were lovely too. Piran was probably my favorite side character, which I didn't expect, but the other royal characters that we met in the second half of the book were great too. The romance and adventure weaved together to make a compelling read. Once I started reading, I found myself sneaking in a few pages here and there just to know what was going to happen next. There were many twists and turns that you couldn't see coming and it was great!
