The world as they know it is gone. Survival is the only law. When Lark and Soren escaped from San Judas, all they wanted was their freedom. Soren was desperate to rescue his younger brother from an abusive guardian, and Lark ached for a fresh start in life. What they found instead was a world destroyed — a country ravaged by drought, famine, and violent storms. Ghost towns line the highway, houses lay abandoned, and the few people who remain are struggling to survive. Lark is reeling from the loss of her best friend, and Soren will stop at nothing to find his brother. But when the gang is taken hostage by an ex-Marine and his family of misfits, they learn a disturbing truth about San Judas and the broken world that remains.

Book one had me interested, but this book not the dust.
Have mercy was this just bad. The plot was shit. The characters were all shit. Murdered.
The badass chick from book one died metaphorically in book one … what remained of her here was a frail, weak, melodramatic, pansies ass, crying, Pollyanna, stick in the mud.
The world has collapsed, and the FMC is worried about the most trivial shit and has zero survival instincts?
The sporadic here a survivor there a survivor just randomly thriving only as strategic plot placements was beyond unbelievable.
The BFF reunion was so forced it was laughable.
Oh, my BFF is alive so I’ll finally have sex because she says it’s okay~
Oh, look, the male MC jumps in front of the FMC for the 3,000 time to protect her as she pouts about more trivial shit. This is one of the few books where I wanted him to find some other chick and leave her ass in the dust to cry.
I can’t believe Lark’s behavior towards Soren for most of the book, idiotic internal conflicts she had and absolutely retarded situation with Potia and Bernie. Really? More loyal to an idiot girl then to the man that is your future? Gilt towards Potia while the entire badness WAS of her own doing? These are just contrived conflicts and dilemmas of no value other then to advance the book.
The second part of the Lawless trilogy. In the last book we end up with many questions about what is going on, and in this book most of them are resolved, but we get new questions. The pace of the book is good, and we get to know more about the character's motivations and personalities, and also more about the new world they are living in. I like how the future they paint is a future you can imagine really happening, the author follows the possible consequences of the climate change and takes the worst case scenario, giving us a dark future. The characters get outside, but their problems are not over.
This book was lame. Lark was beyond annoying she is supposed to be some badass but she was always panicking and freaking out. In fact none of the characters were likable in this book. The only ones who were actual badasses were the side characters who helped them. They made dumb decisions and were always getting themselves into trouble.
Yep I got preached 2 ......and gonna say ,no you main man was not sexy to me sorry .I didn't feel the chemistry between these two at all add to that with the climate theme and the writers not so subtle end authors note I can't go on with out getting aggravated .Regardless where you stand in this subject , STOP preaching . We had some causal abortion issue in here as well aiming at people that believe its wrong ...again just write a story stop trying to enlighten all the masses . the end note done me in. Sorry I leave the real world outside my books...was looking for a good end of world book and ended up with a headache..so I'm done with the series and author that wants to use her books to reach the masses and feels compelled to let me know what really going on in world. I read to get away from that so ,yep writer not for me .🤷🙋
Following their escape, Lark, Soren and co. are reeling from what they face in the 'outside' world. This was not the country that they had left behind when they were thrown into jail, and the slow realization that things are seriously messed up is so realistic and enthralling that you feel right there with the gang.
The plot further unravels itself and allows you to further understand the characters and what they face. With another two surprise escapees on the run, there is plenty of action and mystery that keeps you turning those pages and buying up book 3.
Ms Benners second book in this series continues to entertain. All of the characters from the first book return, even though we are led to believe (by the first book) this wouldn't happen The explanation for how this happens is logical and doesn't require a belief in either Zombies or Vampires.
I'm moving on to book three, but because I unexpectedly got a new job (I'm going from retired to semi retired), It will no doubt take me longer than a day to read book 3.
It always cracks me up when people who think they are smart can buy into such b.s. The books you sighted have already been proven wrong by higher educated scientists. There have always been extreme climate changes . We just did not have the equipment to evaluate in the years before data started being collected. Check with Texans and we can tell you how we keep your timber from getting pine bark beetles. Can’t believe you are trying to blame that on climate control. WoW!
I like strong female characters so Lark is a favourite of mine in this series and Bernie is the perfect sidekick. Portia is the girl we all love to hate and an interesting twist with her being pregnant and the fallout from the decision to keep the baby. Great world building and I look forward to reading what happens next
I like the plot but the fight scenes are too long and descriptive which after a few gets tedious. Also I felt Lark was a really strong woman character in book one who looked out for herself. but in this book she seems weak and helpless relying on the men too much
This story is truly amazing as it relates a possible future scenario. The characters are well developed and sometimes surprising. I think Ms Benner has hit a chord that we should pay attention to regarding global climate change. Can't wait for book 3.
I love a good book series ! And so far Tarah hasn't disappointed. I actually enjoy every character in this book which is rare. I think we get a good idea of each of their stories. I can't wait for the rest of this story to play out!!
this is the second book in this series and it was fantastic ... this story continues to grow and develop without losing my interest or being repetitive. i love the characters and their growth throughout the book has me super excited to pick up book number 3
I enjoy everything written by this author and this was no exception. She has obviously done her research although I think she might have blinders on when it comes to her message. Excellent book though.
It's a good dystopia novel. Kept me interested. I'll definitely finish the series. The author has obvious social awareness intentions through the books and the afterwards, but to each their own. She's a good writer.
Unique ideas for a story but not so far fetched that they are unbelievable. Finished the second book quickly and started the third immediately. Can't wait to see what happens!
Disappointing after the first one. Actually had trouble getting through to the end. I may try one more and see if it's better. Almost like the book was written really fast to get it out with not much time given to making it a great book.
The lawless universe scares the crap out of me ! I love Lark and the gang but holy cow, famine is definitely a scary apoc scenario, and I can't get enough !!
This series is amazing! It starts with a shocker and ends on a cliffhanger! The prisoners have dealt with so much it’s Just go go go! Love it! Can’t wait to read what’s next in store
I enjoyed this book thoroughly. It kept me engaged and was interesting right up to the last page.I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Environmentally, so similar to what we are experiencing now it's like a window into our very near future. But let's hope prison facilities that experiment on inmates and are owned by ag research companies stay fictional.
An excellent second in the series! Ms. Brenner never disappoints, and this book is no exception! Lark, Soren, Axel, and Simjay are OUT, but to what kind of world, what kind of people? They need to adapt rapidly to what has become of their world. They need answers. They need each other. The characters have depth, and the story line is exciting, action packed, and complex. Can't wait for the next!
