I'm not usually into surprises, but I might make one, gorgeous golden exception...
Before I even had the chance to move into my office as the new, if unwilling, commander of Persephone Station, the entire complex is destroyed in a freak accident.
Or an attack.
No one knows, or is admitting anything.
Our rescuers are a group of pirates. Or smugglers. They're not exactly answering questions, either.
More importantly, they're giant, golden skinned aliens...
And their rogue of a captain seems very interested in the little human commander.
Me.
Rogue Mate is the first in the Rogue Star science fiction alien romance series. Come along for the ride!
Not worth any time. This is the most boring alien story I have ever read.
The writing is not good.
I couldn’t connect to any character. I didn’t feel any emotion through the pages. Even during the rare action scenes, I felt nothing. No suspense, no real romance, nothing creative when it comes to the alien species. I couldn’t imagine one single thing due to the lack of real descriptions.
If you are looking for a hot alien romance, look elsewhere The book is good; I like the storyline and the overall plot. The MC acted more like good friends than lovers, and their relationship felt somewhat forced, like, an afterthought, there was not enough passion for me.
I like how the characters slowly make friends and fall in love. No Insta romance.there There is also an exciting chase and rescue scene thrown in. The ending does kind of end with a cliffhanger. It definitely makes you want to read the next book to find out what The Dominion is up to.
Written in first person by Elin Wyn & Ava York, Rogue Mate is the 1st book in the Rogue Star series, and switches perspectives between the Shein male Dejar and the human female Kalyn.
Kalyn Askvig was a Space Force Commander of the Persephone Station on Pluto. She aspired to be an anthropologist, but her mother detested the idea. Adastria Askvig, was a powerful woman on Mars who sent her daughter Kalyn to command the outpost filled with criminals that despised her. She had just arrived on Persephone Station, filled with 30 women, when it was hit with a shockwave that destroyed the station and put their lives in danger. Had Dejar not been there, and decided to rescue them, they would've died.
Dejar Lemec was captain of the Rogue Star. He was of the Shein race, which were large humanoids with golden skin, sharp teeth and glowing tattoos. He and his crew had taken a job collecting ice from the Terran system, but when they emerged, they chose to risk being caught by the Dominion in order to save the human's lives. The Dominion is the governing body of civilized space who set restrictions on travel to certain parts of the cosmos and Dejar violated that by flying into the Terran system. If they were to return the humans to Earth and get discovered by the Dominion, they would all be destroyed. So Dejar added the 30 women to his crew and gave them each a room and jobs aboard the Rogue Star.
After a job ended in the deaths of some crew members; 3 humans and 6 Shein, Kalyn decided she needed to protect her crew and had Dejar drop them off at a Dominion outpost. Huge mistake. Kalyn discovered that the Dominion had plans to use the women for some experiment instead of sending them home as promised. Thankfully, the Shein crew decided that they missed the women and went back for them. The decision turned them into outlaws, but they rescued the women and began their new lives on the Rogue’s Sacrifice with a survival plan.
First intercourse took place around the 80% mark. The author(s) dangled the cheese for so long that it molded, and started to smell. I know that the first book in a series typically has to set the scene, so I will give it the benefit of the doubt, but if the next book makes us wait just as long for a half-baked romantic interaction, I will ditch this series. Hell, it took forever just for the couple to have their first kiss. This book explains that: "The birthrate for human males had dropped so low after the last global war that it was rare a woman encountered a man outside of a reproduction agreement. Courting was never something human females were prepared for. It was something only found in history books." So that means that EVERY human female was a virgin until they decided to procreate, and even then, romance was non-existent. The few men alive fucked multiple women for the sole purpose of making babies and relationships were not a thing. I'm sure those men were in heaven; getting to have sex all the time with no obligation or commitment. Women on the other hand? Let's just say that I'm sure this version of our future had more lesbians than this book hinted to. Let's face it, we've been giving ourselves orgasms for centuries and we don't need a man to accomplish that. Anyway, I digress. The Shein have a secondary appendage just above their thick cock that supposedly stimulates the clitoris. Their monster cocks are lined with ridges, making it every woman's dream dildo. Oh, and they vibrate. It's a shame that the only sexual encounter we readers got to witness was poorly written. The buildup to the couple coming together was a huge letdown.
To give you an understanding of just how poorly this book was written, the following is a passage from Kalyn's perspective at the 77% mark: (“A lot of messed up shit, but that’s not the point,” I stressed. “My point is I want to be with someone because I love them, not because of duty.” “You love me?” Dejar’s eyes narrowed. Realizing what I’d just said, I felt the color drain from my face. My mouth ran dry. I couldn’t turn back now.) Kalyn Never declared that she loved him in her statement. She specified that she wanted to be with someone "because she loved them" and not because of duty. But somehow, he took that to mean her declaration of love and she, in turn, admitted it as such. That was a giant leap on both their parts. Then they both decided they loved each other and jumped into bed. I get it, writing is hard. But what the crap is this?
This book was longer than necessary, and the adventure to romance ratio was heavily unbalanced. The adventure was a boring snooze fest that could have easily been summarized with less wording. There was a lot of unnecessary dialogue. What romance scenes we did get were the opposite of fire. It was cold and dry, almost like a virgin wrote the book. Overall, I was extremely disappointed, and so far, I don't recommend the read, especially since I know what Ava York is capable of. I will give the second book of the series a chance for redemption. But if it's just more of the same, I will return the remainder of the series unread and move on.

Well there is nothing like being saved in space, especially when you didn't know aliens existed. Kaitlyn was the new commander on Pluto the day she arrived a shock wave destroyed the base and suddenly she along with her fellow team mates find themselves saved by a group of aliens who lived both inside and outside the law. Considering Terrans were meant to be unaware of other planets having civilisations, the team had to hide and stay under the radar of the Dominion Republic who has the major control within the Galaxies. the captain of their new home and spaceship, had never seen a human before and finds himself completely taken in with Kaitlyn and as much as Kaitlyn has little to know understanding about men and relationships, she finds herself totally drawn to the captain but refuses to allow herself any enjoyment until the rest of the woman are able to make their way back to earth. An entertaining adventure with characters who have plenty of attitude and enjoy battling with each other along with finding themselves at the centre of different types of action packed situations and high end drama and suspence. Finally the whole crew finds the two different teams have developed into a family unit and know how to work and live together, but they have a fight on their hands if they want to live in peace. Grab a copy today and enjoy this sci-fi adventure.
This author is simply amazing and when I realised that this was the beginning of a brand new series I was incredibly excited. I am a massive fan and simply become addicted to the series that she creates and if this book is anything to go by this series will be no different. The characters are diverse and just larger than life. The supporting characters are pretty awesome and add so much to the story and it seem's that Aavat's story is coming next and I cannot wait to see this snarky man brought to his knees by a human.
I couldn't help but feel sorry for Kayln, her mother sounds like an absolute nightmare, she was forced into a career that she really didn't want and then shipped off to a station at the very edge of the Terran system. When, on her first day, catastrophe strikes the station Kayln finds herself aboard a ship with beings that she never suspected existed with women who have zero respect for her because of her last name. Dejar is the captain of the ship that rescued them and to be honest I developed a major crush on this alien who has no trouble bending the rules but is a man of honour and integrity (as strange as that sounds for a part-time criminal). Their journey is one of excitement, danger and intrigue. What is the truth behind the Dominion? I look forward to finding out.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Kalyn was sent by her mom to Pluto, she is to command the inmates on the planet, keeping the base up and running. It's not even a day into her command and the base is destroyed and the women are on a spaceship headed for deep space. After getting to know everyone on the ship, Kalyn offers to help with the cargo. Most of the women she is with have criminal backgrounds and are anxious to help get them out of a tight situation. Kalyn and Captain Dejar become good friends. Kalyn can't help but think if they could get to a Dominion space station that maybe they could all get returned home. Dejar warns her this is a bad idea, but like so many women in books and real life, she doesn't listen. There's a huge fight on the planet and they narrowly escape with their lives intact. Things heat up between Kalyn and Dejar, they do the horizontal mambo. The space ship is blacklisted and they can't get a job unless they can fake out the Dominion.
Dejar is a cool alien. He is willing to listen to the little female and warm her bed. Kalyn is a worthy foe. Her mom must be a ball buster because the mom sent Kalyn to Pluto. There is chemistry between Dejar and Kalyn all through the book. It was just slow for me, even the subplot just didn't spice it up. I kept waiting for it to pick up.
I received an ARC edition of this book from the author.
Parts of this story are clearly meant to setup the series, but manages to do so without dragging the story. When Dejar's ship, The Rogue Star, makes a jump near Terran space they ended up somewhere they didn't expect. Kalyn is the new commander for the Persephone station on Pluto, a research station comprised mostly of minor criminals, until the station is destroyed. Dejar and his crew rescue the members of the Persephone station, but now are caught hiding their new human crew members from the Dominion authorities.
There was a lot of twists an turns in this story that keep the story moving. I like the introduction of the crew of the Rogue Star and Persephone station. We get enough to get a feel for the diverse crews without being overwhelmed by the number of characters. The romance elements are certainly slow-burn in this story, but that works well since Kalyn and Dejar are from vastly different societies and Kalyn hasn't had an opportunity to date before.
It will be interesting to see what secrets the next book reveals and how the crews continue to merge together.
Another thrilling adventure by Elin Wyn. I am a big fan of this author and everything I have read by her is outstanding and from what I’ve read here, this is going to be another exciting, terrifying, action-packed suspense filled series. A space outpost in the outer reaches staffed with Earth’s “undesirables”. A merchant vessel in the right place at the wrong time and a shockwave that destroys the entire complex. Dejar and Kalyn are trying to make the best of a bad situation that makes no sense. I love Kalyn’s attitude and how she is fighting not only the women on her station, but herself to prove she deserves the commander’s job she just arrived to fulfill. She has some pretty rough times in the beginning trying to prove her worth, but a little coaching from Dejar sets her on the right track. This is non-stop action with plenty of intrigue that the crew of the Rogue Star will try to solve. I love this beginning and look forward to the rest of this series. I requested an advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.
This seems the beginning of quite a journey. This is a slow burn romance story with danger at every turn. At times.is seemed a little bit slow to me but it was still a great book and I will be reading the next book. Kalyn just arrived on a small station on Pluto(a frozen instafreeze wasteland). She is supposed to be the Commander. The other women posted there are either criminals, unwanted or there to do experiments. She wasn't even there a full day when a wave of energy started tearing the station apart. Dejar is the captain of the Rogue Star. They do deliveries to earn money. They were going to collect water and ice to deliver to another planet but ended up at the wrong coordinates and ended up saving a large group of human women. Humans are illegal in their system of planets. The Dominion is the law. So they try to avoid them. But strange things begin to happen and people are harmed. Together the must figure out what is happening and how to keep the whole crew safe.
I liked the characters and the story line but it was really boring the romance was not there if you ask me they were more friends then anything that eventually became friends with benefits. The intimate scenes consisted of one encounter of for play and in the next chapter they finally went all the way home and that was it...I really can't stand one of those kinds of books where you have to read the entire book just to get any intimacy I understand you have to build up the characters relationship but dang this book had none of that intense heat between the characters they may have shared two or three kisses before they finally made it to the for play scene. So if someone were to ask me if I'd recommend this book I would have to say nope.
I was so excited when i found out that Elin Wyn is writing a new collection of books for us. I was mot disappointed when i read this book. The excitement starts from the first few pages into the book. The syory is filled with nail biting suspense, explosive action and adventure and new characters that will entertain us and have us looking fwd to the next instalments of Rogue Star books.
Dejar is the captain of the Rogue Star a cargo ship that takes on both legal and sometimes not so legal work offers. On one of tjeir trips he and his crew may have caused the destruction of Pluto and now find them selves with 30 human women aboard. And this is where all the adventure begins as it seems that there are unseen forces after the human women and its up to Dejar and his crew to keep them safe.... I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
Kalyn and Dejar are our first couple from the Rogue star series. Kalyn young thrust into a leadership position without a great deal of training and on her first day her world explodes. Now she has to taken care of a group of women far from home and make sure they survive. Dejar is captain of a cargo ship that sometime does less than legal jobs to make ends meet. It was precisely on one of these less than legal jobs where he comes across a human outpost in which disaster strikes. He save all the women and now the adventure truly begins to unfold. Danger, hunts this new crew where ever they go. The human women realize they can't go home and a bigger darker mystery is about to unfold. I enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward to reading the other in the series.
I like this sci-fi epic story with aliens and human females working together to survive. The captains of the Rogue Star took a chance to come to the Terran system to harvest ice from the asteroids but accidentally destroyed a station.
Dejar is one of the captains who save the females at the station. Kalyn is the commander of the station. She works with Dejar find tasks aboard Rogue Star to pay their way. Will they ever return home?
The characters are unique, feisty, and relatable. The plot is a fast-paced drama with many twists and turns that keep the reader on the edge of their seat. I finished this book in one day because I was so excited entertained and excited about the plot and the characters. I would like to read the other stories that are written by the authors.
This book had potential. The characters were interesting the plot sounded like a good idea. It's was just very poorly executed. I feel like most of the story took place outside of the book. I found myself skipping back because the characters would be discussing a topic that only one person knew about in the previous chapter. Time would jump ahead and everyone would be up to date. Which made the book feel rushed. But at the same time it focuses on the most mundane tasks for pages which made the book feel like it was going on forever.
I will read the next book in the series bc I want to know what happens but If it's not better I will abandon the series.
What could possible go wrong on your first day? How about everything you could think of and then turn that up to 11? I didn't get to bed till the wee hours because I could put it down! You have massive golden males with stunning tattoos and attitude a mile wide - of course I wasn't gonna put it down! I love the characters and the situations they find themselves in so we get to see how they react and totally lose their manure! I love the fact that although we have two main characters we get to see loads more and see how they mesh with each other or in the case of Maris......fight with everyone! (Ooh I love Maris!) Get comfy cos this is gonna be a bumpy ride! - but worth the admission fee
This was a interesting book, there was so much going on. A lot of under currents, secret plots and unknown enemies. Throw in a bunch of women from a prison planet and a spaceship full of alien males and you get chaos, romance and a stupid desire for Kalyn to prove herself and protect her “girls”. I’m horrible with names but I think the alien Captain was just what uptight Kalyn needed. The romance didn’t play as much of a part as you would think because the writer was setting the stage for the rest of series. (In my opinion). I will read the next book because the teaser makes it sound like it’s going to be funny.
The start of an amazing, new series I can already tell. I loved Kalyn and Dejar's story. It's excitement and danger straight off the beginning with such an awesome storyline. Dejar might be a leader but he's also such a sweetie when it comes to Kalyn. Kalyn is a very determined and likeable character who finds herself falling for the sexy alien who saved her. This book is a great sci-fi romance with adventure, humor, suspense and a HEA. I'm looking forward to more books in this series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
A compelling start to a new series! Any story that starts with an explosion is worth paying attention to. Because it is the first in a series, there is considerable story and world building. The characters are introduced and make you look forward to a story that might focus on them. Kaylin and Dejar have a slow build up but the whole book is full of action and story twists. I think more time could have been spent on Earth's man dearth, but maybe that will come later. I love the hints, the foreshadowing, that places the Dominion in a dark light.
This story is set far in the future, where we have colonies on some planets in our solar system yet we have not yet met other lifeforms. Kalyn has just gotten command of the Pluto space base when it seems to come under attack. Dejar is the captain of a ship that happens upon the Pluto base as it is destroyed. After his crew rescues the women of the base they become fugitives of the law. This is the start of the series and expect to have unanswered questions at the end but it is not a cliffhanger.
It was a fun read, some of it a bit slow. Kalyn & Dejar's romance was a slow burn, mostly due to all that was going on. Her knee-jerk over reaction to tragedy and her desperate hope for a solution seemed to me like a head -in-sand move that proved to be a turning point for everyone's future. We won't know what the future holds for them...yet.
Will probably read the next book when it comes out later this week. Aavat (Dejar's First Mate) & Senna's story
I enjoyed this book. I think a lot of thought was put into it and the plot was interesting. I love the way that she made the characters come alive. I liked the way she made the two main characters come together, it made them more believable that they didn't hop into bed after their first meeting. I felt like they got to know each other first before any action took place, but believe me it was worth the wait. I look forward to reading more of her books.
This was okay...not a sexy steamy romantic book (sigh they can't all be Ruby Dixon's Blue Barbarians) Character development was lacking, as was some of story. I finished it. There wasn't really a cliffhanger(someone had said there was) Other than future dangers and who knows what. They said I love you and got on with life. And so will I looking forward to more Ruby Dixon's work. (Hell yeah I'm a Fan. She rocks the alien fantasy genre.
Kalyn has always been a disappointment to her parents, but then she has her complaints about them too. When she’s sent to Persephone, on Mars, she’s only there a day before disaster strikes and she and the women there almost die. They are rescued by a spaceship who may have inadvertently caused the problem. And that’s when strange things, unexplainable things, begin to happen, not just to the ladies, but also the men who saved them.
Kalyn had no idea the first day on a new job could be so bad...
Kalyn was not expecting to live her new job, or even really like it, but she honestly has no way of knowing just how bad the first day on a new job could be.
This done in one quick read tossed out some threads I hope future books pick up on, but reached a solid conclusion, does a lot of interesting World Building, and introduces a host of interesting characters, including the entertaining Captain Dejar.
This is the beginning of a relationship between a group of humans and rogue aliens. It sets the stage for a long line of adventures. You start with this one and keep reading until you have finished the entire series. putting down each segment is difficult. By the end, the whole group is close family. Everyone is a misfit in need of love. They trek across the universe trying to right wrong and in the end save their home worlds.
Fine concept and plot, but so boring. Perhaps the first person narrative is not appropriate for relating to the characters or just not enough insight from either perspective. What was Kalyn doing before she got on the Persephone? What sort of culture do the Shein have? What does each planet/outpost/station look like? Feel like? Smell like?
I really enjoyed Elin Wyn's Star Breed series but I have yet to find another of her series that grabs my attention in the same way.
It was boring. These people are the worst smugglers in the universe, and the relationship between MCs felt more like friendship than love. They don’t even kiss for most of the book, and when they have sex it’s super awkward. None of the questions raised during the story are answered at all, so this does not have a HEA, but a HFN. The world was very uninteresting so I won’t continue with this series.
Exploding station, rescued by aliens, captured by other aliens for experimentation...
This book has a lot of elements that I look for in sci-fi romance. The hero is just trying to do the decent thing even if he takes on illegal jobs. The heroine fights thru her fear to become strong.
