Okay, no fucking joke, this series is the FUCKING BEST. I shit you not, I BLEW through this volume with reckless abandon and I regret nothing.
One of the things that I love about this series is how it handles exposition. First off, the exposition never feels forced or unnatural, occurring during scenes when it logically would. Second, even when exposition occurs in the middle of a fight (like in this volume) it never disrupts the momentum of said fight and goes right back into the action when it's done. Third, each exposition scenes is handled concisely and quickly. I never feel like a character is reading from a textbook or using repetitive/ redundant language because characters say what needs to be said to understand the context of what's going on and that's it. And I will forever FUCKING PRAISE Satake for writing concise exposition scenes because apparently that is a serious issue some mangaka (and honestly novelists) struggle with.
But more than that, the pacing in this series is perfect. It's not so rushed that it feels like crucial details or plot points are skimmed, but doesn't drag on for the sake of mystery or drama. And of course, the artwork and characters continue to be the absolute best. Guideau and Ashaf are still an amazing duo and I'm so glad Helga has joined them. She's a super interesting character and I was hoping she wouldn't disappear after this arc, but thankfully she's joining the crew. The art is absolutely stunning and suits the world, story, and tone and I will never shut up about it, so get used to it.
Okay, I need to wrap this up or else this is gonna turn into a fucking dissertation. In short, this series is still amazing, I am still having the time of my life reading it, and I still highly recommend it to all fantasy fans. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk, have a nice day.
Outline of the story: In a modern Europe-looks-alike fantasy world, there are magic-users and the unearthly powerful beings known as the 'witches'. The witches are seemingly all evil and love to curse people and cause mayhem, so the witches are widely feared and hated by the general public and are hunted by the Church and an unknown organization of magic users.
The witch hunting Holy Knights v.s. the Cult of magicians and magic-users and the weakest witch with the most fearsome cursed/magical sword! All the excitement!
The artwork is as lovely as always (everything, I mean everything looks great damn it, especially the cursed sword in its final/full form), the plots are well constructed although it barely breaks any new ground. Although I'm still a bit confused what the Cult is trying to do here, they are capturing/chasing after witches to protect them, or wanting to use the witches for their own ends, or the mixture of both? Plus what about ?Curiouser and curiouser!
I like how even the main antagonists, the Holy Knights also have good design and awesome power going for them! ^_^
This volume brings the darkness close to Happiness levels and the action is nearly non-stop. This series does so many things right (art, story, design, text-to-panel-to-story ratio, etc), but the one thing it does wrong, it does so wrong. In the middle of this badass, kick ass fight comes the kiss thing again, fresh out of a shojo manga. It is SO out of place, it shoved me out of the story. What. The. Hell. It's annoying, doesn't match the tone, and totally diminishes everything that character has been through and fought for, and makes a mockery of the story. Let's see...
Gory torture to protect the world. 乁( •_• )ㄏ Whining about first kiss in middle of battle to protect the world. Yeah, those totally mesh.
(-_- )ノ⌒┫ ┻ ┣ ┳
Great cliff hanger ending, though.
I would love to see an anime adaptation to get the full effect of the action and character designs. Black and white doesn't do it justice, but the artistry brings out a lot of detail and movement.
Picking up where Vol 3 ended, this continues the fight over the demon sword and the Executioners. But just when things seem to settle down, a new player emerges. Well... several players emerge. Like Vol 1 and 3, this one continues with the great art style and draws out the character's characters more. The action is impactful and we see Guideau in a new light. As an aside, I found that Ashaf (the mage) and Ashgan (demon sword) have oddly similar names; why? There wasn't a great link between the two (or maybe there will be?), and it was hard to keep them separate. Anyway, I am looking forward to the new installment with keen interest.
Guideau tries to rescue Helga from being captured by the Executioner and to stop him from getting the Demon Sword-- However, just as they are about to escape, Helga's leg is grabbed and they end up failing.
Although she barely regains the "magic sword" and attempts to counterattack, Asyaf's movements are blocked by spirit magic, the battalion commander of the "Holy Knights," is betrayed by his subordinates and is injured all over his body.
Will it be possible to stop the rampage of the “Executioner” who is trying to release the power of the “Magic Sword”?!
I was not expecting to apply to us that came at the end of this volume. But I’m pretty happy that it came. I have so many questions and thoughts about where the series is going and really hope that you next six volumes are just as fast paced and interesting as the previous ones.sometimes I find myself in a funk and I stop reading a series to move onto something else but I always come back and when I come back, I always finish these books specifically in the series. The artist is beautiful. The story is interesting, and the ideas are fun.
Ahhhhhhhhhh that last chapter!!!!!!! We finally get to see the inner sanctums of the magic group only to be interrupted... and the big reveal at the end damn ! Also seeing Ashaf shaking up was kinda hot, he’s so calm all the time.
I had to drop a star bc I found it difficult to follow the big battle scene... but I love this series and wish I could subscribe to it... I wonder if it’ll be a limited run and that’s why subbing isn’t an option??
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
That was fucking intense. Only gripe is with the art style it's kinda hard to see the battle scenes sometimes. Satake has a habit of drawing fully detailed motion in small panels. But overall, if this volume doesn't convince you that this manga deserves to be followed I don't know what will.
Everything about this series is compelling. The worldbuilding is very slick and charming, the characters are badass but not infallible. The big mystery at the back—wtf is going on with Guideau—remains, hooking me so much that I won’t stop the volumes this until I figure it out.
Snapshot review: i honestly cannot give enough props to satake for his world building. even the exposition is beautifully done, not too much, just enough to explain what's needed and not bogging down the reader. i'm having such a fun time with this series!
Still at a three star for now but at least a more solid three star. This volume hooked me a little faster and though I’m not a fan of battles (I always find it hard to get the full picture ) I could not let the volume go I had to know what was happening near the end.
Please release volume 11 Satake sensei!! Every month I check to see if the latest volume has been released yet. I also love all the clothing designs that Guideau wears.
That ending… holy shit that ending!!!!! I wasn’t expecting that at all. Also the paladin just needs to join the team because they were awesome together damn it.
