This unusually wide-ranging anthology, containing more than 270 poems by over 70 poets, attempts to show English poetry has developed from Beowulf to the present day. The editors have devoted special attention to the twentieth century and to certain individual poets whose work may be studied in more detail.
The collection is designed to be used in a variety of ways. In particular, the integrated list of authors, titles and first lines makes it possible to use the book for a thematic no less than a chronological and biographical approach.
