Are thousands of orbs, with each containing a reality housing billions of souls, about to burn out and die? Can Trew find his daughter, or will everything he has sacrificed be for nothing? And what impact will a young scientist who believes that his reality exists inside of a computer simulation make on his world?
It is nice to see the series moving forward and hopefully the story being drawn together. I do not love this series anymore though, it is more I am interested in seeing how it ends because I really loved the first few books. The universe is getting quite large and it is hard to remember who is who anymore without rereading everything.
Too many threads to keep things straight anymore. Unfortunately the characters also don’t have enough consistency to make a deep imprint as well. The series started great but given the entanglement of the latest book and the fact that the next one is still not done, I’m afraid this will be my last book I read of this series.
I kept with this series for some unknown reason, and this was the last volume in the 9 book "omnibus" edition on Amazon, it is in no way the end and I hate myself for not giving up on this nonsense series after the 4th book went off the rails
It surely was an enjoyable read. No doubts on that. It's the bigger picture that is problematic in a manner of speaking, thus taking it from an easy 5 stars to the 4-star rating it is getting. It was good, first off, that this installment wasn't some sort of "side novel" like a couple of the 9 had been.... books which didn't really add to the main story in any significant way if at all. This one is on track. BUT THEN IT ISN'T. What I mean to say is that it is getting to be too complex.... erratic... complicated.... I suppose that is enough to make part of the point. See, it is difficult enough to hold a story together when things get complex and you're also dealing with subject material which is still science fiction. I'll relate this to the Matrix movies. Similar concepts in some fashion. And at the end of the first movie you're just like "Wow!". And there's some believability in such potentiality. But then it just gets out of hand in the 2nd and 3rd installments. UNbelievable!! And then thinking of the Men In Black movies. Well, at least the first one. THIS actually relates to this book well in a manner of speaking. Basically the part where first Agent J (Will Smith) talks smack about Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) "putting those rats in that locker" (paraphrased I'll wager) with regards to the beings who are little video porn rental fiends I'll call them and revolve around the watch (?the timekeeper?). Anyway, Agent K decides to teach Agent J a lesson of sorts with regards to the whole locker setup and shows him how THEY are actually in a locker of their own which they can access the door to in the locker room. Thing with this movie, though, is that they do not attempt to make sense of how you can be in that locker and the potential realities and how everything perhaps ties in on itself or whatever. They just make a point and let it rest. Terry in THIS BOOK is TRYING to make some "Science Fiction Sense" of the entire thing; and frankly, just confuses the hell out of the whole thing more than anything. I suspect it has become FAR TOO COMPLEX a ""universe"" to remotely make any attempt at an explanation for. Basically, it is getting way out of hand!! And we/he have ZERO REAL concept how to even begin to make the faintest sense out of it all. Regardless, still an enjoyable book. I must repeat that. And an enjoyable series. Back to why 4 stars and not 5.... it really doesn't take us "anywhere" with regards to the story overall. Not really. Sure. It introduces "Melody".... the "music behind all the math" and a sort of language all of its own. Almost a programming language it would appear. I surely hope that actually matters significantly in book 10. Frankly, this book didn't really extend the storyline ANY further than it had been when it comes right down to it. So still in a limbo state of sorts. And that's the really hard thing. These books take SOOOOOO darned long to be released. And this one wasn't quite 9 hours (Audible). Obviously Terry is taking his good ol' time writing and releasing these. TOO MUCH TIME!!! It is nearly a year between books!!! That just isn't fair to the reader. To the fans. I can hardly imagine if I had picked up on this back in 2012 with the first book and be here 8 years later without even a hint of a 10th book. As it was I came into this series after book 6 I believe, then just waiting the requisite year for each next installment. I understand if Terry needs work since his novels don't appear to be doing quite enough business to be able to make him a full-time author. Hey.... gotta make a living. BUT when your books are averaging like just 8 hours each or whatever, well, it's either a "dick move" to make us wait so long OR there is a problem which is slowing these successive book's releases down to the point they are at. I surely hope Terry doesn't have any serious issues holding him back from his writing. Well, aside from the all-too-common and so often necessary "work ("regular job") thang". A bunch of authors I read are right on that precipice of being able to quit their "day job" and become full-time authors. BUT IT IS an unpredictable and "dangerous" proposition.... giving up that security (often gotten after numerous years of work at the same business or job-type). Well, I suppose I can't complain. Well, I can. I can stop reading these books. And, well, they are still enjoyable. I still want to find out what happens in the end (if there is one). So I must just wait. Patience.
This may come across as melodramatic, but it is what it is. I was hoping all my flailing around trying to keep my head above water so I won't lose my way from the shore would pay off somehow, but alas, it was not to be. I'm now floating out in the middle of this vast ocean of mindboggling confusion with busted legs, broken hands, shriveled body, and a rapidly diminished will to survive.
Terry Schott's got an amazing story here (buried in the rubble), but sadly, I can't keep a grip on it anymore and I barely even had grip to begin with. The asinine number of simultaneous subplots, many of which are either never wrapped up or flat-out FORGOTTEN about (on my part), has gone and slaughtered most of my interest in the outcome of this story. I simply can't keep up.
There's just too much going on all the time, a constant go, go, go with way too many characters to keep track of. I've gone and forgotten who's significant, why they're significant, and why I’m supposed to care. Names are vaguely familiar, no longer solidified, reduced to filler. The multiple moments of "revelations" no longer pack the punch that they used to, simply because I just can't. Freaking. REMEMBER. I don’t know what anything MEANS anymore.
If I had known that I'd need to take some damn notes just to keep literally ALL elements in this series straight I may not have even bothered. But I did bother, didn't I? I wanted so badly to know how such a complex web could work itself out. And while I'm still compelled to finally reach that answer, I'm now of the mindset of "let's just get this over with" instead of "Omg I must KNOW!"
This entry in particular does a rather horrible job continuing the main storyline, especially considering that it isn't even a prequel. Just more simultaneous events that I have zero understanding WHY it even matters. Once I found myself sighing, groaning, and finally skimming my way through, I knew it was over for me. The magic has faded.
I've got one entry to go in this series and yes, I do intend to finish it (even if it's by skimming). Whether or not it's truly the last book or if Schott's cooking up another, I can't say. What I will say, though, is that while I'm partially still hoping for a great payoff given the mental mayhem this series has subjected me to, I no longer expect it. And that's the most tragic development for me.
Wish me luck as I somehow trudge through the next entry with a drooped head and dragging feet. At the very least, all that's enjoyable to me now is dialogue (and even THAT'S pushing it, since the dialogue is overdone). For my piddly amount of commentary on a story that has effectively died for me, click here.
Yes!!! I’ve been waiting for a book like this. I got a bit lost in the realities of the last three Game books but this one finally tied a lot of pieces together. There are still a million questions to be answered but I absolutely love this series and can’t wait to read the next one. Also, I have a feeling that not all of my questions will ever be answered since the author loves to create characters like the old man who are cryptic and don’t answer questions that are considered bad questions. Still, this universe is absolutely intriguing and I look forward to more books to come.
I read "The Game" in 2015. It was amazing. Over the next months, I eagerly purchased each new book in the series, up through "Cyber" in 2017. After detours into Terry's other series, I picked up the series again in 2024. Over the intervening years, I'd lost the threads (there are many) of the story. I have tons of books on my "to read" list and didn't want to go back and reread the entire series, so I decided to read "Fragmented" and then "Resonance" as if I hadn't encountered the story before. It was a real struggle. There are so many characters and timelines in the stories that I struggled to keep track of them all and frequently found myself completely at a loss.
I have the omnibus edition of this series and book nine continues the complexities of this fascinating story.
Each character fills an important role, each world related to the other - past, present, future, another dimension, another reality, up and down and inside out…where will it end?
I loved it all and am looking forward to book ten and hope it's not too long to wait.
Book 9 in the Game is Life series is a good addition that moves the story forward enough for long-time fans while letting us stay in touch with some of the characters we've grown to love (or hate, as the case may be). I would definitely suggest you read this book if you're a fan of the series.
As much as I enjoy this series I am finding it harder and harder to keep things straight. The consistent introduction of new characters and then putting characters that we either love or hate on the back burner is getting weary. I believe it is time to wrap this up.
While I enjoyed each book, and had a hunch where the series was going, it was very confusing. After reading a few of them and feeling confused, I thought that I needed to take notes on who all of the characters were in order to better understand what was going on. Not something that I want to do when reading for enjoyment. That being said, I think that the series is very apropos for our times .
I feel like I’m writing the same review for each of these books.
I still don’t quite know what’s going on but I'm still absolutely loving it. And then I think I’m getting it, but then realise I don’t. It’s exhausting! In a good way.
And to top it all off, I’ve just realised number 10 has just been released!
2020 audiobook: This was good and it was exciting to see some of the separate worlds start to weave together, but it is getting kind of hard to keep everything straight. I hate to say it, but I think this series should start wrapping up soon. There might be one or two too many layers on this onion.
Glad it isn't over but damn I hate waiting for the next book!!! The different realities are becoming confusing yet I can't stop reading!! By far the best series I've EVER read!!!
I have read every book up this point of this series I tell you Terry has out did him self with theses books I would tell any who like to read ScFi should give them a read awesome reads.
While the beginning stories were interesting the stories within stories within stories kept dragging out and the book(s) became shallow as did the characters.
And I really really don’t want to wait for book ten!! The Game is Life series is my all time favorite ever. So intricately, delicately, intelligently woven!
Entertaining, though it's been a little while since I read the others so all the different story lines were difficult to remember. It also felt a bit like a filler book with not much happening in each line.
I consumed this series so quickly that the books almost blur into each other, but they were just too good to take a break! This one sets you up really well for the next, while also answering juuuuust enough questions from those before...
Another fantastic addition to the series! Probably should've read some of the previous books again though! So many worlds, so many people, so many alternate personalities.
