In an all-too-plausible future where corporate conglomerates have left the world’s governments in shambles, anyone with means has left the polluted Earth for the promise of a better life on a SpaceTech owned colony among the stars.

Maité Martinez is the daughter of an Earther Latina and a powerful Aunare man, an alien race that SpaceTech sees as a threat to their dominion. When tensions turn violent, Maité finds herself trapped on Earth and forced into hiding.

For over ten years, Maité has stayed hidden, but every minute Maité stays on Earth is one closer to getting caught.

She’s lived on the streets. Gone hungry. And found a way to fight through it all. But one night, while waitressing in a greasy diner, a customer gets handsy with her. She reacts without thinking.

Covered in blood, Maité runs, but it’s not long before SpaceTech finds her…

Arrested and forced into dangerous work detail on a volcano planet, Maité waits for SpaceTech to make their move against the Aunare. She knows that if she can’t somehow find a way to stop them, there will be an interstellar war big enough to end all life in the universe.

There’s only one question: Can Maité prevent the total annihilation of humanity without getting herself killed in the process?

Aileen was one of my MFA students at Seton Hill University - I only worked with her for one semester, but she impressed me with her willingness to take advice and feedback and run with it! She wrote the first 50 or so pages of OFF PLANET when I was her mentor and, after she finished the book, she asked me to read it for a potential quote. The beginning was so much stronger and this story really sucked me in. I love seeing my students improve and keep writing after they graduate. Aileen also has a publishing company called Ink Monster (love that name!). This book will be available March 19 and I'm going to do a Q&A and giveaway with her on my blog.

If you like SF with a touch of romance - this is your kind of book. :)

Here's the quote I send her: "In this bleak world, one spark of hope soon turns into an inferno. And just like a fireball, once this story is ignited, it just doesn't stop."

So this was a great start to a new sci-fi series, one that though starting somewhat slowly when it did actually take off it gathered such momentum steamrollering me along for the entire addictive journey.
So the story is told completely from Maité Martinez Pov.
Half Earther and half Aunare Maité is in hiding with her mother from spacetech on Earth.
After her arrest and sham sentence to a volcano prison planet, she soon starts to learn the meaning of what it is to be tortured on a daily basis.
For a YA series, this certainly doesn't pull its punches at all and with fantastic world building and a host of fully dimensional secondary characters, this was a really strong start to this new imaginative sci-fi series.
There wasn't any major romance started in this first instalment but what it does do is set the stage for further progression down the line so I am interested to see where that does go.
a couple of observations from me mainly regarding Maité and her thought process which at times did make me question her actual sanity.
The first being that I don't know why she keeps referencing feeling so safe around Declan considering his current track record with her, well let's just say I am more inclined to agree with Lorne on that subject.
Also, there's a huge difference between pride and privacy and everyone seeing the videos of her time on Abaddon in the grand scheme of things isn't really that much of a major deal, yeh I get the whys of why she didn't want them out there but considering the reasons she really just needs to deal with it after everything thing shes endured its not really a bleep on the radar.
Also, there were times I felt Maité pride prevented her from taking in the bigger picture and what needed to be done whatever her own personal feelings on the matter.
Also after all her strength and resilience throughout her ordeal for her then to go and spit her dummy out just seemed a tad out of character to me.
She basically switched to spoiled brat mode which did confound me slightly.
In conclusion, though this has definitely sucked me in and I really am now invested in what's to come so I will most certainly be watching this space for what’s to come from this series in the near future.
This really was an intense and imaginative introduction to a new series.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of Off Planet.
All opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

UPDATE:
Happy Book Birthday, Off Planet!
If you haven't heard of this book, go read the blurb and my review. If you feel like this book is calling for you then what are you waiting for? Go order it.

I received an e-ARC from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a di Aetes. I won’t quit. Not ever.

Where do I even start? This book was beyond my expectation. I thought I'd get an intergalactic war with the MC leading in the front row with her superpower. No, I didn't get that. I got a lot, A LOT MORE THAN THAT.

SpaceTech is a space colonialist, they invade and steal other's planet sources. Maité Martinez, the daughter of half Earther and half Aunare man, an alien race that SpaceTech sees as a threat to their dominion, is hiding and trying to survive on Earth with her mom. They were struggling, lived on the streets, and gone hungry. For over ten years, they have stayed hidden. But one night, an accident got her into trouble. SpaceTech is on her heels and not long, she was arrested and forced into dangerous work detail on a volcano planet. Maité waits for SpaceTech to make a move against Aunare and if she can't prevent it, she knows there will be an interstellar war big enough to end all life in the universe.

Off Planet kicked off with Maité's life on Earth then it turned quickly to an accident that changed her life and threatened her safety. The pace was perfect, it didn't take long before I was knee-deep in the story. There was no time for me to take a break, every chapter filled with action and suspense. I engaged to the story from the very beginning because the writing was enjoyable, raw, and honest. Erin laid bare every emotion and I was wondering, how could a book punch me with its words?

Being saved by someone was nice, but being able to save myself, that was a rush.

The world-building was great. Yes, I do have questions about how some things in the book work but they're no crucial part so I could go on and still enjoyed the story. Different from what I expected, the world was easy to imagine. Maybe because the Sci-Fi genre made me doubt myself I'd like the book. But as soon as I read it, any doubt was evaporated. One thing though, the Aunare reminded me a bit of Faeries with their slightly pointed ears, remarkable beauty, and amazing strength. But other than that, they are a new species I'd love to know more.

This book is nothing without its powerful plot. From what I caught, there were no important plot holes that affected the story. Everything was smooth and jaw-dropping. I still remember myself gritted my teeth, muttered silent prayers, squealed and giggled like a 4-year-old through it all. This book was so much fun, and by fun I mean it also came with pain. Where's the fun if a book doesn't torture you when you read it?

I was feeling too much, and that was dangerous. I had to keep it in. All of it. That’s how I’d stayed alive all these years. I hid everything.

Now, let's get into the characterization. Let me tell you, every character in this book was mostly loveable so it's going to be long because I just need to explain how each of them managed to get my attention.

Maité; she was strong, generous, a fighter, and a badass. She's my favorite and practically my spirit animal. I found a lot of similarities between us and even though it helped me understand her story better, it also made me feel like I was reading my own heart being poured into the pages. She destined to be great but all she wanted was to be free. She has a tough life but she keeps fighting and not for her own sake but for everyone. I loved her so much. I finally found another female character that I'll hold close to my heart after Adelina Amouteru.

“I like my privacy. Remember that or I’ll be forced to remind you.”

Roan; HE WAS THE BEST. That's it. Out of all others, I favored him the most (after Maité, of course). He was kind, funny, understanding, and would support and fight for Maité no matter what. I wish I could have a best friend like him.

“You turn her in, and I’ll kill you.” I’d never heard Roan’s voice so deep and dark. He meant every word. Roan was the best.

Declan; sweet and thoughtful. I wearied when he first appeared but he was actually nice. I just wish he wasn't so hard to himself. I truly want to know more about him. No, I don't have a crush on Declan, that's silly. I barely know him.

“You stay alive. I don’t care what it fucking takes. You do what you have to do, but you make sure you stay alive.”

Ahiga; MY BROTHER. He was strong-willed and a great friend. He might be a little too stiff but he was soft at the heart.

“I just… I can’t sit by and watch you die. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I realized I should’ve called already. I made a mistake—”

Tyler; a funny, loving friend. His easy-going made me glad for his presence in the book. But don't mistake it as a weakness because when he turned to serious mode, he can be very scary. Especially if his friends are on the line.

“You’re not giving up! You’re a goddamned fighter. We can fix all of this.”

Audrey; brave, sweet, and kind. She's the type of a perfect girlfriend everyone could ask for. Basically, she's my sister in every way and she deserves all the love in the entire universe.

“You focus on me. Focus on my words. On my hand in yours.” She squeezed it, but I couldn’t find the energy to squeeze back. “I got you into this, and I’m not leaving your side until it’s done.”

Lorne; a powerful male. That kinda sums it up. He was mysterious, the type of person who hides their feelings and demanding. Hmm, you can tell that I don't really like him but that's because, in this book, he wasn't being described other than beautiful, strong, intense, and beautiful. Well, I really hope I can get along with him in the sequel.

“I’m Aunare. I love seeing your skin glow. I want to see the patterns on your skin. I want to read your glyphs.”

Overall, Off Planet was a spectacular read. I'm not exaggerating anything, this book is truly amazing. It wasn't only about a girl trying to save the universe.
It is about struggling to survive with trauma and terror.
It is about the stubbornness to keep fighting even when you're only a breath away from giving up.
It is about making a hard decision, doing something dangerous for your loved ones even though your own life was on the stake.
It is about trying to find your freedom only to realize a massive and difficult duty on your shoulder.

If you like a strong MC with flaws, the fight against people in power, a bunch of great character, fast-paced and amazing story, I recommend you to read Off Planet.

Off Planet came as a total pleasant surprise. Sci-fi is usually totally hit-and-miss for me, and this one was definitely a hit. It was well-written, with strong characters, strong worldbuilding, and a breakneck plot that kept my eyes glued to the page and my brain still in the story even when I wasn't reading.

The book took a few chapters to really get going, but when it did I was so invested in Maité and her story. The plot doesn't stop, there are so many twists and turns, and every time you think that something can't get worse, what happens is even worse than you were imagining. I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book because there's so much that happens. I thought this book was way longer than it actually was because it's so packed with action. Maité spends the whole book fighting against SpaceTech on the planet Abbadon, even though she's trapped on a hell planet where everyone wants to kill her.

I loved Maité. It's been a while since I've seen a character go through this much and fight every second to survive. I was not expecting how absolutely brutal some parts of Off Planet is. What Maité goes through in the book is horrifying--the planet she spends most of the book on is basically literally called Hell, and she's there because people want her to die in the cruelest and most painful way possible. I felt so much for her, because Erin's writing is so raw and real. All of Maité's pain and fear throughout the book is described in excruciating detail--and Erin didn't skimp on discussing the trauma it caused Maité, either.

The secondary characters were also all fairly fleshed-out. Maité is surrounded by so many sympathetic characters to make up for all the nasty ones in the book. I also liked the general lack of romance during Off Planet. There's hints at a romance with one of the Aunare, Lorne, and maybe a possible love triangle with a SpaceTech defector, Declan. But it definitely wasn't a focus--just offhand comments on how attractive these boys were, which, okay, but it didn't interfere with my enjoyment. This story is Maité's story, and about her survival, which was something I really liked.

The worldbuilding was strong, and there was a lot to figure out, but I didn't find myself particularly confused. There's SpaceTech, an evil interstellar corporation that basically has authoritarian control over their territory, and the Aunare, an alien race that was wiped off of Earth. I thought the Aunare were quite interesting, especially with their unique physiology and how they interact with humans, especially SpaceTech. I did have a lot of questions that I'd like to see answered in the next book, however. There's not a whole lot about the Aunare and its culture, because Maité is kept in the dark for most of the book.

Readers should be aware that there's a fairly graphic scene of sexual assault early on in the book, and Maité shows symptoms of PTSD.

Off Planet was such an engaging and engrossing read, and I honestly enjoyed every second of it, even if some pats had me gritting my teeth in sympathy. If you like sci-fi, you'll probably like this book, and even if you're not a sci-fi but you're a fan of amazing female characters who never stop fighting, you might like Off Planet.

Set in a future where giant corporation SpaceTech pretty much controls all of the human colonies across the universe this is the story of Maité, a half-human half-aunare young woman who is just trying to live her life in peace. SpaceTech have been trying to start a war with the aunare race for years, starting 10 years ago with the massacre of all aunare people living on planets they controlled, now they'll stop at nothing to destroy an entire species just to keep their control over humanity.

Maité and her mother have been hiding on earth for 10 years hoping that her father, who is a powerful general in the aunare army, will find them and help them get to safety. If Maité is discovered by SpaceTech then it will be a death sentence but it's getting harder and harder to live under the radar. She is so close to freedom when she makes a dreadful mistake, one that could cost her everything. After her arrest she is sentenced to a work detail on a dangerous volcanic planet, every day she comes a little closer to death and if her father's representatives don't get to her in time to save her then war will be inevitable.

I thought Off Planet was a brilliant start to this new series, I've not read anything by Aileen Erin before but after enjoying this so much I think I definitely need to check out some of her backlist. I really liked Maité's character, her aunare blood makes her stronger and faster than most but that's almost more of a curse than a blessing as she's constantly having to try to hide her abilities so that people don't figure out who or what she really is. Her life has been tough but she has a strong bond with her mother and some close friends who are always there for her and even though she's constantly in danger she always tries to help others too.

This is only the first book in the series but we've already met some really interesting characters both human and alien that I want to spend more time with. Roan is like a best friend and brother rolled into one, Declan was sent to save her but to be honest hasn't been all that great at doing the job, she made some interesting allies on Abaddon but I think the person I'm most curious about is Lorne, the aunare who will stop at nothing to rescue her even if that does mean starting a war that could end up killing billions. One thing I'm really hoping is that we're not going to see the formation of a dreaded love triangle though, there were hints that it might end up going in that direction but I really hope the author surprises me and doesn't take the easy drama route.

The world that the author has created is an interesting one, I was fascinated and horrified by the conditions on the volcanic planet so appropriately called Abaddon and I'm really looking forward to finding out more about the aunare home world too. I'm a bit curious about why this is being marketed as YA, Maité is 20 and her friends are all her age or a fair bit older and although the story is appropriate for teens (there's no sex, I didn't notice much in the way of swearing and even when Maité is being tortured it doesn't go into super graphic detail) I would still class this as an adult sci-fi because of the age of the characters and the themes it covers. Maité doesn't think or act like a teenage narrator so the YA label is misleading in my opinion. That really is a minor issue as I think the story will be enjoyed by both teens and adults but I do think it's important to clarify these things correctly. I've already added the next book, Off Balance, to my wish list but it's going to feel like a long wait until it's release next year!

An amazing attention-grabbing story of two races in the verge of war that could end in blood!

I loved it I loved it I loved it! Oh, did I mention I loved it yet? The plot, the setting, the world-building, the characters, the writing and the intensity, I loved it all!

Maité is half human and half alien living on Earth where a corporate government hunts the alien Aunare race. She has to hide her special abilities from everyone or she would be as good as dead. But when some things go down, she is sent for forced labor on a volcano planet called Abbadon and that's where the story really picks up and things get much more intense, like you have no idea. You won't see any of it coming. It will just blast into your face and make your heart race!

I absolutely loved Maité as a character. She is the sweetest and loving but also strong-willed and a total bad-ass through and through. She deals with a lot in this book, some more painful than others, she really goes through hell. I also loved her best friend, Roan! I loved her mom and just all the side characters.

And obviously I adored the romance in this, it's literally everything! The romance between Maité and a certain guy is the purest thing in the world. And the way he cares for her like she is his entire world melted my heart. Okay this is kinda a slow burn romance so technically not much happens but they have this connection with each other which you'll find out later in the book and you just know it will be so adorable!

The writing is once again incredible, you can't expect anything less from Aileen Erin. I love how descriptive it is but in a really fast paced way. The writing is so vivid in parts that I could almost feel the physical pain that she was feeling. I was on the verge of crying even, because she was crying and I hated seeing her hurt.

I would recommend going into the book pretty much blind and not read the whole synopsis because I feel like you'll be much more surprised and shocked and you get to experience it all on your own. Such an amazing book and I know I'm going to absolutely adore the whole series!

"For the first time in what felt like eons, I had hope. I had a real, shiny hope burning deep in my soul, and I wasn't about to let anything or anyone mess that up."

*Thoughts*

Off Planet, by author Aileen Erin, is the first installment in the authors Aunare Chronicles. 19-year old Maité Martinez lives in a reality that makes her very existence, the daughter of a Human mother and an Aunare Man who is second in line to the Aunare King, dangerous to her health. In fact, it could get her killed on sight if the truth ever gets out. But, what's even worse, is that if she is caught, it could lead to a war between Earth and Aunare that will likely see no victors when all is said and done.

Kind of space-opera, kind of not? Off Planet intrigues me because it’s kind of about interstellar war, or at least the tricksy politics that can lead to an interstellar war, yet its main characters aren’t (with a few exceptions) soldiers or politicians. The protagonist is literally just trying to live her life, mind her own business, but others can’t have that. Aileen Erin crafts some fairly interesting and intense situations and brings a fair amount of creativity to the worlds she shows us here. Thanks to NetGalley and INscribe Digital for the eARC.

Maité Martinez is half-human, half-Aunare. This is dangerous while she still lives on Earth, which is essentially ruled by a single corporation, SpaceTech. Back when Maité was a kid, SpaceTech massacred Aunare who lived on its planets, and “halfers” are not welcome. So she hides who she is, biding her time until she can get herself and her mother off this planet. But when people from her past show up looking for her, because she happens to be the daughter of the second-most powerful Aunare, Maité’s fragile little life falls apart. Exiled to Abaddon, SpaceTech’s gruelling mining labour camp, Maité barely survives while she and her allies try to figure out if there is any way she can escape that place that doesn’t mean interstellar war.

Off Planet takes a little to get going. Even though Erin sets up the main conflict fairly early, the first act still feels somewhat long to me. Honestly, though? This is a rare instance where I’m comfortable saying you should hang in there: the climax is worth it, at least in my opinion. I was tearing up while Maité screamed, “Do it! Jump!” and was having flashbacks to Battlestar Galactica and Starbuck screaming, “WE’RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!” Chills down my spine, the moment was just so intense. So, well done there, Erin: you create a sense of urgency and tension as we wonder who, if anyone, will survive the final battle. While the book kind of ends on a cliffhanger, it resolves enough loose ends to leave me satisfied.

I’m rather disappointed with the antagonists. We don’t actually meet too many of them. We briefly encounter Jason Murtagh in the most uncomfortable way, of course. Beyond that, all we really know about them comes from voices and proxies and what Maité’s friends tell us about them. They are the bad guys. They hate aliens/Aunare and just want to make war and money! It’s a fairly one-dimensional motivation, and while I find the idea of an interstellar corporate feudal hierarchy as compelling and believable as the next person living in the 21st century would … I need my villains to be a bit more fleshed out here.

The same could be said for Maité’s allies, to be honest. There aren’t that many shades of grey here—we get a few characters, like Matthew and Carl, who seem fairly neutral. But it seems like most of the people we encounter are either in Murtagh’s pocket or totally on Maité’s side (and deduce, fairly quickly, her terribly-kept secret). Don’t get me wrong: I’m not complaining that she has so many people who want to help her. I just wish we could see more characters who are grappling with the tension between helping her and being punished, or characters who start off well-disposed to her but then betray her for some reason.

People are complex, is what I’m saying. For the most part, though, the characters of Off Planet are not. Maité herself is probably a notable exception, thankfully. I like how Erin manages to endow Maité with sufficient agency despite her role as a pawn in this interstellar chess game. Maité displays an incredible amount of dignity and strength (though I’m annoyed by how often Declan and Lorne tell her this, and Declan sharing those videos without her consent crosses a line). Most importantly, I like that she is always looking for a solution instead of listening to those who are telling her to wait around until Declan or someone else can extract her. That’s my kind of protagonist!

Off Planet had some highs and lows for me. I’d rather a book that’s up and down in quality, however, than something that is just aggressively mediocre—and I can safely say that Off Planet isn’t that. Will I read the next book? Definitely maybe.

Recently, I listened to a podcast interview with Aileen Erin and was inspired by her author journey. Major publishers didn't want to print what she was interested in writing, and so she started her own independent publishing company, Ink Monster. Love it!

I picked up her novel Off Planet, and I am happy to report that I enjoyed this unique science fiction YA adventure. (Not to mention the fabulous cover!)

Maité, a half Earther, half Aunare teen, has finally run out of luck. After hiding out on Earth for ten years, SpaceTech officials finally catch and arrest her. They transfer Maité to a mining planet where she is forced to endure difficult and dangerous labor.

What follows is one life-threatening adventure after another. Friendships are formed, trust is tested, pain is endured, and secrets are revealed. I recommend this fun read. And don't worry, there's plenty of room for more adventure (and possibly romance) in the next installment.

Why is nobody hyping this book?! It is so good!! I couldn’t stop listening and am promptly grabbing the book two audiobook and diving in. Right now. It’s like the perfect fantasy romance sci-fi mashup. If you loved the peril of Fourth Wing, the vibes of Star Wars, and the romance of ACOTAR, you need to pick up this series.

** Come visit me at https://smadasbooksmack.blogspot.com/ **

Hiding out on Earth, waiting until the day where the authorities would discover that she is a halfer- half human half Aunare alien, Maite knows that it is only time until she will be arrested. When tensions are already high, Maite ends up attacking a handsy customer at the restaurant she waitresses at- a customer who just so happens to be someone in power. Maite ends up arrested and sent off planet to work her punishment off. But she may not survive her punishment, which could lead to war.

Aileen's Alpha Girl series captivated me from the first chapter and ever since I discovered them I have impatiently waited to get my hands on the next book. When I saw that she had a new series coming out about aliens and outer space I was so excited, I knew I was going to read it. Hands down, Off Planet is unlike anything Aileen has written before (and I can say this with confidence as a super fan) and it was unlike anything else I have read period. With elements of dystopian, science fiction, an underlying mystery and a mysterious guy lurking on the fringes, I can say that this is a must read.

Being saved by someone was nice, but being able to save myself, that was a rush.

Maite was such an awesome character, totally capable and skilled, able to take on any opponent and have the upper hand (without using her alien mojo). I love that she enjoyed fighting and training, but she also enjoyed being able to educate others to be able to protect themselves. Off Planet was in no way a romance, but there were a couple of tasty men added to the list, my favorite being Declan, the honorable human son of Maite's enemy. And then there was the mysterious Lorne who has a connection to Maite she doesn't understand. I am interested to see how all of this will play out next.

Let's just talk about the fact that this is very much an adult book. I went into it expecting this to be another cute YA sci-fy romance story, but Off Planet was not that even a little bit. Between language, sexual assault and overall content and interactions, I would classify this as adult science fiction. Not that that is a problem, just a disclaimer for new readers. There were a few times where Maite was basically being tortured and due to Aileen's descriptive writing it was so real that I felt her pain and wanted to intervene.

My biggest problem with Off Planet is that I am left wanting more and the next book is not coming out until 2020! Sniff sniff, I will try and work on my non-existent patience, but we all know that is a losing battle.

Ever since I got the eARC of In Command and On Mission, I was very excited to dive into this series. So, when I saw that Off Planet was finally available via my library app. Well, it's safe to say that I freaked out.

In it, you will meet Maité. She is definitely living a secret life (if you think about it) and has to keep what she actually is hidden from basically everyone that isn't family. The reason why? Well, people wont be very happy with her and will probably want to make her suffer or kill her. But details...

It doesn't take long for someone to figure it all out which definitely makes her life suck. She is constantly suffering and trying to protect her loved ones. Plus.. ya know.. humanity and shit. So she has the world on her shoulders right now but she sure as shit wont give up easily. No matter what these space assholes throw at her.

Along the way, she gets hurt pretty freaking badly. I'm talking about shoes being melted to her feet kind of bad. Honestly, it sounded painful and super gross. I would have passed out or died if I went through what she did. It also doesn't help that people started to figure out her secret during this as well. So, yeah, she's kind of screwed - or is she?

Luckily for Maité, some people on this adventure have a heart and soul. They are willing to help save and protect her. Which, yay - I loved that moment because she was finally getting more allies. Now I'm not going to lie her, a lot of crap went down in this book. It was completely action packed and even gave you some emotional moments here and there. All I'm going to say is that I couldn't put this book down. It was just so freaking addicting and I wanted to know if I was going to get a certain reunion and some bad ass revenge against a certain space asshole.

In the end, I'm so freaking pumped to dive into the next book. I still have so many unanswered questions and I'm hoping to get answers before this series is over.

I was sent an eARC of this book from Netgalley in an exchange for an honest review.

Off Plantet is a great way to start off a sci-fi series based around politics, intergalactic wars and the prejudices in different alien races. I'll admit that I actually requested to read this book purely because of the cover and title and the fact that it was sci-fi. I didn't read the synopsis and I'm quite glad I didn't because it gives away the first 100 pages or so and with it being only 350 pages Im glad I didn't know what to expect.

From the very start this book is packed full of action and the pressures Maité has to face being the part human and part alien that she is. The alien race and their abilities were definitely an original idea that I've read and it added quite a lot to the story in terms of whether or not she was going to be recognized.

I think one of the strong parts of this book overall was Alieen Erin's ability to write any type of emotion. I felt like I was feeling every little thing Maité felt because it was so honestly written. There were full paragraphs which had me crying because of how strong but also vulnerable Maité is and how much her character developed throughout the story. The also dealt with ptsd and depression very honestly and I know there is going to be a lot more in the second book and I can't wait to read more from this author.

I'm hoping there isn't going to be more hints at a love triangle in the next book but I do want to see how the relationship is explained and hopefully it's not in a slightly weird way, because I love Lornes character. Another thing that slightly bothered me was the crystals, I felt like the explanation of what they were and how they worked were quite rushed so it kind of took me out of the story when I had to work it out for myself.

I will definitely be on the look out for the next book.

pooled ink Reviews:

I NEED BOOK TWO!!! AHHH!!!

It didn't matter how long life forced me to put down this book day to day, the moment I picked it back up I was sucked right back into the story. Every. Time. With every chapter the emotions, the intensity, and the intrigue grows until you find yourself out of pages and desperate to know what will happen next.

We start off on Earth, although it's a grungy futuristic world run by an evil corporation called SpaceTech, but it isn't long before we begin following Maité across the universe with a hotbed of action biting at her heels. There was never a dull moment, everyone was always constantly working towards something, obstacles rose in a natural way, and even with the many setbacks thrown into Maité's path I never wanted to groan with an eye roll but rather would grip the book tighter eager to see what move she'd make next. The combination of character, plot, and world struck that magic chord in me that put this right up there on my favorites list.

Off Planet is but the beginning in a truly spectacular science fiction drama. With a kickass heroine who bears the future on her shoulders, a plot that melts down reality and time until you're lost to all but the story flashing before you, characters that will win your heart and have you pledge loyalty, and a world that is wicked cool...beware, for this is a recipe for addiction. An absolute recommend for both sci-fi fans and newbies alike!

When first listening to this book, I didn't like it. But, knowing that it has good reviews (4 stars here on Goodreads), I told myself to stick to it because maybe it gets better. Here I am 15% into listening to this story and it's just not doing it for me. Not only is the writing mediocre, I just don't give a hoot about the protagonist. She has no depth, no real emotion. There's no connection. Top that with lazy dialogue, it can't continue. Aileen Erin tries so hard to have natural cussing in her dialogue that it totally backfires. I've said it before, cussing for cussing's sake doesn't work! Keep it natural. Heck, make up cuss word that fit the world/universe that you build.

I have a feeling that Aileen Erin was totally inspired by Andy Weir and his book Artemis. And was like "Hey, I can write about book about a "strong", carefree, tenacious, female character!" Yet, managed to not do this.

Maybe I gave up too soon. Maybe the narrator ruined it for me. Maybe.

Ok so I was pretty excited to read this book because I tend to love YA sci-fi. But… This book has so much cussing in it I nearly didn’t make it through. There was a period around 20% where I almost gave up, and if it hadn’t been an audiobook I might have, but I decided to push through to the end.

I think the book really started to pick up once the main character got off of earth, but to me it seemed a little unrealistic that she faced everything she did in the way that she did. I also often found her a bit annoying with her stubbornness and pride, but I can see that as a fault she might grow out of through this series.

I will say the idea is the crystals and how they are harvested was very creative and I liked that!

I think the thing that sealed my fate to not finishing this series is the blatant set up for a love triangle. I HATE Love triangles as a trope and can’t really stomach more of them or more of the cussing if it’s the same in the next book.

I’m sad, because I really wanted to like this one, but I won’t continue the series.

‼️LOTS of language

This was an audiobook read for me.

Reviewed on http://bookaddict.live,
I love a good Sci-fi and this is good sci-fi with Dystopian world where SpaceTech one of the biggest corporation has taken control of all Earth’s governments. Maité is half Aunare has been living on Earth with her mother for ten years.
As times moves on it getting harder to hide her abilities. The author has created a world with interesting characters and with plenty of action to keep me glued to the page. Roan is her best friend and has helped her all the years on Earth.
I not going to carry on telling you the plot, except to say it kept me reading non stop even in the night as I needed to find out what happens. This is a great world builder as we get to know all players involved. If this is book one then I only have one thing to say is where is book two.
I the moment am listening to the Audiobook which is a long one, it bringing to life the characters for me as I work Great read

2.5 STARS: I didn't quite like it, but I didn't absolutely hate it. The writing was okay.

Egh, this book was okay. It was kind of a pain to read and I only finished it because I paid for it.

PLOT
The plot was very badly paced. The first 40% dragged and was too slow. The action started picking up around the 50% mark. Even then, it was still slow. Keep in mind this story focuses more on small-scale issues and personal conflicts to overcome. There's not a ton of the space opera feel. In addition, a lot of the conflict (both by scene and as a whole) felt understated or simply did not have high-enough stakes. I felt like this could have been better developed and thought through.

CHARACTERS(that I consider the most important characters in the book)
Amihanna/Maité is the main and only POV character. She has fight and spirit, but doesn't seem to be very well-rounded. Throughout the book she is either angry or exhausted, it seems. There's not much depth to her character.

Ahiga is Amihanna/Maité's mentor throughout the meat of the book. I thought Ahiga was interesting and somewhat conflicted. However, he appears after a lot of the beginning has passed and disappears just as quickly near the end.

Declan is a SpaceTech employee/soldier who works to save Amihanna/Maité. He seemed rather flat but his conflict with Lorne was interesting.

Lorne is an Aunare man with a strange tie to Amihanna/Maité and is working to save her. He had obvious flaws while still being a romantic love interest. However, his controlling nature with Amihanna/Maité was really problematic for me. In addition, there were some issues with consent when it came to some video evidence that incriminated their enemies, but also revealed private and sensitive scenarios involving Amihanna/Maité. The lack of communication was shown to be something that Amihanna/Maité didn't like, but accepted anyway. I didn't appreciate this.

WORLDBUILDING
The worldbuilding was one of the better aspects of this book. I liked the concept of the Aunare people and their culture. The idea of SpaceTech taking over Earth and various other planets was interesting too, but didn't seemed as fleshed out. I think the two settings in the book (Earth: New Albuquerque and Abaddon/Apollyon) were interesting as well but not as fleshed out as it could have been.

WRITING
The writing felt like it was lacking vividness and description. There was a lot of telling rather than showing, especially in character's emotions. I felt like it lacked complexity. Especially, in the dialogue most characters said exactly what they thought which felt unrealistic. It was too straight forward and people understood each other way too quickly and easily, which contributed to a lack of conflict.
Another thing was cuss words. I understand there are differing levels in YA fiction, but there were many f-bombs throughout the first 80% of the book. It kind of threw me off guard (especially for the genre), and they didn't seem to be well-placed.
Also, the lack of female relationships was strange for me. There was the mom and Audrey, but the sheer number of male characters outnumbered the females by A LOT. It was odd that so many of the male characters were attracted to the main character as well.

SUMMARY: This book had decent worldbuilding but a dragging plot and possibly problematic interactions with men. All in all, though, if you're just looking for something to read it's okay.

Thank you for the opportunity to read Off Planet by Aileen Erin, the first book in the Aunare Chronicles.

I have been in a bit of a reading slump lately, nothing has held my attention until Off Planet; I was hooked, completely engrossed and wanted more! I loved every moment of it and I was actually disappointed when I finished and realised the next book won’t be released until 2020. It actually left me little teary on a few occasions reading about the MC, I can’t remember the last time that a book affected me so emotionally.

Our MC is Maite Martinez, a halfer – she is half Earther and half Aunare; an alien race that Earth sees as a threat. Maite has remained hidden from SpaceTech – an organisation that invade and steal other planets sources, running with her mother and at times living in poverty to avoid capture, she also teaches self-defence classes and works at a diner; on Aunare she is the lost di Aetes heir. The capture of Maite would mean war between Earth and Aunare so it was vital that she remain hidden.

When Maite blows her cover, she is sentenced to the worst planet in the known galaxy, Abaddon, a volcano planet prison where she is more or less tortured daily in the job that she is assigned. I absolutely adored Maite! She was a strong but stubborn character and despite what she had to endure continued to look out for her friends over herself. You couldn’t help but hope for relief and happiness for her after everything that she had to endure, my heart completely and utterly broke for her. Her life was tough but I can see that she is destined for greatness, she’s a born leader.

The secondary characters were written well – Roan, Ahiga, Audrey, Santiago and Tyler were fabulous support to Maite; Declan didn’t make the best decisions for Maite and to me came across as weak, I couldn’t quite work out his intentions towards her & I often felt he’d failed her more than helped; I understood his predicament but his choices and actions were poorly executed. Lorne was always watching and observing and to be honest had me swooning! He was mysterious and I loved the way he supported, guided and seemed to worship Maite, we soon find out why which I am keen to see explored further but their interactions were perfect and I’m hoping to see more romance in the next book.

The pacing of Off Planet was perfect, I was completely engrossed in the story; the writing was engaging and the plot was flawless; I would have loved more background as to why Earth and Aunare were so desperate to go to war and what the end result (besides complete annihilation) would be; was it only a group so focussed on power and control or was there more? I’d love to learn more about the Aunare and their differences – besides physically and their strength. I hope this is explored more in the sequel.

I loved this book, super excited for the next book, Off Balance which has an anticipated February 2020 release date.

Off Planet was a remarkably low-effort yet thoroughly enjoyable read. I knew from the start that I was taking a risk with this one - I don't have the greatest track-record with YA scifi - but this novel did not have the same tonal and story pitfalls that I've grown used to.

That is to say, the narration and story were both quite unique. For a while, I was quite concerned for how easy everything was going for the protagonists. It seemed unrealistic considering their isolation and the sheer amount of power SpaceTech was shown to wield. But the narrative fully addressed my disbelief in a way that I'm not sure many other books have. Usually, when things seem like they're going too well, they go poorly soon thereafter or just continue going too well. Off Planet offered a different outcome.

Beyond that... Yeah, it's hard to talk about why I liked this one without revealing too much, so I'll just reiterate that the narration and plot are pretty damn solid. It really is an exceptional exploration of corruption, too.

I'm really looking forward to reading the next installment, although I will admit to some trepidation. The last chapters seem to imply that consequences of trauma and some boy problems are in Maite's future - I'm just crossing my fingers that the former takes precedence, because the latter would completely change the tone of the story, and not in a good way. Regardless, there are questions that I want answered, so you can count on me being back here to read Off Balance once it's released. (And someone really needs to give some of her friends and family a wake-up call because holy shit it's not fair to put all this pressure on the poor girl, even without the trauma.)

Off Planet is a well-written exploration of one half-alien girl's efforts to overcome a corrupt corporation/government that made her very existence a crime. It's the story of the impact she has on the lives of other, and how she struggles with the belief that her impact needs to be more. A strong start to a series, leaves plenty of room for further development.

If you don't feel like reading the whole review, I'll sum it up for you: a fascinating world, enjoyable characters, many inconstistencies and a ton of untouched potential. Worth the read, though!

For us, little more detail-oriented folks:
1, I really admire the world building. Everything just made sense and it was so interesting to explore!
Now onto some criticism, though. Despite the fact that I enjoyed this book very much, it had its faults.
2, there were many inconsistencies, as I said, mainly in the characters' behaviour. One thing was stated (example: Maité/Amihanna had been on the run for thirteen years and she didn't trust anybody except for her best friend) and a totally different thing happened in reality (when a SpaceTech officer came into her flat claiming he was in contact with her father and wanted to help her, she was totally okay with it). I made a whole list, but there's no point in writing it out, you get the point.
3, the pacing was all over the place.

4, I feel like the main problem is that although the ideas behind this book, the outline of the plot and the structure of everything were done extremely well, the execution lacked organisation and a general direction.

For all of these reasons, despite the fact that I enjoyed the story and am continuing with the series, I'm giving Off Planet 2.75 stars.

There was not one moment of OFF PLANET that I didn't totally love what I was reading.

This story sucked me in and kept me interested until the very end. Maité is a simple yet complicated heroine. All she wants to do is stay under the radar and live her life, but her life was complicated from the moment she was born and she is now learning just who she is and by the end what's expected of her.

I loved the characters and I loved the world. All the characters brought a little something to the storyline and the world was both intriguing and well developed.

There is a bit of a love triangle happening. I like both of the guys, but think one is defiantly MADE for Maité and the attraction to the other is just there because Maité hasn't yet realized the true extent of the connection to the other as well as she is fighting her destiny.

I can't wait to read more. I wish Aileen had book two up on her Goodreads so I could add it to my wishlist and have a date to look forward too.

I am a long time fan of Aileen Erin's Alpha Girl Series and was excited to start her first book in the Aunare Chronicles, Off Planet. The book follows a young woman, Maite, who is half Earthling and half Aunare as she tries to escape Earth after hiding for many years and reunite with her father at their home planet. She's helped along the way by a loyal group of human friends and the beginnings of a love triangle seem to be developing between her, a human male and Aunare male that I believe will be revealed more in the next book.
The suspense started as a slow burn allowing the reader to get to know the characters and then geared up to a thrilling conclusion. I'm excited to see where Aileen takes these characters in the next book, a great read!

This one is seriously hard to review without spoilers, so I'm gonna keep it as short and bleak as possible.
Off Planet is an intriguing and fun introduction to the Aunare Chronicles series.
I really enjoyed the world the story is set in, it's vividly described and easy to immerse yourself into. The plot is strong and well-paced, it's interesting, it's what makes this book so good. All the characters are well-developed, but Maité is especially easy to relate to. The writing flows beautifully, it's easy to consume and it kept my attention throughout.
This is a great book and YA sci-fi fans should definitely give it a shot.

I thought the plot was really good, but I gave it only 3 stars because of the excessive profanity. It was hard to enjoy the book when every other sentence had swear words in it.

Oh man, there’s just so much to say, but I can’t without writing spoilers!!! Don’t worry, I’m not going to spoil anything, it’ll just be difficult😂😂😂

When I started reading this book, I felt like I was cheating on “Becoming Alpha.” That book is tied for my most favorite book ever with “Ella Enchanted,” so it was a bit hard for me. THAT’S how much I enjoyed this book. I loved Maité, Roan, and Lorne. Not Declan so much.

I felt like Declan didn’t really do enough to stop all the bad things from happening to Maité. I really feel that Lorne did the better job. I’m going to literally cry if it turns out Maité ends up with Declan and not Lorne. The ending was looking a bit weird...

OOF. So much I want to say, but can’t!😭😩(People, you need to message me when you’ve finished this book so I can talk about every spoiler possible with you!!!)

The thing that lost a whole star for me was the middle of the book. The same thing was happening to Maité over and over again. I was getting bored with it. You wouldn’t believe how relieved I was to finally get to something new and different than before.

One part that really had me laughing was at the end, when Maité finds a window to exit from. That brought me back to the first Alpha Girls book when Tessa literally jumped out of like three windows. It turns out Tessa’s not the only one who enjoys doing so!

That’s all I have to say without spoiling! PLEASE, people, message me so we can talk about the book after you finish it! Happy reading and I hope you give this book a shot!
