Word padding

Too much discussion of food, drinks and clothing detracts from what is an excellent story line, it may fill out the book but makes me want to skip over entire paragraphs to get to the meat.

Juvenile

I DNF the series. I disliked the MC in most of Book one, until the end of it as she seemed to fill out as a person and developed a personal mission. It was sort of a "Lars and the Real Girl" change for the better. This would have been better still, if the main character channeled Sandra Bullock and went Ocean's Eight, instead of a quasi-Disney princess route. Some of the other characters also seemed to fill out enough to become real people soon. The cute factor in dialogue is being replaced by adult female and hopefully the other characters will follow suit. I even got the sense of a "faux steampunk" universe, which is a plus though that label in the title was kind of a stretch. The background universe can handle some stretch and a bit more detail. Reading on to see where this collection goes.

I lost interest about a quarter of the way through book 2. The MC was too contradictory on the use of weapons and there is some confusion in my mind about her hand to hand martial proficiency. Her failure to consider a bodyguard is strange. She still gets the hots for two of her team but doesn't do anything about it. As a guy, I expected that she would say "let's try this" or put it aside and get on with life. She talks and acts like a willful teen but is leading a crime fighting team? Her reactions may be normal but don't feel mature.

The SC is another mystery, not in a good way. They are ruthless criminals but don't just end people who cause problems for their organization. I can't picture what is going on with the police or the government in general. I don't see any framework for the legal code, if there is one. Why police, how many, what are their duties and why are there no repercussions to destroying evidence in this advanced society. As the characters almost seem real, the society they inhabit becomes more vague or more attention is drawn to the vagueness.

The plot and the background are too thin for me to care about or understand how the outcomes occur. There are a few editing errors but the problems with the book are all that other stuff (especially the weird handling of racism -using a derogatory term repeatedly for a teammate's species, reducing interspecies sexual relationships to "it was college experimentation", "I can say racist things because I'm of mixed human ancestry" and a few other things). To the writer: aren't we all of mixed human ancestry and maybe offending your friends isn't very human at all.

Completely captivating characters and stories

This collection of stories is very hard to put down. I enjoyed the different alien characters and the group dynamics. The storyline of each book makes you wonder what will happen in the next book. This was very much an enjoyable read and I will be on the lookout for more from the author.

Excellent space opera pulp

Long story arc, slow to develop the characters but they grow on you through the course of the books. Interesting scenario and plot that carries across all of the books. Worth the read.

Too slow

Usual mishmash of bad spelling and grammar plus some continuity errors. Not a bad read but not a good. one either.Much too slow and dragged out.
