She almost died in a fire and it wasn’t accidental… Can her trusty canine sidekick and new love interest help to reveal the arsonist before he can strike another match?
Her entire life, everyone has just assumed that Nicole “Hawk” Hawkins was a pretty face without much substance. Now to prove them all wrong, she’s taken on the toughest job she could find—as a Redwood Cove firefighter. She’s not on the job long before a deadly fire nearly takes her life, scarring and disfiguring her once gorgeous features in the process.
The worst part of it all? What happened wasn’t an accident.
Arnold "Snowball" Winters, a detective with Redwood Cove's police force, has loved Nicole since the day she first joined the station, and this new change in her appearance doesn’t change what’s in his heart. He’ll do whatever it takes to help her recover both her personal and work lives, recruiting Chance, a young Golden Retriever, to help in this mission.
No sooner is Nicole released from her lengthy hospital stay than another freak fire threatens her again—this time in her own home. Can Arnold and Chance find the culprit in time to save Nicole’s life… and maybe even win her heart while they’re at it?
Healing Hawk is book eight in the Gold Coast Retrievers series. Each book stands completely on its own, but you'll have more fun if you read them all together!

Healing Hawk (Gold Coast Retrievers #8) by Becky Muth
Healing Hawk is a jumble of emotions. These characters have the power to bleed a reader dry with the intensity they exude. Hawk is one of those characters that is not easy to explore, but hard to walk away from. Nicole is a restless spirit. She's a fighter, despite the hard knocks life continues to throw her way. She doesn't need a hero, she needs to know that despite tragedy, she is still the warrior, she's always been. And that no matter what, she will never not be worthy of love. Ms. Muth appeals to the heart with this razor sharp, courageous read.
Firefighters, policemen and puppies... What more do you want? When you've read Protecting Peyton, Becky Muth's first book in this series, you probably don't like Nicole (or Hawk) very much. Even the author herself didn't like her... I haven't read it. I like Nicole, a lot. But Luke and Peyton have a little trouble with liking her. But they try, for their friend Arnold's sake. Apart from that tension, there are the fires. And since Nicole is a firefighter, there is danger. Nicole is courageous and lonely. But Chance helps her with the latter. Beautiful story!
Healing Hawk by Becky Muth is Book 8 of the Gold Coast Retrievers series. This is such an emotional book that is hard to put down. You also need to keep the tissues handy. Nicole "Hawk" Hawkins is one tough female in one of the toughest jobs: firefighter. Injured and disfigured in a fire that was not an accident she joins with new detective Arnold "Snowball" Winters to find the perpetrator. This story keeps you on the edge of your seat as it unfolds. I love the role Chance, a golden retriever, plays in this story. A must read!
Loved this book. Love how the author used firefighters, police officers and dogs to write a great story. Keep the tissues close by while reading this book. Nicole use to be a model but now is a firefighter. How does the male firefighters feel? she has to trust herself or think she does since she grew up in the foster care system. Why is there so many fires lately being set by someone and seems that Nicole Hawk is always there or getting hurt in them. One fire sent her to the burn unit. Now Snowball is called in to investigate and he must investigate the possibility that Hawk is starting the fires, but is she? Healing Hawk by Becky Muth is the 8th book in the Gold Coast Retrievers series an a wonderful read. Nicole “Hawk” Hawkins left the artificial world of modeling to become a firefighter. Growing up in the foster care system taught Hawk to only to trust herself and she had a hard time making friends. There are a series of arson fires that are happening in which Hawk is hurt in the fire. Arnold “Snowball” Winter a new detective is investigating the arsons and has a crush on Hawk. Snowball brings Chance a golden retriever to the hospital for Hawk so she would have a friend. Loved how this book deal with friendships, trust and love. I highly recommend reading this book. I received an arc copy of this book for an honest review of it.
Whereas the foreword of the previous book was heartfelt and heartbreaking (yet hopeful!) this one was heartfelt and cute. The cutest thing ever! Having a pet can enrich your life so much!
Then the story. I am in love with this story!!! We already knew Arnold (Snowball) and Nicole (Hawk) from book 1. Hawk didn’t have a very positive role in the first book, but there’s more to her. Much more. She’s been through so much pain in her life! One advise: have the tissues ready to go. Seriously. Don’t ignore this advise, trust me! Because I crrried. And cried. The story kept me on the edge of my seat. Had I not needed sleep badly, I would have read this in one go! But the HEA alone was worth it. Sweet! Intense. Beautiful. Impressive. Impressive. And yes, imprrrressive! It just didn’t suffice to say it only once ;)
Firefighters and police officers put their lives on the line even when not out during a shift. Hawk runs in to the burning home to save “Baby” making out with only smoke inhalation. Snowball is on the scene for crowd control. Another residential fire get has hawk in the building with Joe; opens the door and becomes the victim. The burn unit at the hospital takes awesome care of her not just her ones but spiritually as well. Can snowball breakthrough hocks self depreciation. Period. Read to find out
This is another sweet Gold Coast Retrievers Book in the very good series. I enjoyed the characters of Nicole Hawkins (‘Hawk’), a firefighter, and Arnold Winters, a policeman, along with a Golden puppy named Chase, and the very special Olivia, Arnold’s jealous roommate.
The story is good and addresses the serious topic of burn victims and burn treatment units. My only issue was the plot development which seemed slow and at times would stop altogether. I received a free advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my honest review.
Nicole “Hawk” Hawkins is not just a another pretty face. She is a tough firefighter. While at a fire, which turns out to be no accudent, Hawk is hurt and severely scarred. She is in the hospital for a long time. Arnold "Snowball" Winters is a local detective who loves Hawk. He will do anything to protect her. But can he protect her when an arsonist turns his sights on Hawk? Can Hawk accept Snowball's love for her? Find out how Hawk, Snowball, with the help of Chance finds an arsonist and love. I received a copy of this book from the publisher and it in no way influenced my opinion.
What a great book about healing and self doubt. The characters were wonderful, forgiving Hawk of past grievances and reaching out to be her friend. Chance was so tuned in to Hawk and you can’t help but fall in love with this puppy. There is a bit of mystery which is always fun to try and figure out. Can be read as a stand alone or part of The Gold Coast Retrievers series’s. Was given a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Nicole “Hawk” and Arnold "Snowball" are so great together. Snowball is the best book boyfriend. Hawk made me want to hug her. Who is starting the fires? Why does it seems that Nicole is being targeted? Everyone needs a second chance and I'm glad Snowball liked/loved Hawk and encouraged others to give her one.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily providing my honest review. What woman would give up the life of a model to be a fire fighter? Hawk did, but then her face is burned and she feels like a monster, but the love of a Golden Retriever and a good man show her otherwise. I really enjoy these Gold Coast Retriever books and highly recommend them.
Nicole Hawkins has changed her notorious career as model to be a firefighter. But this will prove more dangerous than it seems. She gets injured in two fires and the police department is suspecting her as the arson. Can Arnold, Snowball, prove her innocent while keeping her safe and catching the perpetrator? Chance, a Labrador puppy with healthy issue will help her regain her confidence again.
Nicole "Hawk" Hawkins is a firefighter in the small town of Pelican Cove, South Carolina and she loves her job. But she was once a well-known model who graced the covers of many magazines. Nicole is determined to prove her looks don't define her. Then a suspicious fire nearly ends her life leaving her permanently scarred. Detective Arnold "Snowball" Winters is investigating a series of fires that were arson, and he's more determined than ever after one nearly kills Nicole whom he's loved since he first met her. Her scars don't matter to him and he's ready to prove it. He has help from a golden retriever puppy named Chance. Arnold and Nicole work together to track down an arsonist.
I really enjoyed this book which is second in the series. Becky Muth is among my favorite authors whether she's writing as Becky or RA Muth. This book was well-written with well-rounded characters and a fast-paced plot. I was drawn into the enthralling story and kept hooked from beginning to end. This was a captivating romantic suspense with intrigue and mystery. It captured small town life and showcased friendship, courage, trust, and the healing power of love. There was a fearless heroine, an unwavering hero, and who can forget the pup with a heart of a gold? This book was a must-read. I just picked it up and didn't even read the synopsis. I loved the book and highly recommend both book and series. You can read this one on its own, but reading the books in order gives you more of a connection with all the characters.
I did not like Nicole Hawkins. She made a brief and very unappealing appearance in a previous Gold Coast Retrievers story, and she left a bad taste behind. Becky Muth does a great job of trying to redeem her, even bringing in the prior couple to forgive and sort of awkwardly befriend her, but it didn’t work for me.
Her co-star in the romance, Arnold, seemed very flat. He was loads of fun in the previous book, and I was excited to see a story for him. I hate to say his pet stole the show (and it wasn’t even the dog co-star). In fact, the dog co-star is seen very little and there were times I wondered if this really fit in the series.
What I did like a lot was the positive message the book tried to convey regarding scarring and injuries. Nicole faces a lot of adversity after she almost dies in a fire and is horribly burned. The scenes of her dealing with the aftermath - while a bit quick - were heartwarming and allowed me to start disliking her a little bit less.
**I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book**
I’m glad I’ve discovered these series! I can’t wait to read other stories too. Chance captured my heart; he is adorable! “My brother Owen used to say, ‘When the past comes calling, don’t answer. It has nothing good to say and you’re not walking backwards.’” “Life is too short to wait for Happily Ever After to arrive on your terms. It’s when you least expect it, that it happens. When I met Dr. Gustafson, I didn’t plan on falling for each other. In fact, we both had strict personal policies against dating coworkers. There’s nothing more valuable than love, though, and when you find it, you have to hold on tight with both hands and never, ever let go. No matter what.” I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All opinions in this review are my own.
How could I go wrong? Lady firefighter, small town cop, wonderful dogs, lessons learned, and all wrapped up in a lovely HEA worthy of Guideposts magazine! As the only female in the department and a history as a former model, it seems that nobody takes her seriously until she risks it all to save a distraught homeowner's beloved while off duty and without turnout gear. It all comes together despite other arson attempts yet it ends well. Loved it! Jennifer Gilmour is the skilled voice artist who makes a good book even better.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Healing Hawk (Gold Coast Retrievers #8) was a great read by Becky Muth. Nicole “Hawk” has always known that everyone just thinks she’s a pretty face with no substance. She decides to become a firefighter to prove everyone wrong. Not long into her new job, a fire nearly takes her life. It does scar and disfigure her face. They know that it wasn’t an accident but they don’t know who it was. Arnold “Snowball” is a detective who has loved Nicole since he met her. I loved reading Hawk and Snowball’s journey and can’t wait to read more by Becky Muth.
Healing Hawk by Becky Muth pulled me in immediately. I love the Gold Coast Retriever Series and found the characters in this book to be just as compelling. Hawk was initially introduced to me in a previous book, and I hadn't liked her then. This book she was totally redeemed. I love it when an author takes a character and molds them into a better person. I really enjoyed the direction this book took with the firefighter calendar and therapy pets. This book is a great story full of endearing characters and is a clean listen.
Willow found herself without a daytime talk show. The executives instead moved her into a daytime matchmaking game show. But what really made this book shine, of course, is Buddy, a sweet golden retriever. Willow inserted him into the show by having him pick the perfect match for the contestants. The audience loved it! But there was one disgruntled contestant who was not too happy. For many weeks he sent threatening letters to the studio to harm Willow and Buddy. They opted to get Willow a bodyguard for 24/7. I loved the relationship that developed between her and her bodyguard.
When a firefighter is severely burned in an arson fire, she sinks into a deep depression and doesn't have much hope for the future until the love of an adorable misfit puppy, and a good man, gives her new hope. This is a typical romance/suspense story from the Gold Coast Retrievers series. The romance is sweet and wholesome, the villain commits an unforgivable crime for totally despicable reasons and then, of course, there are the Goldens. What's not to love?
I love all the books in the Gold Coast Retrievers series. Healing Hawk is an emotional story about a woman who is valued for her face and figure. She leaves modeling and becomes a firefighter resented by the men in the fire house. There is an unknown arsonist setting fires that twice nearly kill Hawk. With a love interest, a therapy dog, suspense and romance. this book kept me from all my chores until I reached the end!
I received an ARC for an honest review. This is my new favorite in this series! I read it in one afternoon since I didn't want to put it down! Nicole goes from feeling unloved to surrounded in love! A great story on so many levels, people change, things aren't what they seem, and beauty is more about the person inside. Great story, great messages. This is one I would re read!
I have read several of the books in this series. I love them. The Gold Coast Retrievers are wonderful. They remind everyone how valuable, they are as service dogs. I love the love story between, Nicole and Arnold. The characters are very loveable and I rooted for them. The plot is well developed. I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Healing Hawk: WOW! Fantastic story! Great writing and amazing characters. It was a very emotional story! I loved how Snowball stick to his hunches when it came to his work and his feelings. I loved all the animals throughout the story. Hawk was special. It had great challenges and surprises. I really enjoyed this story.
Each book has a mystery and a little clean romance. Highly recommend. Cute and smart dogs connect all the books in the series, but can be read separately.
What an engaging story, from a going on a run, to running into a burning house to rescue a baby! Nicole Hawkins is a new firefighter, but not everyone wants her in the firehouse.
