I must admit that I approached this book with a little trepidation. I am not exactly what you would describe as the best student of languages. I only managed to score pretty average passes for German when I was in school. When I started on the first story I was mortified by my limited recognition of the words and understanding of the story. But I followed the instructions, read the word list, and went through the story again. It starting making more sense by my third read through. This is not the sort of book that you read from cover to cover, and I expect that I will be dipping in and out of it over the next year.
The philosophy behind the book makes sense, and this (and the guides they have for other languages) will be a great took for any student wishing to improve their comprehension on the German language. It's worth the investment.
I received a free copy of this book through the LibraryThing Early Reviewer Group, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Lingo Mastery has embarked on a new mission – to make German more accessible to a wider population. In the Introductory Note the goal is stated well: ‘The German language is the official language in three different European countries: Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It belongs to the West Germanic of the Indo-European Language family. German is the native language of over 95 million people and is the 6th largest language with the most native speakers. It is on of the main cultural language of the western world…The German language as many different dialects depending on in which country or region you are in but in written form it looks very similar wherever your are. When it comes to actual speaking, there a lot of different dialects, some of which are nearly impossible for a foreigner. The most difficult dialects of German you will typically come across in Austria and Switzerland. So if you’re looking to go on a learning vacation, maybe try Germany first…We’ve compiled a series of tales which will each cover a particular tool of the language. Each story will tell a different tale involving unique, deep characters with their own personalities and conflicts, while ensuring that you understand the objective of the particular language device in German.’
Each of the twenty stories follows the pattern Summary of the story, Vocabulary Questions about the story, and Answers. Or as the authors state, ‘Each story will tell a different tale involving unique, deep characters with their own personalities and conflicts, while ensuring that you understand the objective of the particular language device in Italian. Verbs, Pronouns, Nouns, Directions, Time and Date; all of it will be covered in this Basic-level book for Beginners. At no point will we introduce concepts too difficult for you to grasp, and any complicated vocabulary will be studied at the end of each story.’
The stories vary, as do the lessons taught. This is a very fine introduction to German, appropriate for all age levels, and a book much needed at this time in our national status!
I have previously used the beginner French conversation from Lingo Mastery and found it to be a good product. With this German-language instruction, it is up to the same high standard, but the focus is obviously on stories with reading/listening comprehension.
In terms of organization, the story is presented in German. Then it is summarized in both German and English. The vocabulary is read aloud twice, once slow and then natural native speed. The end of each story has a set of comprehension questions.
The narrator's voice is of prime importance with helping language learning. He speaks very clearly, and the care he uses when enunciating the vocabulary is invaluable. The only complaint I have about the narrator is that his English is so good that on the very rare times he mispronounces something in English, it is very jarring. He had a few zingers in the first two stories, but it got better.
I didn't necessarily enjoy all the stories as pure entertainment, but they were appropriate to the learning level and stretched language abilities. Yes, a language learner could listen, but the best benefit will come from using both the audio and the PDF.
Recommended without reservation to beginning German learners.
Note: I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Appearance: This book was an eBook, but currently, you can order Paperback for $14.95 on Amazon.
Content: I Have studied the German(Deutsch) language for almost a year and a half, when I saw this ebook is available for a giveaway on LibraryThing I became so excited to receive and read it. Unfortunately, I had to contact the publisher, Lingo Mastery to get my copy.
as this title clears this book is for beginners and it’s a dictionary type of book which has examples of German and English for each letter.
There are some misspellings and the capitalization issues such as god instead of God. overall I recommend it to whoever is trying to learn the German language which is the international business language in the world.
There is also a German Short Stories for Beginners, which is good for whoever finished and mastered The 2000 Most Common Words in German. The Audiobook is also available on Amazon which will be a great help as the pronunciation of German words is not easy. This book has been written by a native German author and is recommended for A2+ level learners.
I’d like to thank Oscar and Lingo Mastery for providing me a copy of this book along in exchange for honest and unbiased feedback for the book. http://3ee.info/german-short-stories-...
"German Short Stories for Beginners" is a book of short stories in German. I feel the for beginners in the title may be caused me to feel over confident. If a person knew basic German already then maybe this would work. I can see how in a group setting with a knowledgeable person leading them, it could be successful. I attempted to read the first story and it was just painful. I didn't understand it nor did I want to take a test on it. The stories we're way to long for me, knowing no German. This is for a dedicated person who can self teach easily and is properly motivated to learn German. I received this book in exchange for my opinion and I give it 3 out of 5 stars. If you are willing to also Google and YouTube your way through this book then maybe it will work. It's more like be a detective to learn German.
This is a very useful book for when you're studying German. I'm studying it in school and I used this book as an exercise to read German texts. The stories are really fun. I liked that each story has different characters and also a different subject. Even the genre of the stories varied. At the end of each story you can find a wordlist with difficult words and a little quiz with multiple choice questions. With this you can see if you really understood the story. If not, there's always a little summary (in German and in English) to help. I would definitely recommend using this book as a companion to study the language. It's a very fun way to 'study'.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Clearly, reading in a second language isn’t as breezy or relaxing as reading in a first language; at least for those of us who are still very much learners at age 42. But I got through it!
These stories are somewhat bizarre, organized to teach families of words that are useful together. So, one story will be about apartment hunting, the next will be about workplace arguments, then about getting lost at sea and finding an enchanted island just before death consumes the protagonist. They work, and it’s all very helpful; however, the “Dino Learnt Deutsch” is a more fun and cohesive series.
These are basically beginning short stories for those wanting to be able to read German fluently. They're quite short, rather odd, but keep your interest. I would arrange the book slightly differently but it works.
I have heard of this learning technique before, but this is the first time I have tried it. It is very useful, especially for whom who are early B1. Reading comprehensible content is really effective to learn language. Good stories inside.
Die Geschichten sind manchmal verrückt, manchmal süß – aber immer spannend! Dank der vielen Fragen am Ende habe ich gelernt, ohne überhaupt zu merken, dass ich lerne. Mein Gehirn sagt: ✔️ Lernstoff. Mein Herz sagt: 💖 mehr Geschichten!
This is a great book of short stories that has helped to expand my German vocabulary and allows me to feel that I am making progress with this language.
Nice book. I suppose this is not about great characters or interesting plots, but I had preferred nicer stories. Anyway, there are very useful exercises and helpful vocabulary. A nice book for improving my german.
Maybe I wouldn't call the stories "captivating", but this book has been very useful to get some practice and I would recommend it. It's appropriate for people that are at the end of the A2 level.
I liked this book. I think it helps in many ways, especially in expanding your vocabulary. There was a couple of stories that were challenging but overall it's very helpful in the language-learning process.
