The Guy Gets Teddy

Rate this book
Life is hard for everyone. But if you throw in religious parents, the death of a brother, and a desire to act, sing, and dance--when you don't look the way everyone expects (or wants)--it can be particularly difficult. This is the story of Baxley Theodore Miller--Teddy. He acts, he sings, he tries to dance (he's working on it), he's gay, he's overweight, his parents are religious, and the one person who loved him just as he is has died. That doesn't mean that life stops moving. Teddy wants to follow his dreams...and maybe find love along the way. Why can't a gay, overweight kid have it all? Teddy finds himself in experimental performing arts LGBTQ+ summer camp after his senior year of high school. There he will find out what he is truly made of--and maybe make a few friends along the way. But when a handsome, friendly, kind boy starts to show interest, Teddy realizes that maybe he's never understood love at all. With the help of his Rufus, an enthusiastic asexual boy, and Chastity, a lesbian who is a lot kinder than she seems, Teddy realizes that maybe he has to change his way of thinking before he can change the world. Love doesn't just find you, you have to decide to find love, and it all starts with loving yourself.

Chase Connor spends his days writing about the people who live (loudly and rent-free) in his head when he’s not busy being enthusiastic about naps and Pad Thai. Chase started his writing career as a confused gay teen looking for an escape from reality. Ten years later, one of the books he wrote during those years, Just A Dumb Surfer Dude: A Gay Coming-of-Age Tale, was published independently. Chase has numerous projects in various stages of completion lined up for publishing. Chase is a multi-genre author, but always with a healthy dollop of gay.

Oh, Teddy. My sweet, sweet Teddy. I want to squish him in a giant hug. And maybe Connor too for writing such a hilarious, poignant story.

But I also want to shake Connor and ask him WHY, FOR THE LOVE OF JEEBUS, DID YOU HAVE TO TEAR ME APART IN THE FIRST CHAPTER????

I digress...

I loved the concept of Camp Diversity and the unique way campers were sorted into cabins (by sexuality) to prevent any shenanigans. This process wasn't fool-proof as the reader learns.

Teddy's cabinmates were an absolute pleasure and added just the right balance to Teddy and Travis.

There's Rufus, the joyful, friendly asexual:

"I mean, sexual fantasies are awesome...but contemplating actually having sex is just not that appealing."

Chastity, the snarky, cynical (but caring underneath all that superficial barbed wire) bff:

"I'm allergic to happiness, not fun."

And then there's Travis, the unexpected (at least to Teddy) love interest.

He was hot. He was gay. He couldn't see me eating a candy bar.

I was overjoyed when Teddy finally saw his worth and let himself just be with Travis.

He was a hot guy and I was...Teddy.

Oh, but Teddy, that's what makes you perfect.

Of course, Connor had to tear me apart again with one of the most perfect, tender lines I've ever read:

He was beautiful in the ways that mattered.

So are you, Teddy.

I. Loved. This. Book! If I was ever going to sit down and hug a book after reading it, this would be the one. It's the perfect funny, feel good book -- but not in a too fluffy or obnoxious way.

I picked the right time of year to read it, since it takes place at a summer camp. The author described it all so perfectly. I felt like I was right there...feeling the mosquitos buzzing around, rolling my eyes at the cheesy camp counselors, and sneaking out at night to see my summer crush by the lake.

So the story is about Teddy, who goes to a LGBTQ+ performing arts summer camp. He meets new friends... and maybe...possibly a new love? It's charming and hilarious, yet also very emotional at times.

It's also about the labels we put on people, and the courage it takes to look past those to see the real person. It's about friendship, acceptance, and love.

"A lot of things make life worthwhile, but true friendship is at the very top of the list of things."

Needless to say, reading this story was incredibly nostalgic for me. It brought so many feelings right to the surface, and I enjoyed every second of it.

Take a chance on this one. You will be SO happy you did. I'm sure of it.

Lovely short read

Packs a lot of experiences with prejudice/privilege into a super sweet short story about growing up and accepting you are worthy of love, no matter who you are.
