Dead Man's Tide

Rate this book
Viridian Gate Online is more than just a game… and now, it's Alan Campbell’s whole world.

Recently deceased and squishy as hell, Alan, a newly minted Illusionist, is forced to flee for his life. He needs time to deal with his loss, both in-game and IRL, but first he’ll have to escape his crazy ex, the treacherous Firebrand, Thalia Daceran.

On his way to safety and revenge, he’ll team up with Titus, the Imperial spymaster, as well as a crew of pirates, commandos, and even a shapeshifting Mimic with a taste for blood. His path leads to Wyrdtide, a gaslit city hidden in mists and governed by dark demigods.

But even with Alan dead, the world marches on. Will the government seize control of V.G.O.? Did Horace, the blind beggar, really die? And whatever happened to Jeff? Find answers, new purpose, and the machinations of the gods in this action-packed continuation of the Illusionist Series.

From James A. Hunter—author of Viridian Gate Online, Rogue Dungeon, War God's Mantle, and the Yancy Lazarus Series—and D.J. Bodden, author of The Black Year Series, comes an epic new entry into the Expanded Universe of Viridian Gate Online that you won't want to put down!

Out of all the VGO arcs, I think that this is my favourite to date. I find Alan a relatable character as he struggles to adapt to his circumstances. This, combined with the complexity of the IRL situation and the machinations of the AI Overminds has a certain alchemy that I find some of the other satellite VGO books lack. This is not to say that the other books are bad, but I very much want to see where The Illusionist series goes as it doesn't have the feel of a "sidequest" like many of them do. It may just be me, but the whole sidequest book thing never holds for me the same interest as the main sequence books. As this is more of a prequel it stands on its own.

Also, if the author reads this, I'd like to see more Nils, probably my favourite character in this book. That's mainly because Alan makes a good "straight-man" to it and I can see them as an adventuring team, at least outside the cities. The amoral "monster" who still appreciates friendship and loyalty is an interesting idea that I think can be developed in an entertaining fashion.

Excellent

My only complaint would be the revolving door of supporting characters. If love to read more with Nik and Gnasher

The story continues to entertain me, although the way that Talia (the firebrand, however her name is spelled) is both portrayed and treated by the narrative, really makes me uncomfortable and I suspect I'm going to be unhappy if/when she's brought back into the main storyline. Alan's an okay protagonist but I find myself more engaged with his companions than with him himself.

Actually I'm thinking back and I'm having trouble pointing to literally ANY female character who isn't either fridged or portrayed in this book as psycho or two-faced in some way. That's... concerning... Will probably read the next one but if the female characters continue to be mistreated and mishandled I might have to walk away from this series.

I wanted more from the irl side of the story and didn't have a real reason to care about most of the characters in this book. This part of the story was missing the interaction of those two worlds. There were irl segments, but that was not as much of a focus as in the first book.

There is level progression but I felt the joy of discovery was missing. As far as female characters, the book was written by a guy for guys, but not quite as blatantly as some are.

I've read the first book in the main series and these two. I am having a hard time with the overminds. Sophia doesn't even seem like the same character. Maybe if I had read more of the main storyline, it would feel more consistent.

Book two is propelled, in part, by the VERY flimsy notion of Alan's "ex" (extra emphasis on this) wants to kill him. She does indeed want him dead but book one didn't do a good enough job cementing the emotions to be an "ex", more I met her one time. Overall it was a big departure from the main VGO series, Alan isn't particularly entertaining. He runs 90% of the time and continuously levels up the same abilities. Also there was quite a bit of bizarre sexual tension between Alan and basically anyone he talks to, including his shapeshifting monster friend Nil...

A nice addition to the series even though I wish we had the main story books coming out as fast as these prequels. But still a good solid read and the audio book was well done also.

Yikes. The second part of Alan's adventures into the Viridian Gate Online world turns dark very quickly. A lot of things about it left me feeling confused and uncomfortable. It just really wasn't what I'd expected.

For a start, Alan, whom I'd assumed was pretty much a nice, normal (if still prone to gaming in his pants at the grand old age of 32 sort of way) guy, goes from newbie to kill-spree very early on. It's not the usual flailing or regretful actions of someone put into a fully immersive simulation either; he's brutal in how he sneakily deals death. Honestly, I was freaked out by how he suddenly seemed more psychopathic than empathetic here. His character seemed to flip between this freaky killer and the guy who's happier running away. I felt like I didn't get his attitude or actions. His beef with his "ex" Thalia (because one "date" = girlfriend?) was pretty troubling. It explained from her POV why she was doing what she did (in a "ladies be crazy" kind of way which was kind of disappointing ), but Alan never stops to even try and find out why she's after him. He just decided to murder her right back. That's... pretty freaky behaviour. Then there's how sexualized almost every encounter seemed to be. Every female (and one non-gendered character) suddenly wants to fling themselves at Alan. He likes checking them out. Again, pretty discomforting.

The confusion came from the many POVs scattered around, quite a few of which I didn't understand why they were doing what they did. I came to quite like Nils in the end, and really wanted to know more about what happened to Jeff, but felt like I was missing a lot of information on the reasons why characters were doing the things they did. Things like needling soldiers about their "real" identities even though it's made out to be obvious, characters running off the sea even though they were supposed to be guarding someone left behind, and slow to be revealed secrets. I assume others related to the main VGO series, which I haven't read. The machinations of the Overminds, the bits of world lore that weren't fully explained, the relevance of characters... I was lost when it came to how they fitted together. Other asides seemed unrelated to the action at the point they appeared in the narrative, so it could feel a lot more fractured and stop-start than the pacing of book one.

Not to be a total downer; there are some good little in-jokes (the anecdote about the lady dwarf's beard for instance) and character stories going on. The writing is easy to read, and there's clearly a lot going on.

Personally, I'm pretty upset by how uncomfortable this one made me. As much as I'm curious about the VGO universe (and Jeff; he's still nice, right?), I'm not sure I'd want to read more of scary Alan.

Picks up right where last book left off

Thalia and a group of her assassins pursuing Alan after he escaped the city. He meets up with Provus at a pre-agreed upon location (private messages are handy for that kind of thing), and together they run. While on the run, Alan is learning to use his first Illusionist spells in real time.

Nil the Mimic is assigned by his overwind to protect Alan, so he shows up and helps protect and guide Alan, incidentally helping save Provus along the way.

This gets very dark, very quickly. Thalia gets horribly scarred during the fighting, and turns to horrible deals and doing ugly things in hopes of exacting her perceived revenge on Alan. The group travels overland to a strange and ugly place, eternally is mist and shadow, Wyrdtide, where most people are mutants, outcasts, criminals, or worse. During their travels the group meets up with Titus and a group of guards sent to keep Provus safe. Provus is severely wounded from the fight with the assassins, and its touch and go.

Throughout there are cutaways to various Overminds discussing things and speculating on outcomes. Reducing our “hero” to little more than a contested chess piece.

This book is saved in the later half, when Alan, Titus, Nil, and some of the Janissaries are at a bar when Thalia walks in. Thalia is hunting a ship captain for the Drowned man, who is an aspect of one of the gods. However, Alan assumes she is there to pursue her vendetta against him, and indeed as soon as she sees him she wants to. Alan and crew end up befriending a Dwarven pirate captain, Mad Marge, and they take turns saving each other as they escape from Thalia, and leave on Mad Marge’s ship.

Alan saves Mad Marge from a debt collector who brings his ship to bear on her smaller ship, and captures them all. Alan is growing in his power and creativity in using his illusionist powers.

Finally, the team has to split up, Titus returning to home base, Alan and Nil continue to their known destination to find and kill Thalia. Which they manage to do, after Alan first makes his way through dozens of assassins and other threats using his illusionist powers to appear like friends until he gets a chance to backstab someone, spread false orders, and otherwise sow mayhem.

Killer way to continue the Alan Campbell story

This is the second installment in the Alan Campbell series in the VGO Universe Expansion

This was a fantastically written story. I love how well Alan develops on this story, with believing more in himself but also learning to rely on others as well.

The ancillary characters in this portion of the series are expanded upon also and an stunningly well done job of it. Everyone seems so full of life and you get sucked right into the action of the moment. Each character seems to be full of life and you can feel the time, caring and amount of craft that was put into the world building and development of everything.

This story focuses more strictly on Alan's adventures this time and his struggles. It doesnt disappoint either ti lead you down a crazy road of fun, exhilarating twists and turns. At some points I was even shouting out loud because I was so pumped up or I just couldn't believe what had just happened but for you to find those point out you'll have to buy the book.

Provous, Casius, Nim and a few characters others make a return and play a role in making Alan into the man who he is turn into be.

I also enjoyed the IRL parts of the story, it really humanizes Osmark to a point that we dont get from any of the other stories still. There is some big twists in the IRL side of the story to that will have lasting consequences.

Without a doubt I recommended buying this book and have to say DJ is a stealer Author that is on the rise. I can't wait to see the 3rd installment of this series and to see what else he writes.

Alan Campbell never imagined just how much his life would change upon setting foot inside Viridian Gate Online. His only intention had been to show its creator that the game has promise. That it wasn't a mere fluke. With death, he'd achieved that feat, never once taking into account the fact that he was now immortalized forever inside the game itself. If he's to succeed in surviving such a cruel and unexpected world, he'll have to learn everything possible with every passing second. Only then will he be able to prove himself to the game gods and Osmark himself.

I love, love, love this game world James and the authors he works with have created. They've given us such diverse characters, each intent on expanding upon the world of Elgard. These are characters with unique beginnings. Characters that find themselves on unequal footing. Each, however, is determined to survive, no matter the cost.

From the moment I was introduced to Alan's part in this eclectic world, I was hooked. The author has this knack of showing us the world Alan inhabits through every step he takes. Not only that, he also broadens each aspect of this diverse world with each of the unique characters that are introduced as the story goes on.

If you haven't given the VGO series a chance, you definitely should. This is a game world where anything is possible. I so can't wait to see what the author has in store for us next.

More, please!

I must admit it took me a while to get into this book and I did not find it as exciting as the rest of the VGO series. Alan Campbell is in trouble, his ex Thalia Duceran also known as Firebrand and her group of Sicarii are hunting him down. She is working for the drowned man. Alan on the other hand is being protected by Titus, Nil and Gnasher and they end up in Wyrtide, the gas lit city of ill repute. During a massive skirmish they flee for their lives with Mad Marge also known as the bearded captain of the precious pearl who takes her ship out to sea on the dead man's tide and saves their butts. Alan's quest is to kill Thalia and vice versa. The Overminds seem to still be playing their usual games and using the players as their pawns. I loved the characters of Nil and Gnasher and Mad Marge most, they brought a bit of humour into the story.

Amazing read

Frankly speaking, I’ve come to enjoy the different point of views and perspectives provided by the Viridian Gate Online side stories, I feel that Nomad and Deadman’s Tide provide a nice precursor to show some of the issues faced by Robert Osmark prior to the start of the series. I also enjoy how the Overminds are being further personified and showcased because it adds depth and intricacy to their existence, I am still very curious about the many aspects we’ve yet to encounter. I also pray that we will eventually get side stories for Jeff and Cassandra and perhaps even get see more of Ivan. All and all, the VGO series is quite concrete.

This is the second book in this branch of the series and it probably creates more questions than it answers, in a good way. Less satisfying from a gamer perspective, this look into the world is more satisfying from a fantasy point of view: we understand less of how the game works in the world but more of how we work in the game world...once "we" are forced to accept that world as reality.

Regardless, I was left, once again, wanting more about this world and this story.

Love watching this early character development

The MC is pretty interesting. The way that he uses his newfound abilities is pretty inventive. But I guess that makes sense for why he got them now doesn’t it. Since it’s supposed to be tailored to him and his personality.

Nil is kinda different, great but different. Loved that trap scene on the boat. A personal series for Nil sounds pretty cool.

Can’t wait for the next books.

Better than book one in the series.

The writing was better than the first book in most ways, but the wording was still a little confusing at times. The story was great though and I really enjoyed the fact that it's a good book I can recommend to my teen kids.

I also really liked the fact that there were no overt political views in the book being rammed down my throat.

I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

VGO must read

Alan has survived and now finds that he has hunted but as the over minds play their games with the oives of their charges its Alan who finds himself in the forefront and soons finds their is more to gaming that he thought as it's now his survival hes fighting for. Alan has turned out to be a great character and the supporting cast I'd great especially Nil.

Excellent character development and storyline

I have enjoyed every VGO story i have read, but this series is one of my favorites with characters i enjoy (especially the evil ones). The story works well on all the levels it incorporates, including the gods. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Didn't really expect this sequel to go in quite the direction it did, but it was a satisfying conclusion (of sorts) all the same. I definitely will read more by this author, and I'm intrigued enough about the concept itself to maybe check out a few more of the Kindle recommendations I've got since buying this book.

Just keep reading

I don’t know what it is with these series, but I find them hard to put down. This time we have Alan growing in his new role inside the game. And I wonder what happens to him in book 3. And I’m a little curious if there will be future VGO stories with the characters introduced in these side stories.

Interesting but convoluted

The story is watered down it has not one or two people to focus on but at least 5 different splits in the book up going from perspective to another in the different characters and make the actual content very lacking... Btw the mimic should probably be referred as they not an it as it's a more proper term for a non binary person ...

Good side story continuation

Good story, sort of a pre-VGO story. But, still worth it. Oddly enough, you'll end up caring more about the side characters than the main character. Which, isn't a bad thing.

This one just wasn’t for me. Way too verbose and pedantic. Sometimes felt like I was reading the Silmarillion again, sounding like a bible full of names that are impossible to remember and completely uninteresting.

Still Loving the Series

It’s a really good series and true to the RPGlit genre. I think if you like fantasy, rpgs, and the two things combined into an epic novel....then dive into VGO today. It’s worth the time you dedicate to reading it.

Great rhythm and tone

Loved the book, the characters and story for neatly together. The mentality of Alan was nice to see how it changed and accepted who he was becoming. The end twist with Thalia was great too!

Love VGO and I love how different the Illusionist series is! It's the only one with multiple view points, a definite departure from the others, but it works for this story line.
