I’ve gotten myself into one last incident. One final mistake that may cost me everything, including my life.
By using dark, manipulating magic the Solstice Queen wants to reign over the two Kingdoms and give power back to mages once and for all. I’ll stand by her side. I’ll smile and wave and say all the right things.
All while turning the last remaining mages against her. Because when it all ends, the beloved Solstice Queen won’t walk away from the war she started.
Unless I die trying.
This is a Reverse Harem series containing M/M themes. Recommended for readers 18 and over.
This is the final book in the To Tame a Shifter Series.
A.K. Koonce is a USA Today best selling author. She's a mom by day and a fantasy and paranormal romance author by night. She keeps the fantastical stories in her mind on an endless loop, while she tries her best to focus on her actual life and not that of the spectacular but demanding fictional characters who always fill her thoughts
This is a fun, fast-paced fantasy romance featuring dragons and a heroine who has survival instincts cranked up to EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF
“It’s a little cowardly on our part, but I’m honestly prepared to shove her right off a cliff if that’s the option we have.”
But....
The unique heroine's backstory never came back into play. bummer
The reverse harem was hella PG and barely started getting really fun in the last two books. goddamnit
I don't remember enough of the individual book plots cuz that they weren't strong enough to stand by themselves i dunno
Overall, it was this constant back and forth of me wanting more. And never getting it. I liked the idea of the heroine having a background in training magical creatures. I hated that it was just an excuse to meet the love interests. I loved how goddamn morally grey each of these characters was in their own unique hilarious way. I hated that the plot did not challenge them enough to really show off their abilities. See what I mean?
This likely won't ever be a re-read but it was enjoyable. Just honest to god, looking back I wished that the plot was more intense and planned throughout the five books and that it was sexier as one expects for a reverse harem *shrugs*
We FINALLY have a fucking ending. For a second I was terrified there would be another book. Seriously this could have been a 4-booker.
Aside from a certain Abcurse brothers being #1, this series goes down as Second Favorite Harem Names in the RH world.
Book 1: F I R E. Book 2: can’t remember but not as good Book 3: confusion Book 4: better, thank the heavens, end sucked balls Book 5: so sweet.
Literally. She described everything as “sweet”
Which doesn’t bother me because, well, HAE. (Oops, spoilssss)
Yaaaaaaay. (Insert comment on predictability but still happy anyway)
The bad: the battle was seriously lacking. Not enough harem time, if you get what I mean. C’MON AUTHORS. WE NEED THAT SHIT IN ALL INSTALLMENTS. Overall, the series was on a slow downward descend.
I still liked it. I did.
Arrow was... well, Arlow. The men: ugh. All of them, miiiiiiiine. Rime still wins the award for HOTTEST HAREM MAN in the harem universe (I forgot what I titled this award in my last reviews. All I know is he is all of the awards worth)
It had its highs and flats. The ending was good. Also, good as always is the chemistry and banter. I just felt like some good moments we rushed, making them lacklustre. Like Kane and Arlows first time, or the final death blow on the evil queen... or Aggies return could have done with more antics. Oh, and a finial bow out from Bobbles 🐡 ( l miss that anxiety ridden fish). Then again, there were many highs, like the feral Rimmes and Arlow ranting to him about BJs. The floppy Cocks moment! The evil queen chastising Arlow "Don't choke with your mouth open! It's a sign of weakness. " And the many funny banter and teasing moments...oh and the smut! Well, there is less, but they were being held captive and in dragon mind prison most of the time. But I could have done more MM action and sadly...no MMFMM menage.
I'm not sure what I was expecting for the final book, but I just found the great/good moments didn't outweigh the flat moments. HEA ending was nice, though
I love these books and already they have made it to one of my top favorite series list this year. But. This last book was a bit disappointing and rushed. Then it just ends after everything was said and done.
I wanted a bit more. Especially with it being the last book and all.
This was a pretty good series. I really do love the idea of dragon shifters.
The ending was super sweet, but I would have liked just a bit more. I always want more happy-happy, so that could just be me.
The covers for this series are just freaking fantastic!
Possibly spoilery? A lot of books with Wars in them all seem to focus heavily on each side trying to kill the main leader on the other side. My question is: why? Even after you kill the leader, the soldiers fighting don't know that. They'll just keep fighting. The war isn't over. But all of the books I read seem to build up to a climax of war and then never really "clean things up" beyond the death of the main bad guy. But I will admit that I totally overthink. It's possibly strange that I'm looking for more realism in a book with dragon shifters.
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Koonce has done a fabulous job of wrapping up this incredible series!! Arlow and her guys have really come along way which really shows as this book progresses. It truly takes the power of love to overcome the evil Queen though kicking some butt never hurts either. I was totally blown away as the story progressed and about in tears due to the sweetness by the epilogue. If you have been hooked since book one like me then of course you have to read this and if you haven't started yet why not??? Total must read finale!! I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
Well, that was a bit underwhelming. Everything happened so fast and the ending was kinda sucky for me but i’m still happy i read this Series cause i enjoyed being in Arlow’s mind although she did annoy me at times and reminds me alot of a certain Pink haired cupid. Glad they’ve included Sin finally.
What a perfectly sweet conclusion to a truly great series!
It was painful to see Rime not recognize Low in the beginning of the book; however, it was comforting to know his dragon was still protective of her and recognized his mate. “You missed the way I said I loved you, Rime. Several times. All you ever asked me was to never tell you how much I loved you. And once again, I didn’t listen. I love you so much that I didn’t even realize how much love I had until you were gone.“
So when Ellise brought the men by magic and then subjected them to the same fate as Rime, I was ready to throw fists. Furious. What a psychotic bitch. Good thing Sin is a powerful and devious mf and wasn’t ensnared by her shit.
The way the queen’s “spell” was broken… woo that was absolutely steamy; including a delicious moment with Kain, followed by some REAL sexy times between him and Arlow! FREAKING FINALLY! “Kain, I hate that our relationship started with lies. I hate that I never paused to really be with you. And I hate that you loved me anyway. I love you, Kain”
I couldn’t get enough of his alpha protective nature and wanted more of him. I was thoroughly disappointed with the fact that out of 5 books, we only got one quick sex scene with Kain; and it was with Sinister, he didn’t even get to experience that alone with her for the first time? Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the slow-burn aspect of their relationship and that their sexual tension was draw out, but seriously?! After that first time, he should have been thrown into a few orgies at least!! Poor guy, got the short end of the sexy stick. Let’s be real, the other 3 men got WAY more action; it was heavily unbalanced in that regard and this really irks me.
Also the way the other men were brought out of their trance was heart-warming as hell. Especially when Rime helps to bring Chaos back to his mind by confessing his feelings, ugh cue sobbing. “His fingers catch Chaos’ jaw, and he drags his attention right back to him. “I love you. Don’t brush off my affection just because I’m shit at giving it.”” Their opposite personalities make them even cuter together.
Let me just say that my favourite character of ALL was Aggie. ”I’m coming, Low. The weather here is incredibly insulting. But tell that bitch queen of ours I’m coming”
That blind old bat made this book! She loves Low like her own granddaughter, she’s bitter and snarky, plus has a sexually deviant side. My fucking spirit animal. “I gasp with a smile the moment I see her. She’s frail but fierce. Aging but agile. This little old woman is the fucking storm. “I brought friends,” Agatha says, a big smile creasing her already lined face.” Literally such a bad bitch. YES Aggie, get it!
The Solstice Queen is taken out easily once Low’s reinforcements of Mages and the Minden army arrive. She never stood a chance, it was almost too easy but hey, I wasn’t really in this for the plot anyways! Not to say it wasn’t good, it just wasn’t super complex; I was looking for a steamy romance more than anything and this series completely fulfilled my need for that!
The mating ceremony making up the epilogue was bawl-worthy. Everything each of them said, to the inclusion of Sin, was absolute perfection and had me furiously wiping my leaking face. Starting with our darling but savage dragon, Chaos ”I promise to always take care of you, to know what you need. Even if you never do”
Then onto Rime, the sexy ice dragon who keeps his thoughts to himself most of the time. “”I promise to love all the terrible parts of you”…, “I promise to love all the bad as much as the good because your bad parts are just like mine. We’re the same,””
Next up was daddy alpha Kain, the protector of the pack, the leader of the group, and the man who always puts his loved ones before himself, ”I promise to take care of you. To give you everything you deserve in life. This house, this house is nothing compared to all the things I want to give you, Arlow” Also thank GOD she was able to restore his shifting ability with his dragon, I would have been devastated if he was left to live without his beast.
Finally, our boy Sin, the absolutely delectable and cheeky demon who would quite literally give his life for Low.. ”I promise to always wait for you, Arrie. I promise to make up for the time I missed with you. I promise to make up for all that time I couldn’t love you. I promise to always be your friend. Your lover. Your mate”
At this point I’m a fucking MESS. And they built her a god damn house with a yellow door, what a beautiful touch. The ending of this book wrapped up the story in a nice little bow and gave us a such a wonderful happy ending!
The only thing that I believe would have added some tension and complexity to this book would have been a multiple POV; I would have really loved to get a glimpse into their heads, especially when Low was alone with Rime in the castle and the other guys were left behind.
Overall this book was a lovely end to a quick but captivating series that I’m so glad I picked up! Koonce is reliably fantastic and I am quickly on my way to reading all her material, I’m literally obsessed!
~4.5 stars~

Yay! I loved it! I'm even a little choked up right now, after that lovely ending. I'm going to miss Arlow, Sin, Kain, Chaos, and Rime... very entertaining and suspenseful series with tons of chemistry and lots of snark.
It was just a fun little series. I am so used to reading multiples povs that it throw me a little throughout the whole series. But it was still just as fun. I think the author really could expand it and write more pages. As the average amount of pages was like 180?
Honestly I’m just a bit disappointed. So while this series was great with creating wonderful characters and a cool concept… with each book, either nothing happened, or it all happened quickly and then just moves on. The series felt more like a planning draft than a final product.
This book was everything I could have possibly wanted for ending for this series. I was frustrated at first with how the queen had entrapped Arlow’s mates but i knew their love would prevail. The battle was epic and I knew Arlow and her friends would come through victorious. The epilogue was just the last glimpse of Arlow and her mates that I needed! Thank you for writing this series!
Now this is how you end a series! You know what, this book is most definitely the second best of this series! But, keep in mind just because it’s the second best doesn’t mean it lacks a thing! Both number one & two are equally good, excellent plots, excellent smut scenes. I’m very proud of how this book was wrote, this entire series!
🐲🀄️ First book on the list goes to - Claiming Second book goes to - Reigning Third book goes to - Maiming Fifth book goes to - Taming 🐲🀄️
Rime x Arlow This book most definitely brung rime & low more closer. We see them bonding much more & lots of angst in the mix, which I felt reading this book. I’m glad everything turned out okay in the end! I love how possessive they were about each other, we see more of that in low more.
Kain x Arlow It pissed me off when he lost his dragon, a big part of hisself but I’m so happy, Arlow gave him back that one big part of himself. Everyone has softened up & it’s an adorable relationship, it’s a flawless chemistry between these two, I adore them!
Chaos x Arlow He is so clingy, I love it. Especially, in the last book before this one! I can’t! His & rime relationship sparked something inside me. I really liked the moment they had & ugh I envy it.
Sin x Arlow He just fits. He fits in with this mating bond & im so glad he was included in that last scene, bonding moment. Arlow cares so much about this, it’s adorable! This is a very healthy relationship & so is the others.

For some reason I didnt 100% love this last book in AK’s dragon shifter RH series. It was good but if fell short for me because some things felt rushed or not explained well. The cadence of the previous 4 books were great but this one didnt match them, if that makes sense.
Now let’s talk about the story without giving too much away! It was gut wrenching what the Solstice Queen did to some of the characters, how she distanced them from Arlow even more while they were in her clutches. Rime’s predicament totally made me get all emotional and made the reunion that much more sweeter (definitely a weight lifting off my chest once the connections were re-established!). I thought the battle scene at the end was good, happy to see the coming together with the various characters to defeat the evil. I also loved the epilogue with seeing some of the side characters having a hint of a happy ending too ❤️
In terms of narration, the emotions in this one was done really well, I was gutted listening to Arlow describe what was going on with her dragons, how she couldn’t connect with them, her anguish seeing that and feeling helpless. Good job!
Good ending to this series (I have to say these covers are amazing!!!). If you are looking for an RH series, esp with dragon shifters and some humor along with a good plot, definitely pick up this series by AK Koonce.
While I'm always into the crazy/demented characters this one really didn't work out for me. Arlow was brilliant in book #1 and I could have gotten behind her story, but as she connects with her mates she devolves as a character and from fierce and independent she becomes this sniveling little witch that she's full of doubt and continuously daydreams about sex and orgies. Don't get me wrong, I love the sex and the orgies, if only it actually happened in the pages instead of some abstract idea that the heroine might have had in her brain and we've only seen some glimpses of it, only for our imagination to whittle down cause of course, she goes and opens her mouth and everything goes to shit. Additionally, given that this is fantasy and we're talking about two kingdoms, it really clash to dress people in jeans? and a suit? like wtf? Or refer to "karma is a bitch", which I'm pretty sure a lot of fantasy heroines have this colloquialism in their repertoire. Did I like this series? Meh, not really, but maybe I am not the appropriate audience for it. Will I read anything else from the author? I don't know. For now doubtful.
I cannot say how much I love this series. I love Arlow’s snarkiness and sass. She is such a strong FMC. I love how the guys have such different personalities. Rime is stand-offish and cold but to Arlow that changes. Chaos is a fun loving guy and the heat between Chaos and Rime, WOW! Kain is the dominant alpha that is easily exasperated with Arlow. Sinister is the best friend turned crush to lover, he is a great guy and madly in love with Arlow. Elisse the crazies Mage Queen turns all of it upside down with her device to turn off the human side of the Shifters. Arlow has to find a way to save her mates and herself. What an epic battle and fantastic ending for these characters. Can’t wait to see what this author does next!
This review sort of covers the whole series rather than each book, as I read all of them after the series had been completed.
Oh I loved this series, the characters were probably my favourite. They all complimented each other so well, that I can’t even pick a favourite from the four. Arlow has a great sense of humour, and is a strong female heroine but with flaws that are relatable to the reader. I struggled to put the series down! I would have liked to have more intimacy and ‘harem time’ with Arlow and her mates. The series had a lot going on which was great, it wasn’t just a romance so that made it more interesting to follow! The last book seemed to be lacking a little, and after the build up seemed to all end quite quickly. But overall still a really good series to read!
Satisfying ending I can’t really complain! Normally I hate when a series has to much epilogue but I was looking forward to seeing what everyday mundane life was going to be like after they beat the solstice queen. The mating ceremony was sweet and made me tear up! I really enjoyed getting to know all of the characters and seeing how the plot played out. Kinda felt like there should have been a little bit more at the end to tie up some of the loose ends but I’m not really keeping score.
Glad the the solstice bitch got what she deserved! I thought it was interesting that Arlow wasn’t even the one to kill her, in fact she failed pretty spectacularly lol
Signed up for a fast paced romantasy and that’s exactly what I got, I’m sad to tell this series goodbye!

An okay ending to the series, but I feel like there was too much going on for such a short book (paperback 175 pages). There are more mages than we are previously lead to believe, the final battle feels rushed and Kain gets shortchanged again in this book. He’s a complete afterthought in this series so why even have him? I assumed something about Creedence would resurface because that entire plot line felt too simple and convenient, but it didn’t. Don’t get me started on Sinister, the most interesting character in the entire series! He get so little love an attention that I kinda began resenting Arlow. Rating: 3.5.

What a superb way to end this sensational series. I have loved this series from book 1. Rime has always been my favorite and then later Sinister. I love Choas and Kain too but Rime and Sinister are my favs. Arlow takes charge in this final book and her strength to save those she loves and others is amazing. Fabulously written with amazing characters and an awesome story. I'm sad to see it all come to an end but all good things and all that. One of my favorite series and definitely on my reread list for the future!
No spoilers of any kind included! This book was fantastic! I absolutely loved this book heck I loved the whole series. There’s so many surprises hidden within this story that I actually felt like I was sitting inside a huge whirlwind. But I’m kinda sad that this series has come to a close because it was awesome! But anyway yes I definitely do recommend this book but if you haven’t read the the first four books before this one then I highly suggest that you do that way you don’t get confused with what’s happening and who’s who.
I have been hooked since book 1 and am so very sad this is the last one. But.....the end is beautiful and perfect and just amazing. I love how far all of the characters have grown, individualy and together. There perfect imperfections compliment each other so well. They were all made for each other and I am so happy that they all finally saw that they were each worth it. Thank you so much for sharing Arlow, Chaos,Rime ,Kian, and Sinister with me and everyone who is smart enough to pick up this series. This will forever be my favorite of all time!
Love this series. Has a lot of humor in it that made me seriously laugh. If Iam in a awful mood just read to arklow and rime banter is enough to make you spill your coffee. These are my top favorite shifters. Character are well developed and each personality stands out. They don’t just start off in love with her. They give her a rough freakin time and she does the same to them. All of them are damaged and not perfect princes like some books. Lol now Iam curious once they have kids how in the world would that work??
I’ve made a breakthrough. Kind of. I mean, the beast isn’t trying to kill me, so that’s a start. And really, I got a dragon to snuggle me without fucking him. I am the ultimate beast tamer. Someone get my Most Valuable Tamer award ordered.
This was an amazing series! Each book ended, leaving me wanting more. What a battle these five faced! Kingdoms divided becoming as one once again. A true ruler sitting on the throne. Mages rising, to be seen once again. And finally, the happy ending Arlow, Kain, Chaos, Rime and Sin deserve.
DNF 57% I ABSOLUTELY loved this series however this book felt rushed, flat and hard to grasp. I know! I'm crying too! At the start of the book, it dives right back into the story line without recapping. Since I've been reading this series as each book has been released, i had to go back to remember WTF happened at the ending of the last book since I've read a bunch of books in between. I had my "aha!" moment and went back to reading. Then just... lost interest again. Bleh.
Holy smokes! This book was amazing. My favorite was the book before but this one makes the series! The only bad thing about this book or series is that it’s over! I’m gonna miss Arlington and her boys!
