Whether you’re trying something new, enduring the grind of the everyday, or facing something you never imagined would come your way, life can be overwhelming and sometimes even scary. When that happens, how do you live brave? How do you learn to become a woman of courage? Who do you turn to as examples or mentors? This warm, honest, and encouraging devotional features women from the Bible who lived courageously despite unusual, difficult, or even frightening circumstances. From women who were called to step into leadership roles, to women who had to rely on God’s daily provision for their needs, these heroes of the Bible show you exactly how to lean into the strength of the Lord when your own isn’t enough.
Featuring 40 brave women—some well-known (like Ruth, Elizabeth, Mary, and Martha) and some lesser-known (such as Shiprah, Puah, Lois, and Eunice)—this devotional will walk with you through the hardest days and leave you with the courage you need to lead, to love, to trust, and to turn to God in every situation.
Each reading begins with a passage of Scripture, then dives into a woman’s story with detail and depth that illustrates exactly how much she was loved and cared for by God. It ends with an encouragement to apply the day’s lesson in your own life and a personal prayer that gets right to the heart of the matter and the heart of God. Prepare to be inspired and moved closer to the God who gives you strength and courage by spending time with some incredible women in His Word.
A great devotional for teen girls to women in all stages in their walk with Christ. Simple to read, encouraging, relatable, and a great reminder of how God uses us women for His Kingdom and glory.
Courage is defined as “the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery” (dictionary.com).
We need courage in facing new situations, the unknown, and most often, in our most ordinary of days.
Being a woman who has often characterized herself as “a chicken”, the question is how do we grow in courage? How can we learn to be women who possess courage and bravely face each day?
Women of Courage: a Forty Day Devotional from the (in)Courage Community is an encouraging devotional which looks at forty different women from Scripture who exuded courage despite the difficulties they faced.
This devotional covers topics such as broken relationships, leadership, friendship, hope, hospitality, second chances and several more.
Forty devotionals covering the stories of forty different women, some of whom are well known and some lesser known. All delivering a message sure to infuse any woman’s soul with courage and the fortitude to press on.
Each reading begins with a passage of Scripture and a reading which further explains each woman’s plight. The reading includes application and a prayer designed to grow our relationship and dependency upon God, for He is the source of all courage.
Having read this book a few days before Thanksgiving, I was particularly struck by the story of Miriam in the section on Gratitude. Miriam, who just after crossing the Red Sea, chose to lead the Israelites in worship and gratitude while yet unsure of what lie ahead. She brought the lesson, and teaches us all: “No matter what trials God has taken us through, we cannot deny His hand in our rescue. WE cannot ignore that regardless of our own efforts, we would still be fighting and running and panicking if He hadn’t come through with a supernatural solution. And when He does step in and intervene for us, our next step can only be praising Him!” (from page 145)
This is a lovely hardcover book, with a ribbon to bookmark your reading spot, making this a wonderful gift selection for any woman. The black and white photos add a unique and whimsical touch making this a book sure to be enjoyed and treasured.

My Thoughts: A lovely devotional that takes a look into different women in the Bible. For forty days women will be able to look into the past to women in the Bible for encouragement. Whether facing a new situation, wondering if they are strong enough to handle a situation in their lives, or anxious, scared or just looking for a little courage. This devotional will encourage all women of any age. This devotional was developed and written as a companion to the Devotional Bible, but this can be read on its own. Wonderfully written, it's laid out in a forty-day reading that is easy to read and follow. Filled with insight and beautiful photos this devotional is a winner.
I was very excited to have the opportunity to review Women of Courage, because I love (in)courage! I receive their daily devotional e-mails, and I enjoy reading from the (in)courage Bible. Just like all of the other aspects of (in)courage, Women of Courage did not disappoint!
This book is broken into 40 devotional readings about 40 different women from the Bible. Each reading begins with a scripture reading that introduces the highlighted woman and how she is a woman of courage. There is then 2-3 pages of days of devotional reading about this woman, and how we can apply her message to our own lives. Each daily reading ends with a heartfelt prayer that ties everything together. There are many well-known women such as Ruth, Mary Magdalene, Eve, and Esther, as well as some not so well-known women like the Daughters of Zelophehad, Shiphra and Puah, and Simon’s mother-in-law. I learned about some of these more unfamiliar personalities, as well as gained courage and comfort from reading about all of these women. The prayers were also very encouraging, and applied to situations happening in my daily life.
If you are not familiar with the (in)courage community, reading this book would be a great introduction to their ministry. We all need a little positivity and motivation in our lives, and this book, and (in)courage in general, is a wonderful place to find this while focusing on God!
I received a copy of this book from B & H Publishers, in return for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Many of us look for a new devotional every year, and this is an especially good pick. It’s 40 stories from women throughout the Bible. Some you know well, like Sarah, Esther, and Mary Magdalene. But you will gain fresh insight into their stories through this book. Others may be less familiar, such as the Widow of Nain, Priscilla, and Dorcas. Their stories will inspire your courage in new ways.
What makes this book unique is that the women aren’t ordered according to the chronological order of the books of the Bible. I found that refreshing, and it kept my attention. Another beautiful feature of this book is the heartfelt, intimate prayers that help you apply the story to your spiritual journey. I enjoyed the honest, thought-provoking questions that hit me right where I need to be challenged in every chapter.
This book has beautiful black-and-white photos to accompany each story, and the highlighting color is a bright, courageous shade of orange. This devotional would make a great addition to your personal library or an encouraging gift for a friend or family member.
I received a preview copy of Women of Courage from B&H Publishers.
As women, sometimes it can be hard to find courage when life gets overwhelming. I know for me personally, I struggle with having courage on the daily, often letting my fear get the best of me. This Women of Courage devotional from the ladies of (in)courage has been such a valuable and inspirational one for me, and I know it will be for others too. I love how authentic the devotions are, and the prayers at the end are really nice too. They may not suit everyone, but if you're someone who is hurting, they give you a great place to start when the words just won't come. I definitely will be recommending this devotional!

I received this book for Christmas and it was a perfect little devotional to do daily. It features 40 women in the Bible and the impact they made. It is broken down by days, so it tells you day 1 and which woman of the Bible you are reading about. You get a Bible verse, a written portion, and then a prayer at the end. I took it even further and wrote how I relate or want to be like the woman of the book that I read about. It was a super easy read and I loved the writing. It made you feel connected to each woman or women you read about for that day.
This is a devotional, not an in-depth study. I suggest you do additional research with it to make it more valuable. The authors were a bit shallow in some thoughts, and yet at other times, seemed to grasp the lessons in a much deeper way.
I did appreciate the variety of women chosen for this book. Reading about them one after another helped you view the similarities and difference. There was usually one application and should not be thought to be the only application of scripture. Sometimes, they were very unique in the application.
This is literally one of the best devotionals I’ve ever read! Incourage’s writing is brilliant, insightful, and modern to this day, showing us how we can relate to similar issues of many brave, heroic women of biblical times. I only wish it were longer than 40 days.
This was a good book but not my favorite devotional. The title made it sound like a good, uplifting book that encourages you to move forward and be strong and believe in what you can do, but most of the devotions didn’t do this for me.
I almost didn’t ask for a review copy of this book because I’ve seen so many ‘devotionals’ lately and most of them are pretty much the same. They serve their purpose, each one for a different audience, but the pattern is the same, pick a verse or short passage, a little bit about a lesson from the passage and how it applies to YOUR life, perhaps a question or two to help you think, and a sentence prayer to close it out. A good way to start the day, with a particular focus, is through reading a short devotional. Those few minutes help us to start the day by turning to God, and that might be what sets the tone for the day, and all that happens to us. But I’m so glad I ordered Women of Courage: a Forty-day Devotional (From the (in)courage Community, edited by Mary Carver, B&H Publishing, 2019) This book notches it up at least a few steps. First of all the devotions are grouped by categories; categories that allow women of the bible to be seen in the roles that God intended for them, rather than just a group of women who were present in biblical times, but whose purpose was often downplayed. Women are LEADERS, FRIENDS, and BRAVE. They overcome their BROKENNESS, and they are full of HOPE, GRACE, and GRATITUDE. They often teach us how to WORK TOGETHER, OFFER HOSPITALITY, and DISPLAY GRATITUDE. Another positive is the fact that instead of just a verse or two, we get an entire passage. While some people can take a single verse and preach for close to an hour, the longer passages give the reader an opportunity to hear the entirety of the account, which means that what they read next is in the context of what God is saying through the lives of these remarkable women. And just as the passage is longer, the devotional content is also longer. There is more opportunity to flesh out the meaning of the passage and more opportunity to apply it to what’s going on in our lives today…a reminder that God’s truths are timeless, not just something that happened thousands of years ago. The variety of prayers is also refreshing. Many people have problems praying, because they have never been taught how to pray. While these prayers are focused on the respective passages, they could also be used as a teaching too. As a member of the publisher’s blogger’s program, I received a copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. 4.5/5
