Epic 52 Weeks in the Story that Changed the World is a graphic-novel inspired weekly devotional based on The Story that Changed the World. Each insightful devotion circles back to the one big story of Jesus and makes biblical events more relevant for today’s youth. The book features familiar yet reimagined art from the One Big Story brand that is perfect for engaging older kids and preteen readers.
When B & H Publishers produced EPIC, The Story that Changed the World, a new bible book for kids in 2018, the Christian company scored an A plus. And, with its newest addition, EPIC Devotions, 52 Weeks in the Story That Changed the World, it scores an A double plus.
Why such a high rating for any new version of a retelling? After all, isn’t that what new bible versions do? retell in their own style and vernacular? In that sense, EPIC should be but one more kids’ bible versions. But, it is not just one more version. It stands out for its uniqueness. The high rating for this truly invaluable book comes because it is scriptural accurate, powerfully illustrated in bold colors, and includes in each of its 52 devotional weeks, thought-provoking questions for kids, and verses to help answer those questions.
First, it was EPIC, THE STORY THAT CHANGED THE WORLD; today it is EPIC DEVOTIONS. Don’t be surprised if B & H puts together another BLOCKBUSTER in 2020– another EPIC.
This is a great children's devotional book. It is the story of Jesus told throughout the ages beginning from creation. It tells the Bible story and ties it in with Jesus. I am really impressed. The graphics are somewhat cartoonish and great for kids. It has life-application questions, a verse to memorize and devotional thoughts. It is great for ages 8 to 12 although my three-year-old grand-daughter enjoyed looking at the pictures and hearing some of the stories read to her.
I would recommend this book to be used as a private devotional for kids or for family devotions or reading aloud to your children. The pictures and stories and questions are engaging and insightful. It is subtitled “52 Weeks in the Story that Changed the World.” I love the way it intertwines the story of Jesus throughout the Bible. I wish I had a book like this when I was a kid!
(Although a copy of this book was provided to me to review by Lifeway and B&H Kids, the opinions expressed are my own.)
A few months ago I reviewed a book called “Epic”; it had 40 chapters of stories covering the grand themes of the Bible. It’s in the style of a graphic novel and is geared for the 8-12 age group. Today I am pleased to take a look at another book by the same author and illustrator, Aaron Armstrong and Heath McPherson. Epic Devotions: 52 Weeks in the Story that Changed the World (B&H Publishing Group, 2019) is also written in the style of a graphic novel, with the same target age group. Each chapter or devotion is structured in the same way, and the “how to use” is found at the very beginning of the book. There is a key scripture verse, followed by the entire applicable passage and a summary of what happened in the particular passage. Then there are some action items to help you apply what you have learned, some questions for discussion (especially helpful for parents or grandparents who may be helper the younger children with the book, and finally a memory verse. I think this is a good selection of ‘Bible stories” to include in this type of book, and the eye-popping illustrations will hold the attention of most children. All in all a great way to introduce young readers to the Bible and to the ‘Story that Changed the World”. I received a copy of this book from the publisher as a member of their bloggers program. I was not required to post a positive review 4/5
Great devotional to read through with the kids. Great mix of Scripture, solid synopsis and explanation, question/discussion, and prayer prompts. Enjoyed working through this together.
